Today a village of shops, crafters and family restaurants, Dillsboro has always been a center of railway activity. During the 1880s when the Western North Carolina Railroad was built, the village bore a variety of names — Depot, New Webster, or Webster Station. In 1882, the Tunnel Post Office (named for the railroad’s Cowee Tunnel) was established with William Allen Dills as postmaster. It was the railroad’s developer, A.B. Andrews — for whom the town of Andrews in Cherokee County is named — who suggested the town adopt the name of its postmaster, becoming Dillsboro. Dills was responsible for building the Riverwood Shops, which overlook the Tuckasegee River, and what later became known as the C.J. Harris House. Harris is the namesake of Harris Regional Hospital in Sylva. Dills’ own home stood next to the Mt. Beulah Hotel — constructed in 1884 and today known as the Jarrett House. By 1888, Dillsboro had become the most important town along the railroad in terms of industry, with two sawmills, two clay mines, two livery stables, six general stores, a shoemaker and several wood yards.

GLENVILLE The Glenville community is centered on a large man-made lake with 26 miles of shoreline at 3,500 feet above sea level. The lake is the highest of its size east of the Mississippi River and is a favorite place for aquatic recreation. The area originally was known as the Hamburg Township, settled in 1827. In the late 1880s the area was thriving with industries including forestry, tanning and mining. It was in 1891 that the area was renamed Glenville. The lake itself was not created until 1940-41, when Nantahala Power and Light Company — owned by ALCOA — constructed a dam on the Tuckasegee River. The hydroelectric dam provided more electricity to help make aluminum for the war effort. The creation of the lake flooded Glenville’s schools, homes, businesses and farmlands. Today, the community is settled along the shores with several second and vacation homes, boating businesses and small shops.

years the town government became inactive — the first of several rises and falls in the town’s municipal development, and perhaps an early indicator of the town’s future. The story goes that during the construction of the Western North Carolina Railroad, county residents fully expected the railroad to run through Webster. However, the county’s state government representative — said to be fond of his drink — was taken aside at a crucial moment in the voting process and plied with liquor by an individual desiring a more direct route from Sylva to Dillsboro. The location of the railroad later was a primary factor in the movement to relocate the county seat from Webster to Sylva.

WHITTIER TOWNS, continued from page 7 Carolina Railroad in the 1880s. Its name came about at the suggestion of Mae Hampton, daughter of E.R. Hampton, who is credited as being the founder of Sylva. E.R. Hampton had married into the Cannon family, which owned a sawmill where William D. Sylva, an itinerant Dane, had helped saw the logs that built the Hampton’s home. The railroad’s route through Sylva made it a prime location for the county seat — originally located in Webster — but the issue of relocation resulted in years of bitter dispute between the two town’s representatives. The state legislature settled the dispute, giving Sylva permission to construct a courthouse so 8

long as the town paid the moving costs to relocate. On Feb. 28, 1914, the new Sylva courthouse, located on a hill overlooking Main Street, opened. Construction costs totaled $30,000. Today, the courthouse is reputed to be the most photographed in the country.

WEBSTER The town of Webster is a quiet residential community situated on top of a hill overlooking the Tuckasegee River. The town was created in the mid-1800s with the purchase of an 18acre tract specifically designated to become the county seat. Within a few years of its settlement, a courthouse was erected. The town was incorporated in 1859, but over the next 20

Whittier, Jackson County’s closest community to Cherokee, was another railroad town. Upon calling the area’s residents together, Clark Whittier proposed the formal establishment of a town: “It is my wish and I so move that we start operations here upon the principals and Word of God, including all morality, especially temperance and prohibition of the strongest form.” The town was incorporated in 1907 and by 1913 boasted a dry store, hotel, physician and surgeon, plus sawmills, lumber yards, three churches and a school. However, with the Great Depression the town lost much of its industry as the demand for lumber declined. By 1993 Whittier’s charter was repealed and today the community is mostly residential. There’s just something about Jackson County that Darren Nicholson can’t shake.

A mountain man forever Balsam Range’s Darren Nicholson keeps his feet firmly grounded in Jackson County as the band’s success soars

“It’s home,” he smiled. Mandolinist for renowned Western North Carolina bluegrass group Balsam Range, Nicholson spent the first decade of his life growing up in the small community of Tuckasegee. His father was from Caney Fork, his mother raised in Dillsboro. “My dad liked to hunt and fish a lot, so I was always in the mountains of Jackson County,” he said. “You can’t help but fall in love with it.” Of all the things he remembers and cherishes about his hometown, Nicholson looks fondly on those Friday and Saturday nights watching and participating in music jam sessions in his living room. “I just remember [the sense] of community,” he said. “Music was a big part of my childhood. Ten or 20 people would be in my living room playing. Music was always around. You find that theme all over the Appalachians.” Turning that musical ambition into a career, Nicholson has garnered a wide array of success. Along the way, he and Balsam Range received a Grammy nomination, performed on the Grand Ole Opry, appeared on CMT and ESPN, toured with Merle Haggard and was an International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) winner for “Album of the Year,” among other accolades. “You have to have perspective on what makes [success] happen,” he said. “I love to make music and sing, but if nobody buys an album or comes to listen, then what you’re doing is pretty much in vain.” And with that modesty, Nicholson is humbled by the support he’s not only received from the music industry, but most importantly from those who know him best – family and friends. “There’s nothing better than when people come up to you and congratu-

late you on your success,” he said. “The music business is really tough, but the people from Jackson County are very supportive. It makes you feel good.” Balsam Range seems to have come into its own recently and is finding success across the music industry, pulling listener after listener into their world of mountain music and soul. Winner of the IBMA award for “Song of the Year” (2011), the quintet released their acclaimed album “Papertown” in 2012 and found themselves backing singer/songwriter John Driskell Hopkins (of the Zac Brown Band) on his latest solo release “Daylight.” “We’re so fortunate that our music is striking a chord and people like it so much,” Nicholson said.

“When you’re a young kid and trying to make music around these folks, and they pat you on the back and tell you to keep it up. Well, I’ll never forget that.” — DARREN NICHOLSON

For the better part of the last four years, Nicholson found himself driving nearly every weekend to Nashville to perform and record. He would find himself making the four-hour trek one way, only to play a few songs and immediately head back. But it was worth it, chasing his musical dreams, while still having one foot in his homeland. “I love Nashville, and it’s a nice place to visit, but this place is my home,” he said. “I’ve always had the same feeling, when I hit eastern Tennessee and see those mountains, of like ‘I won’t move.’” And it’s that welcoming embrace of Jackson County that still sticks with Nicholson. It’s about those older musicians who let him sit and play, those people who pushed him forward into his own endeavors. “When you’re a young kid and trying to make music around these folks, and they pat you on the back and tell you to keep it up. Well, I’ll never forget that,” he said. With his roots deeply embedded in the high peaks and low valleys of Western North Carolina, Nicholson perpetuates the friendliness, hospitality and musicianship he was taught by those who he was raised around. “Whenever we’re on the road, we brag about how the people are and how proud we are to be from Western North Carolina,” he said. “And that’ll never change as long as I’m playing music.”

What sounded like a jet engine echoed out of the building tucked away on the hill.

Peering into the large bay doors of the metal studio at the Jackson County Green Energy Park (JCGEP) in Dillsboro, one can see that the booming noise is coming from a foundry in the corner used to turn metals into molten liquid for casting. “It’s surprising how thin the molten metal gets,” said Timm Muth, director of the JCGEP. “It pours out like Kool-Aid when I was expecting it to be like honey. It comes out quick and makes it a little scary.” Fueled by methane from a now-closed county landfill The Jackson County next door, the foundry is Green Energy Park is known as the only one of its located at 100 Green kind in the world to run Energy Park Rd. in entirely on the sustainable Dillsboro. With over 30 years of experience in the energy industry, Muth is leading that charge, and the results have been quite plentiful. “As renewable energy resources become more important and more widely accepted, the JCGEP can expand its role as a leading example of community scale use,” he said.

JACK SON NE WS IN BRIEF

Panthertown one of the gems of Jackson County Burt Kornegay gets a little nostalgic thinking about the wildness that once enveloped Panthertown. The bowl-like 6,700-acre valley flanked by granite domes — known as Yosemite of the East — perches on the Cashiers plateau, its waterfall-laden streams feeding the headwaters of the Tuckaseegee River. It’s a place of sheer rock faces and diverse vegetation. In the old days, visible campsites were few. You could stake claim to your very own waterfall. Encounters on the trail were modest. There were no signposts or trail markers. “That is one of the things that drew people to it. It was a wild experience to find your way around. You had to be somewhat trail savvy,” said Kornegay, who runs the guide service and outfitter Slickrock Expeditions. For years, the only maps of Panthertown trails were stick figure diagrams passed

amongst fellow hikers. But as Panthertown’s popularity grew, lost hikers became more common. So Kornegay finally committed the trail system to paper in the mid-90s, drawing lines on a topo map as he hiked. “I knew the Valley the way I do my house,” said Kornegay, an authority on Panthertown. Kornegay’s maps went fast, with more than 10,000 sold since the first edition. Once considered a “best-kept secret,” the popularity of Panthertown is easy to understand. The influx of people to the Cashiers and Sapphire area is a big factor. “Panthertown is close to many developments,” Kornegay said. “Those developments have people in them who are very outdoorsy and like to hike.”

There are numerous self-appointed trail docents in Panthertown, what Kornegay described as “unofficial and surreptitious trail building and maintenance.” “It has been an all-in-the-family kind of recreation area,” Kornegay said. But one man can take credit for many of Panthertown’s trails — Carlton McNeil. Until passing away, McNeil hiked into Panthertown from his neighboring home almost daily. “He would find a pretty place and just make a trail to it,” Kornegay said. “He was a short, little, skinny guy and he cut out just enough room for a short, little, skinny guy to hike.” But as more people followed in his footsteps, the trail would grow. “There are trails now well-beaten that when I started running trips were the faintest of trails most people would have a hard time following,” Kornegay said. These days, taking care of the trails is one of the main jobs undertaken by the Friends of Panthertown, a nonprofit entity. In 2010, at the request of U.S. Forest Service, and due to many visitors getting lost in Panthertown, Friends of Panthertown funded and installed trail-head bulletin boards with maps, and trail markers with trail usage designations at each of the major intersections. Between the trail markers and maps that are now available (including Kornegay’s), usage is up.

Bringing back the Cullowhee lily An effort to re-establish the Cullowhee lily on the Western Carolina University campus got underway this past fall with a fundraising drive, a bulb sale and ceremonial planting in the Centennial Garden. A white flower with six petals formally called the Zephyranthes atamasca, the Cullowhee lily once common at Western Carolina now grows in only a few spots on campus. Some speculate the water-loving plant began to disappear from the Cullowhee region when the low valley wetlands were drained first for farm use then later during con-

struction. The proliferation of aggressive kudzu along the river banks may have been another factor in the disappearance of this non-competitive lily. A committee of WCU alumni, staff and community members began meeting in spring 2012 out of a desire to bring the Cullowhee lily back and to do so in a way that also raises money for the WCU Alumni Scholarship Fund. “In cultivating the lily we are also cultivating our heritage and our students, said Susan Belcher, wife of Chancellor David O. Belcher and a leader in the initiative. Supporters of the Cullowhee lily initiative who give a $50 donation toward planting and maintaining a lily bed on campus and supporting the WCU Alumni Scholarship Fund will be honored as charter members of the Cullowhee Lily Society. Those who donate $250 will receive a framed limited edition and numbered photo of the Cullowhee lily printed on canvas and signed by Chancellor David O. Belcher. As of the end of 2012, nearly $6,000 had been raised for the scholardship fund. Dr. Frances Owl-Smith, president-elect of the WCU Alumni Board of Directors, said she is particularly excited that the effort will support scholarships. “This cannot be more appreciated at this time of economic stress for our students in need of financial support who want to receive their education at this fine university, said Owl-Smith. To volunteer to assist with the initiative, contact Cindi Magill with the Office of Alumni Affairs at 828-227-7335 or magill@wcu.edu. Direct gifts to the Alumni Association Scholarship also can be made online at give.wcu.edu.

PICK A BARGAIN IN SYLVA

Everyone likes a good deal. In Jackson County, we have a plethora of antique stores, second-hand shops and consignment botiques that stock everything from cheap and funky clothes to one-of-a-kind heirlooms. Visiting these stores is more like a treasure hunt than a typical shopping excursion. But today, “junkin” is more than just about saving money. It’s also rewarding to find new uses for vintage clothing and furniture that other people would rather discard. As the saying goes, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” And one more point about many of these stores: the proceeds benefit some of the charitable institutions and nonprofits in Jackson County that provide 20

April “Dixie” Brendel found her heart in downtown Sylva. Owner of Finders Keepers, Brendle is all smiles about how her business has taken off in Jackson County. Focusing on home and garden décor, vintage and antique items, the business has garnered a loyal following since opening its doors in April 2012. “I’m just amazed that I’ve made it work and put it all together,” she chuckled. “I’ve been really excited with feedback from the community.” A lifelong Sylva resident, Brendle was a jack-of-all-trades, working for a hospital or selling T-shirts, but something didn’t feel right. She wanted more, and that something was her own store where she could share unique items. It was a passion — APRIL “DIXIE” BRENDLE, that originated OWNER OF FINDERS KEEPERS from her childhood, going to her aunt’s house and being in wonder of all the things displayed in her home. “I always looked forward to going to her place and looking at all of the old things,” she said. “I’d go around with her to auctions, digging around boxes and trying to find cool stuff.” Eventually, that deep urge molded itself into a dream, which pushed forward into a reality that came to fruition in 2009. “[I thought], ‘This is what you love, why aren’t you doing this?’” she said. So, she opened Whistlin’ Dixie in Dillsboro, a location that harbored an array of vintage and antique pieces, with an aim to accessorize a garden or home to the variety of tastes each customer may have. But, Brendle felt the space was too small, especially if she wanted to add in a furniture component to the business. “[Whistlin’ Dixie] was on a smaller scale, more touristfocused, with more crafts,” she said. “It was halfway where my heart was, and I just didn’t have the space.”

“I like having a shop like this here because there’s nothing else like it.”

And when Cope’s Superette and Newsstand, a legendary Sylva business, decided to vacate its downtown building, Brendle jumped on the opportunity. She now had the room to grow and could offer spaces on the property to be rented and used by other vendors looking to promote and sell their items. “I love the vibe here,” she said. “It’s very eclectic, a little piece of Asheville sitting right here in Sylva.” With more than 50 people (vendors and consigners) involved with Finders Keepers, the business continues to grow as each person brings forth their ideas alongside their hard-tofind pieces. Those curious can buy, sell or trade, with a comfortable atmosphere always at the forefront. Classic rock music wafts through the building, while a cozy ambiance immediately greets visitors.

“When I started this business, I wanted to rent spaces to other vendors who have the same vision as I do,” she said. Specializing in mid-20th century furniture, vintage/retro lighting and antique garden decorations, Brendle also offers handmade soaps and jewelry, a craft she greatly enjoys doing. She hopes to expand as things move along, with aspirations to take on more vendors. “It’s a real good mix of old and little bit of new,” she said. “We’re always looking for ways to grow and there are more vendors wanting to come in.” Brendle is optimistic about the economic climate of Jackson County. She’s eager to get involved more with the business community and sees a lot of opportunity for Sylva. It’s a town within reach of numerous people, places and possibilities, and Finders Keepers is right in the middle of it all. “It’s a funky shop,” she said. “And I like having a shop like this here because there’s nothing else like it.”

The Hart of what matters Tapping into the spirit of Appalachia

What started out as helping his father eventually led to a career for Dave Hart. Co-owner of Nichols House Antiques in downtown Sylva, Hart spent his younger years clearing out and renovating homes in Florida that his father bought in an effort to revitalize and save unique buildings. “And I started collecting things,” he said. “We’d find items to fill up the homes we restored. We felt it was better to sell a furnished home, rather than an empty one.” Continuing in the profession, Hart then found himself looking for a second home in Western North Carolina. He landed in Sylva, a location that had a certain charm to it. “I just fell in love with the town,” he said. “I really like the tourists and the locals. Everybody is great. It’s a place you really want to recommend to people to come and visit.” Hart crossed paths with Pat Kessing, a Virginian who also shared an interest in collecting and selling antiques. The duo decided to go into business together. And when the historical Nichols House came on the market, they seized the opportunity. Purchasing the building, they stripped it down and renovated the property, transforming it into an elegant structure in the heart of Jackson County. “When we opened in 2008, we wanted to be a part of the community, but offer something different,” Hart said. “We don’t want to be your typical mall space or thrift store, we want things of great interest at a great price.” Taking a more high-end approach, Nichols House Antiques looks for certain pieces that can make a room pop or fill a house with traditional wares of Southern Appalachia. Hart is amazed at some of the things, once tossed out or taken for granted, that are making a comeback. “There’s stuff from the 1960s, like metal cabinets and lockers, that were considered ‘crap’ and thrown out,” he said. “Now they’re antiques, now people want those things, and I can see why.”

“When a customer steps out of the crowd, you want to be the one they think of when they’re looking for something.” — DAVE HART, CO-OWNER OF NICHOLS HOUSE ANTIQUES

MARK HASKETT PHOTO

With those highly desirable finds, Hart said it takes years of trial and error, of combing through auctions and estate sales to truly know what to not only know what to look for, but also know exactly how much it’s worth. “Sometime people have this false perception of what things are worth,” he said. “Nothing is worth anything, only if somebody is willing to buy something.” Harts also points to the advantages of sav-

ing and preserving what he finds and what comes into the shop. The mere fact of reusing something from the past, and finding new ways to incorporate it into modern societal needs, is a win-win for him. “Now we have a culture where people recycle,” he said. “This is another way we’re recycling and reusing these items.” Though the national economy is slowing coming back, Hart feels Jackson County is on

the rise again. He feels the ups and downs of the scene will filter out, leaving businesses to prosper once again in Western North Carolina. “The economy is going to come back, and is already in some ways,” he said. “You always keep improving. When a customer steps out of the crowd, you want to be the one they think of when they’re looking for something.” Coming into his fourth decade in the antique industry, Hart said it never ceases to amaze him the things he finds and the people he crosses paths with. It’s been a bountiful career for him, one that continually teaches him something new everyday. “It all pretty much works hand-in-hand,” he said. “You do learn a lot from other people, other vendors and shop owners. You never stop learning.”

It’s about feeling beautiful, without paying an ugly price.

Sylva’s sassy girl Looking like a million dollars and not emptying the wallet

Owner of Sassy Girls Consignment, Melissa Rogers aims to bridge the gap between fashion and price, where women can adequately afford the luxuries of looking and feeling beautiful. MARK HASKETT PHOTO

Our Town 2013

Three years ago, Melissa Rogers was a marketing professional, a tough job in an even tougher economy. She had an idea to open a consignment shop, a dream she had been toying with for a while. “I just wanted to have my own business and thought this one would work,” she said. “And obviously, I’m a girl, so I like clothes and fashion. I decided to combine my interests.” In September 2009, Rogers opened Sassy Girls Consignment in Sylva. The shop is a place that provides women of Jackson County and beyond with affordable clothing and accessories, attainable designer items, full of style and taste, that never compromise one’s budget. “We focus on women and juniors, and carry everything that has to do with a woman,” she said. “We started out with half the racks we have now and just have expanded. It’s been amazing.” When she sat down to write out her vision for the business, Rogers wanted to create a place where women didn’t feel shortchanged, where they could come get quality clothes at a fair price. She points out that a lot of women spend their time and money on husbands and children, thus leaving little left for themselves. “And you might not take the time to care for yourself,” she said. “Women’s clothes are expensive and they want to change up their look a little more, and here we give them a way to do that and still stay on a budget.” On opening day, Rogers was excited to see her dream come to fruition. Through Facebook and word-of-mouth, there was an immediate following, one that has grown exponentially since. Besides Jackson County customers, others have wandered in

J AC KSON COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERC E

from all over Western North Carolina, Georgia and Florida. “It’s been a very successful business,” she smiled. “I don’t think we’ve changed from what we initially thought, but it has exploded in how much we do.” From sweaters to dresses, jewelry to purses, the shop offers an endless variety of brands. There are vintage items from older clients and newer designs from tourists passing through the region. This wide spectrum makes the location as sought-after as what is displayed on the shelves and in the racks.

“A lot of women who come in genuinely want your input and help. It’s a lot of fun, and we enjoy doing it.” — MELISSA ROGERS, OWNER OF SASSY GIRLS CONSIGNMENT

“There are so many different styles and personalities,” Rogers said. “You have these purses that grandmothers bring in and I can’t tell you how excited these young girls are when they find these purses.” The idea behind consignment shops is to facilitate a continual flow of items and customers in a comfortable, embracing environment. With over 1,200 customers in their database, Sassy Girl clients bring in their discarded clothing and accessories, to which the shop figures out what they can sell and not sell. From there, the store will give the client 40 percent of the selling price, money that can be applied to store credit or a check that can be given the following month. “What makes me happy is that people trust us,” Rogers said. “We’ll do our best to sell their clothing at a reasonable price and help them make a little extra money.” When someone walks into the shop, Rogers wants each woman to feel welcome and not pressured to buy something. And, if they need it, help will always be available for those curious how an outfit or accessory may look on them. “Here, we encourage them to try things on that may be out of their comfort zone,” she said. “A lot of women who come in genuinely want your input and help. It’s a lot of fun, and we enjoy doing it.” And with the shop expanding further into the closets of Western North Carolina, Rogers has never lost sight of that original dream. She’s proud to be apart of the Jackson County economy, something that holds true with the original intent of her business. “We want you to feel like a million dollars, but only spend 20 bucks,” she said. “And, you can’t beat that.”

The thrill of the chase One man’s find is another man’s treasure

Though he may not look 75, Marion Jones will be the first to say otherwise. “I used to think I was getting lazy, but I’m just getting old,” he chuckled. Moving back and forth in his trusty rocking chair, situated squarely in the middle of his shop, Jones was born and raised in Jackson County. He’s a beloved father and husband, and also the owner of Jones Country Store, a vibrant antique business in the hustle and bustle of downtown Sylva. “[Antiquing] has been good to me, not always monetarily, but it keeps you busy and gives you something to do,” he said. When he got out of high school in the late 1950s, Jones went to seek his fortune in Florida. After that didn’t pan out as he had planned, he and some friends signed up for the Navy Air Corps. Finding himself in jet engine maintenance, he enjoyed the work, but, when he finished his service and headed back to Western North Carolina, there was no need for those skills.

Owner of Jones Country Store, “There was no demand for Marion Jones has been a picker for jet maintenance in Jackson most of his life, sifting through old County,” he said. “So, I went barns, flea markets and auctions in search of that one special item. Jones back to school at Western (right) is pictured with his grandson at Carolina University and studhis shop. Getting a position as a driver’s license examiner for the local DMV, Jones did that for a period before landing in the county district attorney’s office as a mediator for intricate criminal court cases. It was a pilot program, funded by the federal government, which resulted in Jones as the first mediator in the history of the state. “Sometimes the judges would have me do certain cases they didn’t even want to go near,” he laughed. “We had this one case years ago that involved 16 warrants, and the judge knew it would tie up the court for weeks, so I had to take care of it.” Retiring from the office in 1986, Jones decided to open an antique business in Dillsboro, something that brought forth his lifelong hobby of pickin’ and collecting. He started his hobby at renowned flea markets around the south, going with friends who were pickers and knew the ins and outs of the industry.

“I just started buying whatever I liked, and I didn’t know what I liked until I saw it,” he said. “Back then, you could find some good stuff. It’s a lot harder these days. I think everyone is hoarding things like me, I suppose.” Now in downtown Sylva, the walls of the store are adorned with innumerable items, many of which Jones has a story for. It’s about preserving the history of the region and being able to explore your homeland, seeing places and meeting people you might not have crossed paths with otherwise. “That’s what I love about this business, being able to talk to folks from all around the country,” he said. And as his hobby grew exponentially, Jones decided not to step on his wife’s toes, thus putting most of the collection in storage. But, once in awhile, he would sneak things into their home here and there. As he began selling to other collectors, he remembers going to grab an item he snuck into the house. “[My wife] asked what I was doing and I told her I was selling the piece,” he smiled. “She said she liked it and wanted it to stay where it was. I knew, even then, that I had won and you don’t win too much with your wife.” Nowadays, though his wanderings and purchases may have slowed down, Jones still loves the thrill of the chase, of tracking down that one key item to display in his store and

home or gift to a friend or family member. These days, you can find him moving back and forth in his rocking chair, chatting up the history of Southern Appalachia (and a few tall tales) with his peers who come and sit with him in the store. “When they leave and go home, I usually do too,” he said. “I tell them I got to get home and do some mechanic work. They say, ‘Mechanic work?’ and I say, ‘Yeah, I’ve got to put a rear end in the recliner.’”

“I just started buying whatever I liked, and I didn’t know what I liked until I saw it.” — MARION JONES, OWNER OF JONES COUNTRY STORE

Your Town, Our Town

Since 1995, Jackson Paper Manufacturing has been a proud part of the Sylva and Jackson County communities. As one of the largest private employers in Jackson County, we are committed to the people and prosperity of our region.

And as the largest manufacturer of recycled paper in North Carolina, we take very seriously our role as good and responsible stewards of our environment. We owe our success to our highly skilled and dedicated employees, and the support of the communities that we all call home.
