Kivalina is a remote island off the coast of mainland Alaska facing a pronounced climate crisis which threatens the ecology of the island and the ways of life of the people who call it home. The arctic environment is warming faster than the average rate, rapidly melting sea ice and causing severe coastal erosion.
This project takes a stance to preserve the island by implementing solutions that are informed by Inupiaq ways of living, implementing infrastructure to fight against climactic hazards, housing pods that can change with shifting climate patterns, and communal spaces that foster intergenerational interactions to enable the teaching of traditional knowledge.
