Visitor Center A must for any visitor. Get all the information you need about Bryson City and Swain 1 County, from where to stay and things to do, including a more detailed walking tour. Old Clampitt Hardware Run as a general store for more than a century, this longest 2 continually running business in Bryson City began in 1911. It has been in the Clampitt family for five decades. Historic courthouse The old courthouse built in 1908 was home to many famous trials, from murders to poaching to moonshine. 3 Its dome-shaped roof is an icon of town. Bennett’s Drug Store Bennett’s Drug store, founded in 1905 by A.M. Bennett, a doctor and pharmacist, was once part of the fabric of daily life 4 where towns people gathered to trade gossip and talk politics.
Tuckasegee River The Tuckasegee River winds through downtown 5 offering bird and aquatic life viewing, swimming and paddling. Enjoy the riverside from a gazebo at this spot.
Old Pillar Building A successful timberman Gamewell Coffey built 7 Citizen’s Bank during the logging boom around 1915, but the bank fell victim to the Great Depression and closed in 1929.
Island Park Bryson City’s Island Park is a large wooded island on the 6 Tuckasegee River reached by a foot bridge, great for a picnic or exploring.
The Station Mall Built in 1915 to house a grocer and dry goods distributor, 8 it was strategically located alongside the railroad track to ship goods to the far-flung logging boom towns that had sprung up in remote parts of the mountains. Train Depot The depot, dating to 1885 and home to the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad, is a 9 hub of activity with trains coming and going, shops and eateries, and a museum. North Shore Road Take this scenic road out of town and into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, 10 offering views of Fontana Lake and ending at a long stone tunnel leading into the forest.

Tubing Floating down the cool and exciting waters of Deep Creek is by far one of the favorite pastimes for families. Tote your tube up the wide, gentle trail following the creek, then float back down again and again. There are several places to launch, both above the more challenging rapids and below for those who want a more peaceful drift down the stream. Mountain biking Deep Creek is one of the few places in Great Smoky Mountains National Park where mountain biking is allowed. Bikes are permitted on Deep Creek and Indian Creek trails on the old roadbeds to the trail heads. The rides are easy and great for children and families. Check the outdoors directory for bike rental locations.
Take a plunge in Deep Creek Just a few miles outside of Bryson City, visitors can find a microcosm of family outdoor activities. Swim, hike to waterfalls, float in inner tubes, fish, picnic, and mountain bike all along this picturesque mountain stream known as Deep Creek. And best of all, enjoying Deep Creek — a recreation area within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park — is free other than a few dollars a day to rent a tube for a little whitewater adventure.
Hike to waterfalls Three hikes will take you to awesome Smokies waterfalls in Deep Creek. And best of all, the hikes are easy trips — even for kids. The trails all start from the parking area. Juney Whank Falls is a little more than a half mile. Three Waterfalls Loop is 2.4 miles. Deep Creek-Indian Creek Loop, the longest, is 4.4 miles. Deep Creek is also a jumping off point for longer hikes in to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a vast wilderness with 800 miles of backcountry trails waiting to be explored. Fishing Anglers need a Tennessee or North Carolina fishing license to fish within the national park. You can get one at several locations in the Bryson City area. Deep Creek offers great spots to spend the day with a rod. Picnicking A picnic area open year-round offers plenty of tables, grills, restrooms and changing areas. Camping Deep Creek campground is open from April to late October. Group camping is available. 877.444.6777. Directions: To get there from Bryson City, head toward the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad depot, turn right on Depot Street, turn left on Deep Creek Road. Look for brown signs with Deep Creek in white letters. See map on page 14.

Champions are Nantahala Bound The Nantahala River boasts more Olympic paddlers per capita than anywhere else in the world. It’s a magnet for river runners, and the professional outfitters dotting the Nantahala Gorge are the best in the industry — the ones kayak manufacturers turn to for feedback when testing new designs. It’s a natural for Swain County to serve as the stage for the Freestyle World Championships in September 2013. The event will attract 500 paddlers from 45 different countries and thousands of spectators to the Gorge. This year, the World Cup of Freestyle Kayaking will come to the Nantahala in September, attracting thousands of international spectators in a lead up to the big event in 2013. Freestyle kayaking is like the X-Games, but on a river. This fastest-growing segment of whitewater competition is filled with technical tricks and highly-stylized moves like spins, turns, and cartwheels. The paddler surfs in place while performing the maneuvers on top of a wave. A centerpiece of the event will be the Wave Shaper — an underwater apparatus that will create waves and holes for paddlers to perform their tricks on. The wave is now in place and available for free to anyone paddling the river wanting to test their own moves. The Nantahala will be one of only three rivers in the country using the cutting edge technology of the Wave Shaper. Mountains of Heritage If you’re looking for immersion in Appalachian heritage, look no further than Bryson City. From mountain music every Saturday night at the Great Smoky Mountains Train depot to traditional artists practicing trades passed down through the generations, this Smokies town has it all. Festivals throughout the year highlight Appalachian heritage. Basket-making demonstrations and wool spinning are just a few of the old-time skills on display. There’s even a festival or two devoted to the ramp, a wild mountain culinary favorite similar to an onion. The Friday morning downtown farmer’s market showcases mountain agriculture with old-timey heirloom vegetables, eggs, locally made cheese, baked goods, homemade jelly, and crafts, while weekly music jams at the Bryson City library bring together mountain musicians. Simply going on a hike in the Smokies provides a look at Appalachian life. Keep an eye out for the ruins of old farming settlements, with the telltale signs of ancient chimneys, rock walls and old homeplace foundations. The old Hazel Creek community in the park is a great way to get acquainted with early Appalachian life, with places like Bone Valley, named for the bones from a herd of cattle that froze to death in the late 1800s and restored structures from a boom town in old logging days. Know what a side-hill plow is? Want to hear a first-hand account of a panther run-in? Step on in to the Oconaluftee Visitor Center in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and take a step back in time. Next door, check out the Mountain Farm Museum complete with an old blacksmith shop, smokehouse and historic garden. [18]

When Horace Kephart arrived on the doorstep of Bryson City in the early 20th century, he was on a quest for a simpler life, a place to start over and one where wilderness still reigned. He found those things in the Smokies — and far more. A writer and outdoorsman, Kephart left big-city life to immerse himself in the rugged mountain landscape and in the unique breed of people he coined “mountaineers.” These were a “people apart” living in the “back of beyond,” according to Kephart, and he strove to become one of them. When it came time to write his famous anthology of mountain people Our Southern Highlanders, Kephart produced characters, lively dialogue and riveting scenes thanks to his years of careful notes. As you walk the streets of Bryson City imagining the town as it must have been in Kephart’s day, cast a glance upward to the second story window above Bennett’s Drug Store. Here, Kephart would have been found hunkered over a writing desk, penning passages on the wilderness and backwoods people who carved a hardscrabble living out of the mountains, and in his later years, tirelessly cranking out advocacy pieces calling for the creation of a national park in the Smokies. Kephart was a driving force in Washington behind the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, combining his art of prose with his undying passion for the land he’d come to call home. Bryson City celebrates the annual Horace Kephart Days celebration each year in early September with guided hikes to his old stomping ground, historical talks, performances and meals. Roads don’t get much better than this
World-class motorcycling abounds outside Bryson City — it’s dead center of three rides consistently ranked as the top routes in America by motorcycle enthusiasts. The curvy mountain roads are also a paradise for autotouring, with numerous classic car and sports car conventions held in the area every year. The Dragon No doubt one of the most famous motorcycle routes in the world, the Tail of the Dragon offers 318 curves in 11 miles. To get there, take U.S. 129 out of Robbinsville. The route is ranked No. 3 in the nation by American Motorcyclist magazine. Cherohala Skyway Long corners and endless vistas make this sky-high road and enthusiasts dream. Serving up 60 miles of scenic mountain cruising, the Skyway climbs to 5,400 feet from Robbinsville to Tellico Plains, Tenn. But be prepared. There are no restrooms or gas stations along the 36 mile Skyway. Newfound Gap U.S. 441 twists and winds its way from the Oconaluftee River Valley up and over a 5,000 foot divide in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, offering longrange views, forested tunnels and rushing rivers. The scenic route is studded with points of interest, including the Oconaluftee Visitors Center, Mingus Mill, picnic areas or Clingmans Dome.

It’s no surprise Bryson City and Swain County are known as The Base Camp of the Smokies with outdoor adventures geared for every skill — and thrill — level. And it has local outfitters ready to suit all your needs. From worldclass mountain biking and paddling to zipline canopy tours, birding and fishing in pure mountain waters, this is one base camp you’ll want to call home.
The Great Outdoors Mountain biking Riders travel from around the country to enjoy the mountain biking trails at Tsali Recreation Area. With 40 miles of trails and four loops to chose from, it’s rated as one of the top 10 places to ride in the U.S. Views of Fontana Lake, singletrack and wide gravel roads make this a great ride of the whole family. There’s also custom-built mountain biking trails at nearby Nantahala Outdoor Center and Fontana Village Resort. Local outfitters rent mountain bikes, as well as bikes for kids and bike trailers for small children. Group rides for road and mountain biking enthusiasts are held weekly. Fishing From backcountry fly-fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to a lazy day of lake fishing, anglers visiting Swain County can
[58]
wet their hooks with the finest brook and rainbow trout, bass, and walleye in these pristine mountain waters. Bass tournaments on Fontana Lake and fly-fishing tournaments on mountain rivers draw some of the best anglers in the country. Rafting and paddling Getting out on the water is a big draw at the Base Camp of the Smokies and a top ingredient of your memory-making vacation. Head to the Nantahala Gorge, jump aboard a raft and hang on for a guided r trip down the river. Professional outfitters cater to every group type and skill level, even if you’ve never held a paddle. You’ll be surrounded by some of the top paddlers in the world, who both work in the Gorge or travel here for challenging Nantahala River. Paddling clinics are also offered, from beginners to experts honing their skills.

Hiking If a walk in the woods is what your after, then look no farther than Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It has 800 miles of hiking trails with everything from a short jaunt to scenic overlooks to days of backcountry trekking. Its biodiversity is some of the richest in the world and creatures you won’t see at home such as elk, black bears and endangered salamanders populate the woods and streams. Short kid-friendly hikes to waterfalls will get you in the great outdoors without much hassle. You might also want to take a stroll down part of America’s most famous path, the Appalachian Trail. From pontoon boat history tours to gripping jet boat rides, Fontana Lake is a great way to spend the day. Fontana is one of the most scenic lakes in the mountains. The lush, unspoiled slopes and majestic peaks of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park cradle the deep blue water. Keep an eye out: A pair of nesting bald eagles call the shores of Fontana home. There are several options for boat rentals, from fishing boats to pontoons and even house boats. Nearby, a swimming area at Finger Lake swimming area offers cool respite after a hike. Bring a raft to relax for the day or just a towel for a quick dip — and muster the courage to try one of the rope swings off the shore.
