Willkommen beim MALLORCA SMOOTH JAZZ FESTVAL – dem einzigen Smooth Jazz Festival im europäischen Mittelmeerraum. Genau genommen in Sa Coma, an der wunderschönen Ostküste der spanischen Insel Mallorca.

Im Mai erwartet Sie hier ein Musikfestival mit einzigartiger Live-Musik im exklusiven Ambiente des Protur Biomar Gran Hotel & Spa. Das 5-Sterne-Hotel ist zugleich Veranstaltungsort und besticht durch seine elegante und moderne Ausstattung, einen vollwertig ausgestatteten Spa-Bereich sowie gepflegte Garten- und Poolanlagen (outdoor/indoor). Direkt am Naturpark Punta de n’Amer gelegen, ist der Strand von Sa Coma nur 300 Meter entfernt.

Welcome to the MALLORCA SMOOTH JAZZ FESTIVAL – the only smooth jazz festival in the European Mediterranean area. Actually, in Sa Coma, on the beautiful east coast of the Spanish island Mallorca.

In May, a music festival with unique live music awaits you in the exclusive ambience of the Protur Biomar Gran Hotel & Spa. The 5-star hotel is also the venue and is characterized by an elegant and modern equipment, a full-equipped spa area as well as landscaped gardens and swimming pools (indoor / outdoor). Located only 300 metres from the beach, right on the Punta de n’Amer natural park.

This musical (short) vacation is all about enjoying the finer things in life. Good music.

Good food. Good wine. Good entertainment. Good weather. Good prospects for recovery and a unique experience in the breathtaking scenery of the Mediterranean Sea. On stage, we welcome some of the biggest and most successful international stars of the Contemporary and Smooth Jazz scene. El talento de Paul Brown como artista y productor le han valido dos premios Grammy y una impresionante sucesión de más de 50 éxitos número uno en la listas de Radio & Discos del smooth jazz y jazz contemporáneo. En una ilustre carrera, que abarca más de dos décadas, Brown ha trabajado en proyectos para artistas tan influyentes como George Benson, Al Jarreau, Kirk Whalum, Patti Austin, Norman Brown, Luther Vandross, Larry Carlton, Euge Groove, Boney James, Rick Braun, o Peter White, entre muchos otros.

Brown nació y se crió en Los Angeles. Empezó a tocar la batería a la edad de cinco años y cogió su primera guitarra con 7 años.

Después de estudiar música y matemáticas en la Universidad de Oregon, Brown regresó a Los Ángeles y comenzó su ascenso a la fama produciendo algunos de los más grandes éxitos del jazz contemporáneo. En 2004, finalmente decidió abandonar la silla de productor y se lanzó como músico intérprete con su gran CD debut „Up Front“. El guitarrista, compositor y productor Marc Antoine nació en París (Francia) en 1963. Cuando cumplió 11 años sus padres le regalaron su primera guitarra que pronto se convirtió en su tercer brazo. En 1988 se trasladó a Londres y más tarde fue aclamado en Tokio, a finales de los 90, aterrizó en Los Ángeles. Se quedó allí 12 años, tocando para la “realeza” del mundo de la música, como Sting, Rod Stewart, Cher y George Benson entre otros. Compuso e interpretó la banda sonora de películas como ‚Get Shorty‘, ‚The Fan‘, ‚Patch Adams‘ y ‚Demolition Man‘.

Marc empezó una exitosa carrera en solitario en 1994 con su primer álbum “Classical Soul”. En 2007 lanzó “Hi-Lo Split” (nominado en el ‚Billboard‘ latino al mejor álbum de jazz del año) seguido de su último álbum hasta la fecha, “Foreign Xchange”, una colaboración acertada y exitosa con el guitarrista Paul Brown.

Gitarrist, Komponist und Produzent Marc Antoine wurde 1963 in Paris geboren und bekam seine erste Gitarre, als er 11 Jahre alt war – sehr schnell wurde sie zu seinem „dritten Arm“. 1988 ging er nach London, wurde später ein gefeierter Session-Musiker in Tokyo und zog in den späten 90ern schließlich nach Los Angeles. Dort blieb er zwölf Jahre lang und spielte für Musikgrößen wie Sting, Celine Dion, Rod Stewart, Cher und George Benson. Derzeit lebt Marc in Madrid.

Seine erfolgreiche Solo-Karriere begann Marc 1994 mit seinem ersten Album „Classical Soul“. Nach einer erfolgreichen Zusammenarbeit mit Gitarrist Paul Brown, “Foreign Xchange” (2009), folgte 2010 das Album “My Classical Way” und 2012 seine aktuelle CD “Guitar Destiny”. Guitarist, composer and producer Marc Antoine was born in Paris (France) in 1963. When he was 11 years old his parents bought him his first guitar which quickly became his third arm. Rick Braun vive en Los Angeles y toca la trompeta desde que era un niño. Su conocido estilo ricamente melódico atrae a legiones de fans desde el lanzamiento de su primer álbum „ Intimate Secrets „ en 1993. Menos conocido es el hecho de que ha sido también cantante, y uno bueno además, la mayor parte de su vida, acompañando a Rod Stewart y a Sade, entre otros, tanto con su voz como con su estelar trompeta.

El talento de Rick pronto llamó la atención de muchas discográficas de alto nivel, así como de artistas de primer nivel en gira. Ha colaborado con tan ecléctica mezcla de artistas como Tina Turner, Natalie Cole, Tom Petty, Glen Frey, Boney James, Gerald Albright, Kirk Whalum, Dave Koz, Richard Elliot o Jonathan Butler entre muchos más. El saxofonista Michael Lington es natural de Dinamarca pero en 1990 se mudó a Los Angeles, EEUU, donde en 2008 se convertiría en ciudadano de ese país. Comenzó su carrera musical en la banda de Bobby Caldwell y más adelante estuvo de gira durante tres años con la leyenda del jazz y el R&B, Randy Crawford. Saxophonist Michael Lington is a native of Denmark. It was in 1990 that Lington moved to Los Angeles, becoming a U.S. citizen in 2008. He got his musical start in Bobby Caldwell’s band and later toured for three years with jazz and R&B legend Randy Crawford. The saxophonist has always been first-call for musical superstars. He’s opened arena shows for Barry Manilow and recently spent 18 months on tour with Grammy Award-winning singer Michael Bolton as his special guest.

Lington has been a familiar face on contemporary jazz since his self titled major-label debut in 1997. Keyboardist, composer and studio musician Brian Simpson is known for his ability to sculpt timeless love songs, soulful party anthems and melodies that stay on your mind. Hailing from Gurnee, Illinois, and growing up in a house filled with music, Brian always knew music would play center stage in his life. After graduating from Northern Illinois University, Simpson relocated to Los Angeles where he quickly immersed himself in the local jazz scene. Contemporary jazz guitarist Matt Marshak, a native of Long Island, New York, grew up on rock ‘n’ roll music in a home full of musicians. Passing guitarists inspired his playing, and in high school his teacher turned him on to the contemporary jazz and blues guitar sounds of Larry Carlton, George Benson and Robben Ford. Once out of college, Marshak performed a variety of musical styles with New York’s top original bands and artists. In 2001, Marshak released his debut CD “Preservation” and began to get more notice in New York. Later he opened for the popular “Guitars & Saxes” tour. In 2008 his album “On the Rocks” earned praise from JazzTimes magazine as “one of the best smooth jazz CDs of the year, for sure.”

In his latest release “Colors of Me” (2012), Matt Marshak taps into the wonderful diversity of music, shading his classic and fluid style with jazz, blues, rock, pop and even down-home boogie.

Marshak’s seventh major release follows 2011‘s highly received “Urban Folktales”, which captured a sophisticated late-night vibe and boasted a #1 song on the 2011 indie jazz chart, “Silent Knowing.”

Desde entonces, Lutz Deterra toca en formaciones de banda como teclista en diversos éxitos musicales del mundo, como Starlight Express, Elizabeth, Noches de Miami, Tabaluga y Fiebre del sábado noche. En 1997 lanzó su primer álbum en solitario „Out of my poket“. En 1999 se fue de gira con la banda “California Sunset Records Allstar” y viajó a través de Europa con estrellas de la escena del jazz de EE.UU. como Nelson Rangell, Nathan East, Rick Braun, Peter White, Eric Marienthal y Gabriela Anders. A esto le siguieron actuaciones junto a Marla Glen en la cadena de televisión alemana ARD, Jennifer Rush en Londres y a actuar hasta en 72 ocasiones en el programa de televisión „Have you ever“, realizado por la cadena VOX. Hasta la fecha, Lutz Deterra prefiere actuar en vivo sobre el escenario. En 2011 publicó su CD “Rue Parnasse”.

Der Pianist, Komponist, Arrangeur und Produzent Lutz Deterra tourte ab 1982 für die Firma Technics Musical Instruments auf internationalen Bühnen wie die Wembley-Hall in London oder die Kumputa Festival-Hall in Kuala Lumpur. Seit 1991 ist Lutz Mitglied des „Matsushita Musician-Team’s”, das die musikalische Software und Konzeption der Technics-Keyboards in Japan entwirft. Hier lernte er auch den JazzMusiker Dave Grusin kennen, mit dem er alsbald in England Konzerte gab. Seine schnelle Anpassungsfähigkeit und seine ‚schnellen Ohren‘ haben ihn währenddessen in Deutschland zum gefragten SessionMusiker gemacht. Lutz spielt seitdem in mehreren Bandformationen und ist Keyboarder in diversen Musical-Welterfolgen, u. a. Starlight Express, Elisabeth, Miami Nights, Tabaluga und Saturday Night Fever.

1997 erschien sein Solo-Album „Out of my pocket”. 1999 tourte er mit den Stars der US-Jazz-Szene Nelson Rangell, Nathan East, Rick Braun, Peter White, Eric Marienthal und Gabriela Anders durch Europa. Es folgten Engagements u. a. mit Marla Glen in der ARD und Jennifer Rush in London. 72 mal trat er in der TV-Musikshow „Hast du Töne“ (VOX) auf. 2011 veröffentlichte er die CD „Rue Parnasse“.

The pianist, composer, arranger and producer Lutz Deterra was touring on international stages such as the Wembley Hall in London or the Kumputa Festival Hall in Kuala Lumpur on behalf of the company Technics Musical Instruments from 1982. 1991, Lutz became member of the Matsushita Musician’s team, which was designing the musical software and concepts of Technics keyboards in Japan. In that time, he also met

GÜNTER ASBECK Bass Günter Asbeck es un bajista profesional independiente, cantante, compositor, arreglista y productor musical con sede en Köln, Alemania. A través de los años ha trabajado sobre los escenarios y en estudio con artistas como Cascada, Gloria Gaynor, Jennifer Rush, Udo Lindenberg, James Blunt, Hiram Bullock, Sugarbabes, Rick Braun, Anthony Weedon, Slimman, Nathan East, Janita, The Rasmus, etc. Como productor y mezclador formó parte de „Fudge X“ desde 2005 al 2007. Junto con el legendario productor Jan Hammer, creó el tema „Crockett Theme - In da house remix“ para la película de Hollywood „Miami Vice“, con Colin Farrell y Jamie Foxx, que se mantuvo durante diez semanas en el Top10 alemán. In der Musical-Szene ist Andy als „Inventar” bekannt – er spielte für große Produktionen wie Starlight Express, Jesus Christ Superstar, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Westside Story, Evita etc. Neben gemeinsamen Projekten mit Caterina Valente, Bill Ramsey, Howard Carpendale, Jennifer Rush, Joy Fleming, Shirley Bassey und Götz Alsmann tourte er durch Europa mit Erik Marienthal, Slim Man, Anthony Weedon, Vonda Shepard, Gabriela Anders, Rick Braun und Janita.

After High School Graduation Andy studied classical music and jazz at the Cologne Conservatory of Music. At that time he already worked as professional musician in many bands. In her successful career, Patti recorded and performed with many famous artists and bands like Dave Weckl, Buika, Chenoa, Molly Duncan (Average White Band), The Barry White Experience, Jeffrey Daniel, Victor Wooten, Steve Bailey and many more. Her talent made her travelling all over the world, playing many famous festivals and shows, such as the Asian Beat Competition with Nathan East in Taiwan in 2008.

PATTI BALLINAS Drums Patti Ballinas, mitad escocesa y mitad mexicana, comenzó a tocar la batería a los 8 años. Ella y sus hermanas, Carol e Ivonne, fundaron la banda „Angels‘ Delight „ con la que durante su gira por Escocia aparecieron en la televisión nacional. Después de trasladarse a Mallorca, España, la banda se presentó bajo el nombre de „Aqua Vitae“ y ya en la isla formaron la banda „The Motown Sisters“ con la que fueron teloneras de James Brown en Mallorca en 1998. Patti pronto se convirtió en una batería de sesión muy solicitada, y tiene el honor de ser la primera representante de Yamaha Drums de España, que la ha llevado a recorrer el mundo haciendo demostraciones en solitario y junto a Akira Jimbo y Wolfgang Haffner, con baterías electrónicas y acústicas tanto en España como en Portugal, Alemania, Italia, México, Ucrania, Jordania y Japón. MARTIN FESKE Guitar El guitarrista Martin Feske, que estudió guitarra en Köln, Alemania y en UNT en Texas / EEUU, ha colaborado durante toda su carrera con numerosos músicos. Entre ellos se encuentran artistas muy diferentes como Till Bronner, Jeff Lorber, Lew Soloff, Peter Fessler Peter Kraus, Bill Ramsey, Andru Donalds y Sasha. Su actividad concertística le ha llevado, entre otros, al Jazzfestival Leverkusen en Berlin y por toda Europa. Trabaja además como jefe del departamento Jazz/Pop de guitarra en la Escuela Oficial de Música en Bocholt y enseña guitarra Jazz/Pop en el Conservatorio de Música de Münster.

Para los amantes del Smooth Jazz, el cartel ofrecido por el Protur Biomar Gran Hotel & Spa***** era poco menos que espectacular. Reunir en un mismo fin de semana a cinco de las más grandes figuras de este género era casi impensable. La perseverancia de Jaime Nebot, junto con la experiencia de Christian Bössner, responsable del festival de Augsburgo, hicieron posible que, durante el fin de semana del 27 al 29 de abril, pudiéramos ver a David Benoit, Marc Antoine, Warren Hill , Jeff Lorber y Eric Darius, junto con el hasta ese momento desconocido para mí, Uné.

Aplicaron la fórmula ya probada con éxito en Augsburgo. Un grupo formado por músicos alemanes de contrastada solvencia y que demostraron en todo momento su profesionalidad., formaban la banda que acompañaban a los mencionados solistas. Integran dicha banda Lutz Deterra (Teclados y director musical), Martin Feske (Guitarra), Günter Asbeck (Bajo eléctrico), Heiko Braun (Batería) y Michael Hügel (Saxo Tenor).

El encabezamiento de la crónica dice „PRIMERA GRAN FIESTA“ (Jaime Nebot confirmó que habrá continuación), porque eso es lo que fue. El público que se alojó en el hotel pudo confraternizar con los músicos y por tanto hubo mucha complicidad tanto arriba como abajo del escenario.

Für die Liebhaber des Smooth Jazz war die Auswahl an Künstlern, präsentiert vom Protur Biomar Gran Hotel & Spa*****, nichts weniger als spektakulär.

Fünf der größten Stars des Genres an einem Wochenende zu vereinen, war fast undenkbar.

Die Ausdauer von Jaime Nebot und die Erfahrung von Christian Bössner, ebenfalls verantwortlich für das Festival in Augsburg, machten es schließlich möglich: am Wochenende des 27.-29.

Aprils konnten David Benoit, Marc Antoine, Warren Hill, Jeff Lorber und Eric Darius sowie der mir bisher unbekannte Uné begrüßt werden.

Das Festivalkonzept wird bereits in Augsburg erfolgreich umgesetzt. Eine Gruppe von deutschen Musikern bildete die Band, die alle genannten Solisten zuverlässig und zu jedem Zeitpunkt professionell begleitete: Deterra Lutz (Keyboards & musikalischer Leiter), Martin Feske (Gitarre), Günter Asbeck (Bass), Heiko Braun (Schlagzeug) und Michael Hügel (Tenor-Saxophon).

In der Überschrift dieses Berichts heißt es „ERSTE GROSSE SMOOTH JAZZ-PARTY“ (Jaime Nebot bestätigte schon die Fortsetzung), weil es genau das war. Das Publikum, das im Hotel übernachtete, verbrüderte sich mit den Musikern und alle hatten eine gute Zeit – auf und neben der Bühne.

For lovers of Smooth Jazz, the line-up presented by the Protur Gran Hotel Biomar & Spa***** was nothing less than spectacular. Gathering five of the greatest artists of the genre on one weekend was almost unthinkable. The perseverance of Jaime Nebot together with the experience of Christian Bössner, also head of the festival in Augsburg, made it finally possible: on the weekend of April 27-29, we could see David Benoit, Marc Antoine, Warren Hill, Jeff Lorber and Eric Darius together with, hitherto unknown to me, Uné.

The festival concept is already proven successfully in Augsburg. A group of at all times reliable and professional German musicians formed the band that accompanied the aforementioned great solo artists: Lutz Deterra (Keyboards & musical director), Martin Feske (Guitar), Günter Asbeck (Electric Bass), Heiko Braun (Drums) and Michael Hügel (Tenor Sax).

The headline of this report says „FIRST BIG SMOOTH JAZZ PARTY“ (Jaime Nebot confirmed that it will be continued), because that‘s what it was. The audience that stayed at the hotel could fraternize with the musicians and all together had a great time – on and off the stage.

The annual „Smooth Jazz Festival Augsburg“ 2012 was held for the 5th time, which is an important milestone for the festival. After some less successful editions in Bregenz and Munich, the festival now found its permanent home in Augsburg, Germany, which is a nice town in Bavaria with 265‘000 inhabitants and a historic center of town. Thankfully, festival organizer Christian Bössner never gave up and relentlessly kept up his work to promote and establish this festival, providing smooth jazz artists an opportunity to perform and bring this great art form to European audiences.

This year, smooth jazz fans from all over Europe came to Augsburg in droves to see a great lineup of players, who were backed up by a topnotch band of German session players (Lutz Deterra - keyboards, Günter Asbeck - bass, Martin Feske - guitar and Andy Pilger - drums). The festival was held at the historic Parktheater im Kurhaus Göggingen, which has proven to be the perfect venue for

this event with its nice park, extensive catering area and garden to hang out between concerts.

In addition, the partnering hotel this year was the Hotel Steigenberger Drei Mohren in the heart of town, a freshly renovated historic building providing superior accommodation and easy access to the shopping areas, as well being the perfect starting point for sightseeing tours.

Friday night was opened by John Stoddart, longtime member of Kirk Whalum‘s band who also has a string of solo albums under his belt and is increasingly recognized as a soulful singer and pianist. He did several of his own songs, depicting the ups and downs of relationships, most notably „Angel“ dedicated to his wife, providing lots of soulful singing and occasionally some great piano playing. During his cover of Bill Withers‘ „Lovely Day“, the audience was invited to sing along, while Kirk Whalum guested on sax during one song. His set was well received and

Next was saxophonist Kirk Whalum, who proved to be in a league of his own. His trademark playing is soulful and always from the bottom of his heart, he opened the show with „Big Ol‘ Shoes“ dedicated to his hero, Grover Washington, Jr., later doing an instrumental version of „Autumn Serenade“ from his current CD Romance Language, during this song he was strolling in the audience doing some great improvisations. Having been touring with the late Whitney Houston for 7 years, he did his tribute to the lady with a heartfelt version of „I Will Always Love You“, which was a highlight of the show. His set was a great mixture of originals and covers, running the gamut from slow to jazzy to funky, providing a truly entertaining set.

The evening was closed by saxophonist Eric Darius, who kicked up things a notch with his energetic and enthusiastic playing on the alto sax. He was jumping around on the stage with endless energy, playing „In the Moment“, „Going All Out“ and „Slick“ from his growing catalog (being on the scene for around 10 years by now). He did a welcome tribute to Herbie Hancock with the classic „Butterfly“, Joey Sommerville joined the band for this one, doing some great solos on the trumpet.

Eric did go out into the audience as well, serenading the ladies with his horn playing, spreading joy and fun. His set was the highlight of Friday evening, and the audience was screaming for an encore well past midnight, so everybody on the evening‘s bill joined for the final track, bringing a great evening to a close.

Saturday night was bringing more great music to us. The first set featured trumpet player Joey Sommerville who just found the right groove and mood to kick off the evening in style, having the audience in the palm of his hand, he delivered a great show that - as he made clear at the beginning of the concert - had something new, old, borrowed and blue, which was the right setting for an entertaining show. Joey alternated between trumpet and flugelhorn and also sat behind the keyboards once in a while. Among the tracks played was a great cover of Duke Ellington‘s „Caravan“, „Swag“ (from his current The Get Down Club CD), a nice Doobie Brothers cover of „You Belong To Me“ and, my personal highlight, his own composition „Moonshadows“, which was a slow burning and heartfelt song. He finished his show with an uptempo blues track.

Next was guitar player Nils, who originally hails from Munich, Germany, but now lives in Los Angeles for many years. He performed already at „Smooth Jazz In The Cube“ last year where he was such a crowd pleaser that he was invited again. Nils has a total knack for this cool,

laid-back southern California L.A. groove, which explains why he had three number 1 hits in the past. He kicked off his show with „Georgy Porgy“, later he did his hit „Summer Nights“, his playing on the guitar was pure bliss. To increase the heat, he did „Get On The Dance Floor“ from his brand new release City Groove. As en encore he played Carlos Santana‘s „Europa“, which provided more excellent fret work, bringing a great show to an end.

Japanese keyboard player Keiko Matsui, just having flown in from Tokyo for this event, provided my personal highlight of the whole festival with her outstanding set. She was supported by a local saxophone player (next to the house band) who did a good job, it was a joy to watch this petite lady play the keyboards or - most of the time - the grand piano with her expressive style, she played a selection of songs from her vast catalog, among them „Forever, Forever“ and „The Road…“. She even went into the audience with her keytar, and played a little percussion as a surprise. She did a beautiful solo piano version of „Deep Blue“, before all the players of the evening were re-united for a rousing finale.

This was another great smooth jazz festival, and I applaud Christian Bössner for pulling it all off.

Next will be the Mallorca Smooth Jazz Festival which will take place May 3-5, 2013, before the next Smooth Jazz Festival Augsburg will be held September 13-14, 2013.
