We established ECOLight over five years ago with one great objective in mind: to introduce businesses across New Zealand, and the South Pacific, to the massive benefits the use of commercial and industrial LED lighting brings.

Spencer Winn, Managing Director of TransNet NZ Ltd. ECOLight is a division of TransNet NZ, a leading supplier to the power industry in the Pacific.

In that time, we’ve sourced, trialled and developed product, sought its independent certification, and installed our high-output LED solutions in many kinds of companies and types of industries, and councils. And we’ve had excellent results. Working with our clients, we’ve transformed their workplaces, at the same time reducing their power costs and the impact their businesses have on the environment.

Peter McGill, General Manager. Peter joined ECOLight from Tonga Power. As CEO of that company, he spearheaded a project that introduced LED street lighting to the island nation, and investigated the enormous potential for energy savings of LED technology.

Our team of technical engineers are passionate about custom-developing smart LED solutions that will work for your industry, your business needs and your workplaces.

Glenn Inkster, Sales. Arguably New Zealand’s most passionate advocate for LED, Glenn is an experienced commercial and industrial lighting expert with many installations to his name. With each client, his first focus is to create an optimal lighting plan, then develop fitting solutions to transform the working environment, all with the highest possible savings.

Within eight years, over 60 percent of the world’s lighting will be LED – and for all the right reasons. The shift is inevitable. We’d be delighted to talk to you about the lighting needs of your business and to help you as you switch to the advantages of LED lighting.

Gareth Reid, Key Account Manager. Gareth joined ECOLight after a stint working for a Dubai company that specialises in creating dynamic lighting effects on building facades – at considerable expense! He came to ECOLight because he believes LED is the way of the future – and because he wanted to be part of a progressive, expert organisation. Phillip Hogg, Applications Engineer. Phillip is the team ‘whizz’ at programming, controls and electronics. He provides technical support for new clients, a role he relishes, and is also responsible for investigating lighting innovations from overseas, picking the best available, and developing them to suit New Zealand standards. Joe Ranzinger, Technical Support Engineer. Joe’s strength is the development of lighting plans, so he is a familiar figure onsite, quantifying the spaces and taking the necessary light readings. He gets a buzz in finding the best solution for each customer and will play with different software options to achieve the highest savings. ‘It’s an art and a science,’ he says.

THE BIG 3 BENEFITS OF LED 1. HUGE SAVINGS - energy & maintenance costs

LED’s are programmable so you save money by having the lights on only when you need them, and at the level you need. Energy efficiency- up to 80% energy saving vs traditional halogen lights. Long lifespan up to 50,000 hours, or approximately 10 years. VERY robust fittings and VERY low maintenance. Lower operating temperatures- LED lights don’t use power to heat up like traditional halogens.

2. BETTER ILLUMINATION & CLARITY For product identification. For Health and Safety. Safer, cleaner light. Improved security, and CCTV camera clarity. Instantaneous light - no waiting to warm up.

3. ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY

No hazardous materials including mercury or lead. Recyclable. LED’s at full market penetration could eliminate lighting as a major source of Co₂.

4

LED’S ARE EXPECTED TO REACH A GLOBAL PENETRATION OF

Leading the LED REVOLUTION

64% OVER THE NEXT 8 YEARS

The words of a 2012 report by The Climate Group, an independent, non-profit organisation, are unequivocal: ‘LEDs are bringing a lighting revolution to our cities not seen since the days of Thomas Edison. The quantum dynamics that create light in the LED semiconductor represent as much of a technology step change as the move from candles to incandescent lamps in the 19th century.’

There are several reasons for this. Compared to conventional lights, LEDs use less power for the same output light. As an example, a 400W metal halide light can be replaced by a 140W LED, a saving in itself. LEDs are also much cooler. An incandescent bulb converts just five percent of the energy it uses into visible light, while the rest becomes heat. For businesses that run a cooling system, the maths is simple: every watt saved by replacing traditional lighting with LEDs saves an equivalent wattage in air conditioning.

Unbelievably, the first commercially available incandescent light bulb had a life of just 13-and-a-half hours. Fast-forward now 133 years, and the latest LED bulbs can last up to 20 years while using a mere fraction of the power. These technological advances bring with them some serious savings, both financial and environmental, and this is the message that ECOLight is spreading to businesses around New Zealand and beyond.

A further advantage of LED lights is their construction. Whereas traditional halogen lights contain ‘nasties’ like lead and mercury, LEDS use electronic chips that are also easily disposed of or recycled – at mere 10-year intervals. Customarily, large companies running old-tech lights replace them every two to three years and require help from special waste disposal experts.

Instantly available and easily dimmed, the light from LEDs is simple to control, again benefiting the budget and environment. Take security lights, for instance. These could be set, say, to operate at 40 per cent through the night, unless triggered by sensors to ramp up to 100 per cent.

While the scientific roots of the light-emitting diode (LED) date well back into last century, only recently has LED technology reached a level where it makes such economic sense. Now, the cost of an LED system can be recouped through energy savings. Payback on LED investment for a large commercial environment using 24-hour lighting can take less than two years.

Daylight Harvesting & Dimming A key advantage of LEDs is their compatibility with smart, simple controls. Two characteristics of LEDs make this possible: they dim easily and provide instant lighting – meaning they don’t need to warm up to reach their full brightness. Because LEDs are so readily adjustable, they can effectively provide light only when you need it. This makes them ideal for implementing ‘daylight harvesting’, a strategy that uses natural light wherever possible. Only when necessary are lights used, resulting in energy savings of up to 80 per cent. A) DAYLIGHT HARVESTING: Skylights are able to provide in excess of 1000 lux most days but not when cloud cover is present, a challenge that LEDs meet according to the changing conditions. At night, when skylights play no part, a reasonable level of light is necessary from the LED system so that work tasks can be performed safely and accurately. Monitoring and managing the day’s results and energy savings can be easily achieved through intelligent power monitor systems, like TransNet’s iSpy, which you can see on page 46.

B) DIMMING: In less frequently used areas LEDs can be dimmed to a lower level. Lights can also be adjusted to remain on for as long as required in specific work areas, or programmed to ‘go off’ immediately after a section is vacated. Movement sensors can be installed and adjusted according to the level or frequency of movement. Where there is no natural daylight, lights can be completely controlled by movement.

Daylight harvesting uses PLC management control systems.

Sensors – Light / Motion MOTION SENSOR: Dual Range There are two different types of motion sensor in our range – on/off and 0-10V.

Light Setting: 0–500 lux

1. The on/off sensors are used to turn the lights on for a set time (between 8sec–12min) when movement is detected.

Range: 1–18m adjustable

2.The 0-10V sensors work directly with our dimmable lights, these are very good for when turning the lights off is not an option. When there is no movement the lights are at maximum dim, when movement is detected the lights immediately change to full brightness.

Max Load: 1200Wh

Both versions of the motion sensor have a selectable light level to optimise energy savings. Above the set light level, the lights will not change state on detection of movement. This feature is most suited in applications with high ambient light levels during the day. NOTE: This light level setting can be disabled.

LIGHT LEVEL SENSORS We have two types of light level sensors in our range, both with the same function. This range of light level sensors offers an analogue output signal depending on light level. Used to control dimming of lights these light level sensors makes any smart relay or PLC that may already be in the plant or factory into a simple, intelligent lighting controller.
