TÜSİAD : Sustainable Tourism is Future Trend

The Mediterranean, which includes the Turkish coastline, runs the risk of being completely polluted in 100 years, says TÜSİAD Chairwoman Ümit Boyner. For Turkey to achieve a five to six percent yearly growth rate, the country needs to promote sustainable development in all areas including energy and sustainable tourism, says TÜSİAD Chairwoman Ümit Boyner. A large portion of Turkey’s tourism sector is found along its coastline and without a sustainable tourism model to protect the country’s natural environments, Turkey is jeopardizing its future for tourism, said the Turkish Industry and Business Association (TÜSİAD) “Sustainable Tourism” report. The report suggested that Turkey implement strategies like the United Nations Environment Program’s (UNEP) “Integrated Zone Management” project to promote sustainable urban planning and environment protection practices in order to beef up Turkey’s coastal tourism and ensure its future sustainability. The report also stressed that architectural projects should

take into account Turkey’s historical sites and should be built in accordance with the existing landscape, in order to protect Turkey’s cultural tourism. TÜSİAD Chairwoman Ümit Boyner, who spoke at the unveiling of the report yesterday, said the “sustainable development” was the trend of the future. She noted that if Turkey wants to achieve a five to six percent growth rate per year in the coming period, it needs to focus on finding alternative energy resources, reduce greenhouse gases and at the same time focusing on growth. As part of this effort, TÜSİAD has prepared its report on “Sustainable Tourism,” she said. Boyner said that tourism currently accounts for 9.1 percent of the global gross domestic product (GDP) of 2012 and is a market with a turnover of $6.5 trillion, employing 260 million people.“If we use these numbers as a base, we can see that the tourism sector is one of the propelling forces for global investment and employment. In ten years, we expect this number to reach $10 trillion, accounting for 10 percent of global GDP, employing 356 million people,” she said. The Mediterranean, which Turkey is a part of, runs the risk of being completely polluted in 100 years and that is why all the countries that are bordering the Mediterranean need to come up with sustainability programs and a common understanding, she noted. Boyner also said that seasonality was one of the Turkish tourism sector’s handicaps. “Tourism in Turkey take place during a certain period of the year and this has negative ramifications on the country’s economy and sustainability,” she said, stressing that the country needs an alternative tourism strategy and a government policy. She also explained that a future road map would require the close cooperation of the public and private sector in terms of strategic planning of sustainability efforts.

Turks Picked Greece for Their Summer Vacations Greece was a favorite destination this summer for Turkish tourists, as 85,450 of them traveled mostly to Greek islands, while 75,189 chose Italy. Lesbos and Chios, two of the islands closest to Turkey, were the top picks and visits were made easier this year because of a more lenient visa process by the Greek government, and the lure of inexpensive accommodations and good food.Representatives of the

Taking place in Cape Town, April 2013, the event will follow ILTM’s successful format of selecting the most discerning luxury travel agents and specialists to meet directly with Africa’s diverse range of luxury travel suppliers. Whilst the product will be totally devoted to Africa, buyers will come from it’s biggest markets around the world including USA, Brazil and Europe. Turkish Airlines will Purchase 15 New Aircraft Turkish Airlines (THY) announced this week that it will invest $3.46 billion in 15 new planes in line with plans to expand its international routes. Company officials said on Tuesday that they will purchase a total of 15 aircraft of two models -- the wide-bodied, long-range A330 and the medium-range A300 -- from French aviation giant Airbus, which plans to deliver the planes starting at the beginning of 2014. THY Chairman Hamdi Topçu said the purchase reflects the airline’s decision to rely on smaller, less-costly planes rather than transition to high-capacity aircraft like Boeing’s 747 or Airbus’s giant, twodecked A380. Topçu also framed the purchase in the context of the airline’s aggressive expansion plans, which have seen it establish hundreds of international flights to destinations in 90 countries -- primarily in Europe, Asia and Africa -- over the past decade. The airline’s rapid growth in the number of destinations it serves as well as in the size of its fleet also means that the company’s 180 planes are among the youngest in Europe, with the average age of an aircraft at just over six years. Turkish Airlines plans to add four of the new planes in 2014, six in 2015 and five in 2016.
