As we wrote last month, this year’s problem in tourism will be the coronavirus.

The virus, which has spread all over the world since March, is terrifying with deaths in almost every country.

In tourism, all jobs are delayed. Planes cannot fly, hotels cannot be opened, tour operators and agencies are waiting. Of course, those who work in tourism also have their most troubled days.

We are afraid that there will be major collapses in tourism this year.

Now hopes are to reduce the impact of the virus and start tourism. & In this issue, unfortunately, our news is mostly about the virus and Suat Töre generally it is sad and worrying.

Meetings take place in online platforms in our world where no tourism activities can be held.

We tried to introduce two destinations to you with positive hopes. A world wonder from Turkey, Cappadocia and Asian country of Cambodia’s coastal region that is recently becoming popular among travellers.

We suggest that you take these two destinations into your travel bucket list for your happy future travels.

Turkey news Turkey Closes Borders, Stops Flights, Restricts Travel amid Coronavirus The 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic was confirmed to have reached Turkey in March 2020, with the first case being officially confirmed on 11 March 2020. As of 1 May 2020, the total number of confirmed total cases in the country is over 122,400, of which 53,800 have recovered and 3,300 have died.

The first death due to COVID-19 in the country occurred on 15 March 2020 and by 1 April it was confirmed that COVID-19 had spread all over Turkey. On 19 April, the number of confirmed total cases in Turkey surpassed those of Iran, making it the most affected country in terms of cases in the Middle East. Turkey also surpassed China in confirmed total cases on 20 April.

On 13 March, Turkey announced its decision to stop all flights to and from Germany, France, Spain, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Sweden, Austria and the Netherlands. On 15 March, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced that all libraries in Turkey would be closed. The Ministry of the Interior announced that pavilions, discotheques, bars and night clubs would be closed temporarily starting from 16 March. On 16 March, the Turkish Directorate of Religious Affairs announced a nationwide ban on prayer gatherings in mosques, including Friday prayers, due to the pandemic. Later that day, the Ministry of the Interior also sent a notice on coronavirus precautions to the 81 provinces of Turkey, temporarily closing all public gathering places such as cafes, gyms, Internet cafés and movie theaters, except shops and restaurants not offering music, starting midnight the following day. Health Minister Fahrettin Koca announced that Egypt, Ireland, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and the UK were added to the list of countries for which the flight ban was imposed.

On 20 March, through a presidential statement, it was announced that all kinds of scientific, cultural, and artistic meetings or activities were postponed. On 21 March, barber shops, hair dressers and beauty parlours were closed. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry banned barbecuing in gardens, parks and promenades. The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure announced that flights to 46 more countries had stopped, 6 New Focus | May / June 2020

thereby cutting air transport with 68 countries in total. The Ministry of the Interior announced a total curfew for those who are over the age 65 or chronically ill. The announcement further stated that starting from midnight, restaurants, dining places and patisseries were to be closed to the public for dining in, and were only allowed to offer home delivery and take-away. Additionally, free public transportation for people over 65 was temporarily suspended in Ankara, Antalya and İzmir.

President Erdogan announced on March 27 that all international flights had been halted and intercity travel would be conducted with the permission of the governorships. He also said vehicle entry and exit to 30 metropolitan cities including the Black Sea province of Zonguldak were stopped on April 3.

On 3 April 2020, President Erdoğan announced a 15-day entry ban to the 30 provinces with metropolitan status as well as Zonguldak. lso, the curfew was extended to people younger than 20 years old. Using masks in public places became mandatory. In the late hours of 10 April, through an order issued by the Ministry of the Interior, curfews were declared for the upcoming weekend in the 30 provinces with metropolitan status and Zonguldak. On 13 April, President Erdoğan announced in an address that until further notice such curfews would be in force also during subsequent weekends.

IKSV Postpones Events in Istanbul In line with the measures taken in Turkey to prevent the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, which is described as a pandemic by the World Health Organisation, events that are organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) are postponed.

IKSV announced that all planned concerts to be held until 15 April 2020 at Salon İKSV and the 39th Istanbul Film Festival, which is scheduled to take place on 10-21 April, are postponed to a later date.

The presentations of the projects and films from Turkey and its neighboring countries participating in the Meetings on the Bridge is held online on 1417 April.

Turkey news previous editions, opened two artist films to online access every Friday in weekly periods as of 3 April. More than thirty films were made temporarily public on Istanbul Biennial’s website and İKSV’s Vimeo account for everyone to enjoy in times of social isolation necessitated by the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The online selection kicked off with two special films: the 13th Istanbul Biennial artist Basim Magdy’s 13 Essential Rules for Understanding the World and the 15th Istanbul Biennial artist Volkan Aslan’s Home Sweet Home are available to stream between 3 and 10 April.

Due to the global Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the 48th Istanbul Music Festival, scheduled to take place on 2-25 June 2020, is postponed to the second half of September 2020. New dates for the festival and further details about the programme will be announced on festival’s website and social media accounts in June.

Tickets purchased for the festival will be valid for the new concert dates.

The audience will have the right to refund or exchange their previously purchased tickets. Detailed information about the refund, exchange or support process will be announced via e-mail and also on the İKSV and Istanbul Music Festival websites in June.

Turkey’s Tourism Income Decreased in Q1 2020 Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) announced Turkey’s tourism income for the first quarter of 2020. The country’s tourism income dropped 11.4% compared to the same period last year, amid worldwide travel restrictions due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Turkey’s tourism income reached US$4 billion 101 million 206 thousand.

While 80.6% of this income (excluding GSM roaming and marina service expenditures) was obtained from foreign visitors, 19.4% was obtained from citizens resident abroad.

Visitors organize their travel individually or with a package tour. While individual expenditures constituted US$3 billion 564 million 760 thousand of the total tourism income, US$536 million 445 thousand of tourism income was obtained by package tour expenditures.

In this quarter, all expenditure types decreased compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Health expenditure decreased by 17.5%, accommodation expenditure decreased by 15.7% and international transport expenditure decreased by 12.1%. While the average expenditure per night of the foreigners who stayed overnight was $ 74, an average expenditure per night of Turkish citizens resident abroad was $ 59.

In this quarter number of departing visitors decreased by 15.1% compared to the same quarter of the previous year and declined to 5 million 639 thousand 413 persons. While 82.2% of visitors were foreign with 4 million 635 thousand 845 persons, 17.8% of them were Turkish citizens resident abroad with 1 million 3 thousand 568 persons.

The secondary purpose of visit was “visiting relatives and friends” with 21.7% and the third was “shopping” with 7.2%. Turkish citizens resident abroad visited mostly for “visiting relatives and friends” with 66.8%.

Tourism expenditure which is the expenditure of the Turkish citizens resident in Turkey and visited abroad decreased by 25.6% compared to the same quarter of the previous year and declined to $ 793 million 491 thousand. While $ 652 million 32 thousand of total expenditures were individual expenditures, $ 141 million 459 thousand of tourism expenditures were package tour expenditures. www.smpublication.com 9

Turkey news Turkey Welcomes Cruise Ship with 375 Passengers Turkey’s leading cruise port in Aegean resort town of Kuşadası on Friday, March 13 welcomed a cruise ship carrying 375 tourists. 375 passengers arrived with the Celestyal Crystal ship with a capacity of 1,200 passengers.

Tourists, mostly U.S. citizens, disembarked and visited popular tourist sites nearby such as Ephesus and the Virgin Mary’s House. Some tourists shopped in the city center.

According to media reports, all cruise passengers entering the country screened by thermal cameras to ensure their body temperatures are below 100.4℉ (38℃) and not display any symptoms of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) or any other respiratory illness. The ship left the port to continue the tour of the Greek islands in the evening.

SunExpress Begins Cargo-only Flights SunExpress, a joint venture of Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa, which halted all domestic and international flights as part of the travel restrictions to fight against the Covid-19 outbreak, began cargo flights with 18 aircraft in its fleet.

SunExpress starts its operations with a new type of cargo carrying model by utilizing the passenger cabin to maximize the capacity for cargo, SunExpress expects to be able to carry a maximum load of up to 21,700 kg by having to load up passengers seats and overhead bins, as well as under-aircraft cargo sections.

Stating that the airline has only carried cargo in the cargo section of the aircraft so far, SunExpress Deputy General Manager Ahmet Çalışkan said, “For the first time in our history, we are going to operate cargo-only flights.

We have made a total of 18 aircraft suitable for cargo use by turning passenger cabins into cargo holds without removing seats. We completed the necessary work in a short time and will carry out our cargo flights initially from Izmir and Antalya. In the next stages, we plan to operate cargo flights from other destinations according to incoming demand.”

world news UNWTO: All Destinations Worldwide Now Have COVID-19-related Travel Restrictions The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted all destinations worldwide to introduce restrictions on travel, according to new research by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). This represents the most severe restriction on international travel in history and no country has so far lifted restrictions introduced in response to the crisis.

Following up on previous research, the latest data from the United Nations specialized agency for tourism shows that 100% of destinations now have restrictions in place. Of these, 83% have had COVID-19-related restrictions in place already for four or more weeks and, as of 20 April, so far no destination has lifted them.

UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said: “Tourism has shown its commitment to putting people first. Our sector can also lead the way in driving recovery. This research on global travel restrictions will help support the timely and responsible implementation of exit strategies, allowing destinations to ease or lift travel restrictions when it is safe to do so. This way, the social and economic benefits that tourism offers can return, providing a path to sustainable recovery for both individuals and whole countries.” As well as a general overview, the UNWTO research breaks down the type of travel restrictions that have been introduced by destinations in all of the global regions, while also plotting the evolution of these restrictions since 30 January – when the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

The latest analysis shows that, of 217 destinations worldwide: • • • •

45% have totally or partially closed their borders for tourists - “Passengers are not allowed to enter” 30% have suspended totally or partially international flights - “all flights are suspended” 18% are banning the entry for passengers from specific countries of origin or passengers who have transited through specific destinations 7% are applying different measures, such as quarantine or self-isolation for 14 days and visa measures.

Against this backdrop, UNWTO has been leading calls for governments worldwide to commit to supporting tourism through this unprecedented challenge. world news GBTA Members Are Planning Their Post-Coronavirus Recovery Plans Over the past several months the world watched the global business travel industry come to a halt but according to new research issued by the Global Business Travel Association, there are signs of optimism and recovery on the horizon.

The study found that most companies are planning a recovery for 2020 with one in three planning for a recovery in three months or less.

To understand the coronavirus’s effects on business travel, GBTA conducted its sixth poll among membership on April 17-22, 2020. GBTA received responses from almost 1,600 member companies throughout the world.

“The global business travel industry remains at a standstill, but we are finally beginning to see some light at the end of this very long tunnel,” said GBTA Chief Executive Officer Scott Solombrino. “GBTA members are planning their post-coronavirus recovery plans and most expect to be operational in 2020. This is a positive sign. The majority of GBTA member companies expect domestic business travel to resume in the next 2-3 months and most expect employees will be willing to travel. We have waited a long time for there to be optimism around the pandemic in our industry, and it should continue to grow as we get closer to halting the spread of this disease.”

Among the poll’s key findings are: • Most companies are planning a recovery plan in 2020. One-third (35%) of GBTA members say they plan for their company’s post-coronavirus recovery plan in three months or less, while a quarter (27%) say they plan for a post-recovery in 6-8 months. In addition, only one in ten are planning for recovery in 2021, while one in four (28%) report they do not know.

• Among GBTA members who report their company has canceled at least some domestic business trips, six in ten (62%) say they expect domestic travel to resume in the next 2-3 months. One in five report they expect domestic travel to resume in the next 6-8 months (18%) or are unsure (19%).

• GBTA European members (74%) are more likely than members based in North America (58%) to expect domestic business travel will return in 2-3 months. In addition, members based in North America (21%) are more likely to be unsure when domestic business travel will resume compared to members based in Europe (12%).

• Eight in ten European members expect international business travel will resume in 2-3 months (33%) or 6-8 months (47%). Two-thirds of GBTA members in North America expect international travel to resume in 2-3 months (26%) or 6-8 months (38%).

• A majority of GBTA members (88%) expect employees will be willing to travel once restrictions are lifted. GBTA members from North America (90%) are more likely than members from Europe (83%) to expect their employees will be willing to travel after restrictions are lifted.

traveling for business, many information resources are perceived as being important including: a decline in new infection rates (92%), governments lifting travel restrictions or advisories (91%), guidelines or statements from public health agencies such as the WHO or CDC (90%), effective anti-viral treatments (89%), removing stay-at-home lockdowns (88%), a new Coronavirus vaccine developed and available to employees (85%), advice from a risk management firm/consultant (e.g., Worldaware or International SOS; 60%), and other companies allowing travel (49%).

One in five GBTA buyer members note their company has reduced staff or laid off (21%), furloughed (21%) or cut employee salaries (20%) as a result of the coronavirus.

GBTA supplier member optimism about the industry’s path to recovery vary. One in five (19%) say they are more optimistic than they were last week, while six in ten (57%) say they feel the same as they did last week. One-quarter (24%) feel more pessimistic about the industry’s path to recovery than they did the week prior.

GBTA supplier members note bookings from corporate customers have remained the same (41%) or decreased (49%) in the past week.

Some GBTA members report their company does allow some essential travel. Onethird (35%) say while their company has canceled or suspended all non-essential trips but allows some essential travel.

GBTA member sentiment varies concerning the impact Covid-19 has had on the industry. When asked about layoffs/furloughs in the corporate travel industry, four in ten feel the worst has already happened (42%) while an equal number feel the worst has yet to come (41%). GBTA members in North America are more likely to feel the worst has already happened when it comes to layoffs and furloughs (47%) compared to members based in Europe (30%).

There is more consensus when thinking about canceled flights, with three in four (77%) GBTA members stating the worst has already happened compared to one in ten (15%) who feel the worst is yet to come.

Six in ten (62%) GBTA members feel the worst has already happened concerning hotels suspending operations compared to one in four (26%) who feel the worst is yet to come. GBTA members based in North America (64%) are more likely to feel the worst has already happened regarding hotel suspensions compared to members based in Europe (53%).

GBTA members are more pessimistic about revenue loss for travel companies. Over half (56%) feel the worst is yet to come in terms of industry revenue loss while onethird (29%) feel the worst has already occurred.

GBTA member companies have not opened international (98%) or domestic (93%) travel as companies continue to cancel and/or suspend almost all business travel regardless of destination. In fact, almost all GBTA member companies (57%) report they have suspended or canceled all business travel across the board.

world news What “The New Normal” Will Look Like As We Start To Travel The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has outlined what the “new normal” will look like as countries begin to end their COVID-19 lockdowns and ease travel restrictions.

“Travelling in the New Normal” is part of WTTC’s plan which includes critical steps and coordinated actions, including new standards and protocols, which offer a safe and responsible road to recovery for the global Travel & Tourism sector as consumers start planning trips again.

Public-private collaboration between business and governments is vital to develop new health protocols which will form the travel experience and also provide people with strong reassurances when travelling.

WTTC says the sector will face a gradual return to travel over the coming months as a “new normal” emerges before a vaccine becomes available on a mass scale, large enough to inoculate billions of people.

Travel is likely to return first to domestic markets with staycations; then to a country’s nearest neighbours before expanding across regions, and then finally across continents to welcome the return of journeys to long-haul international destinations.

WTTC believes younger travellers in the 18-35 age group, who appear to be less vulnerable to COVID-19, may also be among the first to begin travelling once again.

Gloria Guevara, WTTC President & CEO, said: “It is vital for the survival of the Travel & Tourism sector that we work together and map out the road to recovery, through coordinated actions, and offer the reassurance people need to begin travelling once again.

“We have learned from past experiences that when the protocols from private sector are taken into account and we have a coordinated approach the recovery timeframe is significantly reduced, so the private-public sector collaboration is crucial. We should avoid new, unnecessary procedures that create bottle necks and slow down the recovery. However, a quick and effective restart of travel will only happen if governments around the world agree to a common set of health protocols developed by the private sector, such as those we’ve outlined. These must provide the reassurance travellers and authorities need, using new technology, to offer hassle-free, pre-vaccine ‘new normal’ travel in the short term.”

This includes the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the Airport Council International (ACI), Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), United States Travel Association (USTA), Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) the European Travel Commission (ETC) and the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).

To offer world-class cleanliness, improved hygiene standards and ensure guest safety, hotels are developing protocols based on learnings from offering free rooms to frontline healthcare workers during the COVID-19 crisis.

There will be new protocols for check-in involving digital technology; hand sanitiser stations at frequent points including where luggage is stored; contactless payment instead of cash; using stairs more often than lifts where the 2 meter rule can be harder to maintain; and fitness equipment being moved for greater separation among other examples.

Cruise operators will take further measures to ensure ships are free of COVID-19 including staff wearing gloves at all times which are then frequently changed; and more frequent room cleaning.

Travellers at airports will find themselves tested before they fly and upon arrival at their destination airport. They can expect to see social distancing measures at the airport and during boarding, as well as wearing masks while onboard.

Aircraft will also be subject to intensive cleansing regimes. These measures will be combined with contact-tracing, via mobile app, that will allow flights to leave airports COVID-19-free.

The protocols, which have been developed using experience from China’s initial recovery and from new successful standards used by retailers, will be fully announced in the next two weeks and shared with governments globally, so there is a coordinated approach to travelling within the COVID-19 world.

There are positive signs of the first green shoots of recovery. Research by travel data and analytics expert Cirium shows that over 30% of domestic capacity has returned to the Chinese aviation market in the last two months. Domestic flights have also resumed in some countries, such as in Vietnam between Ho Chi Minh City and Saigon, with Vietnam recording relatively few coronavirus fatalities.

Hyatt Announces Global Care & Cleanliness Commitment Hyatt announced a Global Care & Cleanliness Commitment to further enhance its operational guidance and resources around colleague and guest safety and peace of mind. The multilayered commitment builds on Hyatt’s existing rigorous protocols and will include an accreditation process by the Global Biorisk Advisory Council (GBAC) at all hotels around the world, colleague training and support resources, and a cross-functional working group of medical experts and industry professionals that will contribute to various aspects of the hotel experience.

In May 2020, Hyatt plans to introduce a GBAC STARTM accreditation through a performance-based cleaning, disinfection and infectious disease prevention program that will focus on establishing hotel environments that are sanitary, safe and healthy. GBAC is a division of ISSA, the worldwide cleaning industry association, and is composed of leaders in the area of microbial-pathogenic threat analysis and mitigation, designed specifically to deal with biological threats and real-time crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. The geological formation of the volcanic area of the Cappadocia region, started some ten million years ago.

The Erciyes, volcanoes erupted from the Miocene to the Pliocene period (two million years BC). The lava and stones that were ejected from today’s Cappadocia soil: lava on the volcano slopes, dust and ashes around the volcano, forming a 100-150 mt. deep layer, made of tuff, clay, sandstone, marl and agglomerate. The alternation of periods of calm between two eruptions and the emergence of smaller volcanoes over thousands of years generated superposed layers made of more or less compact dust.

The surface waters formed the Melendiz and Kızılırmak rivers. The wind, the frost and the sun eroded the soft layer of soil and formed small valleys.

Some layers were softer than others and thus, water penetrated deeper in the soil, leaving a harder layer on the surface. Little by little, pieces of hard rocks were separated from the plateau. The layers which were below the natural “hats” were protected and evolved at a slower pace. That is how earth pillars were formed. The shape of the earth pillars varies according to the geological nature of the “hat”

and the base which has to face erosion.

As the years go by, the “hat” can crumble or the base can get thinner and thinner, due to erosion by rain, and the “hat” falls down. Then the earth pillar is bound to disintegrate quickly.

That is why the Cappadocia landscape is instantly evolving.

Other remarkable elements can be found in Cappadocia on the sides of the valleys formed by waters.

The first signs of human presence date from the neolithic and the calcolithic periods.

Indeed, hearths, statuettes and lithic tools made of volcanic glass or bone have been found.

Hittite signs of human life have been discovered, dating from the bronz age and the Hittite period (3000-1750 BC). The soil contained gold, silver, copper but no tin. Exchange developed, with Assyrians from Mesopotamia who founded trading posts in the region. It has been established that writing existed in Cappadocia, thanks to Assyrian tablets on which you can read the different taxes paid by the traders to the Anatolian landowners, as well as the interests they received from their debtors. A new artistic trend appeared in Anatolia, as a result of cultural and religious influences from Mesopotamia.

In around 2000 BC, a people coming from Europe and passing through Caucasus settled in Anatolia. They integrated into native life. After 600 years of reign, they were defeated by the Phrygians and their empire was dismantled. Some Hittite strongholds remain in central and south-east Anatolia.

Other peoples took over the region; the Kimmers, then the Medes and the Persians who named the region “Kapatuka”, which means “Country of thoroughbred horses”. Since they worshipped Fire, the volcanoes were sacred. Alexander the Great, a Macedonian king, defeated the Persian armies in 334 and 332 BC and dismantled the Persian empire.

Then the Romans invaded the region and it became part of the Roman Empire. As it was one of the most extreme limits of the empire, they built fortifications around Kayseri and brought in their legions.

Christianity, coming from Palestine, spread in the south of Anatolia, then in Cappadocia. The first Christians emigrated to the cities and villages. They started digging the first churches and settled in the dwellings made in the rocks.

After the partition of the Roman Empire into two parts, Cappadocia, influenced by Byzantium, was often a battlefield between Sassanides and Byzantines. Under the ruling of Leon III, the idolatry of icons was banned. In Cappadocia, this rule lasted 100 years, but it was hardly respected because the people who worshipped icons found refuge in

In the 11th century, the Turkish Seljoukides, led by their chief Alparslan, invaded Anatolia and defeated Romanos Diogenes, the Byzantine emperor.

Konya became the capital of the Seljoukide State in Anatolia.

In some villages in Cappadocia, galleries and underground caves can be found. They form an underground network where inhabitants could find 26 New Focus | May / June 2020

The aim of such constructions was to protect men in times of conflict or raids made by Persians or Arabs.

There are about 200 underground cities in Cappadocia, and most of them were built between the 6th and the 10th century AD. Yet the origins of such cities could be more ancient. In the Book Of Xenophon we can read that the Hellenes used to stop off in Cappadocia, at Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı.

The Hittites may have been the first to develop such underground cities because they knew how to build tunnels to trap their enemies and take them by surprise.

After the Byzantine period, the Seldjoukides continued to use the network of galleries for military purposes.

The position and the use of the rooms was always the same: at the entrance, the stables and the cowsheds to keep the animals, then the storeroom for the food reserves then the kitchens and the canteen.

cover story Sometimes, a cave near the kitchens was used for making wine.

Further down, there were the dwellings, a chapel, corridors and tunnels linking the different levels of the city.

Ventilation shafts going to the bottom of the city ensured the ventilation of the caves, and wells provided water.

The entrance, as well as the different levels and important access areas were protected by a clever closing system: a big millstone was carved on the spot. Once rolled, it would perfectly block the entrance.

Kaymaklı It is located 20 km. (=13 miles) south of Nevşehir. It contains probably the most interesting underground city to be visited.

Places have been arranged for visits on 4 levels linked by tunnels around ventilation shafts.

You can see all the elements of the city and if you follow the arrows, you will find your way through this maze.

Derinkuyu Six km. (4 miles )south of Kaymaklı, the underground city of Derinkuyu is similar to that of Kaymaklı. However, it goes deeper (85 mt. (255 feet) and it has more levels.

Access to the lower levels is sometimes difficult, due to the narrowness of the galleries.

The town also features a missionary school in a big vaulted room. There is allegedly a tunnel linking the two underground cities.

Ihlara A bit further south west of the sites previously mentioned, the valley and the landscape around Ihlara are worth seeing.

When visiting the region, try and combine an underground city, the valley of Ihlara and the caravanserai in Ağızkarahan.

Two hours of walk are needed to visit the valley. It can take longer, according to the time spent in the churches in the valley.

The soil is made of successive metamorphic rocks (basalt and andesite) formed millions of years ago when the Hasan Dağı volcano erupted. The Melendiz river dug the valley into the plateau.

Little by little, a canyon 100 mt. deep (300 feet) has been formed. During the Byzantine period, human activity must have been important, since many churches were built. Thanks to the river, the banks are rich with alluvial deposits and they are cultivated. In the summer, the coolness of the water contrasts with the heat on the plateau above.

The religious vocation of the inhabitants started in the 6th century and ended in the 13th century. The churches are decorated according to two styles: the Byzantine style, for the churches near Belisırma, and the oriental style near Ihlara.

The starting point of the visit can be found 2 km. from the village, on the left bank.

Ağaç altı Kilise After going downstairs dug in the rock, you can reach « Ağaç altı Kilise » (the church under the tree). It was built on a cross pattern and it contains three apses. It is also known as Saint Daniel Church because of his portrait on the wall opposite the entrance. The style of the frescoes that can be seen in the church, previous to the iconoclastic period, has nothing to do with the Byzantine style. Although the paintings are quite rudimentary: the colours used are red, grey and yellow against a white background and they evoke scenes of the Passion: the Ascension, the Dormition, or the Adoration of the Three Wise Men, they are nonetheless remarkable.

Yılanlı Kilise The « Yılanlı Kilise », also called the Serpent church because of the snake

Cover story which has been painted on the left wall dates from the late 9th century. The church was built according to a different cross pattern and it contains an apse on the bank of the river, just below the vertical rock face.

Among others, you can see paintings representing Christ judging the world, Saint Helen and Constantine, a scene of weighing of the souls and the Dormition.

Other remarkable churches are pleasant to visit, like the « Sümbüllü Kilise » (church with hyacinth) or the « Kokar Kilise » (sweet-smelling church) the « Eğri Taş Kilise » , the « Karanlık Kilise »….

Göreme At about one km. from the village you can find the local museum in open air. In the museum, the most interesting churches can be visited.

The architecture of the churches is similar to that of the previous churches with a central nave and a vaulted ceiling. Some of them contain other elements, like a dome, apses and apsidioles.

Two techniques were used to decorate the churches: - a technique of colour washing with no plaster or coating. Most of the time, such paintings are in red and orange.

- A technique of fresco, which means that the rock face was previously coated with a mixture of plaster, sand and straw and it was then painted with various colours.

Elmalı Kilise The church with the apple tree was built in the 11th-12th centuries. You have to go through a narrow corridor to visit it. The pattern is a Greek cross. It is original in that it contains nine small domes on pendentives replacing the vaults.

The scenes of the life of Jesus can be seen, from the Nativity to the Resurrection and in the medallions, the portraits of Christ or of archangels painted on the walls in red hues.

Karanlık Kilise The dark church dates from the 12th-13th centuries. An extra fee is charged to visit the church. The decorations are outstanding, and the style of the paintings is more elaborated. The church used to belong to a monastery and around it, burial places as well as a canteen and kitchens can be seen.

Access is possible thanks to stairs leading to the narthex.

If you want to see the details of the paintings, do not forget to bring your torch with you because the church is rather dark. Many scenes of the life of Jesus are represented, among which Judas’s treason. Çarıklı Kilise The church was built in the 12th and 13th centuries. It contains two ranges of columns, a vaulted ceiling, four domes and three apses. It is decorated with lively paintings representing the Evangelists, the Nativity, the Transfiguration the resurrection of Lazarus, the entrance to Jerusalem, Judas’s treason, the Crucifixion and the Ascension.

Tokalı Kilise It is located outside the museum, but you need the museum entrance ticket to enter. You will visit it last. It is one of the largest churches in Cappadocia.

It contains four parts: an ancient church, dating from the 10th century with a nave, leading to a more recent church and another church underground and a small chapel at the north of the recent church.

The decorations of the ancient church date from the time of Nicephore Phocas and represent the chronological events of the life of Jesus, from the Annunciation to the Ascension.

In the more recent church, the same stages of the Passion are represented, in blue colours, on separate panels. Different saints can be noticed: Michael, George, Christopher and Basil.

Başkent Phnom Phen’de başlayan yolculuğumuz ilk durağımız olan Koh Kong’a kadar karayolculuğu ile sürdü.

300 km’lik yolu molalar ile 5-6 saatte alıyorsunuz. Genelikle otoban olan yolda molalar için çok sayıda yerel ve uluslararası restoran, Kafe bulmak zor değil.

binaları kaybolmuş. 4 yıl önce konakladığımız güzel otel, bir Türk’ün sahibi olduğu belki de şehrin en güzel restoranı Olive & Olive neredeydi? Tam şehir merkezinde bulunan ve şehrin sembolü Golden Lion Circle neyseki hala duruyor. Ama önünde yer alan bu şık Türk restoranı yok olmuş.

Şehir bir şantiye. Heryer gökdelen. Heryer Çin’ce tabelalar ile dolu. Oteller, casinolar, apartmanlar. Yol yok. Daha önce de kaldığımız otantik mimarili otelimiz Sokha Beach Otele ulaşmak saatlerimiz aldı. Yüksek binaların arasında 5 yıldızlı otelimizin de sanki yıldızları sökülmüş gibiydi.Şehre renk katan Viktory beach, Indipendence beach, Ochheuteal beach artık kullanılamayacak durumda. Gökdelenler bu plajları adeta ezmiş.

Geç vakit aslında birkaç km uzaklıkta yer alan ama yol inşaatları nedeniyle neredeyse ulaşmak için 1 saatimizi alan bir Rus yatırımıcının işlettiği White Butik otel de yediğimiz güzel öğlen yemeğinden sonra otelimize yine binbir zorlukla ulaştık ve günün geri kalan kısmını otelimizde geçirdik.

Sokha Beach Otel’in plajında 5 ülkenin yanaşmasına izin vermediği Ms. Westerdam gemisinin yolcularına rastladık. Tam seyahatimiz sırasında patlak veren Corana virüs tehlikesi nedeniyle gemiye kucak açan Kamboçya 36 New Focus | May / June 2020

hükümeti Sihanukville limanında yolcuların sağlık durumlarını kontrol ettikten sonra sırayla ülkelerine dönmeleri için zemin hazırlamış. 2200 kişik gemide dönüş uçağı sırası gelen yolcular peyderpey ülkelerine dönerken sırası gelmeyenler Sokha otelin plajında dinleniyorlardı.

Sihanukville’deki 2.günümüzde yine zorlu uğraşlar ile gideceğimiz Koh Rong adasının tekne iskele ve terminaline ulaştık. 1 saatlik yolculuk ile turumuzun en güzel plajlarına sahip Koh Rong adasında tüm günümüzü geçirdik.

Bir önceki adaya göre daha büyük ve bakımlı ada da yine bugallowların yanısıra küçük butik oteller ve değişik mutfakların restoranları yer alıyor.

Ve tabii ki İzmir’li bir Türk’e ait Coco Butik resort ve İzmir yön levhasıyla Buffalo restoran & Bar çok iyilokasyonu ve kalitesiyle bizi sevindirdi. Çok temizve uzun ince kumlu plajları ile Koh Rong tatiller için bizce en iyi ada. Günlük 35 dolar civarındaki bungalowlarda 2 kişi tatil yapmak mümkün.

Kamboçya’nın sahilleri ve adaları Çin istilasına uğramadığı sürece önemli bir tatil destinasyonu olacaktır. Ama 3. büyük kent Sihanukville ancak Çin’li turstlere hizmet verecektir.

Bu geçmişte defalarca oldu o nedenle belge devri yasaklandı. Şu an sektörün ihtiyacı olduğu için belge devrine izin verelim dedik. Art niyetliliğin önüne geçmek zorundayız.

Sektördeki mağduriyeti gidermek için çalışıyoruz. Ortada sakıncalı bir şey görmüyorum. Arkadaşların sorunları düzeldi diye düşünüyorum.

Kısa çalışma ödeneğinde maaşlar 5 Mayıs’ta yatacak.

Galataport türk turizmi için çok önemli projelerinden biri. Virüs nedeniyle gemilerin yanaşması gecikmiş olabilir ama Galataport bu yıl içinde hizmete girmiş olacak.

Belediye hukuki süreçleri uzatarak zaman kazanıyor. Düzenlemeyle Galata’yı bir müze kule haline getirip cazibe merkezi yapacağız. Ben orada Alman Lisesi’nde 8 sene okudum, benim başkan yardımcım Ahmet Misbah Demircan da orada 3 dönem belediye başkanlığı yaptı. Biz Beyoğlu’nu yaşadık. Belediye Başkanımız samimi ise destek olmak açısından oralarda düzenleme yaparak çok ciddi bize destek olabilirler.”

Corona virüsü salgınında ‘Kanal İstanbul’ ihalesi yapıldı!

Kanal İstanbul projesinde Odabaşı ve Dursunköy köprülerinin başka bir alanda tekrar inşa edilmesi işi için corona virüsü salgınına rağmen bugün ihaleye çıktı.

“Etüd proje hizmet alımı” ihalesinin tahmini bedeli 566 bin 649 TL olarak açıklandı. İdareden 8 ihale dosyası satın alındı ancak ihaleye 5 teklif sunuldu. Artukulu Mimarlık tarafından sunulan teklif eksik evrak nedeniyle geçersiz sayıldığı için geriye 4 geçerli teklif kaldı.

İhaleye Mukarnas Mimarlık 500 bin TL, Hasan Fehmi Şahin 550 bin TL, Safir Jeoteknik 507 bin TL, Altıparmak Mimarlık da 408 bin TL teklif sundu. En uygun teklif Altıparmak Mimarlık şirketi tarafından sunulmuş oldu.

Tekliflerin açıklanmasının ardından oturum sona erdi. İhalenin sonucunun tekliflerin incelenmesinin ardından yasal süresi içinde açıklanacağı bildirildi.

Bakanlık’tan otellere finansman destegi geldi Kültür ve Turizm Bakanlığı 2020 yaz sezonu rezervasyonlarına ilişkin tur operatörleri/seyahat acentaları tarafından konaklama tesislerine yapılan ön ödemelerin iadesi taleplerinin yerine getirilmesinde konaklama tesislerine finansman desteği sağlanmasını hedefleyen bir kredi paketi üzerinde kamu bankaları ile anlaşttı.

6 Ay vadeli kredi tutarı, banka tarafından, otel adına doğrudan iade yapılacak olan tur operatörünün/seyahat acentasının banka hesabına yatırılacak.

Seyahat izni e-Devlet’ten de alınabilecek Şehirler arası otobüs ve uçak yolculuğu yapacak vatandaşlar için Seyahat İzin Belgesi dönemi geçtiğimiz günlerde başlamıştı.

Belgeyi almak isteyenler kaymakamlıklara başvuruyordu. Cumhurbaşkanlığı Dijital Dönüşüm Ofisi’nden yapılan açıklamada, bu belgenin artık e-Devlet’ten alınabileceği belirtildi.

WTM fuar alanı Excel, hastane oldu WTM turizm fuarlarının yapıldığı Excel fuar alanı Coronavirüs hastanesine döndürüldü. Çin’in Wuhan kentinde ortaya çıkan ve tüm dünyaya yayılan Coronavirüs ile ilgili olarak son dakika gelişmeleri yaşanmaya devam ediyor. Virüs Çin’de ortaya çıksa da en çok İtalya’da can kaybına sebep oldu ve Dünya Sağlık Örgütü virüsün merkez üssünün Avrupa olduğunu açıklamasının ardından İngiltere Ulusal Sağlık Servisi ‘de bir dizi kararlar aldı. İngiltere Ulusal Sağlık Servisi (NHS), modern hemşireliğin kurucusu sayılan İngiliz hemşire ve sosyal reformcu Florence Nightingale’den adını alan Nightingale Hastanesi’ni, ilk olarak Excel salonlarında açıldığını duyurdu.

Birçoğu ilk yardım yeterliliklerine sahip olan, İngiltere merkezli karayolu havayolları tarafından işten çıkarılan binlerce personele bu yeni tesiste iş teklif edildi. İngiltere’de turizm ve diger etkinliklere evsahipliği yapan Birmingham Ulusal fuar Merkezi, Birmingham ve Manchester Merkez Kompleksi’nde İngiltere’deki iki Nightingale hastanesin olarak açılacak. İskoç hükümeti Glasgow’daki İskoç Sergi Merkezi’nin 1.000 yataklı geçici bir hastaneye dönüştürüleceğini bildirdi.

Hac ziyaretleri beklemede Suudi Arabistan, bu yıl hac planlarını askıya alma çağrısı yaptı. Suudi Arabistan Hac ve Umre Bakanı Muhammed Benten, ülkenin hac ve umre ziyaretlerine tamamen hazır olduğunu belirterek, corona virüsü salgını nedeniyle hac planı yapan bütün müslümanların verilecek kesin kararı beklemesi konusunda uyardı.

Muhammed Benten, devlet televizyonu El Ekberiye’ye yaptığı açıklamada, “Dünya çapındaki Müslüman kardeşlerimizden durum netlik kazanana kadar beklemelerini istiyoruz” dedi.

BBC Türkçe’de yer alan habere göre, hacı adayları hac ibadetlerine 28 Temmuz’da başlayıp 3 Ağustos’a kadar devam edecek. 2 milyon hacı adayının bu yıl ülkeyi ziyaret etmesi bekleniyor.

Suudi Arabistan Hükümeti bu ayın başlarında Umre ziyaretlerini askıya almıştı.

Bülten İstanbul Havalimanı’nda 3. pist haziranda açılabilir İstanbul Havalimanı’nın işletmecisi iGA’nın Genel Müdürü Kadri Samsunlu, bir yıl önce tam kapasite ile çalışmaya başlayan havalimanında 64 milyon yolcu ağırladıklarını, 3. pisti ise 18 Haziran’da devreye almayı planladıkların söyledi.

Geçen yıl 6 Nisan’da tam kapasiteyle operasyona başlayan İstanbul Havalimanı’nın ilk yılını doldurması nedeniyle yaptığı yazılı değerlendirmede Samsunlu, “6 Nisan 2019’dan 31 Mart 2020 tarihine kadar yaklaşık bir yıllık dönemde 64 milyon yolcu ve 74 hava yolu şirketine İstanbul Havalimanı’nda ev sahipliği yaptık. 737 Max tipi uçakların yerde olmasıyla yaşanan kaybın yanı sıra geçen yıl taşınma döneminde uçuş yapılmayan günler ve 22 Nisan’a kadarki kademeli tam kapasiteli operasyona geçiş de bu yolcu sayısının bugün çok daha yukarılarda olmasını engelledi” dedi ve ekledi: “2019’da yaşadığımız bu tür durumların yol açtığı kapasite kaybını, Ocak 2020’den itibaren Çin’in Wuhan kentinde ortaya çıkan corona virüsü salgını da artırdı. Bu salgının hızla ilerleyişi de havacılık sektöründe ciddi bir gerilemeye neden oldu.”

Samsunlu buna karşın havalimanında 3. pisti devreye almaya hazırlandıklarını belirterek, “Hâlihazırda 3. pist çalışmalarımız sürüyor.

Operasyonel olarak önemli avantajlar sağlayacak bu yeni pistimizi 18 Haziran’da hizmete almayı planlıyoruz. İstanbul Havalimanı çevresindeki rüzgar gülleri bu yıl bitmeden taşınarak kaldırılacak ve ek binaların yapımı tamamlanacak” diye konuştu.

Samsunlu ayrıca, ilk işletme yılı içerisinde DHMİ tarafından garanti edilen 233.1 milyon euroluk dış hat yolcu gelirinin aşılması sonucu İGA tarafından devlete 22.4 milyon euro tutarında ek ödeme gerçekleştirildiğini söyledi.

Hava trafiği %8.8, yolcu sayısı % 18.8 azaldı Devlet Hava Meydanları İşletmesi Genel Müdürlüğü, Mart 2020 dönemine ait havalimanı istatistiklerini açıkladı. Dünyayı etkisi altına alan corona virüsü salgını nedeniyle zor günler geçiren havacılık sektörünün aldığı ağır hasar rakamlara da yansıdı. Havalimanlarına gelen uçak, yolcu ve yük sayısında düşüşler görülürken, nisan ayında iptal edilen yurt içi ve yurt dışı uçuşları nedeniyle tablonun daha da kötüleşmesi bekleniyor.

Devlet Hava Meydanları İşletmesi Genel Müdürlüğü verilerine göre, Mart sonu itibariyle yılın ilk üç ayında Türkiye’de 56 havalimanından toplam 286 bin 943 sefer yapıldı. Geçtiğimiz yılın aynı ayına göre hava trafiğinde yüzde 8.8 düşüş görüldü.

Yolcu sayısına bakıldığında ise 1 Ocak – 31 Mart tarihleri arasında 33 milyon 554 yolcu havalimanlarını kullanırken, bir önceki yılın aynı dönemine göre yüzde 18.8’lik düşüş görüldü. İç hat yolcu sayısı yüzde 20.9 daralırken, dış hatta düşüş yüzde 15.7’de kaldı.

Ocak ayında 13 milyon 930 bin, Şubat ayında 12 milyon 275 bin, Mart ayında ise 7 milyon 347 bin yolcu Türkiye’de havalimanlarını kullandı. Mart ayında şubata göre yolcu sayısının yüzde 40’a yakın azalması dikkat çekti.

Bir önceki yılın aynı dönemine göre yolcu trafiğindeki en büyük düşüş yüzde 55 ile Isparta Süleyman Demirel Havalimanı’nda görülürken, yüzde 38 ile Erzurum ikinci, yüzde 36 ile Antalya Zafer Havalimanı ise üçüncü sırada yer aldı. İstanbul Sabiha Gökçen Havalimanı’nda yolcu sayısında yüzde 12’lik düşüş olurken, bu rakam Ankara Esenboğa’da yüzde 28 oldu. İstanbul Havalimanı geçtiğimiz yıl söz konusu dönemde faaliyetlerine henüz tam olarak başlamadığı için yolcu sayısı kıyaslaması yapılamadı. Mart 2020 itibarıyla sene başından bu yana İstanbul Havalimanı’nı 12.2 milyon kişi kullandı. Kapatılan Atatürk Havalimanı geçtiğimiz yıl aynı dönemde 15.2 milyon yolcu ağırlamıştı.

Türkiye genelinde havalimanlarından gerçekleştirilen yük taşımacılığında da 2020’nin ilk üç ayında bir önceki yılın aynı dönemine göre yüzde 9.3’lük düşüş görüldü. Ocak – Mart döneminde bagaj, kargo ve posta olmak üzere toplam 739 bin 850 ton yük trafiği gerçekleşti. Ticari uçak trafiği ise söz konusu dönemde yüzde 15.4’lük düşüşle 234 bin 136’da kaldı.

İstihdamla ilgili bütün sektörün yararlandığı bazı uygulamalar var. En önemlisi kısa çalışma ödeneği, burada bir esneklik getirildi..

Acentelerle ve otellerle ilgili bir avans ödemeleri var, burada bir finansman açığı olduğu için biz Hazine ve Maliye Bakanlığımızla konuşarak kredi avans geri iade sistemi diye bir kredi yarattık, önümüzdeki Pazartesi’ye kadar başvuruları kabul ediyoruz, yararlanmak isteyen oteller başvurup almış oldukları avansla tutarlı olarak kamu bankalarından kredi tesisi yapıyoruz.

Türkiye Otelciler Birliği (TÜROB) Başkanı Müberra Eresin, 2020 yılında turizm sektörünün global düzeyde olağan dışı bir şekilde, belki de tarihinde ilk defa durma noktasına geldiğini söyledi. Eresin, “Ancak şunu rahatlıkla belirtmeliyim ki bu geçici bir süreçtir ve elbette sağlıklı ve güzel günler gelecektir. Seyahat etmek, merak etmek, keşfetmek insanoğlunun asla bitmeyecek tutkusudur. Çok daha güçlü bir şekilde, yine turizmi bir bütün olarak en iyi şekilde sürdürüceğiz” dedi.

TÜROB Başkanı Eresin, turizmin mevcut durumuyla ilgili bilgi verirken, sektörel beklentilerini de paylaştı. Eresin, “Dünya Turizm Örgütü’nün bu yılki mottosu olan ‘traveltomorrow’ yani bugün evde kalarak sağlığımızı geri kazanacağız ve yarın seyahat etmeye devam edeceğiz. Tüm dünya gibi bizler de bu kötü günlerin biteceği inancımızı koruyor ve en kısa sürede turizm hareketlerinin başlayıp bu darboğazdan çıkacağımızı umut ediyoruz” diye konuştu.

Eresin, şu görüşleri dile getirdi: “Günümüzde turizm kavramı; seyahat etmenin çok daha ötesinde, sosyo-kültürel bir güç, dış ilişkilerde önemli bir diplomatik araç, özellikle Türkiye gibi turizm markası ülkelerde ekonominin temel ayağı haline gelmiş bir sektördür. Tüm dünyayı derinden etkileyen ve insan hayatını tehdit eden Covid19 virüsü sebebiyle, turizm ve seyahat sektörü geçici olarak durmuş, insanların öncelikleri ve bakış açıları değişmiş, sektörümüz şu an için ertelenen, hayal edilen ve özlenen bir motivasyon haline gelmiştir. Türkiye Otelciler Birliği olarak her zaman yüksek bilinç ve sorumlulukla hareket etmeye, ülkemize en iyi şekilde değer katmak için çalışmaya devam edeceğiz.” Eresin, ayrıca tüm turizm camiasının, emektar turizm çalışanlarının Turizm Haftası’nı kutladı. İzmir Kemeraltı da UNESCO geçici liste’sinde Kemeraltı ve çevresini kapsayan İzmir Tarihi Kent Merkezi’nin UNESCO Dünya Miras Listesi’ne dahil edilmesinde ilk adım olan Geçici Liste’ye girme süreci başarıyla tamamlandı. İzmir Valiliği, İzmir Büyükşehir Belediyesi, Konak Belediyesi, İzmir İl Kültür ve Turizm Müdürlüğü, İzmir Ticaret Odası, Ege Bölgesi Sanayi Odası, İzmir Ticaret Borsası, İzmir Esnaf ve Sanatkarlar Odaları Birliği, İMEAK Deniz Ticaret Odası, İzmir Kalkınma Ajansı, TARKEM ve Kentimiz İzmir Derneği’nin tüm süreci birlikte koordine ettiği Kemeraltı ve çevresinin UNESCO Dünya Mirası Geçici Listesi’ne girmesi için hazırlanan ve TARKEM Genel Müdürü Sergenç İneler’in 27 Mart 2019 tarihinde Kültür ve Turizm Bakanlığı’na tüm İzmir adına elden ulaştırdığı dosya başvurusu UNESCO tarafından da kabul edildi. www.smpublication.com 49
