Kyrenia
Kyrenia has always been governed by the sea and its natural harbour, is today just as popular with visitors whose only desire is to stroll the seaside strand. Stride up the honey-toned stone ramparts of Kyrenia Castle, before heading towards Bellapais monastery, the exquisite ruins of an Augustinian monastery. Originally built in the 12th century by monks, the site remains much as it was in 1976.
Famagusta
This historical city got its name from the noble Venetian family of Augusta. Today the beautiful coastal walled city of Famagusta awaits you. Winding lanes rimmed with terrace rows of houses suddenly give way to ruined Gothic churches, the most famous of which is the former Cathedral of St Nicholas. You will also visit the monastery of Saint Barnabas; the founder of the Cypriot Orthodox Church and the ancient city-kingdom of Salamis. You will view the area of ‘Varosha’ known as ‘ghost town’, famous for its golden sandy beaches, which became popular after the British built a club called ‘King George’.
