It’s time to explore! Students of all ages are invited to tap into new passions in science, technology, engineering, the arts, athletics and ultimately explore the far corners of their brains this summer at St. Margaret’s Episcopal School. The expert faculty of St. Margaret’s will challenge and stretch kids’ minds in an unforgettable, fun-filled summer of innovation, collaboration, trying, tinkering, testing and creating! There will be no neat rows of desks and blank, white walls to limit the minds of our young explorers! Robots, motherboards, 3D printers, iPADs, instruments, music, color, nature, dirt, sand, sun and of course the all-powerful brain will be their tools! Choose from a variety of hands-dirty, brain-bursting exploration sessions that are right for your child. Does your child need extra practice in math, reading and writing? They can do that too with our back-to-school academic readiness and enrichment courses!

Instructors & Supervision: St. Margaret’s Summer Exploration Camp is directed and overseen daily by onsite, experienced St. Margaret’s faculty and staff. All courses are also taught by St. Margaret’s faculty, each who have received thorough and proper background screening. Student supervision is provided at all times. St. Margaret’s Nurse’s Office, staffed with full-time Registered Nurses, is also open during Summer Exploration Camp.

5-6-7-8… Go-Fight-Win! – Tartan Cheer and Dance Camp Have you ever wanted to learn the cheers the Tartan cheerleaders perform at football games? Do you dance anytime you hear music? If you want to do both of these things then join Miss Jamie for the beginning cheer and dance camp! Each class will be spent on both cheer and dance skills. Participants will learn cheer skills including correct motion placement, proper jump technique and beginner stunts. Dance portions of the class will include stretching, conditioning, basic jazz technique and basic hip hop movements. Campers should wear shorts and tennis shoes. Baseball Bonanza America’s favorite pastime is filled with mathematical formulas and statistics. In Baseball Bonanza, students will make mathematical connections, examine numbers and number relationships, and use computation, estimation, and statistics. Students will choose a city in California and create their very own team. After decorating their jersey and pendant, students will use their draft list to draft players from Major League Baseball teams. Students may choose players according to position and place them in a batting lineup. Each day the students will fill out a Daily Scoring Form using the sports section of the Orange County Register from this year’s baseball season to identify the at bats, runs scored, hits and runs batted in for each of their players. At the end of the week we will calculate battering averages and statistics will be graphed. Points for each team will be kept on the board and we will decide as a League what the winner will receive. Once the mathematics portion of Baseball Bonanza is completed each morning, students will work on a research project by conducting research in the library and with online data bases to find information about their favorite professional player. Students will have use a Power Point template to create a final presentation that they may present to the class. BizMovie 1.0 This real-world simulation gives students the opportunity to create animated movies using online MovieMaker technology, introducing them to basic programming as they start and run their own movie production companies. BizWorld In BizWorld, students learn the basics of entrepreneurship, business, and finance by exploring how the entrepreneurial cycle operates in the friendship bracelet industry. Students are divided into companies, with each student taking on a leadership role to support the team in designing, manufacturing, marketing, and selling their products in the BizWorld marketplace. Students can experience the entire entrepreneurial cycle in just ten hours as they create a revenue stream, deduct expenses, experience a profit or loss, create an income statement, and value their company. The impact the program has on children is vast -- from inspiration to creating their own companies to understanding the relevance of being successful in life and academics. Creative Writing Come join Ms. Johnson for some summer creativity. We will work on short stories, memoir, and poetry in a workshop environment. We will learn from mentor texts and imitate the creative techniques of master writers. Additionally, we will stretch our knowledge of writing conventions by reviewing key skills and applying those to our writing. Students will receive individualized feedback, and by the end of the session have a collection of summer work. If you’re interested in writing competition opportunities during the school year, this would be a great opportunity to start honing your creative ideas. Don’t Argue – Debate! No formal experience is necessary. The workshop will begin by covering introduction to public speaking and debate before covering the basics of argumentation, speech writing, research, and practice debates. At the end of the week, the students will participate in a one-day debate tournament where they will implement the skills they have learned and use the speeches they prepared. Each day of the workshop students will participate in interactive exercises that will build their public speaking skills and critical thinking skills. By the end of the experience, students will be able to: understand the basics of public speaking and debate through effective performance, organize a speech, understand the basic research process involved in writing an informative speech, and demonstrate ethics in research by citing resources. Genius Geology Learn how to become a real geologist! You will be able to explore the differences between rocks and minerals by observing the properties of rock samples and sorting them based on those properties. But whether your family is traveling to a different continent or kicking it in your own backyard, we’ve got a great new course this summer. James and the Giant Peach Students will explore the writings of Ronald Dahl’s masterpiece, James and the Giant Peach. We will read write a collection of journal entries involving the novel. Pre-Algebra Prep Get geared up for Pre-Algebra! We will spend a week practicing your math skills and preparing for middle school math. Over the course of the week we will research, read about, discuss, and debate several topics. Robotics Exploration NASA’s Spirit, Opportunity, and Curiosity rovers traverse and explore the face of the planet Mars. These are robots conceived to fulfill a needed task. They were designed, constructed, programmed, and activated by someone just like you - someone who is interested in tinkering and playing with a robot so that it will do your bidding. Playing with robotics just might become a career path - are you game? This is a middle school course that uses the Lego MindStorm NXT construction set to build program sensing-robotic creations using servo motors; various types of sensors; computer bricks. We will us Bluetooth technology for remote access to climb, throw, race, and explore through remote sensing. This challenge-based course aims to be a hands-on workshop format that focuses on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics - STEM. Ready… Set… Hike! – Tartan Flag Football Camp You know those fun games of flag football you have seen during lunch with Coach Barbee out on the field? Wouldn’t you like to come to camp and play those games for a whole week? Science Fair Prep The main research experience in the eighth grade occurs as students complete their science fair projects. This unit combines research skills learned in seventh grade English with the scientific method to produce a well-informed project. Finding a topic is the hardest part of a science fair project and sometimes students just need extra help focusing on what sorts of topics would be of interest to them and how to go about researching their topic once it is selected. This course will not only help students find a science fair project idea but also give them more individualized attention to learn about scientific concept behind the topic. Stand Up Paddle & Ocean Safety Camp Join us at the beach to learn the basics of stand-up paddle boarding. Each day will focus on a new skill teaching balance, control, steering, basic stroke technique, proper equipment and basic water safety. Young Engineers Have you ever wondered how bridges work or how to drop an egg off of a building so it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t break? If so, then this is the class for you! Come join the fun of working independently and as a team while designing, budgeting, and building toothpick bridges and egg drop devices. Teams work to design the strongest, lightest, and most economical toothpick bridges all while balancing a team checkbook and budgeting supplies. Through classroom lessons and hands-on activities, students will learn basic design and science principles related to bridges and buildings.
