ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS to do in San Diego on a Sunday morning is a Champagne Jazz Brunch Cruise aboard Hornblower Cruises & Events. Being on the water, with all of the sights and scenery—the city’s skyline, Coronado Island, shipyards, cargo and cruise ship terminals, Naval Air Station North Island, Point Loma peninsula, waterfront parks, seagulls flying in formation and the occasional pelican diving for and scooping up fish—calms my nerves, clears my mind and sends me into a Zen state of contentment. And, when you add a buffet of eggs Benedict, carved chili-rubbed breast of turkey, biscuits and gravy, Belgian waffles, a dessert bar, Yakisoba noodle salad, chilled shrimp and other delights at the seafood station, it ups the decadence factor. My second favorite thing is Getting ready to board Inspiration Hornblower for a Champagne Jazz Brunch Cruise in San Diego, California, on Jan. 20, 2019 (left to right): Willie and Kathy Payne of Payne Pest Management; Rick Kail and Rebecca Milkey, Hornblower’s marketing director and our host; Lynn Darius and her husband, saxophonist and host of The San Diego Smooth Jazz Festival, Eric Darius; Kelly Cole, MAGIC 92.5 on-air radio personality; and Craig Collier, Smooth Jazz News operations and distribution manager

Hornblower’s three-hour, three-course dinner cruise, especially on a Friday or Saturday evening when they offer a lobster option. Dining, drinking and dancing (there is usually a DJ or live jazz performed by KUSI meteorologist/trombonist Dave Scott) on a boat while sailing around San Diego Bay brings back memories from the days when San Diego-based radio station Smooth Jazz 98.1 teamed up with record labels to co-host CD-release parties aboard Hornblower. I remember sailing around the bay and harbor while Boney James performed songs from his then-latest album, as patrons partied, mingled with the star and soaked up the scenery and sunset. These experiences epitomized the Southern California smooth jazz lifestyle, which ignited a vibe of exhilaration. And, for

The brunch was actually a celebration of the announcement that this year’s San Diego Smooth Jazz Festival would kick off on Friday, June 28, with a three-hour dinner cruise on the boat we were about to sail on—the 222-foot, three-deck, 1,200-passenger Inspiration Hornblower—the largest charter yacht in Southern California. Darius will host the evening cruise, which features live performances by flutist Althea Rene and vocalist Selina Albright.
The San Diego Smooth Jazz Festival Dinner Cruise is scheduled for Friday, June 28, 7-10 p.m., aboard Inspiration Hornblower. It boards at 6 p.m. from Pier 1, Hornblower Landing, 1800 N. Harbor Dr., San Diego, California.

So, when Rebecca Milkey, Hornblower’s director of marketing, invited me and Craig Collier ( Smooth Jazz News ’ operations and distribution manager) to a Sunday Champagne Jazz Brunch Cruise in January, I was thrilled. I was also looking forward to chatting with her about business in person (Hornblower is a regular advertiser), and her photography (she’s amazing photos). Plus, I could experience vicariously through her photos the bountiful whale and dolphin sightings she’s seen this season on

By the time 7,500 jazz fans slather on sunscreen and shimmy into their seats at the Seabreeze Jazz Festival in Panama City Beach, Florida, this month, there will be practically no signs of the devastation caused by Hurricane Michael last fall. This slice of Northwest Florida’s Gulf of Mexico coastline still boasts sugar-white sand beaches and seas that sparkle with swaying gemlike ribbons of emerald green, azure, sapphire, turquoise and teal. Nearly 30 acts are scheduled to perform over five-days––on land, at sea and upstairs at a rooftop bar––April 24-28. And, the show will go on!
Photos, top to bottom: Richard Elliot performing during the 2018 Seabreeze Jazz Festival

The festival kicks off on Wednesday with a dinner sailing at sunset featuring Brian Culbertson, followed by a lunch cruise with violinist Ken Ford on Thursday. GRAMMY-winning guitarist Norman Brown is throwing a CD-release party and luncheon on Friday at Pompano Joe’s Seafood House in the Pier Park shopping mall, where other festival performers will host nightly after-parties and jam sessions Thursday through Saturday. And, closing out the festival on Sunday, the Seabreeze All-Star After-party Jam featuring guitarist-vocalist Nick Colionne will be held at Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, also at Pier Park, and adjacent to Aaron Bessant Park, the main festival grounds. The venue, which opened in 2013, offers the conveniences jazz fans (and artists) dream of most: a state-of-the-art amphitheater, 10 acres of manicured lawn, plenty of running-water restrooms (there is rarely a long line!), free general admission parking at Pier Park, a loading dock, a green room and dressing rooms for the performers. Plus, there is ample space for a vendor village, food court and a variety of food and beverage trucks that will be staged throughout the grounds, offering adventurous dining options along with typical festival fare.
The lineup includes Jonathan Butler, Kirk Whalum, West Coast Jam (Richard Elliot, Peter White, DW3 and the West Coast Horns), Eric Darius, Jeffrey Osborne, Jazz in Pink (all-female group featuring Gail Jhonson, Mariea Antoinette, Chelsey Green and more), Sax to the Max (Michael Lington, Paul Taylor and Vincent Ingala) and The Jacksons’ 50th Anniversary Celebration, among others.
Ever wondered what alligator-on-a-stick or fried frog legs taste like? You can find out at Seabreeze. If your palate yearns more for Southern cooking, there will be booths serving up gumbo, jambalaya, po’ boy sandwiches, shrimp-and-grits, collard greens, cornbread, black-eyed peas and sweet potato pie. And, if you’re craving some down-home chitterlings, neck bones, fried okra or gizzards, there are vendors for those, too. Want to try some Caribbean island delights such as conch salad, conch fritters or oxtail and rice? They have that, as well as empanadas, pizza, fried chicken and fish, gourmet burgers, pulled pork, turkey legs, fish and shrimp tacos, and sushi, plus Cajun, Jamaican and Greek cuisine. There will also be cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, ice cream, smoothies, lemonade, beer and wine booths, and two Daiquiri Wagons.
Seabreeze has streamlined the purchasing process with a cashless system of currency through wristbands, with an RFID chip inside encoded with each customer’s ticket order and linked to funds electronically loaded with a credit card or cash. The wristbands serve as a ticket to the event, and they are the only method of payment accepted for all onsite purchases, including a subscription to Smooth Jazz News ! (See festival website for details and policies.)

“For 2019, we do have some new vendors such as Pop Fusion, which sells adult popsicles ... frozen wine-infused fruit pops,” said Mark Carter, the festival’s producer and owner of The SeabreezeWSBZ-FM-106.3 based in Destin, Florida. “Also new this year, we have Pickers Crafted Cocktails, from Nashville, Tennessee. Their fruit-based vodka cocktails are a brand-new product being unveiled at the show this year. They are sold in a can and will be available for purchase at the Seabreeze bars.”
The Seabreeze mobile app, which can be downloaded for free at the App Store or Google Play, is a great tool to manage your money. “It features the ability to add funds to your wristband from your phone, see the festival schedule, a festival map, listings of all the food and merchandise vendors complete with menu items and prices, current news about the event, live streaming of Seabreeze Radio and more,” said Carter, who produces this festival with his wife of 39 years, Renee’.

Other conveniences of this festival, which always sells out, include its close proximity to the airport (only 10 miles away) and the affordability and luxury of beachfront accommodations, many of which are across the street or down the road from the venue. “Condo rental rates range from $99 to $239 a night, depending on if they are a one-, two-or three-bedroom unit, and if they’re Gulf-front or not,” said Carter. Thankfully, local condo complexes withstood the hurricane.“Panama City Beach fared well in the storm with little to no damage continued from page 11 to the east,” said Carter. “In Panama City, cleanup still continues, and damage is visible across much of North Florida into South Georgia in the form of downed trees in the woods as well as some structural damage in some Althoughareas.”Panama City, which is over the bridge and 10 miles away, sustained substantial damage from last year’s hurricane (2.5 million cubic yards of debris has already been removed, with more to go), Panama City Beach survived mostly unscathed by Areacomparison.residentsand businesses of this tourist-driven economy are grateful to welcome visitors, especially jazz fans—who rent condos and hotel rooms, shop at their stores, eat at their restaurants, partake in local activities such as golf, fishing, parasailing and sightseeing while soaking up the Southern hospitality, culture and, of course, world-class entertainment at the 21st Annual Seabreeze Jazz Festival—all of which contribute to the rebuilding efforts.

“In 1974, I had recorded my first Burt Bacharach song. I am just realizing it was made for me. Oh my God! The first set of singles I recorded at age 13 or 12, was a Burt Bacharach song. That was really big, you know.”

Most of the year, Butler’s travels are all about touring; journeys he shares on social media. His official Facebook page contains video chats with viewers from wherever he is: at venues, in the studio rehearsing, even while waiting to catch a plane. But he also shares videos of his family roughing it at a campsite, and pictures of his newborn granddaughter, Lyric. He makes the happy moments in his life as accessible to his fans as his music.
Butler described recording the album as a chance for him to learn from the process. “I think that the way [Bacharach and David] compose and construct songs and lyrics and melodies ... It’s like going back to writing school, arranging school. It just opened a new door for me as a writer and a composer, because these songs, By Quinci LeGardye A fter 46 years in the music business and 23 albums, singersongwriter and guitarist Jonathan Butler continues to approach life with curiosity and cause. Lately, he’s been cultivating his hobbies, bonding with new additions to his family, and fueling a creative drive that he funnels into recording various styles and genres of music.
Changes in Butler’s personal life over the past few years have been woven into his music. After a divorce that brought an end to more than three decades of marriage with the mother of his children (Randy, 34, and Jodie, 31), he met violinist Nadira Kimberly. The couple, who live in the Los Angeles area, married in January. And, Butler says she inspired his latest release, Close to You, a contemporary tribute to Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

“Right then I realized this was not the season to write about me or my relationship,” Butler shared.
“It was a season for me to listen to what is in the atmosphere. The music of Burt Bacharach was what I was hearing. The next day I called my manager and told him I wanted to do a Bacharach songbook album and reinvent myself in the process.”
JONATHAN BUTLER reinvents himself with a Burt Bacharach songbook flavored with his own South African roots
Close to You wasn’t Butler’s first encounter with the Bacharach/David songbook. There’s a fun coincidence within his decision to make the album, as one of his first singles was a cover of their song “Please Stay.”
During a recent phone interview, Butler reminisced about a camping trip in an RV last summer in Lake Tahoe with his daughter, Jodie, granddaughter Avia, and his girlfriend (now wife). “I’d been [camping] when I was a kid, but this was the first time the family went camping. Oh man, they loved it! We all enjoyed it. It was such great memories.”
Coming down the line: “There’s gonna be a lot of cool music; I can feel it already. It’ll be soon. I can hear the creative things flowing right now, so I’m excited!”

He further explained, “Once I picked the songs that I felt comfortable with, [and] took the time to figure out what direction I wanted to go in terms of rhythms, the groove, the beat, what kind of sounds I wanted to create, immediately my roots came into view. I said, ‘Well, OK, nobody’s done Burt Bacharach music with a South African kind of twist to it.’”

There’s also some exciting news for fans of his original work. “As we speak right now, I definitely have several songs [and] a lot of inspiration to write the next album,” Butler announced. He didn’t say whether his new music will have another hit like “Sarah, Sarah” or “Do You Love Me,” but he does have an idea of what’s coming down the line. “There’s gonna be a lot of cool music; I can feel it already. It’ll be soon. I can hear the creative things flowing right now, so I’m excited!”

‘Walk on By’ and ‘The Look of Love’ and ‘A House Is Not a Home,’ ‘Alfie,’ [are] amazing.” Even though the songs are covers, the arrangements are pure Butler. In Close to You, he employs the South African groove that’s a connecting thread through all of his albums. When asked why it was important for him to use the traditional sounds of South Africa within his music, Butler answered, “Well, that’s who I am.”
While his next safari trip is scheduled for this October, he got a chance to return home again to perform at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival last month. He’s now back stateside for a round of collaborative shows with his fellow musician friends, performing at Earl Klugh’s Weekend of Jazz at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on April 5. Then, he’s gearing up for a tour with saxophonist Kirk Whalum, which includes a stop at the Seabreeze Jazz Festival in Panama City, Florida, on April 28.

When sharing a beachfront condo with Whalum during the Seabreeze Jazz Festival this month, Butler might cook some freshly caught fish from the emerald green waters of the Gulf of Mexico, but he won’t be hitting the links with his co-headliner because Whalum doesn’t golf. “I don’t know whether he will even try,” Butler said with a laugh.

TOURON
The Butler/Whalum tour will include a combination of musicians from each artist’s bands—John Stoddart on keyboards and vocals, Dan Lutz on bass, Marcus Finnie on drums—and 29-year-old South African guitarist Andrea Lisa. In addition to the shows themselves, these destinations give Butler a chance to explore. “I’m a real food person,” Butler said. “So, whenever I stop in a city, I get on my phone and I start wandering around the city just to see where there’s great restaurants or places I can find food, instead of just sitting around in a hotel all Ifday.”he doesn’t find his preferred Michelin-star restaurants or the locals’ favorite eatery, he can fend for himself. He has a fond memory
Another tradition Butler will not indulge during this tour is bringing his daughter, Jodie, onstage with him. She just gave birth to his second granddaughter, Lyric. At the time of the interview, Butler was excited to meet the baby, who was born a week later. As for his first granddaughter, Avia, “She’ll always be my princess, always,” Butler said sweetly. “She’s amazing. She’s 11 years old, and just completely my joy.”
Butler makes sure to stay connected to his home country, traveling there at least once a year. He continues to work with underprivileged youth through his Jonathan Butler Foundation and hosts an annual safari for his fans. In fact, the only original composition on Close to You, “Cape Town,” could be its unofficial theme song. “I actually wrote the song as a memento to my guests who’ve been traveling with me to South Africa, and who have actually been there to firsthand see my country and learn about it, so what inspired me to write the song was the safari.”

Rap artist samplers dig Jeff Lorber’s “Rain Dance” I
f there were a battle of street cred in the rap/hip-hop/R&B world between Kenny G and Jeff Lorber, Lorber would win. While G has serenaded a rap star’s wife, Lorber’s music has been sampled many times by artists of that genre.
The only photos of Kenny G serenading Kim Kardashian were taken on a cellphone and are not print quality. Please check out our Facebook page to see the image.
Even a controversial rap star can appreciate the romance a little vintage smooth jazz soprano can spark.
28 | SMOOTH JAZZ NEWS or smooth jazz fans, Kenny G has created some of the most romantic and memorable songs of our generation.
Most recently, Mariah Carey sampled that version in her latest single, “A, No, No.” Other artists who have integrated the GRAMMY-winning keyboardistproducer’s music into their compositions include Ariana Grande, Jay-Z, Erykah Badu, SWV and more.
True story: Kanye West gifts a Kenny G serenade to wife Kim Kardashian West
Lil’ Kim sampled Lorber’s song “Rain Dance” in her video for “Crush on You,” featuring Lil Cease and The Notorious B.I.G. in 1987. And, it’s been included in more songs and videos than Lorber can count. “That’s my biggest hit, and it’s the one that’s been sampled the most,” said Lorber during a phone interview from his home studio in Pacific Palisades, California.
Although the couple divorced later that year, Metheny and G did reconcile their differences and have become friends. And now, G may also become cool among the hip-hop/rap crowd. Kanye West hired the pop-jazz superstar to stand on his living room floor, surrounded by hundreds of singlerose vases, and surprise his wife, Kim Kardashian West, with a private serenade this past Valentine’s Day.
For more information on G, visit www.kennyg.com.

To comics and his critics, the multiGRAMMY-winning saxophonist is also the butt of their jokes. And, who can forget the feud ignited by guitarist Pat Metheny against the best-selling instrumentalist of all time back in 2000? However, G often playfully jumps into the jabs. During his first concert after his wife of 20 years filed for a legal separation three weeks before Valentine’s Day in 2012, G said to the audience, “I asked my wife what she wanted for Valentine’s Day this year. She said a divorce. I told her that I couldn’t afford that.”

Lorber admits that he earns more on royalties from sampling than he does from making his own albums in the current climate, where streaming and digital downloading of individual songs has nearly replaced sales of physical CDs. Although the smooth jazz demographic hasn’t embraced online music commerce as much as the younger generation, “Windfall,” the current single from Life and Times, the new Jazz Funk Soul record he made with Everette Harp and Paul Jackson Jr., has streamed more than 400,000 times since its January release. “It’s not like I’m making that much money off of this stuff,” Lorber said with a chuckle. “I mean, I can’t retire, you know, I have to keepBut,working.”knowing Lorber, he wouldn’t retire anyway. He has too much new music to create and produce, including Richard Elliot’s next record. For more information on Lorber, visit www.lorber.com
And, by the time his Kenny G Live album was released in 1989, which featured the hit single “Going Home,” G had long since left Lorber’s band and was racking up GRAMMY nominations, gold and platinum records, climbing the radio airplay charts and selling out concert venues.
It’s true.
China doesn’t honor copyright and royalty laws. If they did, G might be making more mailbox money (royalty checks) for “Going Home” than Lorber does with all of his sampling.
While saxophonists Lington and Taylor have been a popular presence on the smooth jazz scene as individual artists for some time, Ingala has been steadily ascending into the smooth jazz world since entering it at the age of 17.

“Do you know about this?” asked Lorber, who remains friends with G. “This is an amazing story. I don’t know how it started, but every department store in China, and a lot of other businesses where the public goes, they play Kenny’s song ‘Going Home’ when they want people to leave the building. That’s their way of letting people know that they should go home. And, it’s been that way for years and years and years.”
But, rappers aren’t the only connection between Lorber and G. In the early ’80s, Lorber hired an unknown saxman named Kenny Gorelick for a gig in Portland, Oregon, who remained a member of the Jeff Lorber Fusion band for nearly five years. Lorber also introduced Gorelick to Clive Davis at Arista Records, where he inked his first record deal as Kenny G in 1982. G’s self-titled album reached No. 10 on the Billboard Jazz chart.
ax to the Max, featuring Michael Lington, Paul Taylor and Vincent Ingala, is debuting at the Seabreeze Jazz Festival this month.
For more information on the Sax to the Max tour, which is also scheduled to appear at the 3rd Annual San Diego Smooth Jazz Festival on June 30, visit www.michaellington. com, http://paultaylorsax.com or www.vincentingala.com.
In an article published in The New York Times on May 10, 2014, Dan Levin wrote, “No mystery is more confounding than that of China’s most enduring case of cultural diffusion: its love affair with ‘Going Home,’ the 1989 smash-hit instrumental by the American saxophone superstar Kenny G. For years the tune, in all its seductive woodwind glory, has been a staple of Chinese society. Every day, ‘Going Home’ is piped into shopping malls, schools, train stations and fitness centers as a signal to the public that it is time, indeed, to go Toohome.”bad
Shortly after graduating from high school, the multiinstrumentalist-vocalist was named Smooth Jazz News’ 2011 Debut Artist of the Year. Soon after, he was packing his bags (and a passport) to perform on the Dave Koz & Friends at Sea full-ship charter sailing to Alaska. At 26, Ingala now has a manager, a booking agent, a record deal and is co-headlining on a national tour.

And, by his fourth release, Duotones, in ’86, he soared on a platinumselling trajectory, with more than 5 million units sold of that title alone.
It seems you’ve gone quite awhile with being unrecognized for your efforts, but don’t let this get you down. Continue with all your good work, and soon the rewards will be coming your way. A new partnership may yield some amazing results.
In her memoir, Dorothy Carvello tells tales of her life in the maledominated music business. She has tons of stories, beginning with her position as secretary to Ahmet Ertegun, co-founder of Atlantic Records. Through him, she learned to navigate the often-tricky world of music.Shehad a strange relationship with Ertegun, who was wildly extravagant in his personal life and almost constantly sexually inappropriate and harassing. His sexual exploits were legendary. Though he was so obviously out of control, she somehow developed a loyalty to However, him.she felt she was better suited to work in the A&R (artists and repertoire) department, which was responsible for talentscouting and overseeing the artistic development of recording artists and songwriters. She became obsessed with securing a job as an A&R executive. With a good ear for sensing a hit and the potential future success of a band, she demonstrated such skills with the band Skid Row by guiding the existing A&R group into signing them.

Some relationship problems flare up this month. There has been a long-standing issue that has caused a severe source of discord. Now is the time to keep your temper under control, and initiate a calm and caring conversation to resolve the issue.
“Despite the mythological notion of A&R people stumbling on some unknown act at a nightclub, that wasn’t how it happened when I started my career,” Carvello writes. “Rather, we’d get tips about bands through people we knew and go see them at specially arranged shows.”

Eventually, she became the first female A&R executive for Atlantic, but the politics at that level of management were intense, often backbiting and misogynistic. She also quickly learned how record companies denied artists their fair share of royalties using various methods, usually defended by the free-goods clause, which was part of almost every contract an artist signed. Cut-outs, cleans and overruns were tactics used to skim money that should have gone to artists, according to Carvello. They made even more money when the CD format came out. And, the advent of MTV proved a huge asset in promoting groups. She moved on and hustled to work for other record companies, including RCA, Relativity, Giant and Columbia. The job always seemed precarious, as the machinations of various honchos continuously changed the landscape. The advent of MP3 technology brought stunning change to the industry, and even the Napster court case couldn’t stop the development of streaming. The cat was out of the bag. Record companies found it harder to skim royalties from the artists.
