Located on the east coast of North Cyprus, Famagusta is known for its preserved 15th and 16th century Venetian walls surrounding the old city. There are plenty of medieval and renaissance buildings that can be visited, most of which damaged during the Turkish siege of the city in 1571. When strolling around the old town, one can admire something of interest in almost every corner. The southern part of the modern city (internationally known as Varosha) has been closed to public following the international division in the last century. A Venetian harbour town in the past, it is backed by the dramatic wooded hills of BeĹ&#x;parmak Mountains and the castle that guards the harbour. A short drive to the east of Kyrenia and nestling in the foothills of the mountains is the village of Bellapais. It is here that the most beautiful and serene of all the ancient sites on the whole island are to be found. The Gothic Abbey of Bellapais has stood on a rocky promontory since the 12th Century and apart from the ravages wrought by time and man, it has changed very little. To the east and west of Kyrenia, there are some of the finest beaches for sand lovers, some of which are well developed cosmopolitan venues with good restaurants and water sports, while others are more peaceful and remote. It will depend on what each individual tourist is looking for, though one thing in summer is guaranteed, the waters of the Mediterranean will be warm and crystal clear no matter which beach you explore. Be part of history and immerse yourself in Lefkoşa. Wander around North Cyprus’ old town with unexpected architectural twists that reflect the past civilisations and the capital’s division since 1964 into Nicosia (Lefkosia)and North Nicosia (Lefkoşa). The splendid Selimiye Mosque, once the Gothic-style Cathedral of St Sofia, lords over the city with its twin minarets added by the Ottomans. During your free time you can cross the no-man’s land from north to south at the Ledras Street checkpoint, where hectic bazaar stalls give way to fancy boutique windows, Turkish signs morph into Greek script, and street-side chatter switches to different sounds.
Kyrenia has always been governed by the sea and its natural harbour, is today just as popular with visitors whose only desire is to stroll the seaside strand. Stride up the honey-toned stone ramparts of Kyrenia Castle, before heading towards Bellapais monastery, the exquisite ruins of an Augustinian monastery. Originally built in the 12th century by monks, the site remains much as it was in 1976. Later head towards St. Hilarion Castle. The full fairy-tale castle only becomes apparent once you are directly beneath it. Rumour has it that Walt Disney drew inspiration from the jagged contours of St Hilarion when he created the animated film Snow White.
Once the center of Cyprus’ lucrative citrus industry, Güzelyurt which literally means beautiful country in Turkish, is one of the richest agricultural areas in North Cyprus.
