There was one in Fresno at a riverfront ranch; another in Palm Springs at a sacred ancestral Indian canyon; and, amid gardens and Spanish architecture, at the historic Mission San Juan Capistrano, among many others. Local smooth jazz radio stations sponsored most of these events: the largest one was Smooth Jazz 98.1 KiFM’s annual Anniversary Festival held in San Diego over Memorial Day weekend. One of its many incarnations included a weekend of festivities starting on Friday night at one of the newest downtown hotels, the then-recently constructed waterfront San Diego Convention Center. Sunday brunch in the ballroom at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina, and a buffet of concerts outside in a large tent on its Harbor Island parking lot, capped off an outing that epitomized the smooth jazz lifestyle.
outdoor jazz festival season. You could jet off to Hawaii for a weekend under the palm trees at the Maui Music Festival or choose the serenity of Jazz on the Rocks in Sedona, Arizona, surrounded by multi-hued stone formations and the bristling forest of pinnacles and spires. There were more festivals happening within those 31 days nationwide than in any other month. However, the most action was happening in Southern California, where genre enthusiasts had more choices of events than they had the time to indulge them.

More than a decade before its demise in 2012, KiFM’s management moved its “Thank you to our listeners” party to San Diego’s historic Gaslamp Quarter and scaled it back to a one-day bash. Still, more than 10,000 people flocked to the downtown streets, where they stood and watched headliners perform on two main outdoor stages. Local and up-and-coming acts entertained smaller crowds inside dozens of clubs and restaurants, all contained within four city blocks. But, if you wanted to rest your sore feet and soothe your sunburned shoulders in one of these venues, you’d have to arrive early before it became standingroom-only.Thismonth, Leonard Thompson of M.A.N.D.A.T.E. Heard, who goes by the name Fanatic, is a music industry veteran and has worked with Beyoncé, Boyz II Men, Will Smith, the late Michael Jackson and many others. He explained the instant allure of Lorber’s now classic cash cow. “As soon as you put the needle down on that song, those first hits that come in that record just automatically grab you,” said Fanatic. “And, to this day, when I’m in a party, and a DJ plays that record, the second they hear those blasts on the keyboard and the horns, everybody immediately erupts and screams, and then they start running to the dance floor.”
The keyboardist-producer’s compositions are a hot hip-hop commodity

JEFFLORBER
does Jeff Lorber have? “Oh, a lot, man,” said the GRAMMY-winning producer during a phone interview from his home in Pacific Palisades, California. “If you want, I could walk around really fast and try to count them. Do you want me to do that?” he asked. “I’m in my bedroom, there’s three here. There’s two in my living room…” The call dropped as he walked into his studio. He called back to report he had 17 total, including an acoustic piano, a Fender Rhodes and a Minimoog. These are the three primary “work horses” he uses to compose music, some of which has unintentionally become part of several hip-hop hits. For decades, rappers such as Jay-Z and Nelly have incorporated Lorber-penned songs in their beats. But, in 1997, when Lil’ Kim’s video for “Crush on You,” featuring Lil Cease and The Notorious B.I.G., played on MTV and included a sample of Lorber’s song “Rain Dance,” that’s when his street cred hit the high notes. Ariana Grande, Ja Rule, Tha Dogg Pound, SWV, Erykah Badu and more have since sampled that “Crush on You” version. This has created a significant side business for the Cheltenham, Pennsylvania, native who is best known as a pioneer in the smooth jazz and fusion movement. But Lorber readily credits Andreao Heard, the “Crush on You” producer, for his sampling career with hip-hop and rap legends.

HOW MANY KEYBOARDS
“He was a big, big fan of jazz and of old-school R&B,” said Lorber. “He knew my album Water Signs, which came out in 1980 and had ‘Rain Dance’ on it, and he knew that would be a cool song to turn into a rap. So, it was really him that had the vision and the ability to also present it to Notorious B.I.G. and Lil’ Kim.”
Lorber thinks the song was his most successful because, “It was a little bit jazzy, but it was very funky and appealing and slightly harmonically adventurous, but not so much that it would turn peopleTheoff.”most recent sampling of the “Crush on You” rendition of “Rain Dance” is on Mariah Carey’s single “A No No” from her 15th studio album, Caution, which was released in November. And, there has been plenty of buzz about a remix featuring Cardi B and Kim,
“Older musicians get the new technology, and they always try to show you how they’re in the loop with it,” Fanatic said. “But when I got with Jeff, I was like, ‘Forget the new stuff, bring out all those vintage keyboards.’”

Fanatic hopes that Lorber will produce his next record. Although it won’t be as convenient of a drive to Lorber’s studio because, after a seven-year stint in Los Angeles, Fanatic recently moved back to his hometown of Greensboro, North Carolina, to musicartistshelpsaCulturePushers.org,launchnonprofitthatunderservednavigatetheindustry.
“Really? Oh, wow, I like that! That’s really cool!” said Lorber. He then drifted off into silence before resuming the interview. “Hey I’m reading something about this [Mariah Carey] remix thing,” he said while searching the internet. He found a video on YouTube, but it turned out to be a mashup of Carey, Cardi and Kim created by a fan site. If the remix with that trio of music royalty was ever officially released, Lorber would also benefit in the form of “mailbox money” (i.e. royalty checks). In such a case, he might need to search the internet for a bigger mailbox.

Then, suddenly, on March 8, Carey released an “A No No” video, shot on a subway car in all her Mimi fabulousness, glittering in diamonds, a sparkly dress and pink furry coat (among other wardrobe changes), with dancers, and cameos with her boyfriend Brian Tanaka, her kids, twins Moroccan and Monroe, but no Cardi or Kim.

No doubt Lorber’s prized possession––a Solid State Logic SSL mixing board that he bought from The Beatles’ producer Sir George Martin––comes in handy for those jam sessions.
But, that disparity doesn’t dampen Lorber’s creativity or drive. He still strives for a unique sound whether he’s writing songs for his own records or producing for myriad clients, including Richard Elliot’s upcoming CD.
Although this new version doesn’t have the kind of star power Carey fans had dreamed of, Lorber keeps raking in the royalties for the use of his sample. Lorber’s revenue stream from sampling has eclipsed his income from record sales. His last Jeff Lorber Fusion record, Prototype, which won him the 2018 Best Contemporary Instrumental Album GRAMMY (his first win after six previous nominations) or the latest Jazz Funk Soul (Lorber, Everette Harp and Paul Jackson Jr.) album, Life and Times, didn’t earn as much as his royalties. However, the first single on Life and Times, appropriately titled “Windfall,” has racked up nearly 500,000 streams since its January release.
Norman Brown who both teased on their social media that they would be interested. However, Lorber, who is old enough to collect Social Security, but doesn’t look it, wasn’t aware of those rumors during our February interview.
The following Friday, a remix of “A No No” featuring British rapper Stefflon Don, sprung up on streaming services. A week later, a new video featuring Don was released, dashing all hopes of a Cardi-Kim remix.
“For me, and I think it’s true for all musicians that are writers and record makers, you look for inspiration wherever you can find it. Whenever you hear something, whether it’s new or old, that gets you excited, it’s like ‘Wow! That’s really cool! What is that? How did they do that?’” said Lorber, who has yet to sample another artist’s music in his own compositions.

He added that his new perspective on his life and work has brought him a new level of peace. “The key thing for me is I’m more relaxed. I’m at a great point in my life right now where I have total control of my career. I have good health, my family is doing well, and I’m blessed to still have a thriving musical career that’s actually stronger than it’s ever been. So, I’m in a good place, and that’s reflective in writing, production, doing shows and playing the horn.

GERALD
“I’m very content,” the gracious and engaging Albright said recently via phone while driving near his home in Colorado. “I’ve learned a lot of lessons throughout those three-plus decades. And, about three years ago, I did a total assessment of my career, life and well-being. I found out I could effectively streamline things and still have a very effective career. When I found that out, it just opened up all kinds of doors of creativity.”
With 19 studio albums in his catalog, the 61-year-old has found the sweet spot in life, a place that has transformed his wellbeing and outlook on his work.
After three decades of making music as a professional, renowned jazz saxophonist Gerald Albright has learned a great deal about his craft, the music business and, most importantly, himself. Like most veteran musicians who have deservedly earned career success, Albright understands that having a satisfying and fulfilling personal life is just as important as making music. When it comes to playing his horn, Albright is still at the top of his game, but he’s not totally consumed by his art like he was when he was a young player trying to claim his place at the table while achieving his dreams. Last year, he celebrated his 30th year as a recording artist with the release of 30 , a collection of newly recorded versions of some of his finest songs. And, he continues to be a top concert draw on the smooth jazz circuit.

continued on page 16 ALBRIGHT
Another aspect of this shift was Albright’s decision to take over control of his career and manage himself. It’s a move he believes brings him greater flexibility as an artist as well as a firmer grip on his direction. “I’ve been preparing to manage throughout my life,” he said. “I had three managers over the course of my career, so I’ve had a three-decade internship because after so long of watching what they do with deals and figuring out what things work and what things don’t, you get a good sense of what is best for Takingyourself.”the reins also allows him to prioritize his life while he continues to tour and record. He is also a dedicated husband to his wife of 38 years, Glynis, and a proud father. “My biggest accomplishment has been the husband and father of this family,” Albright said. “That is my mission on this planet, and I’ve been so honored to do that since the kids were born. We are a very close family. Geographically we are not close because as kids grow up, they move out of town and find themselves, but in terms of the spirit of the family, togetherness and the love, we are close.”
“We did a Christmas tour last year––we call it the Albright Family Christmas tour. It was just Selina and myself, and we intend to augment that as we get more popularity. People really enjoyed the father-daughter camaraderie onstage, and Selina really brings it. She doesn’t have to rely on nepotism because she really works. Of course, the connection has helped to a degree, but her success is herAlbright’sown.” son, Brandon, is a cinematographer who is also setting down a solid foundation for career success. “He went to the Art Institute of Colorado and got his bachelor’s in digital media and digital editing. He’s been working for different companies and established his own company, where he has private clients he does film shoots or editing for, that’s called Snow Desert Productions,” Albright explained. “He’s doing his thing, and I’m very proud of him,Thetoo.”grind of being a musician––recording, touring, producing, writing––can be demanding, and it’s vitally important for all artists to find a refuge from the treadmill. For the South Central Los Angeles native, golf provides a safe haven from the industry.
His daughter, Selina Albright, has been making inroads as a vocalist, as she establishes her own name in the jazz-pop world. Dad has taken great interest in her career and helped her find her footing. “A few years ago, Selina came to me and said ‘Dad, you know I want to pursue music.’ So, I helped her work on demos and songwriting, and now she has her own record company, First Choice Music.
“She pretty much has the same business model as I have, so she’s self-managed. She has a booking agent and does her gigs. Sometimes we do gigs together.
“I have three divisions in my life: family, music and golf. In that order,” Albright said with a small laugh. “Golf is very important to me. When I’m jet setting in the fast lane, doing cruises and gigs, and traveling all over, it’s nice to have that five hours of just-me time where you are out in the wilderness and wildlife, and it’s just you and that ball, and you are just competing against yourself basically to win the game.
“In Colorado, where I live, just south of Denver, there are scenic courses––you can be out with elk and deer, among other animals. It’s like heaven because it’s so calming. I enjoy that and the networking aspect because you never know who you are going to golf with.

MAY 2019 | 15 I’m able to be one with my fans and those who come to my shows. I’m more interactive on the internet. My 60s are the best part of my life.”
Albright still keeps a busy schedule with music and will be heading out this summer on the Dave Koz & Friends Summer Horns tour
“For artists who have been friends a long time, it allows us to get one or maybe two weeks to catch up with one another because we’re usually out doing our own things,” he said.
Among Albright’s most fruitful endeavors outside of the recording industry is his collaboration with Cannonball Musical Instruments. He has a signature line of saxophones and has become a crucial endorser for the company. It’s a relationship he cherishes. “It is one of the most unique and thriving relationships I’ve ever had in my life,” he said. “I met Tevis and Sheryl Laukat, the owners of the company, at the NAMM [National Association of Music Merchants] show several years ago—maybe 15 or 16 years. “I was leaving the Anaheim Convention Center, and Tevis spotted me and stopped me. He introduced himself to ask if I wanted to try the horns. I did, and loved them. They played very good, so he said ‘Do you want a horn?’ And, I said, ‘Well, if you are giving horns away, sure,’” Albright recalled with a hearty laugh. “So, he gave me a horn, which I played for a long time. I was initially an endorser, and then the relationship deepened, so I said, ‘Why not do a signature Gerald Albright horn?’ They asked me how I wanted the horn to sound, what type of design, how did I want it to look, and what type of materials I wanted it to be made of. We developed what’s called the GA5 horn, which is the horn we have been selling for many years. It’s been very successful. I have an alto, tenor and soprano. The friendship and collaboration are wonderfully genuine and honest.”
“Cruises are the upscale way for jazz lovers to come in contact with their favorite artists. The concept is people pay a lot of money to sail for seven or eight days, but they also get to mingle with the artists, maybe have lunch or dinner, where they are at one with the artist for Q&A sessions or signings, and I enjoy that immensely.”
“Early on in my career, whenever I had writer’s block, which didn’t happen too often, I would keep pressing and pressing for ideas until I finally got something, Now, if I have writer’s block or no ideas, I’ll go away from the studio, golf or do a power walk, and when I come back I have a plethora of ideas. I’m not so regimented anymore where I think I have to do this today. It must get done. I just let it flow now. The best ideas come when you allow the creativity to take its course.”
“This will be our third go-round,” he said. “It will be myself, Dave Koz, Aubrey Logan, Rick Braun, and this year we’re adding a new twist, as we’re bringing Kenny Lattimore, the great vocalist. He’ll be bringing a vocal aspect to it. The combination of horns and vocals will be a nice blend. We start rehearsals in July and start a 25-city tour. The lion’s share of the show will be what we’ve done, but with Kenny, it will be different. We may employ two or three songs we didn’t do on the last tour to keep things fresh.”
After three decades, Albright believes there’s plenty of music still to be made, and he anticipates many years of recording because his creative fires still burn bright.
“I feel I’m at my best right now,” he said. “I have 19 records to my credit, and there will be plenty more.
“It’s a nice fraternity. On every cruise, the list changes. On this cruise, I spent time with BeBe Winans, who sang on my very first record in 1987. I rarely see BeBe because he’s on the gospel side of things, and I’m on the contemporary jazz side, but here we were breaking bread together and seeing other artists’ shows. It was great to have quality time with him, and now as a result, we are talking about doing things together. So it’s a cool thing all around.”

MAY 2019 | 27 and when I read about the Mallorca Smooth Jazz Festival, I thought it would be an amazing experience to listen to my favorite music on an island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea,” said Cassandra Waller, who, along with her partner Terry Ward, had been looking for a unique cultural experience. “This was the most fun I’ve had at a smooth jazz festival,” added the 55-year-old Monterey, California, resident, who has been to hundreds of festivals in the United States, but cited this April 2018 trip as her first festival abroad. Tap your finger on a spinning globe, and wherever it lands, you’ll most likely find a prime jazz festival. Several genre stars and festival promoters have even taken their landbased entertainment, and eager audiences, out to sea. These jazz-themed cruises have become so popular that most are booked through 2020. Both weeks on the Dave Koz & Friends at Sea full-ship charters are sold-out, as well as the eightnight Capital Jazz SuperCruise. The first of two back-to-back sailings on Rick Braun’s European River Cruise Getaway is sold out, with a few cabins left on his week-2 voyage. But all of them offer Travel-hungrywait-lists.smooth jazz fans can still combine a trip to Europe with their musical passion, thanks to Christian Bössner, a German-based concert promoter who produces the Mallorca Smooth Jazz Festival and the Algarve Smooth Jazz Festival with his wife, Sandra.
Waller and 65-year-old Ward had such great memories from their time in Mallorca, that when they were in London later that year, they spontaneously flew to Portugal with friends to attend the Algarve Smooth Jazz Festival.
“The resort venue is a short walk from your hotel suite. It has an intimate setting for concerts, a delightful buffet restaurant, performances by the pool, and a lounge for the nightly after-parties,” Waller explained, adding that she appreciated the unique concert venues, including a quaint indoor amphitheater and several cultural sites on the island.
“It was also a wonderful experience meeting new friends from all over the world––Australia, Germany, the U.K., Africa, France, Italy and the U.S.”

“I would say 50 percent of the festivals’ newbie-guests were from North America in the past few years,” said 38-year-old Bössner via email recently. “The word-of-mouth promotion is in full swing. Returning U.S. guests bring their friends, and it’s becoming more and more every festival.”

Eleven years and 22 successful festivals later, producing unique smooth jazz events is Bössner’s full-time job. Aside from the artists and the type of music they play, the experiences he offers are distinctive from the festivals most American fans are used to. While stateside festivals typically sell thousands of tickets to a single event, Bössner caps capacity at around 600 guests. “We focus on boutique events offering a boutique experience,” he said. “That means we’re a
Bössner wasn’t yet born when Richard Elliot, one of the headliners for this month’s Mallorca Smooth Jazz Festival, was playing sax in Tower of Power before launching his solo career. But a family friend introduced him to the genre and shared his dream of bringing a festival to Europe.
The success of Bössner’s festivals relies on this type of passion from American smooth jazz fans, as it is still not a well-known genre in Europe. “The typical [European] response is ‘Smooth jazz? Oh, I don’t like jazz.’ Or, ‘Smooth jazz? Well, that’s not real Jazz’,” he said. “We have to admit, in the beginning, Sandra and I did not differ from a lot of other Europeans. We had no idea that something like smooth jazz even existed. Of course, we knew Sade and Candy Dulfer. And, of course, we had heard of names like Grover Washington Jr. or George Benson before. But that was all.”

“Having been a young event organizer looking for a chance to realize my own conceptual ideas and my intention to build something new and unique, I teamed up with him to establish an annual smooth jazz event in Europe. We announced the festival premiere in Bregenz, Austria, at Lake Constance back in 2008,” said Bössner, who was only 27 at that time. The event successfully attracted guests from all over Europe, and the feedback was that it had been an exceptional experience. But it didn’t pencil out financially, and their partner left the company. “For Sandra and me, already having put our hearts and souls into this project, giving up was no option,” said Bössner. “We improved our concept and evolved from a pure concert organizer to a music travel organizer.”

“We don’t just organize a bunch of concerts at some place; we produce a great time at a great place and bring together great people from all over the world to share a unique smooth jazz experience. It’s a bit like Woodstock-goes-smooth jazz.”

“I wanted to see how smooth jazz was represented to others outside of the U.S., and after attending both festivals, I realize smooth jazz belongs to the world.”
In the fall, the fourth annual Algarve Smooth Jazz Festival, scheduled for Oct. 1-6, will move to a new venue at the Pine Cliffs Resort in Albufeira, Algarve, Portugal. The five-star seafront resort sits atop red cliffs overlooking the Praia da Falésia
“The hosts, Christian and Sandra, made you feel as if you were part of a grand event throughout Europe. It’s the perfect vacation,” said Ward, who plans to return to the Mallorca Smooth Jazz Festival this month with Waller.
“We’re a small crowd of like-minded people from over 25 different countries per festival, coming together to enjoy smooth jazz in an award-winning holiday setting.”
MAY 2019 | 29 small crowd of like-minded people from over 25 different countries per festival, coming together to enjoy smooth jazz in an awardwinning holiday setting. Our festivals take place in a hotel resort that is also the venue. The artists and musicians are within your reach. They stay in the same hotel, hang at the same bars and eat in the same restaurants. It’s like a cruise on land.”

This year’s Mallorca Smooth Jazz Festival is scheduled for May 13-19, and will be held at the five-star Protur Biomar Gran Hotel & Spa in Sa Coma, Mallorca, Spain. The eighth annual event includes a welcome dinner with the artists, a morning boat trip and show, poolside shows, live artist interviews, after-show parties and an off-site concert featuring Pieces of a Dream performing at Església Nova, an unfinished, historic, open-air church in nearby Son Servera. A bus trip to a traditional Mallorcan bodega and tours of local attractions can also be booked as optional excursions.
“Webeach.don’t just organize a bunch of concerts at some place; we produce a great time at a great place and bring together great people from all over the world to share a unique smooth jazz experience. It’s a bit like Woodstock-goes-smooth jazz,” said Bössner.

In his forward, author David Browne poses the question, “How could a group so identified with harmony fall into such regular discord and disarray?” And, why did fans still care? In this well-written history, we are treated to the story of the creation and multiple re-creations of one of rock ‘n’ roll’s most famous bands, which began 50 years ago. Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and David Crosby were the original members of a group with no name at the outset of their work together. Each brought talent, ambition and some song ideas together after realizing they had a special knack of harmonizing with each other. When the young musicians from Buffalo Springfield, the Hollies and the Byrds got together, they became the first “supergroup” of rock ‘n’ roll. By the time Neil Young became the fourth member of the group, they were all stars.

Cancer June 22 - July 22
Pisces Feb. 19 - March 20 You’ve had to clean up some issues made by coworkers. This month would be a good time to educate them so that the mistakes will no longer occur. Otherwise, you will be playing clean-up from now on. You’ve got the smarts. Share them.
Stephen Stills was the de facto leader during the recording of their first album, and his prodigious work ethic infected the others. His role of leader did not last after the first album was completed. The work of the three original members created such a buzz that they were destined to become a hit. They were a trio for a very brief time; then Young, who was also previously with Buffalo Springfield, came in to complete the band. Their second album, Déjà Vu, with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young was another hit. When they began being hailed as the American Beatles, that’s when things started to fall apart. The personalities of these musicians could not blend for long. Immediately after the tour, the each began new projects individually. All of the members made solos albums and continued to write songs, some of which were comments on their fellow band members. Their excessive lifestyles, the need for cash, and personal problems left them often trying to get together to make something happen again. Crosby and Nash, or Crosby, Nash and Stills or any other grouping could not last for long. Their huge early success made other successful works always seem somehow less. They tried doing other tours, including an outdoor arena-type tour that ended badly. While on that tour, Young decided he was done, and he simply left in the middle of it. Young was famous for walking out when he felt like it, leaving the band to scramble for a replacement. While they went through their many permutations, times were changing. The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac began their reign as the most popular groups. Then music changed more with the advent of punk. Technical advancements were happening as well. Young was advanced in his use of tech compared to others, which was reflected in some of their performances. Still, they continued to reunite for brief moments. And, fans still seemed to yearn for the beautiful, hopeful harmonies they knew were possible.
This is a good month to start paying it forward. You’ve been the beneficiary of some kindnesses and considerations. Now is the time for you to help others in ways great and small. You know so many who would appreciate the support.
