Istanbul Modern presents Brand New Films from Germany
Presenting its seventh selection of Brand New Films from Germany, Istanbul Modern Cinema, in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Istanbul and with the contributions of Cinema Sponsor Türk Tuborg A.Ş., continues to bring prominent German films to movie lovers in Istanbul.
Focusing on the physical or mental walls surrounding us, this year’s selection includes German films having received acclaim or won awards in various international festivals within the last year. This year, one of the episodes of the cult German TV series Polizeiruf 110 was directed by Christian Petzold, a leading director in recent German cinema. In this crime series, which has been broadcast since 1971, each episode treats of a separate case and different inspectors alternate in the lead role. InCircles, both directed and written by Petzold, we watch Hanns von Meuffels, a police inspector from Munich, as he tries to solve a murder case. A woman’s body buried under a pile of leaves in the woods, as if they wanted it to be discovered as quickly as possible... Lying right next to her is her dog, killed just like the victim. The melancholy familiar to us from Petzold’s feature films also prevails inCirlces. This television drama, which earned much critical acclaim in Germany, will have its first Turkish screening in the “Brand New Films from Germany” selection.
Istanbul scores best among the biggest European city destinations
A new study reveals the success of tourism in Istanbul, Turkey. The study, which analyzed 45 cities in Europe, compared the growth orientation of Europe’s major city destinations. As the short city break has been able to establish itself as the preferred holiday of choice in Europe over the last few years. The report also confirms that the upward trend remains unabated and that tourism as a whole continues to significantly outperform European economies with city tourism performing best. According to the new Roland Berger study “European City Tourism 2015”, Istanbul scores best among the biggest European city destinations. The city of Istanbul leads the cluster 1 cities, followed by Amsterdam, Paris, London and Vienna. Istanbul is also the fastest growing city in terms of overnight stays growth, followed by Berlin, Amsterdam, Hamburg and Moscow. The Roland Berger 2015 study divided the 45 cities under scrutiny into 3 clear cluster groupings. The first cluster encompassed 13 cities with more than 10 million overnight stays, the second, 17 cities with between 2 and 10 million overnight stays and the third, 15 cities with fewer than 2 million overnight stays.
Istanbul, Amsterdam, Paris, London and Vienna took the top five places in the first cluster. Worthy of note too was Berlin, which continues to show strong growth in overnight stays. Brussels, Copenhagen and Zurich followed suit in the second cluster with Dubrovnik, Luxemburg and Lausanne respectively taking the top three places in the third and final cluster. The evaluation model used by the study team also favored those cities demonstrating clear growth in the categories overnight stays and bed capacities as well as measuring the received revenue per available room. Vladimir Preveden, Partner at Roland Berger and author of the study says, “After our first study conducted in 2011, Istanbul has experienced dramatic levels of growth in two key areas, namely in the increase in overnight stays as well as in the growth of bed capacities.” The British and French capitals continue to lead the top cluster in terms of the total number of overnight stays in 2014. The French capital demonstrated a high level of flight accessibility (only being surpassed by London) and high figures for value creation as measured by the achieved revenue per available room – due in part to the continued popularity of Paris as the leading congress location among the first cluster cities. The same factor contributed as well to Brussels’ success at the head of the second cluster. Excellent accessibility by plane and strong growth in bed capacity were also major contributory factors. In the third cluster, Dubrovnik featured the strongest growth in overnight stays. “Dubrovnik has reached its limits of growth in tourism when looking at the size of the city (as indicated by the very high tourism density), and considering that ongoing growth is being driven by the unsustainably high influx of cruise ship tourists,” said Preveden.

EXPO 2016 Antalya to feature 120-meter tower
16
Turkey’s Mediterranean city of Antalya will host Expo 2016, which will attract millions of guests and visitors from all over the world. This year’s theme is “Flowers and Children,” and the construction of its symbol, the EXPO Tower, will take six months. The viewing terrace, which will accommodate restaurants and cafes, will be built on the ground and, with the help of powerful cranes, will be hoisted to a peak that stands proudly in the air like a flag 120 meters high. TACA Construction is undertaking the construction of this building that will come to symbolize EXPO 2016 and that will be achieved through a technology first of its kind in Turkey. “EXPOs are an attract millions of tourists, and each comes with its own particular symbol. For EXPO 2016 Antalya, we are proud to construct the convention center that will come to symbolize the event: the EXPO Tower. These are the projects that have been given to our care thanks to our reputation for delivering quality projects on time. We are building this 120-meter tower, which will house restaurants and viewing and recreation areas, with the help of construction technology that will be utilized in Turkey for the very first time. This technology has been used in only a handful of buildings in the world. Called the “Eiffel Tower of Turkey,” the Expo Tower will add value both to the city of Antalya and to our tourism industry. It will be a monument that befits Turkey’s first EXPO,” said Tayyar Akkurt, chairman of TACA Construction. Modelled after the Turkish peony, a plant native to Antalya, and the famous Hadrian’s Gate located in Antalya’s old town, the EXPO Tower, with a height of 120 meters, will be opened on April 23, 2016.

TILL IT’S GONE: An Exhibition on Nature and Sustainability İstanbul Modern announced its first major exhibition of 2016: “TILL IT’S GONE: An Exhibition on Nature and Sustainability”. Cosponsored by Eczacıbaşı Group and Şekerbank and with the contributions of TAV Airports Holding, the exhibition features works by twenty artists and art collectives from different corners of the world proposing different perspectives on our perception of nature and new kinds of awareness vis-à-vis our relationship with the ecosystem. Istanbul Modern brings together artists who address nature and ecology with a particular emphasis on the notion of sustainability. Curated by Çelenk Bafra and Paolo Colombo, the exhibition features paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, photographs, and moving images by Roger Ackling, Bas Jan Ader, Alper Aydın, Bingyi, Jasmin Blasco and Pico Studio, Charles A. A. Dellschau, Elmas Deniz, Mark Dion, Hamish Fulton, Rodney Graham, ikonoTV “Art Speaks Out”, Lars Jan, Mario Merz, Maro Michalakakos, Joni Mitchell, Yoko Ono, Camila Rocha, Canan Tolon, Francesco Garnier Valletti, and Pae White. Bafra and Colombo describe “TILL IT’S GONE” as “the manifestation of a yearning for nature, a livable world, and a desire for sustainable ecological balance”. The exhibition aims to reinforce humankind’s relationship with nature and the ecosystem and introduce fresh perspectives by looking at the concept of sustainability through the lens of art. Ranging from diverse periods from the nineteenth century to the present, the works in the exhibition reflect their
artists’ perception of nature and relationship with the concept of sustainability, offering interpretations of and inventive proposals for interactions between human beings and the ecosystem, and plants and animals in particular. Some of the works suggest the impossibility of solving major ecological issues, while others make proposals for safeguarding the ecosystem and the survival of humankind in harmony with it. A considerable number of the artists use nature itself as the medium for their production. The exhibition takes its title from the refrain of the 1970 song “Big Yellow Taxi” by the Canadian singer-songwriter and artist Joni Mitchell: You don’t know what you’ve got Till it’s gone The song emphasizes how we do not understand the value of nature “till it’s gone”; the exhibition likewise emphasizes nature’s indispensability for human life and what can be done before it is too late. We continue to hear different versions of this popular song, which, at the time it was released, became an environmental anthem of a generation whose awareness of the radical changes affecting the world was rapidly increasing. The curators believe that special attention should be given to artists who have brought the issue to a cultural and social turning point through the subtle interpretations they offer; therefore they dedicate “TILL IT’S GONE” to the generation of 1968 –which includes Joni Mitchell– who contributed to the development of environmental awareness, and to all artists who bring new perspectives to bear on environmental problems.

ASEAN to be marketed as a single global destination
The ten ASEAN tourism ministers collectively launched the ASEAN Tourism Strategic Plan (ATSP) 2016-2025 at the Tourism Ministers’ press conference on the 22nd January during the 35th ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) held in Manila, the Philippines. The vision of the ATSP is: ‘By 2025, ASEAN will be a quality tourism destination offering a unique, diverse ASEAN experience, and will be committed to responsible, sustainable, inclusive and balanced tourism development, so as to contribute significantly to the socio-economic wellbeing of the ASEAN people.’ In keeping with the vision, there are two main strategic objectives to be accomplished. Firstly, to enhance the competitiveness of ASEAN as a single global destination, which will include intensifying the marketing and promotion efforts to present ASEAN as a single destination, while creating unique ASEAN travel experiences and destinations. It is essential that infrastructure requirements be met adequately, which will involve expanding connectivity, upgrading standards for tourist facilities and services, as also enhancing travel facilitation and safety and security. A key factor in achieving this objective will be to attract investment in ASEAN tourism. The second challenge will be to ensure that ASEAN tourism is sustainable and inclusive. This can come about
by reinforcing local community and public-private sector participation in the tourism value chain; improving safety and security; prioritising the protection and maintenance of natural and cultural heritage and increasing the responsiveness of ASEAN tourism to environmental protection and climate change. Said the Honourable Ramon R. Jimenez, Jr, Secretary of Tourism, Philippines: “The new ASEAN Tourism Strategic Plan (ATSP) 2016 – 2025 will work towards not only the development and growth of the region’s tourism, but also in ensuring that this growth is grounded on responsible, sustainable, and inclusive tourism.” In order to achieve the above strategies seamlessly, the ASEAN tourism ministers will provide the policy framework and direction, while the NTOs will serve as the executing bodies to implement the same. It is anticipated that, if the strategic programmes and projects are fully resourced and implemented, by 2025 the GDP contribution of ASEAN tourism could potentially increase from 12% to 15%, with tourism’s share alone of total employment rising from 3.7% to 7%. It is predicted that the per capita spend by international tourists could increase from US$ 877 to US$ 1,500 even as the average length of stay of international tourist arrivals goes up from 6.3 nights to 8 nights.
Seychelles invites the world to participate its 2016 carnival

The Seychelles Tourism Board has announced that the carnival of carnivals, Carnaval International de Victoria, celebrating its sixth year will be held between 22 and 24 April 2016. The 2016 edition of the island’s Carnaval International de Victoria set to continue to bring together the different cultures and people from around the world to one place. “Nothing is more uniting, and nothing promotes social cohesion more than ‘festivals’ to which all people contribute” said Minister Alain St.Ange, the island’s Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture following discussions with Claire Holder of the Notting Hill Carnival of the UK on their participation once again. Minister St.Ange announced that the Celebration of “National Unity” will be the theme of Carnival 2016 in Seychelles. This spectacular event held over three days in the heart of the Seychelles capital Victoria was baptised under the theme ‘the melting pot of cultures’. Since 2011, the carnival has received great visibility with the representatives from top media houses coming from Europe, Middle East, Americas, Asia and the Indian Ocean. Over the past five years, the carnival has been known to be the biggest cultural manifestation in Seychelles, bringing together the best carnivals of the world to its shores such as the Brazilian group, the Notting Hill Carnival Roadshow Company of the UK , Düsseldorf carnival of Germany, the Italy Carnival, the Indonesian Carnival to name but a few. Cultural Troupes from the Community of Nations have also descended on the islands to parade alongside with delegations of the best carnivals of the world. The carnival celebrated its fifth anniversary last year where again top international dignitaries graced the three-day event with their presence. In discussions with the Seychelles Tourism Board prior to confirming the dates for the 2016 edition of the carnival Minister Alain St.Ange said that the Seychelles International Carnival should be designed to aim at the ‘spectacularisation’ of the culture and heritage of the Seychelles Islands because tourists often demand

‘authentic’ exhibitions of culture and lifestyles which are considerably different from their own. The Carnival should also aim to express and showcase the modernity of the Seychelles without any loss of the charm of its traditional values and history. “Every year we spend time searching for the Soul of Seychelles through the Eyes of Carnival. We know carnivals of festivals remain a motivation of economic activity through the cultural and artistic creations and the general impact on infrastructure provisions. We also know that during carnival time our country benefits of the visitor expenditure multiplier effect in the fields of food production, catering, hospitality, hotels, crafts and souvenir production” Minister St.Ange said adding that cultural contacts are seen to be strong drive and magnet for world peace and the perceived roles of the Seychelles in that process is set to be more appreciated as the more and more countries use the Seychelles cultural event to showcase their own culture and develop relationships with other nations from the Community of Nations. The Seychelles Carnaval International de Victoria continues to establish a close correlation between carnival attractions that bring together the arts, culture, history and heritage of Seychelles as it works in tandem with other countries who are proud of their own culture to showcase to the world media the unity through diversity and this immaterial of the colour of the skin, religious beliefs and political affiliation.

ocated in Cappadocia, one of the most out standing cultural, historical, and natural world heritage sites, Avanos has earn edits reputation as a center of pottery since the time of the Hittites. A rich history dating back to centuries ago and the traditional craft of pottery that has passed down through generation sare the unique characteristics of this old town. All in all, visitors from all parts of the world had been pointing out the lack of a museum that would display the historical development of this traditional craft. Taking this into account, we have decided to establish a museum, as part of one of our social and cultural responsibilities, to fulfill this necessity and bestow a valuable gift upon next generations. Incorporating also the contemporary and traditional art work of world-renown Turkish sculptors into our existing collection, we have been able to present the historical development of the art of ceramics. In line with these purposes, the Güray Museum was founded

in the district of Avanos on the basis of contemporary museology concepts. The museum has been constructed under ground to be adapted to the geographical and historical structure of the region. The creation of the different parts of the museum has been made by a machine named GTA 500. The construction of the project had started in 2009 and lasted 7 years until the opening in April 2014.
The museum consists of a variety of exhibition halls, recreational facilities, and other service units carved out of rocks 20m under the ground surface and spreads out over an area of 1600m². It’s the world’s first and only under ground museum of ceramics in respect to its architectural structure and concept. The museum has a rich collection of terracotta art works, as well as, small findings, and consists of three major sections. The first section is the hall where the Antique collection is

Hierapolis of which there are many interesting ruins, and is a very popular destination for a short visit. Pamukkale was formed when a spring with a high content of dissolved calcium bicarbonate cascaded over the edge of the cliff, which cooled and hardened leaving calcium deposits. This formed into natural pools, shelves and ridges, which tourists could plunge and splash in the warm water. Hotels were springing up from the 1970s to cater for the large influx of tourists, and shortly afterwards UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site. But by the 1990s, this took its toll on the state of the calcium pools and restrictions were placed on these travertine terraces. Many hotels were knocked down, visitors are only allowed on major paths around the sites, and must remove footwear to stand on the calcium deposits. This seems to have been a successful move, as the water supply is now used for preservation and some of the damaged calcium deposits have been strengthened.

Ankara the capital of Turkey is located in the centre of Anatolia province. With a known history of around 3000, Ankara has seen great heights in the past. Around 3000 years ago, the Hittites established a city by the name of Akuwash (old name for Ankara) at the intersection of two trade routes in Turkey. During its earlier phase, Ankara was ruled by Phrygians, Macedonians (under Alexander the Great), and Romans. Seljuk Turks captured the city in 1071 AD and renamed it as Enguriye. Most important moment in the history of Ankara came when Atatürk founded his provisional government here in 1920, and in 1923 when it became the

The city has seen a number of changes since then, however it has been successful enough in maintaining a fine balance between the old and the new and thereby living up to its unique identity as the “Melting Pot of East and West”. Today, Ankara is a sprawling urban mass thoroughly organized and well - planned and much European in look than most of the cities in Turkey. Its wide-open roads, large hotels, restaurants and government offices distinguish the city.
