Tim Bowman live at Mallorca Smooth Jazz Festival 2018 on Friday, 27. April, 20:45 h & on Thursday, 26. April, 21:00 h (Allstar show)
He likes romantic music, more bluesy styles, smooth grooves and he has always tried to make music that people could get lost into. Guitarist Tim Bowman has a way of making melding smooth jazz, gospel, soul and blues seem effortless. 11 years old, the Detroit native began playing the guitar at Michigan’s International Gospel Center. At 18, he won a two year scholarship to the College of Creatives Studies where he learned jazz theory. Later, Bowman served as the musical director for gospel luminaries The Winans before embarking on his solo career in 1987. His debut album reached #19 on the Gavin Smooth Jazz chart. In 2004, he experienced a breakthrough with his fourth album, “This Is What I Hear”. His song “Summer Groove” earned him his first #1 record and made him a smooth jazz all-star. By 2007, he secured a spot on the “Guitars and Saxes Tour” alongside Jeff Golub, Gerald Albright and Kirk Whalum. Meanwhile, he has reched #1 on Billboard’s Smooth Jazz chart several times.
En 2004 logró un éxito decisivo con su cuarto álbum „This Is What I Hear“.

Multi-instrumentalist Steven Eugene Grove began playing piano in the second grade and turned to the saxophone at the age of nine. He became interested in jazz at the University of Miami’s School of Music. Upon graduation, he initially remained in Miami doing sessions and playing in bands such as Expose. He then moved to Los Angeles and joined Tower of Power, remaining with the group about four years. Following this experience, he freelanced, doing sessions and working in backup bands, his clients including Joe Cocker, Tina Turner, Eurythmics, The Gap Band, Huey Lewis & the News or Elton John. At the end of the ‘90s, Grove developed the persona of “Euge Groove”. Meanwhile, he has scored close to a dozen #1 hits on the Contemporary Jazz Charts, thrilling fans with danceable grooves, mind-bending hooks, R&B infused melodies and inspired solos. His latest CD, “Groove On” features him not only on saxophone, but on some tracks also on flute and keyboard. Incidentally, Euge met Vocalist Lindsey Webster, who also appears on the new CD, in 2016 on our Smooth Jazz Festival in Augsburg/Germany…

Nick began learning guitar at age nine from his stepfather, and started gigging professionally by 15. With a jazz style that is both urban and contemporary, he has blazed a trail to the top of the ranks of today’s stars. Combining all of the various influences of his music career from jazz to R&B to blues to rock, he has created an unmistakable sound and vibe that is instantly recognizable. With lightening fast speed and a distinctively silky sound, Nick takes the guitar to unexpected places every time he performs. His rich baritone vocals delight audiences unaccustomed to hearing such a skilled instrumentalist singing as well. And his natural comedic showmanship…well, he is one of a kind, and you have to experience a Nick Colionne show for yourself. To do so, there are many occasions – for example the Mallorca Smooth Jazz Festival, but all in all, his tour schedule includes more than 100 live performances per year. At large, Nick released nine albums and hit the Top Ten Billboard Contemporary Jazz charts many times. In 2015 he was also named Billboard´s #5 Artist of the Year.

Incognito
An acid jazz project with deep roots in the 1970s jazz/funk/soul world, Incognito was formed by Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick and Paul “Tubbs” Williams in 1979. Both were the original members of the disco-funk group Light of the World. Throughout the time that they worked on other projects they also met at Bluey’s house to play music, and they decided to take a couple of their home made jams into the studio. So they shifted Light of the World’s lineup slightly and renamed the conglomeration “Incognito”. The first LP was released in 1981, but during the rest of the 1980s Incognito were inactive. Maunick continued to write material for his group, while working with artists such as Maxi Priest, and Tubbs went on to work with George Michael and others, but later moved to the Netherlands. In 1991, Incognito appeared on the scene again with the single “Always There”, which became a Top Ten hit. One year later, Maunick added vocalist Maysa Leak to the lineup. Ever since, the group recorded at a steady rate and stuck to their colorful hybrid sound, while the lineup kept varying.

His music has been shaping the (contemporary) jazz scene for over 50 years – he himself has long since become a legend: Bob James. The pianist and keyboardist was born in Missouri in 1939 and began playing the piano at the age of four. Aged eight, he played his first professional gig for a tap dance class at Mercy Academy. Discovered by Quincy Jones at the Notre Dame Jazz Festival in 1963, Bob recorded his first solo album that year; another 58 CDs and innumerable awards - including two Grammys - would follow. Along the way, he has worked with the Who is Who of the music industry, has made several detours to classical music and has founded, along with Harvey Mason (drums), Lee Ritenour * (guitar) and Nathan East (bass), the quartet Fourplay. Their first album was released in 1991. While Bob is recognized as one of the progenitors of smooth jazz, his music has also had a profound effect on hip hop. His songs “Nautilus” and “Take Me To The Mardi Gras” are among the most sampled in hip hop history (Nautilus 32 times, Take Me To The Mardi Gras 43 times). By the way, besides piano and keyboard, Bob also plays trumpet, timpani and percussion.

He’s one of the shooting stars of the contemporary jazz scene: multi-instrumentalist Vincent Ingala. He got his first drum set at the age of four. In the 3rd grade, he was also given a guitar and after only nine months of lessons, he was strumming Elvis tunes that he had perfected by ear. In 5th grade, he mastered the keyboard before trading it in for the saxophone. He was hooked and the rest is history. Vincent soon played with artists such as Peter White and also joined forces with Marion Meadows and Paul Taylor (“Sax & The City”). His fun-loving stage presence, combined with his passion for playing, elevate the crowd to an exciting frenzy regularly. Only in the mid-20s, the charismatic saxophonist has already won several awards (Billboard Smooth Jazz Artist of the Year in 2012, Sirius XM Watercolors Breakthrough Artist of the Year in 2013) and his music is consistently found atop the most noteworthy music charts in the world.

A native of Buffalo, Cindy Bradley started playing the piano when she was six, but picked the trumpet somehow by accident at fourth grade. By 12, she was performing professionally with a Buffalo area jazz band that consisted of promising musicians, ages 12-17, which emulated the big bands of the 1940s. She played with many jazz groups over the years and did her bachelor’s degree in jazz studies in Ithaca. Then, she went to the New England Conservatory to study for her master’s in jazz trumpet performance. After earning her degrees, Cindy immediately headed to the New York City area and immersed herself in the vibrant jazz scene, discovering equal passions for straight ahead be-bop and contemporary jazz, as well as funk, Top 40, R&B and jazz fusion. Along the way, Cindy, who by the way also plays flugelhorn, performed everywhere, from the Seabreeze Jazz Festival to the Dubai Jazz Fest. In addition, she has already been named Best New Artist (American Smooth Jazz Awards) and Debut Artist of the Year (Catalina Island Jazz Trax Festival).

Not many bands have been successful in contemporary music for such a long time: The UK Pop-, Jazz- and Funkband Shakatak was founded in 1980 by Jill Saward (lead vocs), Bill Sharpe (keys), Keith Winter (guitar), George Anderson (bass) and Roger Odell (drums). After a number of successful top-twenty singles in the UK, the band went on to score unprecedented international success with the release of “Nightbirds”. The title track has now become a standard in the popular music repertoire. This success was repeated with the top-ten hit “Down on the Street”. Along with their recording career, Shakatak had firmly established themselves as a vibrant live act, combining astute musicianship with a sense of fun. Their performance in Japan’s Budoken Hall won them a Silver Award at the Tokyo International Song Festival. The long run of continuous success was brought to a halt when guitarist Keith Winter became seriously ill and was forced to stop playing. Eventually the band re-organised and the remaining four now augment their shows with Jacqui Hicks or Debby Bracknell and Alan Wormald.

UK-Keyboardist Oli Silk began writing and recording music as part of jazz funk duo “Sugar and Silk” in the late 1990’s. Fast forward a decade, and Oli now has five CD’s to his name, including many chart topping radio singles. He remains one of the most dynamic and energetic keyboardists in the genre, and his unique mix of jazzy instrumentals, funky vocal cuts and down right dirty ol’ school keytar and vocoder, give his live shows that real wow factor and have garnered him a loyal and dedicated fan-base. Oli’s skills as a keys player have made him the go-to guy for some of the genre’s biggest artists when they tour Europe – e. g. Gerald Albright, Boney James, Dave Koz, Euge Groove and Peter White. His credentials as a musical director are also far reaching, most notably for four years at the Dubai International Jazz Festival – overseeing some 30+ artists on the Jazz Garden Stage. When off stage, Oli is a sought-after smooth jazz producer, composer and mix engineer. He has also composed music for TV.
Mark Jaimes is a London based session musician with a long and varied career. He started playing guitar at age five and did his first gig age nine. After several record contracts playing in soul bands, he decided to pursue a career as a session musician and became the resident guitarist for David Dundas Music, playing on many high profile jingles for TV and film. He toured with various artists until ’98 when after a recording session with Simply Red, was asked to join the band. Mark toured and recorded with Simply Red for five years until 2003, then embarked on a career as a producer with longtime friend and musician Danny Saxon. He produced hits for various artists including Simply Red and Luciano Pavarotti, and is currently working with legendary songwriter Rod Temperton. Mark is also a regular on the smooth jazz scene, having played with Dave Koz, Brian Culbertson, Peter White, Rick Braun, Richard Elliott, Chuck Loeb, Euge Groove, Mindi Abair and many more.

This was followed by studies of jazz at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Arnhem/NL and he received a scholarship from the Berklee College of Music Boston/ USA. Since 1997, Heiko has been working as a freelance musician and has joined stage with artists such as Jeff Lorber, Eric Darius, David Benoit, Warren Hill and Marc Antoine, as well as Anna Maria Kaufmann, Onita Boone and Worthington Davis. In addition to numerous television appearances where he has worked with e.g. Rod Stewart, Xavier Naidoo, John Miles or Shaggy, he has also appeared in musicals such as La Cage aux Folles and Saturday Night Fever.
Bassist Frank Felix was born in London, UK. He studied Jazz and Light Music at Leeds College of Music and Sandown College of Performing Arts (S.C.O.P.A.). Since then, Lutz Deterra has been playing in several band formations and as a keyboardist in diverse musical world successes, such as Starlight Express, Elizabeth, Miami Nights, Tabaluga and Saturday Night Fever. In 1997, he released his first solo album “Out of my pocket“. In 1999, he became musical director of the California Sunset Records Allstar Band and toured through Europe with stars of the U.S. jazz scene like Nelson Rangell, Nathan East, Rick Braun, Peter White, Eric Marienthal and Gabriela Anders. This was followed by engagements with Marla Glen in the ARD (TV), Jennifer Rush in London and 72 times in the TV show “Have you ever” on VOX. Till this date, Lutz Deterra prefers performing live on stage. In 2011, he released his second CD “Rue Parnasse”.

Smooth Jazz Festival Mallorca 2017:
All Stars on stage Review by Peter Böhi of smoothjazzvibes.com Images by Peter Böhi & Christian Nordström
The show was hosted by keyboardist Brian Simpson. They opened the concert with all players on stage, before the individual players were featured in smaller settings, supported by keyboardist Lutz Deterra, bassist Marius Goldhammer, guitarist Christoph Lindner and drummer Heiko Braun. But the drum seat changed frequently, adding in Marcus Finnie and the legendary Harvey Mason, both playing several nice solos. We got an incredible variety of music, each of the players brought his own style to the table, particularly enjoyable were the young Grace Kelly with her energetic playing, funking up “Amazing Grace”, and saxophonist and flutist Nelson Rangell delivering an awesome rendition of Hampton Hawes’ “Sonora”, whistling and piccolo flute included, with a great solo by Alex Bugnon. Violonist Ken Ford brought the house down with the EWF classic “Can’t Hide Love”, while Alex Bugnon scored with his own classic “107° In The Shade”, recreating a great 70ies jazz-funk feeling. Jeff Kashiwa played some beautiful tenor, while Warren Hill took the Beatles’ classic “Hey Jude” to the next level, with some audience participation. Guitarist Norman Brown delivered “On Broadway” in style, with a nod to George Benson. The show concluded with the funky Hancock classic “Chameleon”, having all

The 6th annual Smooth Jazz Festival Mallorca kicked off with the Smooth Jazz All-Stars, a show that unites most of the players of the festival on one stage. The event usually is held in the unfinished church Església Nova in Son Servera open air, but due to some unexpected cold and rainy weather, it took place at the festival’s main venue, the 5-star Protur Biomar Gran Hotel & Spa, which was fine with me.
players on stage, bringing a great show to a rousing end. This was a great festival start, lots of more great shows ahead! Friday night, keyboardist Brian Simpson was playing, supported by Marcus Finnie (drums), Marius Goldhammer (bass), Christoph Lindner (guitar), Lutz Deterra (keys; hereafter referred to as “festival band A”), plus Rene Junior on sax, a young player from the Czech Republic that contacted Simpson three weeks before the show and was allowed to sit in. The band went through a string of Brian’s hits, among them “Persuasion” and others, with lots of great solos by all involved, especially Rene blended in well with his soulful, smooth tenor sax playing. During the last groovy song people got up to dance, a bunch of girls went onto the stage to dance along Brian, when an enthusiastic male fan joined in and stole the show with his expressive dancing, ending an entertaining set. Next was saxophonist Warren Hill, his band consisted of Heiko Braun (drums), Mark Jaimes (guitar), Orefo Orakwue (bass) and Oli Silk (keys; hereafter referred to as “festival band B”). He kicked off his show with the Beatles classic “Come Together”, followed by a string of his own compositions, especially “Mambo 2000” raised the heat considerably and is

always a joy to listen to, while the “Passion Theme” slowed things down nicely. Another highlight was his cover of Foreigner’s “I Wanna Know What Love Is”, soulfully sung by his daughter Olivia Rox who joined her dad as a surprise guest. After this one, she sung one of her own songs that soon will be released on her first CD. They kept on rocking with Edgar Winter’s “Frankenstein” and Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog”, before they closed the show with the inevitable “Play That Funky Music” having everybody getting off their seats. What a great show this was! Saturday night, saxophonist and flutist Nelson Rangell did his show, supported by festival band B. He opened his show full steam with Stevie Wonder’s “Another Star” playing with unbridled passion and flawless technique, before he did one of his own compositions, kicking things up again with EWF’s “Can’t Hide Love”. Things slowed down with Earl Klugh’s “Vonetta” beautifully played on the flute, and the awesome Hampton Hawes track “Sonora” that was perfectly whistled, plus a nice solo on the piccolo flute. Another highlight was Chick Corea’s “Spain” played on the flute, with a great acoustic solo by Mark Jaimes. Later he played “Turning Night Into Day”, one of his big hits during his stint with GRP Records. They finished the show with the Crusaders classic “Put It Where You Want It”. This was a very fine show by a consummate artist. Next was guitarist Norman Brown, who needs no introduction. He has not only a string of solo albums, but also a few successful collaboration projects with BWB, West Coast Jam and others. With a brand new CD just out, he was ready to play. He joined stage with festival band A, plus Brian Simpson on keyboards. His enthusiastic high energy playing drew the crowd right in. He went through songs like “Better Days Ahead”, “After The Storm”, “For The Love Of You” and more, an especially enjoyable part of

the show was when he paid tribute to his influences, playing some Jimi Hendrix, followed by Wes Montgomery (“Bumpin’ On Sunset”) and George Benson (“This Masquerade”). He played a couple of songs from his new release Let It Go, “It Keeps Coming Back”, a groovy track boasting his typical guitar style, and a solo cover of Michael Jackson’s “Man In The Mirror” that was a nice change of pace. He finished his set with “That’s The Way Love Goes” having people off their seats, an encore was requested and given with Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On”, leaving a satisfied crowd. Sunday morning, saxophonist Grace Kelly appeared with festival band A, plus special guest Brian Simpson on keyboards for a couple of songs. She brought things nicely up to speed with her rendition of the Jackson classic “Billy Jean” and a funked up version of “Summertime”, before she featured her voice to sing songs like “Trying To Figure It Out” from her latest CD and the beautiful, introspective “Touched By An Angel”. She showed her affection with current pop music in the following segment of her show, doing an instrumental cover of Sia’s

“Chandelier”, then singing Coldplay’s “Magic” which was not exactly my cup of tea. Anyway, she more than made up for it with the lively instrumental “Lemon’s Make Lemonade” that had a nice Sadao Watanabe feeling, and the encore, a great version of “Georgia On My Mind”, finishing an entertaining and varied show.
Alex Bugnon
The second show on Sunday morning featured two veterans of the scene, keyboardist Alex Bugnon and drummer Harvey Mason, backed by festival band B, plus special guest Miguel Ramon on saxophone. They started with “Take Five”, followed by “The World Is A Ghetto”, before they funked it up with Herbie Hancock’s “Actual Proof”, perfect material for those veteran players that represent the 70ies jazz-funk period well. A highlight of the show was Bugnon’s heartfelt rendition of “A House Is Not A Home” that pulled all the stops. Another good one was his funkadelic/parliament medley, showing where his musical heart lies. Mason not only provided a rock solid backdrop, he delivered several awesome drum solos exploring the sounds of his instrument in all directions. They funked it up with “Watermelon Man”, done in a decidedly Headhunters style with some funky bass by Orefo Orakwue, finishing their show with Grover Washington Jr.’s “Mr. Magic” featuring the sax of Ramon. They returned for an encore, doing Herbie Hancock’s “Chameleon”, another track where Harvey Mason played on the original recording. This was an outstanding show by two excellent players offering lots of improvisation and interplay.
Ken Ford
Sunday night started with violinist Ken Ford, being supported by festival band B. He kicked off his show with “State Of Mind”, providing some great violin playing and energetic stage presence, moving all across the stage constantly. He did a cool rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “All I Do”, before he got really serious with Kool & The Gang’s “Summer Madness”, pulling all the stops. Another highlight was Ramsey Lewis’ “Sun Goddess”, another musical milestone he did ample justice, with a great solo by Oli Silk in the spirit of the original. A few more songs from his catalog, among them “Butter”, plus a stroll into the audience which led to the conclusion of the show, the inevitable “Moments In Love” which has become his trademark song. This was a high energy show by a great and entertaining player. Closing the night were Acoustic Alchemy, the legendary guitar duo that helped shaping the whole genre. Leader Greg Carmichael along will fellow guitarist Miles Gilderdale were in fine form, the band consisted of Gary Grainger (bass) and Greg Grainger (drums), plus Anthony White (keys). Celebrating 30 years as a band, they went through several of their classic songs like “Mr. Chow” and many others, delivering tons of great solos on acoustic and electric guitars, propelled by a top-notch band. two songs, saxophonist Jeff Kashiwa joined the band. Their catalog stood the test of time well and it was a joy to witness those musicians playing their songs with aplomb and finesse. Saxophonist Jeff Kashiwa opened the early set on Monday morning, supported by festival band A. He kicked off his show with the funky “Let It Ride”, later showing his sensual side with “Quiet Goodbye” on the alto sax, one of the highlights was “The Asian Persuasion” played on the flute, with a middle part employing the EWI (electronic wind instrument). He later introduced the EWI further, before he played “Around The World” on it. He raised the heat with “Three Day Weekend” and the funky “Hot Tin Roof” playing some mean tenor sax, winding up this great show. He came back for an encore, doing his biggest hit “Hyde Park (The ‘Ah, Oooh’ Song)” inviting Grace Kelly who happened to be in the audience onto the stage to join him for some awesome scatting, finishing a perfect show. The second show on Monday morning was done by the German group Nighthawks led by bassist Dal Martino. Co-leader Reiner Winterschladen was replaced by Ryan Camiaux, a capable trumpet player from New York. The rest of the band consisted of regular members Jürgen Dahmen (keys), Thomas Alkier (drums) and Jörg Lehnhardt (guitar). They went through several of their sweeping songs, with lots of nice solos, especially by guitarist Lehnhardt. Their unique brand of music is totally captivating and was well received by the crowd. This show marked the end of the festival for me, I had to leave in the afternoon to catch my flight and be back home in time for work the next day. Unfortunately, I had to do without the evening shows of rising smooth jazz star guitarist Adam Hawley and veteran band Spyro Gyra who were touring Europe at that time. Nevertheless, this year provided numerous memorable musical moments by many of the finest artists in the genre, this festival is getting better each year. Add the hospitality of the hotel, the unrestricted and friendly atmosphere of the event, the many music friends from all over the world, and you get one of the best smooth jazz festivals you can find anywhere.

Hans-Bernd Hülsmann presents:
Smooth Music all around ... wonderful jazz, introspective vocals, lifestyle soundtracks for us all to incorporate into our days, nights and weekends. Here is a list of my personal favorites so far this year! Reviews by Hans-Bernd Hülsmann of Smooth & Soul - Your guide to the world of smooth jazz (smooth-jazz.de)
ALTHEA RENÉ – Unstoppable Detroit, Michigan born flutist Althea René had to decide if she should stay as a Wayne County Deputy Sheriff or as a full-time performing/recording artist. Fortunately, she let her heart lead the way toward music as her ultimate passion. She started her solo career with the debut album “Flute Talk” in 2000. Soon the albums “Chocolate Rush” (2003), “In The Moment” (2006), “No Restrictions” (2008), “In The Flow” (2013) and “Live In Detroit” (2015) followed. With “Unstoppable” (2017) Althea sends a clear sign of continuity and confidence in her musical future. The album lifts off with the title song. A pure stroke of musical genius accentuated with a syncopated punch of flute flavor and a special extra by Lin Rountree on trumpet. With a lively and pearly tone Althea recommends herself on “Gypsy Soul”, a collaboration with Lew Laing, a God-sent gifted keyboardist of world-class level. Althea René’s album “Unstoppable” is a blistering sign for the sparkling vitality of smooth jazz. The next generation has already reached a high level of professionalism.
CINDY BRADLEY – Natural Flugelhorn and trumpet really rock her boat. Cindy Bradley left some imposing traces in the sand of the smooth jazz genre with “Just A Little Bit” (2007), “Bloom” (2009), “Unscripted” (2011) and “Bliss” (2014). “Natural” (2017) is her fourth album in connection with the label Trippin’ n’ Rhythm. The set opens with “Girl Talk”, a funky exchange of blows between Cindy on trumpet and Paula Atherton on sax. Sax veteran Paula had invited Cindy on her fourth album “Ear Candy” (2015) and the opening track is according to the principle of mutuality a great thank-you with positive effect. On “Category A” Cindy works together with outstanding guitarist Chris Standring, who has a superb knack for the perfect sonic twist. Music lovers will recognize parallels to groundbreaking pieces of pop history. Beauty, elegance, and a quiet grace infuses distinct artistic individuality into melodies. “Natural” is one of those rare works of art having body, soul, and spirit.
CHRIS STANDRING – Sunlight Guitarist Chris Standring has already received a variety of positive reviews. All critics agree that his music is innovative, captivating and always reinventing itself. His high recognition value is confirmed by the high attendance of his notable concerts. His newest album, “Sunlight”, is exactly on this success line. The first tune “Static in the Attic” awakes the memory of magic Acid Jazz. This blend of jazz riffs with acid sounds reminds of the late guitarist Ronny Jordan who spearheaded the Acid Jazz movement in the early 1990s. “Aphrodisiac” is a libido increasing substance. Standring proves that even music can have an intoxicating effect. Chris Standring and Bob James have known each other from different live performances. “Revisit” is the first time they have recorded a song together. They generate on this song a feeling of togetherness, a feeling of unity, that becomes a vital current of identity. With “Sunlight” guitarist Chris Standring gives a master class on what jazz guitar is all about. This versatile guitarist has developed a brilliant style across the jazz spectrum of acid jazz, smooth and fusion jazz.
EUGE GROOVE – groove on They belong to the elite circle of best entertainers in the field of smooth jazz. At larger festivals, they are among the first cast. Saxophonist Euge Groove is one of these acts on top of the game. On his new album “Groove On” Euge performs soprano and tenor saxophone, Wurlitzer piano, Fender Rhodes and Hammond B3. The term sonnet is derived from the Italian word “sonetto”. On “Sonnet Xl” Euge performs a soprano sax with dreamlike security although it’s tricky to ensure a perfect intonation. The pitch conveys the impression of smallness, which explains the title. “Groove On” is like chiseled out of a monolith. Compact, in constant flow and accented by strings. “Saturday Afternoon” has great moments especially the dialogue between Euge on sax and Tracy Carter on Fender Rhodes. What is the difference between food and Euge’s music? While food has an expiration date “Groove On” stays always cool and refreshing allowing new perspectives to seep into good old smooth jazz.
