Olá Smooth Jazz Fans all over the world! Sandra & Christian

Na nossa terceira edição, levamo-vos às espetaculares formações rochosas do Algarve. É aqui que, em finais de setembro, iremos abrir os portões de um pequeno paraíso: este refúgio de 5 estrelas, o VILA VITA Parc, estende-se num parque subtropical de 22 hectares, que se ergue sobre as falésias junto ao mar. Este resort, membro do “The Leading Hotels of the World”, situa-se em Alporchinhos, Porches, e tem muito para oferecer – entre outros 170 quartos, suites e villas, distribuídos em vários edifícios construídos em estilo mourisco. Juntam-se ainda nove restaurantes – um dos quais foi distinguido com duas estrelas Michelin -, seis bares, um café e uma Cave de Vinhos, na qual são feitas degustações de vinhos vintages, entre outros. O vinho da casa, o VILA VITA, é produzido na “Herdade dos Grous”, propriedade do VILA VITA Parc, tal como o azeite de produção própria. No âmbito do nosso festival vamos ainda efetuar uma visita a esta propriedade de 730 hectares – naturalmente com prova de vinhos incluída. Este é, mais uma vez, um alinhamento de excelente qualidade e diversidade. Mit unserem dritten jährlichen Event entführen wir Euch an die spektakuläre Felsenwelt der Algarve. Hier öffnen wir Ende September die Pforten eines kleinen Paradieses: Das 5-Sterne-Hideaway VILA VITA Parc erstreckt sich auf einem 22 Hektar großen, subtropischen Park über den Klippen direkt am Meer. Das Mitglied der „The Leading Hotels of the World” befindet sich in Porches und hat allerhand zu bieten – u.a. 170 Zimmer, Suiten und Villen, die in mehreren, im maurischen Stil gehaltenen Gebäuden untergebracht sind. Hinzu gesellen sich neun Restaurants – eines davon ausgezeichnet mit zwei Michelin-Sternen -, sechs Bars, ein Café und ein unterirdischer Gewölbeweinkeller, in dem u. a. der hauseigene Wein kredenzt wird. Angebaut wird dieser, wie das hauseigene Olivenöl, im VILA VITA Landgut „Herdade dos Grous“. Im Rahmen unseres Festivals werden wir das 730 Hektar große Anwesen besuchen – Weinverkostung inklusive. Weitere Stationen im Rahmenprogramm siehe nebenan. Auch das Festival-Line-up ist wieder hochkarätig und abwechslungsreich. Und wer neben all dem Programm noch Energien übrighat – für den hält VILA VITA Parc viele Möglichkeiten zur Zerstreuung, zum Relaxen etc. parat.

With our third annual event, we take you directly to the spectacular rock formations of the Algarve. At the end of September, we open the gates of a small paradise: The exclusive 5-star hideaway VILA VITA Parc extends on a 22-hectare, subtropical park directly on the seaside cliffs. The member of “The Leading Hotels of the World” is located in Armação de Pêra (Porches) and has much to offer – among others 170 rooms, suites and villas, which are housed in various Moorish-style buildings. In addition, it has nine restaurants – one of them has been awarded with two Michelin stars – six bars, a café and an underground vaulted wine cellar, where VILA VITA Parc proffers its wine. Just like the organic olive oil served at the hotel, it is grown and bottled on the VILA VITA owned estate “Herdade dos Grous”. As a part of our additional festival programme, we will visit the 730-hectare property - wine tasting included, of course. Other features in our additional program see next page. Der Komponist und Produzent Vincent Ingala spielt viele Instrumente. Seine erste Trommel kauften ihm seine Eltern als er vier war. Später bekam er eine Gitarre geschenkt und nach nur neun Monaten Unterricht klimperte er schon Elvis-Melodien nach Gehör. Dass da etwas Besonderes im Gange ist, bestätigte sich, als sich Vincent in der fünften Klasse erst das Keyboardspielen beibrachte, um es kurz darauf gegen das Saxofon einzutauschen. Davon war er begeistert und der Rest ist Geschichte. Bald schon teilte Vincent die Bühne mit Künstlern wie Peter White oder tourte mit Marion Meadows und Paul Taylor als „Sax & The City“. Obwohl er noch nicht einmal Mitte 20 ist, kann der charismatische Saxophonist schon einige Awards vorweisen (Billboard Smooth Jazz Artist of the Year 2012, Sirius XM Watercolors Breakthrough Artist of the Year 2013) und seine Musik schafft es regelmäßig an die Spitze der wichtigsten Charts der Welt (inkl. drei Billboard-Smooth-Jazz-Chart-#1-Hits). O compositor e produtor Vincent Ingala toca muitos instrumentos. Os pais compraram-lhe o seu primeiro tambor quando ele tinha quatro anos. Mais tarde recebeu de presente uma guitarra e após nove meses de aulas já dedilhava melodias do Elvis de ouvido. Quando Vincent, no quinto ano, já dominava o teclado (antes de o trocar pelo saxofone), confirmou-se que algo de especial se passava. Ele estava deslumbrado e o resto é história. Pouco tempo depois já Vincent partilhava o palco com artistas como Peter White ou fazia digressões com Marion Meadows e Paul Taylor como “Sax & The City”. Apesar de ainda não ter atingido os 25 anos, o carismático saxofonista já recebeu alguns prémios (Artista de Smooth Jazz do ano da Billboard em 2012, Artista revelação da Sirius XM Watercolors em 2013) e a sua música está regularmente no topo das tabelas mais importantes do mundo (incl. três vezes no número 1 da tabela da Billboard Smooth Jazz). A sua jovial presença em palco e a forma apaixonada como toca deixam o público num verdadeiro êxtase e proporcionam-lhe uma comunidade de fãs em constante crescimento.

Multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer Vincent Ingala was given his first drum set at the age of four. Later, he was given his first guitar and after only nine months of lessons in third grade, was strumming Elvis tunes that he had perfected by ear. That there was something special going on was confirmed when in fifth grade he mastered the keyboard before trading it in for the saxophone. He was hooked and the rest is history. Vincent soon played with artists such as Peter White and also joined forces with Marion Meadows and Paul Taylor (“Sax & The City”). Still in his early twenties, the charismatic saxophonist was named Billboard Smooth Jazz Artist of the Year in 2012, Sirius XM Watercolors Breakthrough Artist of the Year in 2013 and his music is consistently found atop the most noteworthy music charts in the world, including three #1 hits on the Billboard Smooth Jazz Chart. His fun-loving stage presence, combined with his passion for playing, elevates the crowd to an exciting frenzy and built an ever growing fan-base.

Um inglês que confere charme e alegria à sua música. O resultado: Smooth Jazz com uma vivacidade que falta a muitos outros neste género musical. Nascido em Luton em 1954, White era, já em criança, um apaixonado pela música. Aprendeu a tocar muitos instrumentos, incluindo clarinete, trombone, violino e piano. E naturalmente, como tantos outros jovens que cresceram no auge dos Beatles e Rolling Stones, tendeu para a guitarra. No entanto, quando a sua guitarra elétrica ardeu num incêndio, ele teve de recorrer a uma acústica. Da necessidade fez-se virtude: White descobriu o seu amor pela música acústica. Aos 20 anos foi convidado

a integrar a Al Stewart’s Band para a digressão pela Inglaterra, Escócia e Estados Unidos da América em 1975 – foi o início de uma colaboração de 20 anos. Trabalhou com Stewart, inicialmente como pianista e posteriormente também como guitarrista, compositor e coprodutor. Em 1979 mudaramse os dois para Los Angeles e fundaram a banda “Shot in the Dark” e uma discográfica de nome Lobster Music. Em 1990 White lançou o seu primeiro álbum a solo “Reveillez-Vous”. O álbum rapidamente se tornou o disco preferido das emissoras de rádio de jazz contemporâneo. Após treze álbuns com sucesso, White lançou em 2014 o seu atual CD a solo “Smile”.

Ein Engländer, der Charme und Verspieltheit in seine Musik legt. Das Ergebnis: Smooth Jazz mit einer Lebendigkeit, die vielen anderen in diesem Genre fehlt. 1954 in Luton geboren, war White schon als Kind in Musik vernarrt. Er lernte viele Instrument, inklusive Klarinette, Posaune, Violine und Klavier. Und natürlich, wie so viele Jugendliche, die in der Blütezeit der Beatles und Rolling Stones aufwuchsen, tendierte er zur Gitarre. Nachdem jedoch seine erste elektrische Gitarre in einem Feuer verbrannt war, musste er mit einer akustischen Vorlieb nehmen. Aus der Not wurde Tugend: White entdeckte seine Liebe zur akustischen Musik.

Mit 20 wurde er eingeladen, Al Stewart’s Band für die 1975erTour durch England, Schottland und die USA beizutreten – das war der Beginn einer 20-jährigen Zusammenarbeit. Zuerst arbeitete er als Pianist, später auch als Gitarrist, Komponist und Co-Produzent mit Stewart. 1979 zogen beide nach Los Angeles, gründeten die Band „Shot in the Dark“ und eine Plattenfirma namens Lobster Music. 1990 veröffentlichte White sein erstes Solo-Album „Reveillez-Vous“. Das Album wurde schnell zur Lieblingsscheibe der Contemporary Jazz-Radiosender. Dreizehn erfolgreiche Alben später veröffentlichte White 2014 seine aktuelle Solo-CD „Smile“.

An Englishman who accentuates his music with charm and playfulness. The result: Smooth Jazz with a spiritedness which many others in this genre lack. Born in Luton in 1954, White devoted himself to music already as a child. He learned to play several instruments, including the clarinet, trombone, violin and piano. And of course, like so many youngsters growing up during the heyday of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, he gravitated to the guitar. After his first electric guitar had burnt in a fire, however, he had to play an acoustic guitar. He made the best of it: White discovered his love for acoustic music. At 20, he was invited to join Al Stewart’s band for a tour of England, Scotland, and the U.S. in 1975. This was the beginning of a 20 year association. He worked with Stewart as a pianist at first, and later also as a guitarist, composer and co-producer. In 1979 both moved to Los Angeles, formed the band “Shot in the Dark” and a record label called Lobster Music. In 1990 White published his first solo CD “Reveillez-Vous”. The album soon became a favourite among contemporary jazz radio stations. 13 successful albums later, White released his last solo recording “Smile” (2014).

O guitarrista de jazz contemporâneo Matt Marschak nasceu em Long Island/Nova Iorque e cresceu numa casa repleta de músicos, rodeado de Rock n’ Roll. A sua interpretação foi inspirada num grande número de guitarristas lendários e na escola secundária o seu professor apresentou-lhe os sons de guitarra dos jazz e do blues de Larry Carlton, George Benson e Robben Ford. Quando acabou a escola, Marshak atuou com bandas e artistas de topo numa enorme variedade de estilos musicais. Em 2001 lançou o seu primeiro CD e começou cada vez mais a chamar a atenção em Nova Iorque. Pouco tempo depois inaugurou a popular digressão “Guitars & Saxes” e em 2008 a JazzTimes Magazin homenageou o seu álbum “On the Rocks” com a declaração “um dos melhores CDs de Smooth Jazz do ano”. No seu trabalho Marshak lança constantemente mão da maravilhosa variedade da música e matiza o seu estilo clássico fluído com jazz, blues, rock, pop ou Down-Home Boogie. Passing guitarists inspired his playing, and in high school his teacher turned him on to the contemporary jazz and blues guitar sounds of Larry Carlton, George Benson and Robben Ford. Once out of college, Marshak performed a variety of musical styles with New York’s top original bands and artists. In 2001, Marshak released his debut CD and began to get more notice in New York. Later he opened for the popular “Guitars & Saxes” tour. In 2008 his album “On the Rocks” earned praise from JazzTimes magazine as “one of the best smooth jazz CDs of the year, for sure”. Again and again, Marshak taps into the wonderful diversity of music, shading his classic and fluid style with jazz, blues, rock, pop or down-home boogie. Keeping his music evolving in new directions is important to the guitarist, who is popular on the tour circuit.

Der Contemporary Jazz-Gitarrist Matt Marshak wurde in Long Island/New York geboren und wuchs in einem Haus voller Musiker, umgeben von Rock ‘n’ Roll, auf. Eine ganze Reihe legendärer Gitarristen haben sein Spiel inspiriert und in der High School brachte ihn sein Lehrer auf den zeitgenössischen Jazz- und Blues-Gitarren-Sound von Larry Carlton, George Benson und Robben Ford. Als er die Schule verlassen hatte, gab Marshak im Reigen mit top New Yorker Bands und Künstlern eine Vielzahl musikalischer Stile zum Besten. 2001 veröffentlichte er seine erste CD und erregte immer mehr Aufmerksamkeit in New York. Kurz darauf eröffnete er die beliebte „Guitars & Saxes”-Tour und 2008 adelte das JazzTimes Magazin sein Album „On the Rocks” mit dem Statement „eine der besten Smooth Jazz-CDs des Jahres”. Immer wieder bedient sich Marshak in seiner Arbeit der wunderbaren Vielfalt der Musik und schattiert seinen klassisch-flüssigen Stil mit Jazz, Blues, Rock, Pop oder Down-Home Boogie. Dass sich seine Musik stetig in neue Richtungen entwickeln kann, ist für den Gitarristen, der im Moment viel und erfolgreich auf Tour ist, sehr wichtig.

Eric studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston with the legendary saxophone professor, Joe Viola. By the time he left Berklee, Eric had achieved the highest proficiency rating given by the school. In 1995, Eric was awarded the Berklee Distinguished Alumnus Award for outstanding achievements in contemporary music. His professional career started in 1980 with famed trumpeter Al Hirt. After returning to Los Angeles Eric became a member of the Chick Corea Elektric Band. He recorded 6 CD’s with them and won 2 Grammy Awards. Eric went on to perform with artists such as Elton John, Barbra Streisand, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick, Lee Ritenour, George Duke, David Benoit, Patti Austin, David Lee Roth and many others. Overall, the saxplayer has since gone on to perform in over 75 different countries, recorded 15 solo CD’s and has played on hundreds of records, films and tv shows. A native of Chicago, Michael Manson took interest in the electric guitar at the age of 14. Influenced by Al Jarreau and intrigued by the technique of Jarreau’s bass player Abe Laboriel, his love of music soon began to shift towards the bass guitar. At 15, he and a group of friends formed Togetherness, releasing an album and two singles before Manson left to join the Navy six years later. After returning to Chicago to obtain both his B.A. and Master’s in Music degrees, he joined City Lights and began performing regularly on Chicago’s jazz circuit. In 1999, he was invited to play the Montreux Casino Lights ‘99 festival. Sharing the stage with the likes of Boney James, George Duke and Kirk Whalum. Afterwards, George invited him onboard the Montreux Jazz tour. Since then, Manson has performed with the who is who of contemporary jazz and also co-produced, for example, Brian Culbertson’s “I’m Gonna Miss You”, but he also continued to branch out, producing and writing while on tour. In 2002, Bass-master Michael Manson moved from sideman to center-stage, releasing his solo debut “The Bottom Line”. Three albums followed and meanwhile he has joined the ranks of today’s premiere jazz artists.

Die musikalische Bildfläche betrat der in Allentown/Pennsylvania geborene Trompeter und Sänger erstmals als Mitglied der Jazz-Fusion-Band Auracle, die sich nach zwei LPs wieder auflöste. David Benoit David Benoit wurde in Kalifornien geboren und wuchs in LA auf. Mit dem Jazz-Virus infizierte er sich, als er 1965 ein CharlieBrown-Special im Fernsehen gesehen und die Musik von Vince Guaraldi gehört hatte. „Als ich dieses Jazz-Klavier-Trio hörte, wusste ich, dass ich wie er spielen wollte“, sagt der Pianist, Komponist und Arrangeur, der als einer der Gründerväter des Contemporary Jazz gilt. Mit dem Klavierspiel begann er, als er 13 war, und studierte später Musiktheorie, Komposition, Orchestrierung und Filmmusik bei verschiedenen namhaften Lehrmeistern. Seitdem hat er mit einer Vielzahl beeindruckender Musiker zusammengearbeitet, darunter die Rippingtons, Dave Koz, Faith Hill, David Sanborn, CeCe Winans und Brian McKnight. Sein erstes Album veröffentlichte er 1977, danach folgten viele weitere Chartstürmer. Insgesamt wurde David dreimal für den Grammy nominiert und 2010 mit dem Lifetime Achievement Award der American Smooth Jazz Awards ausgezeichnet. He was bitten by the jazz bug after watching a Charlie Brown special on TV and listening to the music of Vince Guaraldi in 1965. “When I heard that jazz piano trio, that was the defining moment when I decided that I wanted to play like Vince Guaraldi”, says the pianist, composer and arranger. Aged thirteen, he began studying piano and later he also studied music theory. composition, orchestration and film scoring with several designated masters. Since then, he’s worked with an impressive potpourri of musicians including the Rippingtons, Dave Koz, Faith Hill, David Sanborn, CeCe Winans and Brian McKnight. His first album was released in 1977, followed by many other chart toppers. Overall, David has received three Grammy nominations and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Smooth Jazz Awards in 2010. With his most recent CD he wanted to show other dimensions of his artistry and the result is his first recording with a vocalist: featuring Jane Monheit, a Grammy-nominated chanteuse from New York.

Althea René Mehr als zehn Jahre lang war sie in Detroit als Wayne County Deputy Sheriff angestellt – heute arbeitet sie Vollzeit als Musikerin: Althea erblickte am 25. Dezember in Detroit das Licht der Welt und begann ihre musikalische Reise im Alter von vier. Sie studierte klassische Musik an der Howard University in Washington D. C. und ließ sich später inspirieren von Yusef Lateef, Ian Anderson und ihrem Vater Dezie McCullers – einem der ursprünglichen Funk Brothers von Motown. Seither hat sie ihren eigenen kreativen Stil entwickelt und nicht wenige betrachten die Flötistin als Meisterin ihres Handwerks. Ihre CD „In The Flow“ hat sie im Mai 2013 veröffentlicht. For more than 10 years she was employed as a Wayne County Deputy Sheriff in Detroit – today, she is a full-time performing/recording artist: Althea was born December 25th in Detroit and began her musical journey at the age four. In April 2015, she and her rhythm section recorded her first live project on stage of the Detroit Public Library with a free concert: A compilation of some of her greatest hits and arguably her strongest work to date.

Trabalhou durante mais de dez anos em Detroit como Wayne County Deputy Sheriff – hoje trabalha como música a tempo inteiro: Althea veio ao mundo a 25 de Dezembro em Detroit e começou a sua viagem musical com quatro anos. Estudou música clássica na Howard University em Washington D. C. e, mais tarde, deixouse influenciar por yusef Lateef, Ian Anderson e o seu pai Dezie McCullers – um dos Funk Brothers iniciais da Motown. A partir daí tem desenvolvido o seu próprio estilo criativo e muitos são os que consideram a flautista como uma mestre no seu ofício. Lançou o seu CD “In The Flow” em maio de 2013. A faixa-título que ela escreveu com o produtor e vencedor de um Grammy, Michael Broening, tornou-se o seu grande êxito e alcançou o primeiro lugar da tabela da Billboard e da Smooth Jazz. Com isto tornou-se a primeira flautista de sempre a atingir um número um na história da tabela Billboard. Em abril de 2015 ela e a sua seção rítmica gravaram o seu primeiro projeto ao vivo no palco da Detroit Public Library: uma compilação dos seus maiores êxitos e, seguramente, a sua obra mais forte até agora.

The Band LUTZ DETERRA Keyboards | Musical Director | www.deterra.de The pianist, composer, arranger and producer Lutz Deterra was touring on international stages such as the Wembley Hall in London or the Kumputa Festival Hall in Kuala Lumpur on behalf of the company Technics Musical Instruments from 1982. In 1991, Lutz became member of the Matsushita Musician’s team, which was designing the musical software and concepts of Technics keyboards in Japan. In that time, he also met the jazz musician Dave Grusin, with whom he toured in England later. His quick ability to adapt and his “quick ear” made him a popular session musician in Germany. Since then, Lutz Deterra has been playing in several band formations and as a keyboardist in

diverse musical world successes, such as Starlight Express, Elizabeth, Miami Nights, Tabaluga and Saturday Night Fever. In 1997, he released his first solo album “Out of my pocket“. In 1999, he became musical director of the California Sunset Records Allstar Band and toured through Europe with stars of the U.S. jazz scene like Nelson Rangell, Nathan East, Rick Braun, Peter White, Eric Marienthal and Gabriela Anders. This was followed by engagements with Marla Glen in the ARD (TV), Jennifer Rush in London and 72 times in the TV show “Have you ever” on VOX. Till this date, Lutz Deterra prefers performing live on stage. In 2011, he released his second CD “Rue Parnasse”.

Mark Jaimes is a London based session musician with a long and varied career. He started playing guitar at age 5 and did his first gig age 9. After several record contracts playing in soul bands, he decided to pursue a career as a session musician and became the resident guitarist for David Dundas Music, playing on many high profile jingles for TV and film. He toured with various artists until ’98 when after a recording session with Simply Red, was asked to join the band. Mark toured and recorded with Simply Red for 5 years until 2003, then embarked on a career as a producer with longtime friend and musician Danny Saxon. He produced hits for various artists including Simply Red and Luciano Pavarotti, and is currently working with legendary songwriter Rod Temperton. Mark is also a regular on the smooth jazz scene, having played with Dave Koz, Brian Culbertson, Peter White, Rick Braun, Richard Elliott, Chuck Loeb, Euge Groove, Mindi Abair and many more.


MARCUS FINNIE Drums | www.marcusfinnie.com A Memphis native, Marcus Finnie began playing drums at church accompanying his mother on organ. Once he moved to Murfreesboro for college, he furthered his musical experience in marching band, jazz band and orchestra. He then switched his major to the school’s most popular major, “Recording Arts” to learn production and studio techniques. While in college he interned with Grammy Producers Cedric and Victor Caldwell where he got to record with Smokie Norful, T.D. Jakes, Vickie Winans and Donnie McClurkin. After college that year, one gig led to another that led to another. After having toured the summer with Contemporary Christian Artist Warren Barfield, he got the call

to go on the road with Donna Summer. While on the road with her, he met Billy Preston and in between Donna’s tours, he went out with Billy Preston and Larry Carlton traveling over seas numerous times within weeks. Over the last few years on he would go on to tour Japan and South Africa with Earl Klugh, Kirk Whalum and shortly afterwards BWB (Rick Braun, Kirk Whalum, and Norman Brown). Marcus also performed with Lalah Hathaway, Keiko Matsui, Nelson Rangell, Chuck Wicks, Gerald Veasly, Monty Montgomery, and Gerald Albright. He continues recording and touring while teaching and conducting clinics. He also writes, produces and arranges R&B, pop and jazz.

GÜNTER ASBECK Bass | www.guenterasbeck.de Günter Asbeck is a freelance bass player, singer, songwriter, arranger and music producer based in Cologne, Germany. Over the years he has worked on stage and in the studio (bass & vocals) with artists such as Cascada, Gloria Gaynor, Jennifer Rush, Udo Lindenberg, James Blunt, Hiram Bullock, Sugarbabes, Rick Braun, Anthony Weedon, Slimman, Nathan East, Janita, The Rasmus, etc. As producer and remixer he was part of “Fudge X” from 2005-2007. Together with producer legend Jan Hammer, he did the track “Crockett’s Theme – In da house remix” for the hollywood movie “Miami Vice” with Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. The track stayed in the German Top10 for ten weeks. In 2003, he founded a song writing team with Peter Wieschermann. Besides songs for German TV series (RTL), the team also wrote the song “Yesterdays World” for the TV spots of the German childrens-aid-foundation “Kindernothilfe”, which ran on all major german TV stations. In 2006, he played on two album tracks of the German project Cascada, which won the World Music Awards as “Best Selling German Act” in 2007. He also writes and produces music for advertising spots on behalf of companies such as Kia motors, Klosterfrau, etc.

KIM WATERS – Rhythm And Romance In my review about Kim Waters’ album “This Heart of Mine” one finds a rather complete discography of his works. This year we can upgrade the list with another gem entitled “Rhythm and Romance”. The title is program. Groove and romantic content are some powerful components of a successful blending. Kim Waters did all instruments on this new project supported by Dave Manley (guitars), and on selected tracks by Chris Davis (keyboards), James Robinson and Christi Jones (background vocals). The aesthetic musical appeal of “Bring It” is undeniable. Beside the hooking melody the starting tune offers Waters’ committed handling of his saxophone. “Rhythm And Romance” has a wonderful drive by a spectacular bass line on which Waters’ sax develops an incredible dynamic. The piano solo is fitting seamlessly in the shining composition. The album is a perfect balance of what makes music entertaining. Kim Waters is an experienced and prolific multi-instrumentalist with an immaculate sense for the right notes.

STEVE COLE – Turn It Up Saxophonist Steve Cole has made a great impact on the smooth jazz scene with “Stay Awhile” (1998), “Between Us” (2000), “NY LA” (2003), “Spin” (2005), “True” (2006), “Moonlight” (2011) and “Pulse” (2013). Now he returns with a new shining star. “Turn It Up” is produced by David Mann. His specialty is fine horn arrangements giving every sax album a powerful background. “Sidechain” starts pumped up that way. David Mann and friends flavor Cole’s performance. One sax is not enough. Steve Cole puts the pedal to the metal and builds a chorus out of tenor and alto saxophones to create “Turn It Up”. In a tight crowd of smooth jazz saxophonists, he is a master of soft and gentle sounds like on the mellifluous “Reverence”. “She’s the One” makes romance to a nice simmer party. “Mirage” makes a brilliant transition to modern smooth jazz with sonic flow and finesse. “On Turn It Up” there is tried and tested, but also pioneering music. Steve Cole has understood that one must not stop, but has to evolve conceptually to remain viable for the future.

MATT MARSHAK – New york In the world of music artistry guitarist Matt Marshak has a secure and well deserved place. His life circle and sphere of activity is New York. A good reason to call his new album “New York” (2016). Matt recorded the album in one day at Secret Studios in Baltimore supported by Sean Michael Ray (bass), Benjie Porecki (keys), Carl Anderson (drums), and Ronnie Queen (vocals on “Real Music”). Most important was for Matt a human and natural sound with no drum programming and loops. He has implemented this concept on his album in all its consequences. “North Carolina” starts the album in folk style influenced by the music of Bob Dylan. With the intention of leaving the perceived limitations of smooth jazz Matt travels the road to emotional folk music. “Real Music” makes the people dance is the credo, expressively sung by Ronnie Queen and performed by guitarist Marshak. Has the smooth jazz genre lost with “New York” a great guitarist or is Matt Marshak just pushing the musical boundaries? Don’t worry, it’s all about good music.

JEF KEARNS – The Flute Toronto based flautist Jef Kearns started his solo career with the album “On the Level” (2009), followed by “Soulfisticated” (2013) and this year “The Flute”. Jef Kearns created this EP with several producers, who played all the other instruments. That explains the nature of his music, which is consistently detailed but also meticulously planned. The flute is considered as the shyest instrument. Although it takes the most amount of air under the instruments, the tone is overall warm, heartfelt and lovely. “Hazy” takes a promising start with a balanced and beautifully tuned instrumentation. Producer Timian shows a pronounced sensitivity and empathy in creating the perfect soundscape to let Jef shine on his lead instrument. The hip hop rhythm however stands in contrast to the subtle sound arrangement. The combination of hip hop beat and flute is obviously intended as Jef demonstrates on “Hurricane”, on this EP presented as “Cyclonic Mix”. “The Flute” is a sonic revelation. A manifest creative breadth of an instrument, which is rare in this field of music.

The 5th annual Mallorca Smooth Jazz Festival took place like every year at the Protur Biomar Hotel in Mallorca, Spain over the first weekend in May, featuring a top-notch lineup of smooth jazz players, backed by two local bands of professional players from Germany and England. Smooth jazz fans from all over Europe and the US gathered on this Mediterranean island to have fun, meet likeminded music aficionados and mingle with the artists who stay at the same hotel, often with their spouses. This 5 star hotel provides the perfect setting for this event, with the hotel director being a big supporter of the event.

For the early birds, the festival started already on Tuesday with the gala dinner with all the artists and musicians present, plus a concert by the local jazz-funk band Saxophobia Funk Project, followed by excursions and other activities the next days for people wanting to experience the island. This year, a local Bodega was visited, enhanced by a concert of Team Harmony, a sax and harmonica duo from Holland. Wednesday night, the festival opened officially with the Smooth Jazz Allstars, a great jam session with all artist of the festival together which was held open-air at the unfinished church Església Nova in Son Servera, featuring Gerald Albright, Nathan East, Paul Taylor, Steve Cole, Gerald Veasley, Eric Darius, Gail Jhonson, Nils, Joey Sommerville and more. Thursday night bassist Gerald Veasley did a well received performance, while saxophonist Eric Darius brought the house down with his high energy playing. After this concert, there was the nightly after show chillout party with DJ Richard Edwards, having people partying till the wee hours. I joined the festivities a little later on Friday with the show of keyboardist Gail Jhonson doing her own music, mainly featuring material from her last two albums “Her Story” and “New Beginnings”, with special guest Steve Cole on sax, followed by saxophonist extraordinaire Gerald Albright, who was vowing the crowd with his flawless playing and tight show. A funny thing happened when the “Soul Train” line he initiated ended up right on the stage, having Gerald jump onto the occasion, inviting everybody to get up on the stage and dance.

Sunday, the festival came to a close with the shows of saxophonist Paul Taylor, mesmerizing the crowd with his beautiful playing on the alto and soprano saxophones, drawing from his vast catalog, before guitarist Nils provided the last concert, doing material from his current release “Alley Cat”, plus some of his biggest hits, Paul Taylor guested on two tracks. As an encore, he played a beautiful rendition of “Europa”, which ended the festival in style. Once again, this edition of the Mallorca Smooth Jazz Festival was a memorable experience with many exciting musical moments, enjoyable time with friends and artists, and some relaxation in the facilities of the hotel. Mark your calendar for next year’s Mallorca Smooth Jazz Festival which will take place over the last weekend of April 2017.

Saturday provided four shows, two in the afternoon and two in the evening. Saxophonist Steve Cole kicked it off in style with his soulful playing, being a crowd favorite, his song “Curtis” gave me goosebumps. Next were Peet Project from Hungary, a great band of young players led by violinist Péter Ferencz delivering an upbeat show with lots of catchy songs, entertaining us to the fullest. After the dinner break, world class bassist Nathan East, supported by keyboardist Gail Jhonson who served as musical director, performed material from his current solo release plus a few well selected covers, especially memorable was his rendition of Stevie’s “Overjoyed”, featuring the sweet sax of Paul Taylor. This was a very sophisticated and varied set. After that, trumpet player Joey Sommerville wrapped up the night with a funky show of instrumentals and vocals as well, he was supported by the great local saxophonist Ramon Miguel, who provided several outstanding solos.
