Mabouya

The aim of this report is to make appear the potentiality of the island to be developed for the tourism.

The Island Mabouya is one of the few remaining virgin islands in the Grenada islands configuration, and certainly the only one to stay very close to the town with the airport, ferry port, banks and so on – it’s approximatelly 1500 metres far from the center of the town (Carriacou island). Since the ancient times, Mabouya has been deserted; it hasn’t been either used as a day-trip tourist destination. All this make the island – and especially the beach area on the east - seam pretty wild and untouched. Indeed, as soon as the beach has been kept untouched to nowadays, we can notice the rare beauty of the beach covered by traces of natural materials, especially corals and stones remained due to natural phenomenons (storms, hurricans, and so on. The inland part of the island is hidden under tropical dry forest and it has become home of many species of animals; among others, you can find iguanas, which populate the island and also some lizards exactly called Mabouya. The marvellous sea around Mabouya takes part of the protected “Marine Park” and it’s a perfect place for diving with the variety of seabeds: you can choose between the coral seabed, the rock seabed and sand seabed.

Topography of Mabouya The rectangular shaped island faces the north and the south on its long sides. There is a sandy flat area on the east and on the south, the mouldy area on the north-east and the rocky area on the north and on the west. The island is 386 metres long and 234 metres wide with the approximate area of 79 000 sqm.

The beach The white sandy beach, which is long about 200 metres and wide at least 40 metres, is located on the east, in the airiest part of the island. The consistence of sand grain is coarse; the advantage of this kind of beach is the moderate temperature of the sand surface. The beach is surrounded by plenty of beautiful wild palms; low tide make appear the coral forests which full the slope at very beginning of the sea. The seabed is covered by stones rounded by the sea water. In the north corner of the beach there is a small natural pool encircled by rocks on the north and by barrier reef on the south. In the inland you can find the flat terrain area (approximate surface area about 15 000 sqm) ; this part of the island seams appropriate to become the heart of the resort. We can find also a lot of fallen trees which continue to grow on the ground expanding in very particular shapes: this trees could establish the “living furniture” of the place. It seams in this area there could be any spring of potable water. On the north and on the west the flat terrain begin very undulate; the dynamicity of the tarrain create a plenty of surprising corners to be admired.

The sea and seabeds The clean water of Mabouya sea offers the pleasure for both the swimmers and divers, because of the optimal temperature and because of the variety of seabeds. Divers can find many species of fish, as snappers, barracudas, mackarels, eels, rays, lobsters, crabs and turtles.
