Introduction More than “just another design and fit out company”, SM STUDIO was born of a desire to bring a truly outstandingfit out solution to India. We innovate new design solutions and revolutionary processes to deliver exceptionally smooth turnkey fit out solutions to clients across India. Corporate Interiors


Project : ARCIL Headquarters Location : Matunga (W),Mumbai Year : 2012 Area & Program: This is a 26,000 sq. ft. office space, segregated into

three zones of southwest, northwest and northeast. Each zone is equipped with its own service core encompassing central AHU, electrical room, hub and washroom.

Brief: For the first asset construction company in India, the client called the architects to create a space that meets and fulfils the criteria for a green office.

Solution: To meet this requirement, we have focused on developing an effective layout with distinctive enclosed and semi-open spaces scattered across the periphery of the space. We have also included clean, white frames in the form of low height ceiling, which covers areas and provides optimum use of the ceiling. Design Statement: For creating a subtle yet classy corporate space, we

have opted for a neutral colour scheme of white and beige flooring. This also helped to bring out the office’s tasteful collection of paintings that dot across the corridors. In addition, the office decor subtly imbibes the brand’s colour of blue through the chairs, soft boards and other notable soft furnishings in this space.


Project : ECI Location : Andheri,Mumbai Year : 2008 Area & Program: The office covers two floors complete with a central courtyard and

comprises a research and development lab, customer support lab, classroom, restrooms and other major facilities, all spread across 25, 000 sq. ft.

Brief: We had to completely remodel a floor that is spread across two wings and is divided

by a central courtyard. The office was a cold shell that needed be revamped and handed over a short duration of two months. The plan also had to bear in mind that the employees make use of the office space day and night.

Solution: Keeping all this various considerations in mind, we adopted a hybrid approach for this challenge, thus creating a combination of work areas such as open spaces for collaborations and private enclosures to start off with. Design Statement: We have also used modular furniture done in mushroom coloured

and brown filleted with hi-land pine and wedge laminates for a suitable contemporary space.



Project : Corporate office for Shera Plywood Location :Andheri,Mumbai Year : 2014 The brief by “Viral Corporation “ was to design their boutique office of about 1500 sft for their new brand , they were launching in India called “ Shera” , which is into manufacture & supply of fiber cement based materials. These materials are first of its kind to adhere to all the green certifications and be used for various functions both interiors & exteriors. At this Juncture it was rather a challenge for us to ourselves first explore the material to its complete potential ,keeping the context in mind. Additionally we also had to make the space playful ,welcoming and some place were the end user loves to come & spend time, not only the employee’s but also the visitors who carried a very varying profile; Also making the space a self-display center exhibiting the maximum usage of each and every material the company manufactured . As a result, we in turn, instead of making rigid corporate spaces , made a layout that was more welcoming by creating a open layout where barriers of formalities were broken, in terms of human interaction of the space, and one space very comfortably gelled into the other. We did realize the graphical note to this office needs to be very warm and lively, hereby significantly reducing the stress at work. Hence while we were creating a space that was as “ COLD AS ICE” with the use of a “ bold cold color “ GREY “ throughout ( which is also the natural color of SHERA ply boards) , we interspaced it the use of “ LIGHT “ as an element to create “GRAPHICS , FURNITURE , and also the basic form of GENERAL LIGHTING “ in the office. One could also say that the product was an outcome of being prompted by the brief to create an “UNOFFICE” atmosphere.

Project : Mocha Head Office Location : Byculla,Mumbai Year : 2007 Area & Program: A 5000 sq. ft. vibrant office space for the Mocha Group to be situated within the existing shell of the 100-year old building, located above the American Express Bakery.

Brief: The client wanted a space that would give a

strong visual impact to visitors. He also specified that interiors should be kept minimalist and Spartan without sparing any attention to detail. In essence, he wanted a space that showcased originality in design.

Solution: For this project, we were guided by the site in our design approach. Accordingly, we have retained the identity of the bakery by de-plastering a wall and applying a PU coating, thus lending a vintage appeal to the space. For a bold, striking look, we have opted for rustic black kadappa flooring, grey concrete walls and discoloured columns and beams, all which make for strong elements of interest in this space. Design Statement: An interesting facet of the

design is the incorporation of all the existing iron pillars and beams with the new site, thus effectively creating a space where old meets new.




Project : Mango Suites at Location : Kandla port, Gujurat Area & Program: Spread across one acre of lush, green land, the constructed property includes a two-storied hotel building lying adjacent to a sprawling outdoor area.

Brief: To create a chic and sophisticated hotel offering all necessary facilities and services to provide guests with a comfortable and serene stay, typically enjoyed in a four-star hotel

Solution: The hotel comes full serviced with a welcoming 15’X25’ swimming, health club and spa area, all-day dining restaurant, specialty restaurant and grand entrance lobby, thus providing guests all the leisure activities and amusements to make their holiday truly pleasurable. They can also select from three different room types based on their needs. Design Statement: We have gone for a minimal and contemporary look for this hotel, which is rather unusual for an establishment of such standing but which really reflects the elegant feel of this space.


Project : Resort at Umbergaon Location : Kandla port, Gujurat Year : Completed Area & Program: Covering approximately eight acres, this hospitality facility comprises 50 rooms, divided into three distinct categories along with 16 individual private bungalows that lie on the plot.

Brief: We were called upon to set up an comprehensive hotel facility that would look after all the needs of the guests in well-designed spaces with open, bright and stimulating interiors.

Solution: To aid the plush rooms available at the hotel, we have put together an array of top notch facilities such as an all-day dining restaurant, another lively themed restaurant, banquet and meeting hall facilities specifically catering to corporate groups, gym and a health club, indoor and outdoor games room for families, a party hall cum lounge area. In addition to the above-mentioned luxury amenities, the space is also outfitted with a 25’x15’ large swimming pool, an expansive open area with a beautifully cultivated landscape that is also used for large get-togethers and much more. We have also created spaces that are suitable to people with special needs such as the play area designed for handicapped children that has a toy train and sand forts. Design Statement: To bring about a relaxed and appealing ambience, we have opted for a Mediterranean style decor that very much suits the

surroundings. All the villas have been made from prefabricated structures that ensure longevity and easy-maintenance. These Instakabin structures are designed to withstand any amount of stress and strain associated with rough handling, lifting and shifting, extreme climatic conditions and the most challenging terrains. All the products are treated with specialized chemical solutions and paints to make them resistant to white ants, termites, fire, water, corrosion etc. The economic life of the bunkhouses is an estimated 20 years. Additionally, each cabin has been painted in a vividly, bright colours that add to the charm of the resort.


Project : Oasis - service apartment for ICICI Location : Andheri (W) Year : Completed Area & Program: This project consists of a 15,000 sq. ft. apartment building inclusive of two sets of 2BHK homes on each floor that are fully equipped with all business class services.

Brief: The client wanted plush, lavish homes that are equipped with all the latest modern amenities and facilities to provide a luxurious lifestyle for the

residents. The apartment need to be done in neutral tones and made flexible such that those who moved in could spruce it up according to their tastes.

Solution: To meet this brief, the entire building has been divided into five main areas, namely, the reception on the ground floor, restaurant and other hospitality facilities kept on the 18th floor where residents can enjoy the fabulous views while dining. In terms of different categories of rooms, the building offers single and double occupancy rooms, 32 in all and set together on the second and fifth floor. It also has 8 Executive rooms that are scattered across the sixth and seventh floor. Design Statement: To create a home with a distinctively luxe appeal, we have made use of varied rich materials that have a glossy finish. To make it

more desirable and to break the monotony of the neutral white tones, stylish wallpapers help to balance out the décor. Additionally, warm wooden surfaces create an inviting look in this space. The colour scheme and decor is well set off by mood lighting.



Residential


Project : Private Residence - Bandra Location : Bandra, Mumbai Year : 2007 Area & Program: A 10, 000 sq. ft. space on the topmost floor of a city apartment building, positioned between two terraces. Brief: We were given a cold shell wherein they had to optimize the layout and internal partition walls to make it seem like a private bungalow. Solution: In order to create a calm and serene ambience a long, telescopic space was created that merges the two terraces in a visual corridor. To enhance it further, the terrace has been made green and spacious with lotus ponds, water curtains and pebbled areas. For the interior layout, the public spaces (business lounge & bar, office) and private life (bedrooms, kitchen & dining spaces) are combined in a shielded open plan. Design Statement: The home is defined by stark yet powerful spaces, play of materials and intricate details. Three service ducts are transformed into light filtering boxes on both sides of living room, optimizing natural light. The 40 ft. long water curtain wall in the terrace with mood lighting lends serenity to the home. Splashes of colour in the furnishing and traditional patterns in panelling add a touch of warmth to the modern home


Location : Akolam, Trivandrum, kerala Building Area : 3,500 SFT Site Area : 2.5 Acres Juxtaposing uber living in the lap of nature, SM Studio proposes super luxurious apartments for an upcoming multi-level housing complex in close proximity of the scenic Akkulam lake in Trivandrum. An idyllic setting for those who do not want to compromise on their luxury quotient, yet want to be in the midst of nature, ‘the blue waters by heera’ is a sample residence of 3500 sq. ft. in a 2.5 acre plot. Although directly in contrast – traditional architectural makeup with an avant garde interior - the principal idea essentially emerges from an effort to integrate the inside and outside. Conseqeuntly, the design attempts to draw a great deal from its surroundings. The architecture presents a clear resolution of spaces and a distinct design sense led by simplicity, sensitivity and a certain level of opulence. The residence is defined by distinction in public and private spaces both spatially, and by its interior details. The formal living, family lounge, dining and bedroom with wide openings extend beyond the physical boundaries, onto a wide verandah that opens out to the lake and landscape beyond. All the primary spaces are designed to extend the flow of natural light inside, and the central passage that leads to the bedrooms is lit by a tri-layered, acrylic screen that is installed as a false ceiling (which visually holds the space together). Indulgence could be the key factor here, as preference for a chic, contemporary lifestyle is translated in many ways: laser cut, POP false ceiling with an intricate pattern; metal screens along common areas; different flooring patterns and a variety of wall finishes lending colour and vibrancy to the spaces inside. This diversity of materials and finishes, however, in some way tends to affect the overall coherence of the design. Yet, the large openings offer framed vistas, facilitating just the premise – luxuriant living amidst nature! If only, the opulence could have been understated, it could perhaps have been in better harmony with its surroundings.


Project : Serviced Apartment at Khar Location : Mumbai Year : 2012 Area & Program: This is a well-balanced and beautifully done-up 4BHK service apartment for high-end owners.

Brief: The client asked for a space that was clutter-free and elegant and

essentially a cold shell that would later filled up by the owner by adding his own artwork, change of veneer etc

Solution: As this space is not designed for a particular client, we decided to go for simple and minimal, sticking to a darker palette and applying a lot of mirror work throughout the home for a spacious look. Aside from this, it is a full-equipped and furnished home. Design Statement: Here, we have gone for a subtle luxurious look with

a warm mix of materials that make for an attractive ambience. Understated and intricate detailing brings originality to the decor while a judicious use of glass, particularly in the main living area, gives a spacious appeal to the apartment. To carry off the cozy ambience, we have chosen a mix of light and dark veneers that are further enhanced by a plethora of decorative elements such as intricately carved mirrors, rich, velvet furnishings and leather work. Every bedroom has a pattern of woodwork that forms the design element in that room. For the living room, we have gone for an oversize white sofa that is set in front of leather finished wallpaper. These warm and inviting design elements combined with the golden artifact help bring about a classy English style home.


Project : Terrace Apt. at Khar Location : Mumbai Year : 2012 Area & Program: This is an ultra luxurious duplex cum terrace

apartment situated the heart of a commercial district. It includes ten bathrooms, two master bedrooms, a kid’s bedroom and a guest room, a beautiful pooja room, and ten bathrooms in total, that are spread across two the levels. It also houses a spacious entrance lobby on each of the two floors.

Brief: The client was looking for a high tech ‘smart home’ that felt luxurious and gelled well in the modern setting. Also, as this was a sprawling home with multifunctional purposes, the challenge was to create a fluid look.

Solution: This was achieved by employing stylish use of different furniture and decor elements in various rooms as well as through colourful spaces. We also decided to create an interesting indoor/outdoor living through plenty of green spaces. Design Statement: To maintain continuity in the design, a similar

designer marble slab is used throughout the house and is laid in an eyecatching pattern. Hues of beige, browns and whites with additional in fills of colour lends an exotic appeal.

Project : Govardhan Garden Jethpor Location : Gujurat Year : Ongoing


Area & Program:Â These are both similar projects undertaken for Govardhan developers with Jethpur comprising a 16 acres development having a cluster of 124 bungalows aside the entrance and common amenities.

Brief: This is a weekend housing scheme targeting the middle class segment. It is open to localities and NRIs that are looking for their own private spaces. Solution: For this reason, while the homes are situated within a gated community, they are designed in such a way that the owners enjoy the shelter of his own home. They are available in various sizes ranging from 367 sq. yards to 975 sq. yards. Design Statement:Â In addition, we have planned numerous leisure spaces like swimming pools, clubhouse (4500 sq. yards) and many more that is open

to all residents and which lend a serene ambience to the space. Also the eco-friendly constructions, abundance of fresh air, surrounding green landscapes are all designed to promote a healthy lifestyle.


Project : Commercial Office for Advik Textiles Location : Andheri (E), Mumbai Year : Ongoing Area & Program: This is a commercial building with a 55,000 sq. ft. built-up area. The site is not a typical rectangular plot, and instead features a trapezoidal space. This has aided us in creating a very distinctive looking building for the client.

Brief: The client was looking for a very contemporary style office ensured maximum utilization of FSI. Solution:The built form presents a composition of masses that have been interlocked together, thus creating a geometric structure that makes the space stand out from its surroundings as well as suited for the topography of the space. The highlight of this building is the 10 storied high atrium while the lower two levels are taken up as a shopping area and the above 8 floors stand as offices. Design Statement: Thanks to the willingness of the client to experiment, we were able to create a building that combines a variety of unusual materials such as flint along with granite for the wall surfaces. Additionally, we have further enhanced this structure by adopting a number of green measures in the design such as UV rated glasses, application of glass surfaces on the north side etc.
