Chill-out lounges on each floor produce a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere all weekend. Der in Deutschland geborene Gitarrist und Komponist Nils lebt seit Mitte der 80er Jahre in Südkalifornien. Er besuchte das Musiker-Institut in Hollywood und begann danach als Toningenieur in einem Aufnahmestudio. Dort lernte er alle technischen Tricks in einem Tonstudio, welche er direkt in die Aufnahme seines ersten Albums “Blue Planet” einfließen ließ, das 1998 erschien und großen Anklang fand. Nach einigen Kompositionen für Film und Fernsehen arbeitete Nils unter anderem mit George Benson, Paul Brown, The Temptations, Rick Braun, Gabriella Anders, Gerald McCauley, Paul Jackson Jr. und Gerald Albright zusammen. Im Jahr 2005 kehrte er mit dem Album “Pacific Coast Highway” zu seiner einzigartigen Solo-Karriere zurück. Die gleichnamige Hit-Single war für mehr als sieben Wochen auf Platz 1 der Radio- und Verkaufs-Charts und wurde später zum meistgespielten Smooth Jazz-Song des Jahrzehnts (2001-2010) im US-Radio. Nils´ 2007 veröffentlichtes Album “Ready To Play” knüpfte an den Erfolg von PCH an und seine CD “Up Close And Personal” (2009) brachte drei erfolgreiche Hit-Singles hervor, die zu der Nominierung für die Auszeichnung “Best Guitarist of the Year” bei den American Smooth Jazz Awards führte. Die Single “Jump Start” aus seinem neuen Album “What The Funk?” (2010) stand bis Ende April 2011 acht Wochen am Stück auf #1 und schreibt die Chart-Erfolge fort. German born guitarist and composer Nils resides since the mid-80‘s in southern California. Der talentierte Komponist, Arrangeur, Keyboarder und Posaunist Culbertson begann seine musikalische Ausbildung im Alter von acht mit Klavierunterricht, mit neun wechselte er zum Schlagzeug, mit zehn zur Posaune und mit 12 zum Bass. Lil‘ Man Soul Joyner wurde in Norfolk, VA geboren. Er spielte Schlagzeug im Kirchenchor und wechselte in der Highschool zum Saxophon. Er gewann drei NAACP Youth Achievement Awards für zeitgenössische Instrumentalmusik, Komposition und klassische Musik. Nach der High School wurde Jackiem Leiter der Musikabteilung in der Kirche von Norfolk. Born in Norfolk, VA, Joyner came through the church choir where he also played drums before taking up the saxophone in high school. He won three NAACP youth achievement awards for contemporary instrumental, composition and classical music. After high school Joyner was employed by the church as head of the music department in Norfolk. Along with Keiko Matsui, in recent years Joyner has performed onstage with Marcus Johnson, Bobby Lyle, Angela Bofill, Ronnie Laws, Jean Carne, Peter White, Gerald Albright, Joe Sample and the late Wayman Tisdale. “Babysoul”, Joyner’s first album, debuted at #15 on the Billboard chart in 2007. His sophomore release, “Lil’ Man Soul”, spawned two #1 singles. Topping the smooth jazz radio charts for an incredible 12 weeks, “I’m Waiting For You” was the longest-running #1 single in 2009. “Dance With Me”, single of his latest album “Jackiem Joyner” (2010), already climbed to #3 on Billboard Jazz Songs chart.

Mit seinen insgesamt sechs veröffentlichten Alben war er vielfach in den Top Ten Billboard Contemporary Jazz Charts vertreten. Sein letztes Album “No Limits” erschien 2008. Sein Tourplan umfasst über 100 Live-Auftritte pro Jahr.

Oliver (USA)hatte seinen ersten großen Durchbruch in Florida bei dem Label TK Records als Percussionist. So wurde er zu einem der ursprünglichen Mitglieder von “KC and the Sunshine Band” und wirkte u. a. bei den ersten #1 Hits der Band in den Charts “Get Down Tonight” und “That’s The Way I Like It” mit. Er tourte u. a. mit Jermaine Jackson, Al Jarreau, Natalie Cole, The Beach Boys und Nils. Er ist das dritte Mitglied des Trios, „Gravity 180“, an der Seite von Clydene Jackson und Harold Payne.

Oliver‘s (USA) first big break came in Florida with TK Records as their in house percussionist. This led him to become one of the original members of „KC and The Sunshine Band“ when they recorded the album featuring, “Get Down Tonight” and “That’s The Way I Like It”, their first number one hits on the Billboard charts. Rocco (Italy) is getting good reputation in smooth jazz music business. He recorded, arranged and produced the CD “Tribute To Grover Washington, Jr.” (2005) in memory of the great saxophone player. The song “Winelight” made Rocco a household name on Smooth Jazz radio stations across the internet and was selected one of “The Best Of 2005� by Sky.fm. His album “Give Me The Groove” (2007) became pre-nominated at the Grammy Awards 2007 for Contemporary Jazz Best Album.

Besides several engagements in German television the musicians played in diverse musical world successes, such as Starlight Express, Jesus Christ Superstar and Saturday Night Fever.

MARCUS MILLER – A Night In Monte-Carlo Monte Carlo, die glitzernde Metropole des Fürstentums Monaco, ist das Zentrum der Eleganz, des Reichtums und der Lebensart. Keiko Matsui (Tokyo) hat ihr Leben ihrem Lieblingsinstrument gewidmet, dem Klavier. Seit ihrem 5. Lebensjahr übt und spielt sie darauf. Oft klassifiziert als Smooth Jazzoder New Age-Musikerin streckt sie ihre musikalischen Fühler auch in andere Genres aus. Die Verbindung von westlichen und östlichen Elementen ist ihr Markenzeichen, das sich auf einer Vielzahl von Soloalben findet. Im Januar wurde ihr neues Album „The Road...“ veröffentlicht, eine musikalische Verkörperung ihrer Persönlichkeit, die eine Vielzahl von Facetten aufzeigt. Wenig Glamour, aber viel vibrierende Intimität.

Tokyo born Keiko Matsui devotes her life to her favorite instrument, the piano. Since her fifth birthday she loves this piece of equipment. Classified as New Age or Smooth Jazz musician, she always expands her work to other genres. Blending Eastern and Western influences she has found her own style presented in numerous solo albums. Her newest album „The Road...“ was released in January, 2011 and is a musical symbolization of her personality exploiting a number of facets. Less spectacular glamour but a huge portion of vibrant intimacy.

In ihrer hochmusikalischen Art gibt sie Popsongs einen neuen Charakter, Intensität und Ausdrucksform.

The Rippingtons is one of the groups that have obtained in the range of Smooth Jazz world-wide reputation. Led by Russ Freeman they are a constant factor in the scene for many years. Also this year they present a new album, named “Côte D‘Azur”. This region of the same name in southern France inspired Freeman’s songwriting. The album offers the best style of the Rippingtons plus some European-influenced chill-out that refreshes the music in a pleasant way. Thereto the new bassist of the group Rico Belled has also contributed in particular.

This year‘s Smooth Jazz Festival 2010 in Germany took place in Augsburg in the Parktheater at Kurhaus Göggingen, a historic bulding from the 19th century that has been rebuilt after a fire and now serves as theater and concert hall. It turned out to be an ideal setting for this event, holding up to 700 people, a third of them in the seating area. There were bars and catering areas, so we were taken care of very well. The event was attended well, I was pleased to see a capacity crowd and many familiar faces from previous years. Friday night the festival was kicked off by David Benoit who did some songs from his current „Earthglow“ release, next to several of his classic songs ranging from „Freedom At Midnight“ to „Blue Rondo A La Turk“,

supported by The Heavy Mellow Quartet from Berlin, who backed all the major acts on Friday and Saturday. Later during Benoit‘s show, special guest Rick Braun played one song, kicking up things a notch. David Benoit was in a great playing mood and provided an excellent performance. Rick Braun did the late show and turned up the heat considerably, he was joined by Shilts, and the two worked the crowd. David Benoit joined in for one song, returning Rick‘s earlier favor. Rick Braun did many of his hits, ranging from „Use Me“ to „Grazing In The Grass“, as another highlight, Chuck Loeb, who just had arrived, joined the party, bringing this first evening to a rousing end.

Saturday, the sax and guitar duo Akusticos opened the evening with some unplugged smooth jazz, before Shilts performed his own show. He did several of his familiar songs (like „Good Evans“ and „Look What‘s Happened“ and Stevie‘s „Tuesday Heartbreak“) before featuring a track from his brand new CD „Going Underground“. At the end of his show, Rick Braun joined him turning up the heat. This was another great show by a consummate sax player.

Next was guitarist extraordinaire Chuck Loeb doing a great show, just backed by the Heavy Mellow Quartet, he gave us some great renditions of tracks like „The Music Inside“ and other gems from his vast catalog. The crowd just loved it. At the end of his show, Rick Braun and Shilts played a couple of tracks with him (like „Brother Ray“ and a blues) jamming along, in the spirit of jazz expressing spontaneity and cameraderie. This brought the evening to a satisfying close. Sunday morning, while some rays of sunshine were entering the building, Joyce Cooling with Jay Wagner and their own drummer, performing in Germany for the first time, capitivated the crowd with her blend of jazz and latin grooves, most notable were the percussion interludes that provided a nice change to the instrumental parts of the concert. She performed her own „Revolving Door“ sitting at the edge of the stage, providing a moving part of the concert. Her show was warmly received and she was visibly moved by the response of the crowd, she did two encores. This festival turned out to be a success, and even more than last year, I am sure that it is destined to be continued successfully in the future. Next year‘s festival will be held in Augsburg at the same location, so the uncertainty has come to an end and I look forward to be back again.
