Aegean Carries 6.5 million Passengers in 2011 Aegean reports 2011 passenger figures with international network traffic exceeding domestic for the first time in its history. More specifically, international network passengers rose by 15%, reaching 3.52 million out of total 6.5 million passengers carried in 2011. The main feature of 2011 performance was the significant increase in activity achieved not only out of Athens Airport - where Aegean traffic also rose despite the decline in total international arrivals in Athens - but mainly out of the country’s regional airports. Aegean operated a total of 102 international routes, flying out of 6 airports in Greece (Athens, Heraklion, Rhodes, Kos, Thessaloniki and Corfu). Markets like UK, Belgium, France, Israel and Russia registered particularly high growth rates. As a result of the company’s strategic investment of operating direct international flights from/to regional airports, growth in international passengers reached 37% from/to Rhodes, 23% from/to Heraklion and 10% from/to Thessaloniki, reaching a total of 1.1 million international passengers. Mr. Dimitris Gerogiannis, Managing Director, commented, “We invest on strengthening our international presence and on supporting
the Greek tourism both in Athens and in regional airports. Within the past 6 years, we have managed to triple the number of passengers traveled on our international network, despite the tough economic environment in Greece, the sharp rise in fuel prices and the significant high airport fees and taxes in Athens determined by the Greek state. Last, we are particularly thankful and honored by the fact that our passengers have provided an important vote of confidence by selecting us as the best regional airline in Europe for 2011 through the Skytrax awards.” On the other hand, the number of passengers carried on the domestic network declined by 6% in the full year, (and by 15% in the last quarter of the year), despite AEGEAN’s promotional offers that have resulted to a 20% lower domestic average fare compared to 2007. The company also operates four Public Service Obligation routes (Athens-Sitia, Thessaloniki-Samos, Thessaloniki-Corfu and Thessaloniki-Kalamata) where it managed to increase traffic by 70% given the availability of low promotional fares and the operation of jet aircraft, despite the fact that domestic travel demand has weakened by 30% given the Greek crisis. It is highlighted that AEGEAN operates aforementioned routes without receiving any state subsidy.
Aegean Airlines to Launch Flights to Budapest
Despite the tough economic environment in Greece, AEGEAN continues to strengthen its international presence. Starting Friday, 9 March 2012, AEGEAN will offer a new direct service between Athens and the political and cultural capital of Hungary. AEGEAN will connect Athens to Budapest with 4 flights per week. The aircraft will depart every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday from Athens International Airport at 09:15 and will return from Budapest International Airport at 11:05 (local time). Dimitris Gerogiannis, Managing Director of AEGEAN stated: “We are facing a winter season with the lowest demand during Aegean Airline’s lifetime, a sharp rise in fuel prices and uncharacteristically and unnecessarily high airport fees and taxes in Athens determined by the Greek state. We have already made adjustments to our overall planning, due to low demand, but at the same remain vigilant and respond to opportunities that are compatible with our company strategy and meet the demands of the Greek tourism product.” The flights to Budapest will be operated with the brand new AIRBUS A320, with 168 seating capacity, in dual class configuration offering a full meal and an inflight entertainment system with six music channels without
extra charges. Business class passengers will be able to enjoy improved seat comfort, a choice of meals and Greek wines, as well espresso or cappuccino. The flight schedule is designed in a way so as to offer connections from/ to the rest of Greece.
Etihad Airways-airberlin Partnership
German and Austrian regulatory authorities have given their approval to the deal announced last month in which Etihad Airways increased its shareholding in airberlin to 29.21 per cent. The approved strategic partnership between the airlines will offer passengers a combined global network of 239 destinations, seamlessly connected through hubs in Abu Dhabi, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Vienna and Palma de Majorca. Already, both airlines have announced a number of joint actions, including codesharing on a number of routes on each other’s networks, integrating aspects of their frequent flyer programs, and mutual maintenance agreements in Abu Dhabi and Düsseldorf. Etihad Airways President and Chief Executive Officer, James Hogan, said: “We are delighted that all the regulatory approvals
have been concluded successfully and we can now to move forward with plans to create an outstanding offering for passengers on our combined network. “The partnership between Etihad Airways and airberlin will have a positive market impact, stimulating competition and ultimately benefiting passengers across the globe. “It is a significant milestone in our history and the first step in what will be a very positive association over the coming years.” airberlin CEO Hartmut Mehdorn said: “I am confident that this is the beginning of a very successful collaboration which will benefit the customers of both companies. It opens up unique possibilities for joint future market development and provides the prerequisite for increased synergies and cost optimisations.” Etihad Airways and airberlin group carry a combined total of more than 40 million passengers a year, operate 233 aircraft and employ 18,000 people. Lufthansa Group in 2011 with Record Passenger Figures
The airlines that make up the Lufthansa Group carried a record number of passengers in 2011. A total of 106.3 million passengers chose to fly with Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, bmi and Germanwings. This is equivalent to growth of 7.5 per cent compared with the previous year. The Group increased its capacity by 9.8 per cent overall in 2011, while its revenue seat kilometres rose by 7.0 per cent. The average passenger load factor for the aircraft correspondingly fell by
two percentage points to 77.2 per cent. The trend of decreasing sales that emerged in autumn continued in the remaining months of the year - Group-wide, it proved not possible to match the level of sales growth recorded at the beginning of the year. In the light of this development and ongoing economic uncertainty, the Passenger Airline Group plans to achieve low-level growth of 3 per cent in its available seat kilometres in the full year 2012. This will be realised by using larger aircraft and introducing the new Europa cabin on Lufthansa Passenger Airlines’ European routes. A total of 65.5 million passengers flew with Lufthansa-brand planes in 2011 - 11.1 per cent more than in the previous year. Lufthansa expanded its capacity by 11.8 per cent in the full year, while sales were up 8.8 per cent. The load factor was 2.2 percentage points down year on year, at 77.2 per cent. Hıdırlık Tower & Karaalioğlu Park
Overlooking the sea at the southern corner of the fortifications, the tower, reaching a height 14 metres, is comprised of a high fortress of square plan surmounted by a cylindrical trunk. A rectangular door on the eastern side opens into a small chamber. From existing evidence it appears that the tower was covered with a peaked roof. The reason for the tower’s construction is still subject to argument. Although it resembles Roman period mausoleums in plan, it more likely served as a lighthouse and watchtower for the harbour. Do not miss a walk through the adjacent City Park
Kesik Minaret (Truncated Minaret)
Zincirkıran and Nigar Hatun Türbesi This is a beautiful monument located in the Yivli minaret complex. It is a türbe or tomb of Seljuk type built in 1377 in the name of one Zincirkıran Mehmet Bey. The tomb of ashlar masonry construction throughout, is covered by a roof that is domed on the interior and a peaked octagon on the exterior. It contains three sarcophagi. In another türbe, different from the first in character, Nigar Hatun, the wife of Sultan Beyazid II, is buried. The tomb is dated 1502.

with its beautiful old trees. Relax with a glass of tea served from a traditional Samovar at one of the Cafes in the Park. This Minaret is especially interesting because its building history stretches all the way from the Roman to Ottoman times. Atop the 2nd century A.D. foundations of a temple of Serapis built in tholos form, is a large church constructed in the 6th century, using architectural elements from the temple. This church, destroyed during the Arab raids in the 7th century, was restored in the 9th with reinforcements and certain additions. In the Seljuk period the building was converted to a mosque
but was reverted back into a church of basilica when Antalya passed in to the hands of Peter I, the king of Cyprus, in 1361. Finally, during the reign of Beyazid I, Prince ehzade Korkut added a minaret to the south-west corner and reconverted the building into a mosque. İskele Mosque & Yacht Harbour This is a very small and pretty mosque located in the Yacht Harbour. It dates from the late 19th century and is constructed of cut stone and set on four pillars over a natural spring.

Yivli Minaret (Fluted Minaret)
This minaret has become the symbol of Antalya. It is the oldest Seljuk monument in Antalya. It was commissioned by Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I, who reigned from 1219 to 1238. The fluted body of the minaret, which rises above a square stone base to a total height of 38 metres, is decorated with dark blue and turquoise tiles. On the north side, a climb of 19 steps leads to the minaret’s balcony or erefe. The mosque adjacent to the Yivli minaret, from which it takes its name, was built in 1373 by Mubarizettin Mehmet Bey.
City Walls & Clock Tower Heading the lists of remains still standing in Antalya are its city walls. These horseshoe shaped fortifications gird the harbour and the ancient city surrounding it. They were built on 2nd century A.D. Hellenistic foundations and underwent alterations in nearly every subsequent period. From inscriptions on the walls we know that the Seljuks in particular made major changes, renovating a large section, and adding towers to bring the walls into conformity with their own concepts of military strategy. The famous Ottoman traveller Evliya Çelebi reports that when he visited Antalya in 1671 there were 80 towers along the wall, that it had a circumference of 4,400 paces, and that enclosed within it were neighbourhoods of narrow streets containing almost 3,000 houses. It is a pity that under the pressure of rapid urbanization in our day a large part of the walls and towers has been destroyed. The Clock Tower is one of the most popular parts of the old city walls and also an important landmark of Antalya.

grapes. When he saw that bunch of grapes, he said, “This may be the good thing waiting for me. O Allah, thank you!” He picked the bunch of grapes and ate it. As he looked about him, he saw a town in the distance, and he walked on to that town. When he reached the town, he was surprised to meet some old friends of his. “What are you doing here, Murat Usta?” they asked him. “I was told in a dream that there was a good thing waiting here for me. I received that, and now I shall return home”His old friends laughed and made fun of him. One of them said ,”Well, now, look at this fellow who came all the way here because of a dream he had. Back home I once had a dream that there was a second hand dealer living at arampol who had a pot of gold hidden under the stairway in his house, but I did not even pursue that, close as it was!” After hearing this, Murat Usta bade his old friends farewell and returned to arampol. When he reached his own house, immediately dug beneath the stairway, and there he found buried two pots of gold This mosque in arampol district is the largest mosque in Antalya. The area where it now stands was once occupied by coins. With some of the money from these coins, he had a mosque build. In one corner of the mosque-but no one else a business in second hand goods operated by a man named knew which cornerhe buried a quantity of gold large enough Murat Usta. This Murat Usta worked very hard, but he to build a second mosque when time had demolished the earned little more than enough to live on. He was a strictly first one. As years went on, both that mosque and the honest man, however, and he never envied the wealth off surrounding area became known as Muratpaa in honour of others. One night Murat Usta had a dream in which he was the man who had the mosque built. Much later, people who approached by a group of angels who said to him, “Murat had heard rumours of the gold buried in the mosque tried to Usta, you have a good thing waiting for you in the desert find it. One night they secretly tore out one wholecorner of of Arabia. Go there and get it.” After the morning prayers the mosque, but all they found was a note in a jar. The note of the next day, Murat Usta started to travel. And after a while he reached a place where there was a single grapevine said,”Its not with me but with the other.” And so the buried growing, and on that grapevine there was a single bunch of gold of Murat Usta was never found. Tek Kapılı Han & Vakıf Hamamı This is a very nice example of a typical “Han” (Inn) from the Ottoman period. It consists of two floors and a lovely courtyard, housing today gift and souvenir shops. The Hamam (Turkish bath) next door has been renovated recently.
Hadrian’s Gate Of the wall’s entry gates only one has survived to the present. This gate of honour, erected to commemorate Hadrian’s visit to Antalya, has an appearance typical of a roman triumphal arch, with two colonnaded facades and three entry arches rising above four pylons. The triumphal arch was a new structural form developed by Roman architects and built in honour of emperors. In the course of a successful restoration project carried out in 1959, certain architectural elements have come to light, which indicate that the monument consisted of two levels. Two towers of different construction were found. The tower on the left front of the arch belongs to the Roman era, while that one on the right, as indicated by its inscription, dates to Seljuk times.

The institute is comprised of two entirely different buildings. The first, a late example of Ottoman architecture, is a two-floor residential home with the traditional Turkish open court (avlu). eçen sene yapılan - ATF-Asya Turizm Forumunda 2012 nin ev sahibi ülkenin Endenozya olduğu açıklanınca aklımıza hemen Bali gelmişti.
