Welcome to Bryson City In the midst of the Great Smokies of Western North Carolina is Bryson City – the premier outdoor destination of the Southeast. On land, you can choose from three entrances into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park or the Tsali Recreational Area to hike and bike. Enjoy the scenery from a car or motorcycle on the Blue Ridge Parkway, “America’s Favorite Drive”, or The Dragon with its 311 curves in 18 miles. Want a water adventure? How about Fontana Lake or one of our many trout streams for worldclass fishing or creek tube down Deep Creek and make a day of it with a picnic or waterfall walk. And don’t forget the Nantahala River – home of the 2013 Freestyle Kayaking Championships, on top of being a leader in the whitewater rafting industry since the 1970’s. But don’t stay in the woods the entire time. Plan an afternoon and evening to visit our downtown where you will find an eclectic blend of boutique shops, old-fashioned general stores and galleries, as well as an array of dining options sure to please any palate. Plan your visit to Bryson City and discover how easy it is to “Have a Big Vacation in a Small Town.” [4]

Splash the Day Away at Deep Creek

Tubing Floating down the cool and pristine waters of Deep Creek is by far one of the favorite pastimes for families. Tote your tube up the wide, gentle trail following the creek, then float back down again and again. There are several places to launch, both above the more challenging rapids and below for those who want a more peaceful drift down the stream. Mountain biking Deep Creek is one of the few places in Great Smoky Mountains National Park where mountain biking is allowed. Bikes are permitted on Deep Creek and Indian Creek trails on the old roadbeds to the trail heads. The rides are easy and great for children and families. Check the outdoors directory for bike rental locations.

Only a few minutes from downtown Bryson City, you’ll find Deep Creek – one of the three entrances into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park located in Swain County. Filled with day hike opportunities (including an easy walk to three waterfalls), creek tubing, fishing, picnicking and mountain biking, the area is a favorite of families as a fun and economical outdoor adventure option.

Hike to waterfalls Three hikes will take you to awesome Smokies waterfalls in Deep Creek. And best of all, the hikes are easy trips — even for kids. The trails all start from the parking area. Juney Whank Falls is a little more than a half mile. Three Waterfalls Loop is 2.4 miles. Deep Creek-Indian Creek Loop, the longest, is 4.4 miles. Deep Creek is also a jumping off point for longer hikes in to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a vast wilderness with 800 miles of backcountry trails waiting to be explored. Fishing Anglers need a Tennessee or North Carolina fishing license to fish within the national park. You can get one at several locations in the Bryson City area. Deep Creek offers great spots to spend the day with a rod. Picnicking A picnic area open year-round offers plenty of tables, grills, restrooms and changing areas. Camping Deep Creek campground is open from April to late October. Group camping is available. 877.444.6777. Directions: To get there from Bryson City, head toward the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad depot, turn right on Depot Street, turn left on Deep Creek Road. Look for brown signs with Deep Creek in white letters. See map on page 14.

International Paddling Event Comes to Bryson City A destination for paddlers around the world, the Nantahala River is know for its complexity of rapids and its consistent waters levels ensuring a level of competition that can’t be found anywhere but the United States. Playing host to the 2013 International Canoe Federation’s (ICF) Freestyle World Championships Sept. 2-8, the world’s top paddlers will descend upon the river for a week of competition, camaraderie and cold water. Meaning “Land of the Noon-day sun,” Nantahala is not only the name bestowed on the river, but also the proud moniker for the surrounding gorge, which stretches for several miles into the Southern Appalachians. Originating from Nantahala Lake, a hydro project reservoir, the water cascades down from an elevation of 3,000 feet. As it flows into the region, the river has become a highly-regarded haven for fly fishermen and whitewater enthusiasts alike. During the championships, more than 500 freestyle kayakers from 45 different countries will dig through their bag of tricks for the ideal medley of moves — cartwheels, full flips and near vertical turns alongside other specialized maneuvers with names like “Roundhouse”, “McNasty” and “Donkey Flip” — in hopes of capturing the top prize. Thousands of spectators will line the river, cheering on those

aiming for glory. Kayaks used in these events are much shorter and lighter than traditional boats, something that ultimately creates more mobility for the rider to perform and work their way through the routine. At the helm of the festivities will be the “Wave Shaper, an underwater apparatus that generates waves and holes for competitors to work within. The backdrop for the festivities will be the Nantahala Outdoor Center, headquarters for the championships. The world-class Nantahala Adventure Resort, tucked along the side of the steep Appalachians, includes plenty of amenities such as restaurants, pub, a full-service bike store and outdoor gear shop. The facility also straddles the Appalachian Trail, with day-hikers heading for the hills and thru-hikers taking the opportunity to wander in for a bite or rest from the arduous journey. But not all the action is in the Nantahala Gorge. Bryson City is kicking off the event with the Opening Ceremonies Parade, following that with a full week of music and festivities, including a Big Air Competition, BMX show, rafting/boating trips and more. www.freestylekayaking2013.com www.noc.com www.greatsmokies.com swain county + the great smoky mountains

Mountains of Heritage If you want to immerse yourself in Appalachian heritage, look no further than Bryson City. From mountain music every Saturday night at the Great Smoky Mountains Train depot to artists practicing trades passed down through the generations, this Smokies town has it all. Festivals throughout the year highlight the unique Appalachian culture to be found here in Bryson City and Western North Carolina. The Heritage Festival, held in May, showcases mountain dance and music while offering traditional games such as log sawing contests and sack races. The Freedom Fest celebration held on July 4 offers a full day of traditional music and has become a family tradition for many mountain residents as well as visitors, and every September we honor famed Appalachian chronicler Horace Kephart during Kephart Days. Know what a side-hill plow is? Want to hear a first-hand account of a panther run-in? Step into the Oconaluftee Visitor Center in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and take a step back in time. Next door, check out the Mountain Farm Museum, complete with an old blacksmith shop, smokehouse and historic garden. In September, the museum hosts the Mountain Life Festival highlighting the pioneer lifestyle. A few of the old-time skills on display at these festivals include everything from basket-making demonstrations to wool spinning and chairmaking. There’s even a festival or two devoted to [20]

the ramp, a wild mountain culinary favorite similar to an onion. The Friday morning downtown farmer’s market showcases mountain agriculture with old-timey heirloom vegetables, eggs, locally made cheese, baked goods, homemade jelly, and crafts, while weekly music jams at the Bryson City library bring together mountain musicians.

Simply going on a hike in the Smokies provides a look at Appalachian life. Keep an eye out for the ruins of old farming settlements, with the telltale signs of ancient chimneys, rock walls and old homeplace foundations. The old Hazel Creek community in the park is a great way to get acquainted with early Appalachian life, with places like Bone Valley, named for the bones from a herd of cattle that froze to death in the late 1800s and restored structures from a boom town in old logging days.

Bryson City has country diners, eclectic cafes, down-home BBQ and upscale dining. There are plenty of coffee shops and bakeries for an afternoon espresso and goodie. Or, nothing beats an ice cream cone from one of the soda fountains while strolling down the sidewalks. Dining + Nightlife

Nightlife Where else offers big-city concerts by music icons like Willie Nelson and Reba McEntire and rock legends REO Speedwagon and Chicago in the small-town feel of the Smokies? Harrah’s Cherokee Casino & Hotel is more than gambling. Its concert schedule is the envy of the South. See harrahscherokee.com for a schedule of shows and ticket prices. Bryson City has plenty of local music offerings, from open mics, local coffee hangouts, live music at several pubs, and outdoor venues that host regular picking sessions. The Great Smoky Mountains Train Depot host a Saturday evening concert from June 1 to October at 6:30 to 8 p.m. The Marianna Black Library also has regular music jams on the first and third Thursdays of every month. From fireside wine bars to craft microbreweries, Bryson City has plenty to do after the sun goes down. [52]

Into the great wide open Just a short drive from downtown Bryson City, greater Swain County provides you with world-class outdoor adventures. Add in all the amenities and gear local outfitters can provide and you’ll soon be hitting the open air and breathtaking sites in the Great Smokies to hike, mountain bike, kayak, zipline or fish, amid the various avenues of activity. No matter your age or skill level, there’s plenty to do, leaving you only to figure out how much fun you can actually handle on vacation.

Mountain biking

Fishing

Riders travel from around the country to enjoy the mountain biking trails at Tsali Recreation Area. With 40 miles of trails and four loops to chose from, it’s rated as one of the top 10 places to ride in the U.S. Views of Fontana Lake, singletrack and wide gravel roads make this a great ride for the whole family. There’s also custom-built mountain biking trails at nearby Nantahala Outdoor Center and Fontana Village Resort. Local outfitters rent mountain bikes, as well as bikes for kids and bike trailers for small children. Group rides for road and mountain biking enthusiasts are held weekly.

From backcountry flyfishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to a lazy day of lake fishing, anglers visiting Swain County can wet their hooks with the finest brook or rainbow trout, bass and walleye in these pristine mountain waters. Bass tournaments on Fontana Lake and flyfishing tournaments on mountain rivers draw some of the best anglers in the country.

Nantahala Gorge, jump aboard a raft and hang on for a guided trip down the river. Professional outfitters cater to every group type and skill level, even if you’ve never held a paddle. You’ll be surrounded by some of the top paddlers in the world, who both work in the Gorge or travel here for challenging the Nantahala River. Paddling clinics are also offered, from beginners to experts honing their skills.

Boating Hiking If a walk in the woods is what your after, then look no farther than Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It has 800 miles of hiking trails with everything from a short jaunt to scenic overlooks to days of backcountry trekking. Its biodiversity is some of the richest in the world and creatures you won’t see at home such as elk, black bears and endangered salamanders populate the woods and streams. Short kid-friendly hikes to waterfalls will get you in the great outdoors without much hassle. You might also want to take a stroll down part of America’s most famous path, the Appalachian Trail. Best of all, it doesn’t cost a dime.

Fontana Lake Getting out on the water doesn’t have to mean the thrills, and possibly spills, of whitewater. From pontoon boat history tours to gripping jet boat rides, Fontana Lake is a great way to spend the day. Fontana is one of the most scenic lakes in the mountains. The lush, unspoiled slopes and majestic peaks of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park cradle the deep blue water. Keep an eye out: A pair of nesting bald eagles call the shores of Fontana home. There are several options for boat rentals, from fishing boats to pontoons and even houseboats. Nearby, a swimming area at Fontana Lake swimming area offers cool respite after a hike. Bring a raft to relax for the day or just a towel for a quick dip — and muster the courage to try one of the rope swings off the shore.

Until you’re here …

… we’re there for you. We know that as much as you’d like to be here, perhaps you haven’t made Western North Carolina your home — yet. However, you can still be a part of the community with the Smoky Mountain News, the region’s free weekly covering news, events and issues that affect life here in the mountains. And when the time comes to make Western North Carolinayour permanent address, or maybe to just come back and visit, our blue boxes will be waiting.
