The Fourth King Jeff Golub wurde am 15� April 1955 in Akron, USA geboren� In seiner Jugend hörte er R&B, Funk, Blues, Jazz, Pop und Rock und begann noch vor seiner Pubertät mit dem Gitarrespielen� In den 70er Jahren zog Golub von Akron nach Boston und besuchte das renommierte Berklee College of Music� 1980 verschlug es ihn schließlich nach New York City, wo er heute noch wohnt� Golubs musikalischer Hintergrund ist reich an Vielfalt: es war in den frühen 80er Jahren, als ihn der Rock-/Hardrock-Star Billy Squier für sieben LP’s und drei Welttourneen engagierte und Golub wurde dadurch zum gefragten Session-Musiker� Die Liste von Rock- und R&B-Künstlern, die Golub in den 80ern und 90ern (im Studio oder auf der Bühne) begleitete, umfasst so bedeutende Namen wie Tina Turner, John Waite, Vanessa Williams, Ashford & Simpson, Dar Williams und den ehemaligen J� Geils Band Sänger Peter Wolf� 1988 wurde Golub dann von Rod Stewart angeheuert – die Zusammenarbeit hielt sieben Jahre, vier Alben und fünf Welttourneen� 1988 war auch das Jahr in dem Golub mit “Unspoken Words” sein erstes Album als Bandleader veröffentlichte, obwohl er zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch überwiegend andere Künstler begleitete� Erst mit der Gründung der Band Avenue Blue im Jahr 1994 veränderte sich Golub’s Haupttätigkeit� Im gleichen Jahr kam das gleichnamige Debüt-Album “Avenue Blue” auf den Smooth Jazz-Markt – mit großem Erfolg� Zwei weitere Projekte ließen nicht lange auf sich warten und wurden 1996 (“Naked City”) und 1997 (“Nightlife”) veröffentlicht�

Golub’s musical background is rich and diverse. It was in the early ’80s that Golub was hired to back arena rock/hard rock star Billy Squier, (7 LP’s and three world tours) and that association led to a lot of other session work. The list of major rock or R&B artists Golub backed in the ’80s or ’90s (either in the studio or on-stage) includes Tina Turner, John Waite, Vanessa Williams, Ashford & Simpson, Dar Williams, and former J. Geils Band vocalist Peter Wolf. In 1988, Golub was hired to back Rod Stewart, an association that lasted for seven years, four albums and five would tours. 1988 was also the year in which Golub’s first album as a leader, “Unspoken Words”, was released, but at that point, he was still devoting most of his time to backing other artists. It wasn’t until 1994, when Golub founded the band Avenue Blue, that playing as a leader became the guitarist’s main activity. That year Avenue Blue’s self-titled debut album fared well in the smooth jazz/NAC market. Two more Avenue Blue projects were released – “Naked City” in 1996 and “Nightlife” in 1997. Starting with 1999‘s album “Out of the Blue”, Jeff Golub presented himself again as a solo artist – followed by another seven solo albums. The year 2011 has been a roller coaster ride for Golub: in June, he became blind due to collapse of the optic nerve, later the year he released “Three Kings”, a tribute work to the music of Albert, B.B. and Freddie King. His latest album “Train Keeps A Rolling” will be available on August 13, 2013.

Golub was born on April 15, 1955, in Akron, OH, where he grew up listening to a variety of R&B, funk, blues, jazz, pop, and rock and began playing the guitar as a pre-adolescent. In the ’70s, Golub moved away from Akron to attend to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 1980, he moved to New York City, where he is still residing.

Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, Warren Hill began his musical journey on the guitar and vocals at the age of 7. On a Summer Music Camp, he finally came into contact with jazz and the saxophone. Back in Toronto, he formed a fusion band, playing Weather Report, Pat Metheny, Spyro Gyra, Grover Washington Jr. and David Sanborn. The debut CD “Kiss Under the Moon” (1991) quickly caught the attention of the industry and Natalie Cole, who was looking for an opening act for her “Unforgettable” tour. Suddenly Warren found himself performing in front of 250,000 people in 2 months. Since then, Warren has released 11 solo CD’s which have reached combined worldwide sales of over 1 million copies. With ’97s “Shelter”, Hill began featuring his vocals as well as his instrumental skills. In 2002 Warren created the concept for the world’s first Smooth Jazz Cruise. His latest album release is “La Dolce Vita” (2008).

Steve Cole is one of the most celebrated players in contemporary jazz, having sold hundreds of thousands of albums worldwide and scored four #1 R&R Smooth Jazz hits. He attended Northwestern University, where he explored modern classical music for the saxophone under the tutelage of internationally recognized educator Fred Hemke. He released his debut disc, “Stay Awhile”, in 1998; it yielded the hits “Where the Night Begins,” “When I Think of You” and “Say It Again” and earned Cole a Prism Award for Best New Artist at the 2000 Oasis Smooth Jazz Awards. Steve has toured and/or recorded with Boz Scaggs, Larry Carlton, Jeff Lorber, Brian Culbertson, Freddie Cole, Cyrus Chestnut, KMFDM, Rick Braun, Dave Koz, Peter White, Marc Antoine and is a founding member, along with Jeff Kashiwa and Kim Waters, of The Sax Pack. Steve has six CDs in his catalog and has just finished his 7th solo album. This project will be released in late August 2013, and goes back to his Funk, R&B, Blues, and Jazz roots.

Seattle native, Jeff Kashiwa knew he was destined to be a musician following his junior high introduction to woodwinds. His instincts were correct. He became known as one of the most compelling young saxophonists in contemporary jazz during his first year with The Rippingtons. Kashiwa performed hundreds of shows all over the world and appeared on many of the band’s classic recordings. Having established himself in the ‘90s as one of the most diverse saxmen in contemporary jazz during his decade long tenure with The Rippingtons, Kashiwa’s instincts led him to more dynamic endeavors through his solo career. It surprised many when Jeff left the group to venture out on his own, but he had things to say through his own music. Kashiwa now has nine CDs released under his own name and has continued to record as a guest artist with many other artists as well. In 2004, Kashiwa founded The Sax Pack, a trio of saxophone headliners, featuring himself, Steve Cole and Kim Waters. The group released two CDs together and charmed audiences with their Rat Pack style reparte’ in tours across the U.S. and abroad. In 2006, Jeff reunited with The Rippingtons for their 20th Anniversary Tour and continues to record and tour with the group as often as his busy schedule will allow. In addition to touring with The Sax Pack and his own group, Kashiwa has expanded his career to include the realm of music education, teaching various courses through the music program at Shoreline Community College in Seattle. Geboren in Buffalo, New York, begann Cindy Bradley im Alter von sechs Jahren Klavier zu spielen� In der vierten Klasse kam sie durch Zufall mit der Trompete in Berührung, was sich als lebens- und karrieredefinierender Glücksgriff herausstellte� Mit 12 Jahren trat sie in Buffalo und Umgebung mit einer professionellen Jazz-Band auf, bestehend aus vielversprechenden Musikern im Alter von 12-17, die Big-Bands aus den 1940ern nachahmte� In den folgenden Jahren spielte sie in vielen Jazz-Gruppen, aber es war mit diese Gruppe, mit der sie ihre Liebe zum Jazz und speziell zur Trompete entdeckte� Nach ihrem Bachelor-Abschluss in Jazz besuchte sie das New England Conservatory und machte ihren Master-Abschluss in Jazz-Trompete� Im Anschluss zog Cindy nach New York City und wurde schnell Teil der dortigen Jazz-Szene – sie entdeckte ihre Leidenschaft für Straight Ahead Be-Bop und Contemporary Jazz, genauso wie für Funk, Top40, R&B und Jazz-Fusion� Die Bands, denen sie angehörte, spielten sowohl ClubGigs als auch auf hochkarätigen Veranstaltungen wie den Emmy Awards und sogar dem Super Bowl�

Der Name für das 2009 erschienene Album “Bloom” (Blüte) erwies sich als äußerst passend, verglichen mit der damaligen Entwicklung des charismatischen Multitalents: so entwickelte sie eine mächtige Präsenz im Radio und dem Contemporary Jazz-Festival-Zirkus mit Auftritten vom River Raisin’ Jazz Festival in Monroe, Michigan, bis zum Dubai Jazz Fest� Sie gewann die Auszeichnung Best New Artist bei den American Smooth Jazz Awards und wurde Debut Artist of the Year auf dem Catalina Island Jazz Trax Festival und im Smooth Jazz News-Magazin� Mit der Veröffentlichung von “Unscripted” (2011), ihrer bislang letzten CD, beweist Cindy Bradley nicht nur, dass Trompete und Flügelhorn nach wie vor hip sind, sie groovt das Instrument auch wie ihre einstigen Helden Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan und Blue Mitchell� Die erste Singleauskopplung “Massive Transit” stand 2012 sechs Wochen auf Nr�1 in den BillboardSingle-Charts, gefolgt von “Deja Blue” auf Nr�2 und “Lifted” auf Nr�5� A native of Buffalo, New York, Cindy Bradley started playing the piano when she was six. At fourth grade she picked the trumpet by accident, which turned out to be a life and career defining fluke. By 12, she was performing professionally with a Buffalo area jazz band that consisted of promising musicians, ages 12-17, which emulated the big bands of the 1940s. She played with many jazz groups over the years, but it was with this group that she fell in love with performance, jazz, and especially the trumpet. After a bachelor’s degree in jazz studies, she went to the New England Conservatory to study for her master’s in jazz trumpet performance. After earning her degrees, Cindy immediately headed to the New York City area and immersed herself in the vibrant jazz scene, discovering equal passions for straight ahead be-bop and contemporary jazz, as well as funk, Top 40, R&B and jazz fusion. The bands she was involved with played clubs as well as high profile events like the Emmy Awards and even the Super Bowl.

Die Festivalband MARTIN FESKE Gitarre Der in Köln und Texas ausgebildete Gitarrist Martin Feske hat im Laufe seiner Karriere mit unzähligen namhaften Musikern zusammengearbeitet, unter ihnen so unterschiedliche Musiker wie Till Brönner, Jeff Lorber, Lew Soloff, Peter Fessler oder Peter Kraus, Bill Ramsey, Andru Donalds und Sasha� Seine Konzerttätigkeit führte ihn u� a� zu den Berliner und Leverkusener Jazztagen, aber auch ins europäische Ausland� Zudem arbeitet er als Fachbereichsleiter der Abteilung Jazz/Pop und Gitarre an der Musikschule Bocholt und ist Dozent für Jazz/ Pop-Gitarre an der Musikhochschule Münster�

Andy ist ein professioneller Schlagzeuger und Percussionist aus Köln� Seine musikalische Laufbahn begann er mit vier Jahren am Klavier, mit neun wechselte er zum Schlagzeug� Er genoss eine klassische Ausbildung an der Musikschule Duisburg und gewann den Bundeswettbewerb „Jugend musiziert”� Als Teenager nahm er Schlagzeugunterricht mit den Big Band-Schlagzeugern Ronnie Stephenson (Paul Kuhn) und Sperie Karas (WDR) und gewann den Bundeswettbewerb „Jugend jazzt”� Nach seiner Ausbildung studierte Andy Klassik und Jazz in Köln� Zu dieser Zeit arbeitete er bereits als professioneller Musiker in verschiedenen Bands� In der Musical-Szene ist Andy als „Inventar” bekannt – er spielte für große Produktionen wie Starlight Express, Jesus Christ Superstar, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Westside Story, Evita etc� Neben gemeinsamen Projekten mit Catarina Valente, Bill Ramsey, Howard Carpendale, Jennifer Rush, Joy Fleming, Shirley Bassey und Götz Alsmann tourte er durch Europa mit Erik Marienthal, Slim Man, Anthony Weedon, Vonda Shepard, Gabriela Anders, Rick Braun und Janita� 2011 spielte er auf dem North Sea Jazz Festival mit Herbie Hancock und Lang Lang�

Das Kurhaus Augsburg-Göggingen gibt es seit 1886. Erbaut in der Gründerzeit von dem Architekten Jean Keller, brannte es 1972 aus. 1996 wurde es – original rekonstruiert – neu eröffnet.

Das von dem Augsburger Keller für die Hessing’schen Kuranstalten errichtete Theater gilt als in Europa einzigartiges Zeugnis der Architekturgeschichte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Viele vergleichbare Konstruktionen – angefangen vom Münchener Glaspalast bis hin zu den für die Weltausstellungen entstandenen Bauten der Zeit – sind verschwunden. Auch das Kurhaustheater war einst „verschwunden”. Es wurde erst 1972 wiederentdeckt, als es, damals von einer Baufirma als Lager genutzt, aus bis heute ungeklärter Ursache in Flammen aufging. Durch den Brand wurden später eingebaute Holzteile und Verkleidungen vernichtet. Zum Vorschein kam eine zweigeschossige Halle mit gußeisernen Säulen und Umgängen, mit ornamentalen Brüstungsgittern, mit von der Hitze ausgeglühten Eisensprossenfenstern und geborstenen farbigen Glasfenstern. Das Feuer hatte den Zuschauerraum des Kurhaustheaters (ca. 370 bewegliche Sitzplätze) mit seiner historischen Gusseisenkonstruktion freigelegt. Neu renoviert feierte das Parktheater Göggingen im Jahr 1996 seine Wiedereröffnung. 110 Jahre vorher, 1886, war es konzipiert worden als Theater, Gesellschaftshaus und Palmenhaus. Und so wird es heute wieder genutzt. 200 Kulturveranstaltungen finden pro Jahr statt. Darüber hinaus werden die unterschiedlich großen Räumlichkeiten des Kurhauses Göggingen an Pivatleute und Firmen vermietet.

Parktheater im Kurhaus Göggingen The Kurhaus Theater in Augsburg-Göggingen was erected in 1886. Built in the period of industrial expansion in Germany (late 1800s) by the Augsburg architect Jean Keller, it was destroyed by fire in 1972. After having been faithfully restored, it was reopened in 1996.

Architekturgeschichte des 19. Jahrhunderts

This splendid theater was built to supplement the orthopaedic Hessing Sanatorium. It is considered as a unique European testimonial of 19-century architecture. Many similar buildings – from the Munich Glass Palace to the constructions specially built for the World Exhibitions of that time – have disappeared. The Kurhaus Theater once had also “disappeared”. It was rediscovered in 1972 when a former cinema that at the time was used by a construction company as an off-the-road storage facility, went up in flames for reasons still unknown. The fire destroyed wooden parts and coverings that were added over time. A double-storey hall came to the surface displaying cast-iron pillars and corridors together with ornamental balustrades, burnt-out iron muntin windows and burst stained-glass windows. The fire exposed the auditorium of the Kurhaus Theater (approx. 370 movable seats) with its historic cast-iron construction. Following an extensive renovation period, the Park Theater in Göggingen celebrated its reopening in 1996. 110 years earlier, in 1886, the Park Theater was designed as a theatre and community centre with an integrated palm house. Today, it is once again used as such hosting 200 cultural events per year. In addition, the various-sized premises are rented to both private individuals and companies.

Smooth Jazz Festival Augsburg 2012

5 Years Of Smooth Jazz In Europe Review by Peter Böhi of smoothjazzvibes.com

The annual „Smooth Jazz Festival Augsburg“ 2012 was held for the 5th time, which is an important milestone for the festival. After some less successful editions in Bregenz and Munich, the festival now found its permanent home in Augsburg, Germany, which is a nice town in Bavaria with 265‘000 inhabitants and a historic center of town. Thankfully, festival organizer Christian Bössner never gave up and relentlessly kept up his work to promote and establish this festival, providing smooth jazz artists an opportunity to perform and bring this great art form to European audiences. This year, smooth jazz fans from all over Europe came to Augsburg in droves to see a great lineup of players, who were backed up by a topnotch band of German session players (Lutz Deterra - keyboards, Günter Asbeck - bass, Martin Feske - guitar and Andy Pilger - drums). The festival was held at the historic Parktheater im Kurhaus Göggingen, which has proven to be the perfect venue for

this event with its nice park, extensive catering area and garden to hang out between concerts. In addition, the partnering hotel this year was the Hotel Steigenberger Drei Mohren in the heart of town, a freshly renovated historic building providing superior accommodation and easy access to the shopping areas, as well being the perfect starting point for sightseeing tours. Friday night was opened by John Stoddart, longtime member of Kirk Whalum‘s band who also has a string of solo albums under his belt and is increasingly recognized as a soulful singer and pianist. He did several of his own songs, depicting the ups and downs of relationships, most notably „Angel“ dedicated to his wife, providing lots of soulful singing and occasionally some great piano playing. During his cover of Bill Withers‘ „Lovely Day“, the audience was invited to sing along, while Kirk Whalum guested on sax during one song. His set was well received and

His trademark playing is soulful and always from the bottom of his heart, he opened the show with „Big Ol‘ Shoes“ dedicated to his hero, Grover Washington, Jr., later doing an instrumental version of „Autumn Serenade“ from his current CD Romance Language, during this song he was strolling in the audience doing some great improvisations. Having been touring with the late Whitney Houston for 7 years, he did his tribute to the lady with a heartfelt version of „I Will Always Love You“, which was a highlight of the show. His set was a great mixture of originals and covers, running the gamut from slow to jazzy to funky, providing a truly entertaining set. The evening was closed by saxophonist Eric Darius, who kicked up things a notch with his energetic and enthusiastic playing on the alto sax. He was jumping around on the stage with endless energy, playing „In the Moment“, „Going All Out“ and „Slick“ from his growing catalog (being on the scene for around 10 years by now). He did a welcome tribute to Herbie Hancock with the classic „Butterfly“, Joey Sommerville joined the band for this one, doing some great solos on the trumpet. Eric did go out into the audience as well, serenading the ladies with his horn playing, spreading joy and fun. His set was the highlight of Friday evening, and the audience was screaming for an encore well past midnight, so everybody on the evening‘s bill joined for the final track, bringing a great evening to a close. Saturday night was bringing more great music to us. The first set featured trumpet player Joey Sommerville who just found the right groove and mood to kick off the evening in style, having the audience in the palm of his hand, he delivered a great show that - as he made clear at the beginning of the concert - had something new, old, borrowed and blue, which was the right setting for an entertaining show. Joey alternated between trumpet and flugelhorn and also sat behind the keyboards once in a while. Among the tracks played was a great cover of Duke Ellington‘s „Caravan“, „Swag“ (from his current The Get Down Club CD), a nice Doobie Brothers cover of „You Belong To Me“ and, my personal highlight, his own composition „Moonshadows“, which was a slow burning and heartfelt song. He finished his show with an uptempo blues track. Next was guitar player Nils, who originally hails from Munich, Germany, but now has been living in Los Angeles for many years. He performed already at „Smooth Jazz In The Cube“ last year where he was such a crowd pleaser that he was invited again. Nils has a total knack for

this cool, laid-back southern California L.A. groove, which explains why he had three number 1 hits in the past. He kicked off his show with „Georgy Porgy“, later he did his hit „Summer Nights“, his playing on the guitar was pure bliss. To increase the heat, he did „Get On The Dance Floor“ from his brand new release City Groove. As en encore he played Carlos Santana‘s „Europa“, which provided more excellent fret work, bringing a great show to an end. Japanese keyboard player Keiko Matsui, just having flown in from Tokyo for this event, provided my personal highlight of the whole festival with her outstanding set. She was supported by a local saxophone player (next to the house band) who did a good job, it was a joy to watch this petite lady play the keyboards or - most of the time - the grand piano with her expressive style, she played a selection of songs from her vast catalog, among them „Forever, Forever“ and „The Road…“. She even went into the audience with her keytar, and played a little percussion as a surprise. She did a beautiful solo piano version of „Deep Blue“, before all the players of the evening were re-united for a rousing finale. This was another great smooth jazz festival, and I applaud Christian Bössner for pulling it all off. Next will be the Mallorca Smooth Jazz Festival which will take place May 3-5, 2013, before the next Smooth Jazz Festival Augsburg will be held September 13-14, 2013.

... on the Mallorca Smooth Jazz Festival – the only smooth jazz festival in the European Mediterranean area. Actually, in Sa Coma, on the beautiful east coast of the Spanish island Mallorca. On May 1-5, 2013, people from all over the world met for the second time in the exclusive ambience of the Protur Biomar Gran Hotel & Spa to join a music festival with unique live music and great moments together with artists and other fans during the whole event. This musical (short) vacation was all about enjoying the finer things in life. Good weather. Good food. Good wine. Good music. Good entertainment. On stage, we welcomed some of the biggest and most successful international stars of the Contemporary and Smooth Jazz scene. The live concerts took place on Friday and Saturday evening and on Sunday forenoon until afternoon. But before the concerts were 18 Smooth Lifestyle | Rückblick Mallorca Smooth Jazz Festival 2013

held, fans from around the world have sniﬀed “pre-festival-air” in exclusive side events: The culinary entry gave Wednesday evening when Tomeu Caldentey, Mallorca’s first chef to be awarded with a Michelin Star, welcomed to the Gala Dinner, which the fans spent together with all the artists. While on Thursday a trip to Palma de Mallorca, including the Old Town and subsequent shopping tour, was on the agenda, it went “culinary” on Friday: On a half-day excursion to a traditional Mallorcan Bodega participants and artists enjoyed a guided tour followed by a wine tasting. The perfect introduction to the first evening with live music on stage… Saturday was then the day devoted to sport: for those who wanted could play golf with Paul Brown and Darren Rahn. The ones, who weren’t in the mood for sports after an extensive first evening full of concerts, enjoyed the relaxed holiday atmosphere in the Festival Hotel’s piano bar or by the pool – together with artists and other music lovers.

The 2nd annual Smooth Jazz Festival Mallorca was held this year at the first weekend of May at the Protur Biomar Grand Hotel & Spa in Mallorca, Spain, that provided the perfect backdrop to this event, besides the hotel director is a huge smooth jazz fan and supporter of the event. Festival organizer Christian Bössner did once more a great job offering a topclass lineup, bringing some of the genre‘s finest players to the Balearic island, they were supported by the house band of German players, featuring Lutz Deterra (keyboards), Martin Feske (guitar), Marius Goldhammer (bass) and special guest, local drummer Patti Ballinas. The weather was nice and the crowd was ready to be entertained and have some fun. The festival was kicked off by saxophonist Michael Lington, who originally hails from Denmark and has some personal ties to the island, having spent several holidays with his family there when he was a kid. He brought things right up to speed with his lively playing, among the songs done were „Twice In A Lifetime“ which segued into the Sanborn/ James classic „Maputo“, which inspired the previous composition. Another nice one was „You And I“, one of if his chart topping hits. Then he summoned a bunch of his friends to the stage (Rick Braun, Darren Rahn, Marc Antoine, Rocco Ventrella) for a shuﬄing blues track, after that he asked a woman from the audience to join him so he could serenade her with some heartfelt sax playing, before he did „Roadtrip“ from his Pure

After an intermission, the producers Darren Rahn on saxophone and Paul Brown on guitar took over the stage. Both artists have been involved in a string of hit records, having produced several of the genre‘s biggest stars, apart from having released their own successful albums over the years, in addition they have been recording together previously. The Wes-inclined playing of Paul Brown blended well with the silky smooth tenor saxophone of Darren Rahn. After the first couple of tracks, Marc Antoine joined the stage to do „Brother Earl“, a song he recorded with Paul Brown on their Foreign Exchange album. Then acknowledging one of their hit productions, they did „Grazing In the Grass“ featuring Rick Braun on trumpet, later turning up the heat with their great rendition of „Ain‘t No Stoppin‘ Us Now“, followed by the Luther Vandross classic „If Only For One Night“ (with whom Paul Brown actually worked in the studio). Then back to one of the Paul Brown classics with „Sugar Fish“, a request he got on the street in Palma the day before, having the woman asking for it dancing in the isle, which prompted Paul Brown to go out in the audience, being the gentleman he is, with Darren Rahn adding some smoking sax work to the song. Later, Paul Brown did „Moondance“, before the groove picked up again with „24/7“ featuring Rick Braun on trumpet, bringing the audience to their feet. Then all the artists present were summoned onto the stage to do „Mercy, Mercy, Mercy“, bringing an outstanding show to an end. The audience demanded an encore, which was given in the form of Grover Washington‘s „Winelight“, ending the first concert evening at 1am. Saturday night, the festival continued with guitarist Matt Marshak, his funky and bluesy playing won the crowd over quickly, the house band had drummer Andy Pilger taking over, plus the same players from the night before. He did „Sunday Noon“, followed by „Cadillac Kid“, bringing things up to speed. Next he honored one of his main influences - George Benson - with his rendition of „Breezin‘“. He slowed things down a bit with a new song called „Teddy P“ which featured a cool, slow groove and funky, distorted guitar, that was very well received. His show continued with head-bopping, accessible and groovy funk-jazz, featuring his guitar playing, supported by the great band, during „Funkology“, Marius Goldhammer did a wicked bass solo, that had the crowd cheer along, while Andy Pilger pulled all the stops during his complex drum solo. Another nice one was „On The Rocks“, followed by his rendition of the Larry Carlton classic „Sleepwalk“. He gave us one encore that got people up, clapping and dancing along, wrapping up a great show. Next was trumpet player Rick Braun, being supported by saxophonist Rocco Ventrella, bringing almost the energy of an R ‚n‘ R show. Rick started the show playing from the audience, slowly wandering towards the stage, the first groovy track featured another awesome bass solo by Marius Goldhammer, jokingly nick-named „Goldfinger“ by Rick. Rick and Rocco blended really well together, and Rocco Ventrella played his heart out. Rick played his biggest hit „Notorious“ on the flugelhorn, before he slowed things down with the Tony Bennett classic „The Good Life“ from his Sings With Strings album, featuring him on flugelhorn and vocals. After this romantic excursion, the pace picked up with more groovy tracks, one of them „Use Me“ that allowed for some audience participation, having Michael Lington to join the party on the saxophone. They kept the energy level high with „Green Tomatoes“ from his Esperanto album, before he wrapped up the show with „Grazing In The Grass“. The encore was the funky „Mustang

Sunday shortly before noon, the festival continued with saxophonist Rocco Ventrella who did his own 45 minutes show, he kicked it off with a cool cover of an r&b classic, next was „Teresa Margarita“ from his current release Sweet Temptation, featuring a swaying reggae vibe, after that he turned up the heat with „Rocco Funk“, before he settled into „Knock On Wood“ and one more picture perfect smooth jazz song, before he invited singer Ilaria De Robertis onto the stage, she also comes from Bari, Italy. She did two songs and won the audience over in heartbeat with her heartfelt singing, she actually gave me goose bumps! They finished the show with a shuﬄing blues number, having Marc Antoine and Matt Marshak joining in. Rocco Ventrella did an excellent show and is a player to watch! After that, guitarist Marc Antoine and keyboardist Brian Simpson did their show, first each one featured one of his songs, before Brian Simpson did his „South Beach“ on the keytar, allowing him to get to the center of stage. Then it was Marc Antoine‘s turn for a couple of his tracks, then Brian Simpson did „Brazilia“ that got its inspiration from a trip to Rio, then another latin groover from Marc, which really blended nicely into the flow of music. One personal highlight was Brian doing his sensuous „Let‘s Get Close“ which culminated in a great piano solo. After that it was „Saturday Cool“, which segued in Grover Washingtin, Jr.‘s „Mr. Magic“ having Brian stepping out into the audience with his keytar, allowing for one more slapping bass solo by Marius Goldhammer, marking the highlight of the show. I had to rush off after that track to catch my bus to the airport, but I got loads of outstanding music by a bunch of world-class players over the course of this festival. In addition, I met many old and new friends, chatted with other music aficionados, enjoyed the excellent facilities of the hotel and had a great time in Mallorca. I have marked my calendar for next year already, the Smooth Jazz Festival Mallorca 2014 will take place April 29 - May 4, 2014, at the same location. See you there!
