Lust, wieder mal richtig schön auszugehen? Das SMOOTH JAZZ FESTIVAL AUGSBURG im Parktheater im Kurhaus Göggingen geht in die fünfte Runde und hat sich auf drei Konzertabende erweitert. Zum Abschluss gibt’s zudem am Sonntag einen Brunch im Dorint Hotel. Ausgelassene Stimmung in schickem Ambiente, dazu coole Musik von den Top-Stars der internationalen Contemporary und Smooth Jazz-Szene. Party, Platz zum Tanzen und hautnaher Kontakt mit den Musikern sind inklusive. In den Seitenflügeln des historischen Kurhauses gibt es Drinks und Lounge-Food und weitere Sitzmöglichkeiten laden hier zum Entspannen ein. Auch der Innenhof ist geöffnet – perfekt für laue Spätsommernächte unter freiem Sternenhimmel. Besucher aus allen Teilen Europas werfen sich in Schale und treffen sich in gehobener Clubatmosphäre zu einem rundum stimmungsvollen, entspannten - und verlängertem! - Wochenende mit acht internationalen Top-Stars und unbeschwerten Aftershow-Chillouts.

The SMOOTH JAZZ FESTIVAL AUGSBURG in the Park Theater at Kurhaus Göggingen (Augsburg, Germany) goes to the fifth round and has enlarged to three evening concerts. At the end there is also a Sunday brunch at the Dorint Hotel. Unique atmosphere in chic ambience and in addition cool music celebrated by the Top Stars of the international Contemporary and Smooth Jazz scene. Party, space to dance and firsthand contact with the musicians included. In the side wings of the historic Kurhaus the catering crew will be offering drinks and lounge food, additional seating areas invite you to relax. Don‘t Talk, Dance! Chris Standring hat Gitarre studiert und schon in seinen Anfangsjahren vor allem klassische und JazzGitarre gespielt. Aus seinem umfangreichen musikalischen Background schöpft der Musiker seine melodischen und harmonischen Fähigkeiten. Standring wuchs in der kleinen Stadt Aylesbury in England auf, bekam ein Stipendium für das London College of Music (wo er mit dem National Youth Jazz Orchestra spielte) und schrieb Musik für BBC, bevor er 1991 nach Los Angeles zog. Nachdem er sich dank zahlreicher Club-Gigs in der heiß umkämpften zeitgenössischen Jazz-Szene vor Ort etabliert hatte, tat er sich mit Rodney Lee zusammen. Unter dem Namen Solar System arbeiteten sie 1996 gemeinsam an dem gleichnamigen Album, das sich noch stark an Acid Jazz orientierte. Gleichzeitig verfeinerte Standring seinen R&B-getriebenen Jazz-Sound, der später auch sein Markenzeichen werden sollte. 2008 gründete er sein eigenes Plattenlabel Ultimate Vibe Recordings und machte sich fortan einen Namen im modernen Urban Jazz-Genre mit ansteckenden Hits: „Cool Shades“ („Velvet“ 1998), „Hip Sway“, „Ain‘t Mad Atcha“(„Groovalicious“ 2003), „I Can’t Help Myself“ („Soul Express“ 2006), „Love & Paragraphs“ (2008) und „Oliver‘s Twist“ („Electric Wonderland“ 2012). Seitdem lebt Standring immer mehr auch seine Leidenschaft für unkonventionelle, letztlich aber erfolgreiche Alben aus: wie „Blue Bolero“, dessen Single „Bossa Blue“ zum #1 Billboard Contemporary Jazz Song des Jahres wurde. Im März 2014 kehrte er mit „Don’t Talk, Dance!“ zurück: Ein durch und durch europäisch-progressives Projekt mit Einflüssen aus Soul-Jazz-Dance, das er mit den besten Funk- und Soul-Studio-Musikern aus Los Angeles aufgenommen hat. Inspiriert vom Funk- und Soul-Stil der 70er Jahre hat er ein Album geschaffen, zu dem man unmöglich still sitzen kann. Die erste Singleauskopplung „Sneakin‘ Out The Front Door“ erreichte die #1 der Billboard Smooth Jazz Songs Charts.

Chris Standring’s extensive background in studying and playing classical and jazz guitar during his formative years has inspired melodic and harmonic possibilities throughout his career. The guitarist grew up in the small town of Aylesbury in England, later studying at London College of Music (where he played with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and received a Fellowship Diploma) and writing music for the BBC before moving to Los Angeles in 1991. After establishing himself on the competitive local contemporary jazz scene with extensive club gigs, he hooked up with Rodney Lee. In 1996, Standring honed in on the R&B driven jazz sound that would become his trademark, while working with Lee under the name Solar System on their acid jazz oriented self titled album. In 2008 Standring started his own record label Ultimate Vibe Recordings and since established himself as a popular mainstay in the contemporary urban jazz genre with infectious hits like “Cool Shades” (from 1998’s “Velvet”), “Hip Sway” (title track from his 2000 album), “Ain’t Mad Atcha” (2003’s “Groovalicious”), “I Can’t Help Myself” (from 2006’s “Soul Express”), “Love & Paragraphs” (from 2008’s “Love & Paragraphs”) and “Oliver’s Twist” (from 2012’s “Electric Wonderland”). Standring also has pushed his muse into offbeat and ultimately successful ventures like “Blue Bolero” (whose single “Bossa Blue” was the #1 Billboard Contemporary Jazz Track of the Year). Chris Standring returned in March 2014 with another musical left turn with “Don’t Talk, Dance!” – A deep European progressive soul-jazz-dance influenced project featuring the best funk and soul studio musicians in Los Angeles. Drawing on 70’s style funk and soul inspiration, Chris raises the bar once again with an album that is impossible to sit still to. Paul Taylor ist im Alter von sieben Jahren „auf das Saxophon“ gekommen. Er besuchte die Universität von Nevada (Las Vegas) und schloss sein Studium als „Music Performance Major“ ab. Obwohl der in Denver Geborene nach seinem Abschluss vor allem in Las Vegas gelebt und gearbeitet hat, eröffnete ihm die Nähe seiner Wahlheimat zu Los Angeles viele Möglichkeiten, mit Produzenten und Künstlern aus dem R & B- und Contemporary-JazzGenre zusammenzuarbeiten – z. B. Jeff Lorber. Der fragte Taylor 1994, ob er mit ihm auf dem Catalina Island Jazz Trax Festival spielen wolle. Auch Keiko Matsui und ihr Produzent/Ehemann Kazu waren von seiner charismatischen Performance so angetan, dass er zwei Jahre lang mit den Matsuis tourte und im Studio arbeitete (auf den Alben „Sapphire“ und „Dream Walk“). Kazu co-produzierte schließlich auch sein Debüt-Album „On The Horn“ (1995) mit dem #1-Radiohit „Till We Meet Again“. Obwohl Paul als Solo-Artist seither einer der beliebtesten Live-Acts des Genres ist, nahm er im Jahr 2000 nur allzu gern Russ Freemans Einladung an, mit den Rippingtons als Special Guest zu touren. Später tourte er mit der „Groovin‘ For Grover“ All-StarFormation (Jeff Lorber, Richard Elliot und Gerald Albright) und ist heute Teil von zwei der größten Sommer-Touren des Genres: „Gentlemen of the Night” (mit Marion Meadows und Warren Hill) und „Sax and the City“ (mit Meadows und Vincent Ingala). Taylor zählt schon lange zu den Beliebtesten und Besten des Genres, aber vor allem seit den letzten sieben Jahren surft er geradezu auf der Erfolgswelle. Angefangen hat es mit dem Album „Ladies Choice“ (2007), das die #1 der Billboard Contemporary Jazz-Charts erreichte. Weiter ging es mit „Burnin”, dem Titelsong seines 2009er Albums, sowie „Push To Start“ von „Prime Time“ (2011) und „Supernova“ aus seinem aktuellen Album „Tenacity“ (2014), die allesamt die Pole-Position in den Smooth Jazz Songs Charts eroberten. Paul Taylor took up the saxophone at the age of seven. Though the Denver native has lived and worked primarily in Las Vegas since graduating as a music performance major from University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the proximity of his adopted hometown to Los Angeles gave him many opportunities to vibe with R&B and contemporary jazz producers and artists. In 1994, Jeff Lorber asked Taylor to play with him at the Catalina Island Jazz Trax Festival. Another popular keyboard player, Keiko Matsui, and her producer/husband Kazu liked Taylor’s charismatic performance and offered him an audition with their band. He recorded and toured with the Matsuis for two years (appearing on “Sapphire” and “Dream Walk”), and Kazu Matsui eventually co-produced his debut album “On The Horn” (1995), which spawned the #1 radio hit “Till We Meet Again.” Although Taylor has since been one of the genre’s most popular live attractions as a solo artist, he eagerly accepted Russ Freeman’s invitation to tour with The Rippingtons as a special guest artist in 2000. He later toured as a featured performer with the all-star “Groovin’ For Grover” lineup (including Lorber, Richard Elliot and Gerald Albright). The first name and the long hair are misleading: Marion Meadows is a man – with a penchant for stylish outfits. He prefers black, the man, whose ethnic mix is Native American, African American and Caucasian. With his exotic appearance and his black dreadlocks, he is surely a favourite with the Jazzloving ladies. The saxophonist (soprano-, tenor- and baritone sax) was born in West Virginia, but he grew up in Connecticut. He began playing clarinet and studying classical music at eight years old. way audiences reacted to him and his student cohorts in Holland, Italy and Austria. “It was a tremendous rush, and lit the fire.” After studying jazz with Anthony Truglia, Meadows attended Berklee College of Music, where he majored in arranging and composition. He later went to the SUNY Purchase School for the Arts, where he studied under Ron Herder and perfected his craft studying with Joe Henderson, Dave Liebman and Eddie Daniels. As a musician he sets an example for countless smooth saxophonists, who all try to follow suit with the casually cool, but still powerfully emotional Meadows sound. By now he has worked together with a number of wellknown artists like Brook Brenton, Eartha Kitt, Phyllis Hyman, Jean Carne, The Temptations, Michael Bolton or Angela Bofill. The ‘90s marked the beginning of his solo career when he signed with RCA on the strength of his unreleased first album “For Lovers Only” (1991). He became a staple of the smooth jazz format with his subsequent recordings. “Whisper” (2013) is the name of his current release.

Große Leidenschaft

Aufgewachsen ist der musikalische Hüne quasi in der Kirche; sein Großvater und Vater waren Pastoren. So nahm in der Kirche denn auch seine Musikkarriere ihren Lauf: er spielte dort Schlagzeug. Auf ein ganz anderes Instrument brachte ihn schließlich jemand, der eines Tages mit „Saiten“ beim Gottesdienst auftauchte. Als er den Bass für sich entdeckte, war Vaughn 15 Jahre alt. Es war Liebe auf den ersten Klang. Das Spielen brachte er sich selbst bei. So stellte er fest, dass er nach Gehört spielen kann. Als Julian 19 war, kaufte sein Großvater ihm eine 6-String Bass-Gitarre und bald schon spielte er hauptsächlich Soli. Es dauerte nicht mehr lange, bis klar war, dass der Bass nicht nur ein Hobby, sondern seine Leidenschaft war. Die Leidenschaft seines Lebens. Bis dato hat Vaughn schon auf zahlreichen renommierten JazzFestivals wie etwa dem Dubai International Jazz Festival, dem Seabreeze Jazz Festival, dem Catalina Island Jazz Festival und dem Big Bear Lake Festival gespielt. Obwohl er genau weiß, welcher Stil bei den Radiosendern gut ankommt, schreibt Vaughn seine Stücke frei von der Leber weg. „Ich will Musik für Menschen machen, nicht für das Format. Was ich schreibe, ist Ausdruck dessen, was mich bewegt“, sagt Vaughn. „Musik ist mein Ein und Alles und ich liebe, was ich tue.“ Mit seinem Spiel führt Vaughn C-Jazz in seine Zukunft und schlägt so ein neues Kapitel auf.

Lead bass player from Kansas City, Julian Vaughn stands 6’7“ tall, now getting attention not for his height, but his dynamic and inventive talents as a rising jazz star. His first hit single “On Your Feet” reached and stayed at #1 on the Billboard for three consecutive weeks (from his latest album “Breakthrough”). His music is proving to be a breakthrough, as he takes C-Jazz into its new future. Vaughn grew up in Kansas City, in the church where his grandfather and father were pastors. He began his music career playing the drums in the church. At age 15, Julian decided to try out a different instrument after seeing a bass guitar someone had in the church. He fell in love with it at first sight. Vaughn taught himself to play and realized he could play by ear. When Vaughn was 19 his grandfather bought him a 6-string bass guitar. He began soloing on the bass and soon realized this was not just a hobby but was to be his life’s passion. Vaughn has performed at notable Jazz festivals such as the Dubai International Jazz Festival, Seabreeze Jazz Festival, Catalina Island Jazz Festival and Big Bear Lake Fastival. From the Dubai Festival he was discovered and signed to a recording contract with “Trippin ‘N’ Rhythm Records”. Vaughn doesn’t write for industry trends, although he understands what flavor works in the radio format, — he writes from his heart. “Whatever is moving me at the moment is what dictates the end. I want to make music for the people not format,” says Vaughn. “Music is my everything; that’s why I love doing what I do.”

»If I want sax, I call Candy...« „If I want Sax, I call Candy“, schwärmte einst Megastar Prince und er ist nicht der einzige, der bei Candy Dulfer anklingelt – die Holländerin hat sich am Saxophon längst einen international renommierten Namen gemacht. Für die Tochter des bekannten Jazz-Saxophonisten Hans Dulfer war schon früh klar, dass sie in seine Fußstapfen treten wird. Bereits als Sechsjährige griff Candy zum Saxophon, mit 14 hatte sie ihre erste eigene Band (Funky Stuff ), mit der sie bis heute zusammenarbeitet. 1987 heizte sie im Vorprogramm von Madonna ein, ein Jahr später hätte sie für Prince die Shows in den Niederlanden eröffnen sollen. Als sie kurzfristig eine Absage erhielt, beschwerte sich Candy mit einem Brief bei ihm. Was offenbar Eindruck gemacht hat: Der Mann aus Minneapolis lud sie als Gast auf die Bühne ein. Seitdem ging sie mehrfach mit ihm auf Tour und ist auf diversen seiner Alben zu hören. 1990 erschien Candy Dulfers erstes Solo-Album „Saxuality“, das sich als großer Erfolg erwies. “If I want sax, I call Candy” Megastar Prince once said adoringly – and he is not the only one with whom Candy Dulfer rings a bell – the Dutchwoman has long since made a name for herself internationally as a saxophonist. The daughter of the well-known Jazz saxophonist Hans Dulfer soon knew that she would be treading in her father’s footsteps. Candy started playing the sax as a six-year-old; at 14 she had a band of her own (Funky Stuff ) with whom she works together up to the present day. In 1987 she put the heat on the audience as a supporting act for Madonna, and one year later she should have opened Prince’s shows in the Netherlands. When she received a cancellation at short notice she wrote him a letter of complaint. Which apparently was worth the effort: the man from Minneapolis invited her as a guest onto his stage. Since that day she repeatedly went on tours with him and can be heard on many of his albums. In 1990 Candy Dulfer`s first solo album “Saxuality” appeared and was an immediate success. Candy toured almost all of Europe and even performed in the U.S. With rewards: a Grammy Award nomination in the category “Best Pop-Album Instrumental”. During the last years Candy Dulfer has worked together with Dave Stewart, Van Morrison, Sheila E., Lionel Richie, Beyoncé, Pink Floyd, Chaka Khan, David Sanborn, Aretha Franklin and Jonathan Butler. Contemporary jazz guitarist Matt Marshak, a native of Long Island, New York, grew up on rock ‘n’ roll music in a home full of musicians. Passing guitarists inspired his playing, and in high school his teacher turned him on to the contemporary jazz and blues guitar sounds of Larry Carlton, George Benson and Robben Ford. Once out of college, Marshak performed a variety of musical styles with New York’s top original bands and artists. In 2001, Marshak released his debut CD “Preservation” and began to get more notice in New York. Later he opened for the popular “Guitars & Saxes” tour. In 2008 his album “On the Rocks” earned praise from JazzTimes magazine as “one of the best smooth jazz CDs of the year, for sure.” In his release “Colors of Me” (2012), Matt Marshak taps into the wonderful diversity of music, shading his classic and fluid style with jazz, blues, rock, pop and even down-home boogie. This release follows 2011‘s highly received “Urban Folktales”, which captured a sophisticated late-night vibe and boasted a #1 song on the 2011 indie jazz chart, “Silent Knowing.” Marshak’s latest album “Lifestyle” is going to be released in 2014. Marcus Anderson wuchs als jüngstes von sieben Kindern in South Carolina auf. Sein außerordentliches musikalisches Talent entdeckte seine Familie, als er im Alter von zwölf Jahren anfing, Saxophon zu spielen. Später studierte Marcus Jazz an der North Carolina Central University. 2005 veröffentlichte er sein Debüt-Album „My Turn“ - ein brillantes zeitgenössisches Jazz-Album, in das der junge Musiker seine ganze Leidenschaft gesteckt hat. Voll mit romantischen Balladen und Jazz-Grooves war „My Turn“ ein ausgezeichneter Vorgeschmack auf das, was von dem aufstrebenden Künstler noch zu erwarten ist. Mit nur 24 Jahren veröffentliche Marcus 2009 sein zweites Album „From the Heart“ und schaffte seinen Durchbruch, indem er die Capital Jazz Fest-Challenge gewann. Seitdem hat Anderson einen kometenhaften Aufstieg erlebt, tourte mit Prince, Sheila E. und Anthony Hamilton. The youngest of seven grew up in a musical family, performing and singing in church with his older brothers. Anderson’s family recognised his talent as a musical prodigy when he was introduced to the saxophone aged twelve. A son of South Carolina, Anderson studied jazz at North Carolina Central University. In 2005, Anderson released his debut album “My Turn”, a stellar contemporary jazz record the young musician put his heart and soul into. Filled with romantic ballads and jazz grooves “My Turn” was a sophisticated introduction to what was to come from the up and coming star. At the age of only 24, 2009 saw the release of his sophomore album “From the Heart”. Anderson’s breakthrough into contemporary jazz circles came in the same year as the winner of the Capital Jazz fest Challenge. Since then, Anderson has had a meteoric rise to success, touring with Prince, Sheila E. and Anthony Hamilton. Anderson has been honoured to open for and join on stage artists such as Ledisi, Lalah Hathaway, Peter White, Boney James, Kirk Whalum, Gerald Albright, George Duke, Wynton Marsalis, Alex Bugnon, Nnenna Freelon, Jeff Lorber, Bob Baldwin and Jennifer Holiday. Der Pianist, Komponist, Arrangeur und Produzent Lutz tourte ab 1982 für die Firma Technics Musical Instruments auf internationalen Bühnen wie die Wembley-Hall in London oder die Kumputa Festival-Hall in Kuala Lumpur. Seit 1991 ist Lutz Mitglied des „Matsushita Musician-Team’s”, das die musikalische Software und Konzeption der Technics-Keyboards in Japan entwirft. Hier lernte er auch den Jazz-Musiker Dave Grusin kennen, mit dem er alsbald in England Konzerte gab.

Günter ist freiberuflicher Bassist, Sänger, Songwriter, Arrangeur und Musikproduzent aus Köln. Im Laufe der Jahre hat er auf der Bühne und im Studio (Bass & Gesang) mit zahlreichen Künstlern gearbeitet, wie Cascada, Gloria Gaynor, Jennifer Rush, Udo Lindenberg, James Blunt, Hiram Bullock, Sugarbabes, Rick Braun, Anthony Weedon, Slim Man, Nathan East, Janita, The Rasmus etc.

Seine Anpassungsfähigkeit und seine „schnellen Ohren“ haben ihn währenddessen in Deutschland zum gefragten Session-Musiker gemacht. Lutz spielt seitdem in mehreren Bandformationen und ist Keyboarder in diversen Musical-Welterfolgen, u. a. Starlight Express, Elisabeth, Miami Nights, Tabaluga und Saturday Night Fever. 1997 erschien sein Solo-Album „Out of my pocket”. 1999 tourte er mit den Stars der US-Jazz-Szene Nelson Rangell, Nathan East, Rick Braun, Peter White, Eric Marienthal und Gabriela Anders durch Europa. Es folgten Engagements u. a. mit Marla Glen in der ARD und Jennifer Rush in London. 72 mal trat er in der TV-Musikshow „Hast du Töne“ (VOX) auf. 2011 veröffentlichte er die CD „Rue Parnasse“.

Von 2005-2007 war er als Produzent und Remixer Teil von „Fudge X”. Eines von vielen Projekten war der Song „Crockett’s Theme – in da house remix” für den Hollywood-Film „Miami Vice” mit Colin Farrell und Jamie Foxx, zusammen mit dem Produzent Jan Hammer. Der Song hielt sich zehn Wochen in den deutschen Top10. 2003 gründete er ein Songwriting-Team mit Peter Wieschermann. Neben Liedern für deutsche TV-Serien (RTL) schrieb das Team auch den Song „Yesterdays World” für die TV-Spots der Deutschen Kinder-Stiftung „Kindernothilfe”, die auf allen großen TV-Sendern Deutschlands gelaufen sind. Die Festivalband MARTIN FESKE Gitarre Der in Köln und Texas ausgebildete Gitarrist Martin Feske hat im Laufe seiner Karriere mit unzähligen namhaften Künstlern zusammengearbeitet, unter ihnen so unterschiedliche Musiker wie Till Brönner, Jeff Lorber, Lew Soloff, Peter Fessler oder Peter Kraus, Bill Ramsey, Andru Donalds und Sasha. Seine Konzerttätigkeit führte ihn u. a. zu den Berliner und Leverkusener Jazztagen, aber auch ins europäische Ausland. Zudem arbeitet er als Fachbereichsleiter der Abteilung Jazz/Pop und Gitarre an der Musikschule Bocholt und ist Dozent für Jazz/ Pop-Gitarre an der Musikhochschule Münster.

Andy ist ein professioneller Schlagzeuger und Percussionist aus Köln. Seine musikalische Laufbahn begann er mit vier Jahren am Klavier, mit neun wechselte er zum Schlagzeug. Er genoss eine klassische Ausbildung an der Musikschule Duisburg und gewann den Bundeswettbewerb „Jugend musiziert”. Als Teenager nahm er Schlagzeugunterricht mit den Big Band-Schlagzeugern Ronnie Stephenson (Paul Kuhn) und Sperie Karas (WDR) und gewann den Bundeswettbewerb „Jugend jazzt”. Nach seiner Ausbildung studierte Andy Klassik und Jazz in Köln. Zu dieser Zeit arbeitete er bereits als professioneller Musiker in verschiedenen Bands. In der Musical-Szene ist Andy als „Inventar” bekannt – er spielte und spielt für große Produktionen wie Starlight Express, Jesus Christ Superstar, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Westside Story, Evita etc. Neben gemeinsamen Projekten mit Catarina Valente, Bill Ramsey, Howard Carpendale, Jennifer Rush, Joy Fleming, Shirley Bassey und Götz Alsmann tourte er durch Europa mit Eric Marienthal, Slim Man, Anthony Weedon, Vonda Shepard, Gabriela Anders, Rick Braun und Janita. 2011 spielte er auf dem North Sea Jazz Festival mit Herbie Hancock und Lang Lang.

Das Kurhaus Augsburg-Göggingen gibt es seit 1886. Erbaut in der Gründerzeit von dem Architekten Jean Keller, brannte es 1972 aus. 1996 wurde es – original rekonstruiert – neu eröffnet.

Das von dem Augsburger Jean Keller für die Hessing’schen Kuranstalten errichtete Theater gilt als in Europa einzigartiges Zeugnis der Architekturgeschichte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Viele vergleichbare Konstruktionen – angefangen vom Münchener Glaspalast bis hin zu den für die Weltausstellungen entstandenen Bauten der Zeit – sind verschwunden. Auch das Kurhaustheater war einst „verschwunden”. Es wurde erst 1972 wiederentdeckt, als es, damals von einer Baufirma als Lager genutzt, aus bis heute ungeklärter Ursache in Flammen aufging. Durch den Brand wurden später eingebaute Holzteile und Verkleidungen vernichtet. Zum Vorschein kam eine zweigeschossige Halle mit gußeisernen Säulen und Umgängen, mit ornamentalen Brüstungsgittern, mit von der Hitze ausgeglühten Eisensprossenfenstern und geborstenen farbigen Glasfenstern. Das Feuer hatte den Zuschauerraum des Kurhaustheaters (ca. 370 bewegliche Sitzplätze) mit seiner historischen Gusseisenkonstruktion freigelegt. Neu renoviert feierte das Parktheater Göggingen im Jahr 1996 seine Wiedereröffnung. 110 Jahre vorher, 1886, war es konzipiert worden als Theater, Gesellschaftshaus und Palmenhaus. Und so wird es heute wieder genutzt. 200 Kulturveranstaltungen finden pro Jahr statt. Darüber hinaus werden die unterschiedlich großen Räumlichkeiten des Kurhauses Göggingen an Pivatleute und Firmen vermietet.

Parktheater im Kurhaus Göggingen The Kurhaus Theater in Augsburg-Göggingen was erected in 1886. Built in the period of industrial expansion in Germany (late 1800s) by the Augsburg architect Jean Keller, it was destroyed by fire in 1972. After having been faithfully restored, it was reopened in 1996.

Architekturgeschichte des 19. Jahrhunderts

This splendid theater was built to supplement the orthopaedic Hessing Sanatorium. It is considered as a unique European testimonial of 19-century architecture. Many similar buildings – from the Munich Glass Palace to the constructions specially built for the World Exhibitions of that time – have disappeared. The Kurhaus Theater once had also “disappeared”. It was rediscovered in 1972 when a former cinema that at the time was used by a construction company as an off-the-road storage facility, went up in flames for reasons still unknown. The fire destroyed wooden parts and coverings that were added over time. A double-storey hall came to the surface displaying cast-iron pillars and corridors together with ornamental balustrades, burntout iron muntin windows and burst stained-glass windows. The fire exposed the auditorium of the Kurhaus Theater (approx. 370 movable seats) with its historic cast-iron construction. Following an extensive renovation period, the Park Theater in Göggingen celebrated its reopening in 1996. 110 years earlier, in 1886, the Park Theater was designed as a theatre and community centre with an integrated palm house. Today, it is once again used as such hosting 200 cultural events per year. In addition, the various-sized premises are rented to both private individuals and companies.

Having established itself well over the years, the 6th annual Smooth Jazz Festival Augsburg took place September 13-14 at the Parktheater at the Kurhaus Göggingen. Both nights, all the seats were sold out with only a few tickets left in the standing areas, this year‘s edition obviously is a success. Like every year, smooth jazz fans from all across Europe gathered in Augsburg to hear some of their favorite players, have fun and meet like-minded people. I saw many familiar faces from previous years or the Mallorca Smooth Jazz Festival (which was held in May this year), talked to fellow music aficionados and musicians, in addition I made some new friends, it was like family. Again, festival organizer Christian Bössner was able to come up with another great line-up this year, bringing some of the top US smooth jazz players to Europe. With the exception of the Pizza Express in London and Steve Quirk‘s occasional smooth jazz concerts in Manchester, opportunities for smooth jazz artists in Europe have been scarce for years, so the Smooth Jazz Festivals in Mallorca and Augsburg provide a welcome platform to bring over those players. The concept of a local backing band supporting the main players has been working well, so the tried and tested band of Lutz Deterra on keys, Andy Pilger on drums, Günter Asbeck on bass and Martin Feske on guitar took over the job to play four concerts with the headlining US players, learning numerous songs, rehearsing in the afternoon and bringing the music onto the main stage in the evening. As usual, they did an excellent job.

The festival was opened by guitarist Jeff Golub, who turned blind during the summer of 2011 due to collapsed optical nerves, a rare eye disease which struck him suddenly. Thankfully, Jeff continues to pursue his music career, being well supported by the music community, he is touring, plays with many different artists, and just released a new CD Train Keeps A Rolling with organist Brian Auger. In Augsburg, he was led onto the stage and brought to his chair, where he performed his show sitting. He did nice covers of “Always There“ and the classic “Cold Duck Time“, from his own catalog he played a groovy version of “Dangerous Curves“, among other material from his catalog like “Naked City“. Before he was stuck with blindness, he used to be a very dynamic performer jumping around on stage, now being confined to a chair translated to his playing, which was a bit static and less dynamic than before. Nevertheless, he did an admirable job and repeatedly created some heat with his bluesy playing, which was well received with the capacity crowd. After a short intermission, the heat was turned up with the dynamic duo of saxophonists Steve Cole and Jeff Kashiwa, who are a well-rehearsed team being two thirds of the Sax Pack (with Kim Waters being the third member). Both players belong to the very best, they kicked off the show together with “Just A Natural Thang“ and later alternated performing material from their individual catalogs. In between songs,

they were joking and entertaining the audience with their brand of humor. Steve Cole did one of my favorite tracks of his, the soulful “Curtis“, a tribute to Curtis Mayfield and the town of Chicago, where he put all his heart and soul into the strong performance. Another great uptempo track was “Bounce“, while the cover of “Angel“ slowed things down a bit. Jeff Kashiwa also draws from a vast catalog, he played some nice laid-back material next to groovy uptempo material, both players concluded the show with Jeff Kashiwa‘s biggest hit “Hyde Park (The “Ah, Ooh“ Song)“ complete with audience participation. They were asked back to do an encore, so they showed their jazz chops with a cover of Stanley Turrentine‘s “Sugar“, which brought the first night to an end. Saturday night, the festival continued with the appearance of trumpet player Cindy Bradley with saxophonist Dan Cipriano. The two musicians are a newly wed couple, having married only three weeks ago, and one could feel their happiness. Dan Cipriano was tagged being one of the busiest saxophone players in NYC, and his resume was impressive with some of the biggest names from the rock and pop business he played with in the past. Now, since having fallen in love with Cindy, Dan started to appear with her more frequently and moved a bit more into smooth jazz territory. Being an accomplished player, he had no trouble to adapt to this format. It was clear from the beginning that this was a Cindy Bradley concert, they kicked off the show with “Deja Blue“ and moved on to “Lifted“, both tracks from her awesome Unscripted album, giving both players some time to solo. Another nice one was Wayne Shorter‘s “Footprints“ that allowed for some more extensive soloing, while “You Don‘t Know What Love Is“ played on the muted trumped proved to be a highlight of the show, showing Cindy Bradley‘s skills as a jazz player. In addition, Dan Cipriano did some cool flute playing. The band contributed some nice solos, especially Martin Feske on guitar and Lutz Deterra on keys made some outstanding contributions. They concluded their show with their #1 hit “Massive Transit“ that went down very well with the crowd. An encore was demanded, the band played “Curves Ahead“, finishing a truly great concert. This concert was the highlight of the whole festival for me. Next was Canadian saxophonist Warren Hill who appeared at the first Mallorca Smooth Jazz Festival two years ago, where he left a lasting impression. He was invited back and would guarantee an energetic show, and we were not disappointed. He started the concert with the Beatles‘ “Come Together“, that brought things nicely up to speed, segueing into the next funky track right away, supported by the cooking house band. Another memorable track was “Skinny Dippin‘“ from his current release La Dolce Vita. He slowed things down with two “baby making songs“ featuring his soprano sax, before he invited his daughter Olivia onto the stage. Olivia is 14 years old and pursues a career in acting/music

»Because we all just want to have a good time!« under the name of Olivia Rox, she did a cover of a Beyoncé song and brought the house down with her expressive and soulful vocals. During another song, Warren made a stroll into the audience and played his sax standing on a chair to the delight of the crowd. The pace picked up with “Mambo 2000“, one of this biggest hits, Martin Feske provided some nice Santana-like guitar playing to this song. Going a bit back in time, Warren did a cover of “Frankenstein“ by the Edgar Winter Group, before it was time to party with “Play That Funky Music“ with some audience participation. This brought another great issue of the Augsburg Jazz Festival to a rousing end. This year‘s edition of the festival proved to be another winner and it is safe to say that the Augsburg Smooth Jazz Festival has established itself firmly by now and will be a place to hear our favorite smooth jazz artists for years to come. I applaud Christian Bössner for his hard work and dedication to bring this music to us in such a nice package. I already look forward to the Mallorca Smooth Jazz Festival 2014, which will take place May 1-4, 2014 in the Protur Biomar Gran Hotel & Spa, a 5 star hotel in Sa Coma, Mallorca.

On May 1st, this year‘s edition of the annual Mallorca Smooth Jazz Festival on the island of Mallorca, Spain, took place as usual at the Protur Biomar Hotel in Sa Coma, a nice 5 star resort on the eastern coast of the island. For those people interested, there was pre-festival program with a gala diner with all artists, a trip to Palma de Mallorca and one more trip to Valdemossa the next day, allowing the exploration of the island and mingling with artists and fellow music aficionados. The basic concept of the festival is to bring some of the best U.S. smooth jazz artists to Europe and have a band of local professional musicians

back them up. This job was ably taken care of by Lutz Deterra on keys, Günter Asbeck on bass, Andy Pilger and Stephan Sagurna on drums and Jörg Lenhardt on guitar. The festival opened with the show of saxophonist Elan Trotman, a quickly rising star in the smooth jazz world, I consider him to have what it takes to make it to the very top of the genre. He appropriately started his concert with Chick Corea‘s „Spain“, before settling into his own material, he did „Heaven In Your Eyes“ from the Love & Sax album, a nice laidback song featuring his smooth sax playing. Next was the Bill Wither‘s

song „Lovely Day“, as a surprise guest, he brought the soulful songstress Evita he met the night before to do this song in style with him. Next was his famous Earth, Wind & Fire medley, before slowing things down with his own „Tradewinds“ from his current Tropicality album, bringing guitarist Peter White as surprise guest onto the stage, who also was instrumental in the creation of this record. The show was concluded with his tropical version of Stevie Wonder‘s „Master Blaster“, having Jessy J to help him out with this song, bringing the crowd to their feet. The second concert Thursday night was by saxophonist Richard Elliot, starting his show powerfully with „Rock Steady“, segueing into „Move On Up“, followed by Marvin Gaye‘s „Inner City Blues“ with a nod to his idol Grover Washington, Jr. The groove continued with „Retro Boy“, before things became soulful with the Earth, Wind & Fire classic „Reasons“, a song he recorded with the Summer Horns last year, baﬄing the audience with low growling sounds from his sax. Next was „Boom Town“ that gave bassist Günter Asbeck some solo space allowing him to play some mean slapping bass. No Richard Elliot show is complete without the Percy Sledge classic „When A Man Loves A Woman“, a song he always pours his heart and soul into. Then things turned jazzy for a change with „Night In Tunisia“ where Richard Elliot could show his considerable straight ahead chops, then kicking things up a notch with „Keep On Truckin‘“, complete with his voice overs on the EWI, plus guest Shilts on sax providing some more heavy saxophone playing. The heat was rising with saxophonist Elan Trotman and guitarist Nick Colionne joining the stage, ending the show in a frenzy. They returned for one encore, doing „I Heard It Through The Grapevine“, bringing the first night to a satisfying end. Friday night was opened by saxophonist Jessy J who delivered a very laid-back latin tinged smooth jazz set, relating to her Mexican heritage. She opened her set with the nice „Remember The Night“ that featured her smooth tenor sound, before singing the Brazilian classic „Manha De Carnaval“. Next was her own „Sin Ti (Without You)“, keeping things nicely grooving along, with the pace picking up again with Sergio Mendes‘ „Mas Que Nada”. Then she went back to her debut album from 2008 and did one of her biggest hits, the great „Tequila Moon“ that suited her playing style very well, wandering in the audience to the delight of her fans. After that, she invited special guest Gregg Karukas to the stage to do the easy swaying „Tropcial Rain“ with her, before it was time to raise the heat with the Tito Puente classic „Oye Como Va“ where she had Nick Colionne joining in to add some serious guitar playing. They wrapped up the show with her own „Hot Sauce“ which segued into „Baila!“, having the audience get up and clap and dance along. As an encore, she played the Gloria Estefan hit „Conga“ that brought a nice show to an end. After an intermission, guitarist extraordinaire Nick Colionne took over the stage, he kicked off his set with two fiery instrumentals, showing his

tremendous guitar skills. He slowed things down with „Rainy Night In Georgia“ featuring his velvety voice, one of the highlights of the whole show. He got serious with the hard hitting „Hurry Up This Way Again“, during this song he went out into the audience wandering around, doing a lengthy solo that pulled all the stops, delighting his numerous fans. Then it was time to get „wild and loose“ with the ultra funky JB track „Super Bad“ where he invited guests Shilts and Jessy J on sax and Peter White on guitar to join the party, while Nick Colionne did his famous James Brown impersonation going out into the audience prompting people to get up and dance, which was a riot, the house was cooking. This lengthy jam ended the show, with everybody in a state of excitement, he was prompted to do an encore, so he did his current single „Got To Keep It Moving“, ending a truly great concert. Nick Colionne definitely is one of the genre‘s most entertaining and most consummate performers. Saturday night, the festival continued with Spencer Day, a crooner in the vein of Michael Bublé and Frank Sinatra, he opened his show with the mellow groover „Missing Tonight“ featuring his strong velvety voice. Movie Of Your Life“ that kept the laid-back groove going on. He did a couple of covers, „Runaway“ and The Young Rascals‘ „Groovin‘“ done to perfection, which marked an early highlight for me. „Something Wicked“ followed with a decidedly 60ies feeling, followed by „Shadow Man“ that was another perfect vehicle for his voice. He did an up-tempo Nancy Sinatra song, before turning his attention to sad love songs, before he concluded his show with „The Mystery Of You”. The audience asked for more, so they got the encore with the Frank Sinatra song „One For My Baby“, just him singing at the piano.

Sunday morning the festival went on with keyboardist Gregg Karukas, he was supported by the house band and the great local saxophonist Miguel Ramon, who blended in well with his smooth and restrained sax playing. They started their show with some original material, first they did „Wildwood“, followed by „Nightshift“ and „Severna Park“, all featuring the impeccable playing by this awesome pianist. Next was „Girl In The Red Dress“, the song built up nicely and featured several burning solos by various band members, the groove continued with „Riverside Drive“, a smashing number with a catchy melody, that went down very well. To slow things down, he did a solo piano version of „Sound Of Emotion“ which was very moving. The band joined in for the laid-back „Daylight“ that featured more nice sax work by Miguel Ramon. Gregg strapped on his keytar and played some new material from his upcoming album, some even untitled and performed live for the very first time, like a great head bopping funky track that is destined to become a future hit, one more mellow song that boasted his melodic playing style, and a groovy latin track that was off the hook. The show was finished with his

own twist on the Beatles classic „Come Together“, having everybody get up. This was another memorable show by a consummate artist. The last show of the festival was done by former Down To The Bone front man, saxophonist Paul „Shilts“ Weimar, he went right into it with the groovy „See What Happens“, followed by „Look, What‘s Happened“ which was another head bopper. He changed the pace a bit with „Good Evans“, a song written for his father that was very special, it featured a nice intro on the keys by Lutz Deterra and a great straight ahead part in the middle of the song, providing an early highlight of the show. Then they did the beautiful „See Things Clearly“, one of his chart topping hits, providing some smooth jazz bliss. He changed gears again with Stanley Turrentine‘s jazz classic „Sugar“, that gave Andy Pilger the opportunity for a smoking drums solo. The pace was slowed down with his heartfelt cover of Rose Royce‘s „Wishing Upon A Star“ where he also wandered around in the audience to play. He invited special guest Nick Colionne on guitar to play one up-tempo funky track with him, turning up the heat. To get us up on our feet, he did the Down To The Bone track „Staten Island Groove“, then he invited Greg Karukas who provided some more great keyboard playing one more Down To The Bone track, wrapping up the show. They came back for one more and did a shuﬄing blues number with everyone improvising along, bringing the festival to great end. This was another memorable and entertaining Mallorca Smooth Jazz Festival, it was well attended by an international crowd of smooth jazz aficionados and held on the premises of the Protur Biomar Gran Hotel who always welcomes the festival with open arms. After that, it was time to get back to business with guitarist Peter White, he kicked off his show with a groovy song featuring his great guitar playing, segueing into „Could It Be I‘m Falling In Love“. In addition to the house band, he was supported by two young horn players from the local band Saxophobia Funk Project who did a great job. Next was the cool Isley Brothers classic „Who‘s That Lady“ with special guest Gregg Karukas adding some wicked keys, jumping around on the stage with his keytar strapped on, while Peter took the song to the next level with his distorted guitar sounds, segueing into The Temptations‘ „Papa Was A Rolling Stone“, which is always a crowd pleaser. He slowed it down with „Desert Nights“ with a decidedly Flamenco feeling, just accompanied by Greg Karukas on the keys, which was simply beautiful. Then he did his rendition of „I Can See Clearly Now“, followed by one his own compositions that featured a great soprano sax solo, and the breezy „Costa Rica“ from his current Here We Go album, with a great drum solo by Stephan Sagurna. To get us some rest, he played a solo guitar interlude that included among other tracks the Bee Gee‘s „How Deep Is Your Love“. The groove picked put with his rendition of „Walk On By“ with special guest Shilts doing a great sax solo. With the energy up, „Bueno Funk“ was the appropriate choice to keep things moving along, Shilts contributed some more smoking sax to this one as well. Then he put his sunglasses on, doing the James Bond theme, before they went into Bob Marley‘s „Get Up Stand Up“ with Jessy J being added to the proceedings, by now the stage got seriously crammed with a veritable all-star band. With all players of the night on stage, they wrapped up the show with „San Diego“, after that they were asked back for an encore and did the Marvin Gaye classic „What‘s Going On“, where Spencer Day was also invited and did some great singing, bringing a truly special night to a rousing end.

JAZZ FUNK SOUL – Jazz Funk Soul Drei Schwergewichte des Contemporary Jazz haben sich zur Supergroup „Jazz Funk Soul“ verbunden: Keyboarder Jeff Lorber, Gitarrist Chuck Loeb und Saxophonist Everette Harp. Auf ausgewählten Tracks wird die Gruppe von Dave Mann (Horns), Lenny Castro (Percussion), Till Brönner (Trompete) und vielen anderen unterstützt. Das Album beginnt mit „Speed Of Light“, von Jeff Lorber komponiert, um die Fähigkeiten des Trios in den Vordergrund zu bringen. Lorber führt mit seinem Rhodes Piano in die Melodie, während Harp das Altsaxophon betont, schließlich schmückt Loeb alles mit schnellen Gitarrenakkorden im Stil von George Benson. Geschwindigkeit ist für Musikprofis ein wichtiges Element. Lorber drückt mit seinem Synthbass aufs Tempo bei „Adrenaline“, die anderen kommen auf dieser Ebene ins Spiel. Die instrumentale Ballade „Silent Partner“ präsentiert Harp auf dem EWI. Das elektronische Blasinstrument gibt der Melodie einen besonders weichen Ton. Mit „Jazz, Funk, Soul“ vereinen Lorber, Loeb und Harp ihre Fähigkeiten, um etwas Größeres zu schaffen.

Die südafrikanische Ikone Jonathan Butler ist eine elementare Kraft auf der Bühne. Er bringt das Publikum zum Kochen. Seine Musikerkollegen lieben diese Ausstrahlung und folgten gerne seinem Ruf zur Aufnahme der neuen CD. In den Liner Notes stehen u.a. genannt George Duke, Marcus Miller, Elan Trotman und Katisse Buckingham. „Living My Dream“ (2014) ist ein Konzeptalbum mit den wichtigsten Momenten seines Lebens. Die Reise beginnt mit „African Breeze“, einem Soundtrack, den Butler ursprünglich zusammen mit Hugh Masekela für den Film „The Jewel of the Nile“ aufgezeichnet hatte. Ein brillantes Stück südafrikanischen Pop-Jazz-Jives mit Butler an der Nylon-String-Gitarre. Der Titelsong ist eine musikalische Beschreibung seines Lebens mit allen Höhen und Tiefen. Eine hingebungsvolle Reflexion voller Dankbarkeit für Gottes Gaben. Jonathan Butlers Mischung aus südafrikanischer Musik mit Smooth Jazz, R&B und Gospel macht „Living My Dream“ so einzigartig. Ein Musiker mit einem hohen Wiedererkennungswert.

Chicago‘s Gitarrist Nick Colionne hat gerade sein neues Album „Influences“ auf Trippin ‘N Rhythm Records veröffentlicht. Der Tod seiner langjährigen Partnerin und Managerin Carol Ray überschattete die Produktion dieses Projekts. Das Album ist ihr gewidmet. An der Aufnahme beteiligt ist Keyboarder James Lloyd (Pieces Of A Dream), der auch einige der Melodien schrieb und produzierte. Weiter dabei sind Maysa, John Blasucci, Chris „Big Dog“ Davis, Tim Gant und Mike Logan, Tony Brown und Tom Hipskind. „Slammin“ bedeutet attraktiv, stylisch, cool, angesagt. Alle Attribute definieren das erste Stück auf Nicks neuem Album. Bei „Got to Keep It Moving“ entwickelt Nick auf einem pulsierenden Bass-Rhythmus seine Gitarrenideen. Die Ballade „Born Again“ präsentieren Colionne und Maysa in einem Duett. „Sting Like a King B“ schließt das Album mit kräftigem Blues ab. Nick Colionne beweist mit „Influences“ erneut seine Musikalität auf der Gitarre quer durch alle Genres.

LES SABLER – Jobim Tribute Der kanadische Gitarrist Les Sabler präsentiert auf seiner Nylon-String-Gitarre das Album „Jobim Tribute“ mit 12 Kompositionen des legendären brasilianischen Komponisten, Songwriters und Sängers. Keyboarder Clay Perry, Bassist Byron House, Schlagzeuger Celso Alberti und Percussionist Joe Lala begleiteten ihn. Das Projekt beginnt mit einer Interpretation von „A Felicidade“, ein Lied über Glück und Trauer, über den Karneval und die große Illusion, bekannt durch den Film Black Orpheus. Weitere Titel sind „Corcovado“, in englischer Sprache als „Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars“ bekannt, „Esquecendo Voce“, ein sentimentales Gitarrenstück, „Bonita“ und „Nunca Mais Brigas“, Lieder über Höhen und Tiefen der Liebe. Wahre Leckerbissen für Liebhaber der akustischen Gitarre. Mit „Jobim Tribute“ öffnet Les Sabler seinen Blick auf die Welt des brasilianischen Komponisten und Musikers Antônio Carlos Jobim. Authentisch und emotional. Sablers Herz schlägt Brasilianisch.
