6th Grade Campout I believe that the sixth grade campout was an amazing experience for all of us. Not only did we learn basic survival techniques, but we bonded with our classmates in extraordinary ways. For example, the people in our campsite bonded over a struggle to fall asleep, due to very annoying geese and people talking. In addition to our bonding experiences, we learned basic survival techniques. We learned cooking, shelter building, orienteering, and fishing. During all of these activities, we worked in teams. I believe that it was not only because of a surplus of sixth graders, but because in life, teamwork is vital in a world so divided. On the campout, we all experienced struggles with cooking, from falling marshmallows to burnt bagels. I even burnt a finger! However, it was a lot of fun. We ate bagels, s’mores, hot dogs, trail mix, and pretzels. However, the best meal of the campout was lunch on the second day. This was because you were allowed to eat whatever food you wanted. In the lion camp, the marshmallows were gone before I even got to camp and the rest of the food disappeared along with the marshmallows. We also got lost on the way back to the bus, so it was an adventure. We had to constantly turn around, but it was fun. After all of this, we got on the bus and began the long bus ride back to school. The sixth grade campout was an outstanding experience for all of us because we not only learned basic survival skills, but we bonded with our classmates in amazing ways; bonds that can only be formed in the wilderness.
Day 1 The sixth grade met in the amphitheater at 8:00 AM to load food on the buses and prepare to go to Mill Creek. Mrs. Murphy and the rest of the chaperones addressed the boy’s explaining to them the plan and what lied ahead. Before we left the bus, Mrs. Murphy had one last surprise for the boys. We each received a small, round piece of wood attached by a string to make a necklace. The wood necklace was handmade and wood burned by Mrs. Murphy.
The Eshelbrenner advisory in the amphitheater with wood necklaces.
Upon arrival to Mill Creek, we hiked up to the different campsites. The Eshelbrenner advisory was camped at the turtle campsite. We picked tents and tent mates and then had lunch. Lunch was comprised of tortillas, sun butter, and honey. The first activity that we participated in was camp cooking, we learned how to make a pizzadilla, a delicious combination of a pizza and a quesadilla.
The next activity was fishing. We learned how to use artificial bait and live bait. Even though we didn’t catch anything we still had fun. After fishing, we had a very short hike to a flat grassy plain where we were let loose to play and have fun. After that we had dinner (hot dogs) week took turns telling stories and roasting marshmallows. Mr. Mead gathered the sixth grade and told us a really great story from a book that has become a tradition to read now. Shortly after we finished reading the story from Mr. Mead’s book we played character bingo. We were all really tired after all the activities and sleep came easy. Day 2 The Turtle camp woke up refreshed after a great night of sleep. We comprised a breakfast of honey and sunbutter bagels, surprisingly it tasted great! The next activity was shelter building. We learned how to construct shelters so we wouldn’t get wet on a rainy day. We also learned how to tie knots and grommets in the tarps so they wouldn’t slip and fall, drenching the people under it. Mr. Northcutt taught the class and he also taught us about the different position of the tarps. If I would have had to sleep under the shelter I built, I would have gotten very wet!
After that, we went to orienteering, a class that Mr. Mead taught. We measured our stride length to see how long it was because we would need to know that when we were told to walk a certain length in some direction. We also learned how to use a basic compass. Then we spread out along a rope that had little pieces of tape that were set up as stations. There was a set a directions when departing a station that would bring to a different station and so on. For each station we landed on correctly we got 100 points. It was definitely not easy but, by the end of it, Reed and I got pretty good.
It was definitely a little bit sad to leave the tent that had kept me warm and dry throughout the night. On the bus ride home I was torn between two emotions, whether I should be happy that I am seeing my family again or be sad that my time with the Eshelbrenner advisory on this campout was over. Overall, the campout was a great success, I really felt like I bonded with my classmates and teachers. I look forward to the rest of the St. Mark’s wilderness program and learning more and more about the outdoors.

Congratulation t al competitor !
Ask Dr. Gabby Dear Dr. Gabby, We create limits for people for games at lunch, but we try to make it so a lot of people can play. It’s not fun with too many people, but some people are getting mad at us that they can’t play. What should I do? Sincerely, Anonymous Dear Anonymous, This is a tough question and I get it almost every year! It’s nice to think that people in the grade want to play together, but when there’s a shortage of equipment or space, the game sizes can get out of hand. The answer to this question comes down to fairness. People get upset when they believe that there is preferential treatment going on. In other words, if they are told they can’t join a game, but then they see someone else being allowed to join, that doesn’t feel fair. There are other times that students hold spots for friends who are still eating lunch, or may even be meeting with a teacher during the lunch period. That doesn’t feel fair either. Here’s my best advice for lunchtime harmony. Before the game starts, quickly establish the rules before you start playing…every day. If possible, choose an impartial set of referees that everyone agrees on (it is best if there’s one referee from each team). Play by majority rules – if only one person witnessed something and everyone else says it went the other way, let it go and keep playing. Who wants to spend their whole break arguing? Set the number of players ahead of time and make no exceptions. If someone isn’t there yet, then the people who are there get to play (no holding spots). If someone drops out, then the first person that asked to play at the start of the game can now join (no letting friends in ahead of others). If you really want to play a small game with just your friends, wait to start until you are all together, bring your own ball or sports equipment, and realize that others may still want to join you! When you stop to think how your actions might make
others feel, you’ll be way more likely to make the right choice and avoid hurt feelings.

This #9 seed upset #1 Xavier to make only two #1 seeds remaining in the tournament with a win, 7570. #13 Marshall vs. #5 West Virginia: Upsets are common this year, but for this match, this wasn’t the case. Juventus vs. Tottenham Hotspur: Juventus came back after going down in the first half, and scored two secondhalf goals. Juve will now play in the quarterfinals after tying the first match, 22. FC Porto vs. Liverpool: After Liverpool winning the first game 50 away, Porto impressed with a scoreless draw, but that was not enough as Liverpool cruised to the quarterfinal. Real Madrid vs. Paris SaintGermain: Real Madrid won the first game 31, and won the second game 21, knocking PSG out of the Champions League. Bayern Munich vs. Besiktas: Bayern Munich crushed Besiktas with a total aggregate of 81, winning the first game 50 and the second 31. Chelsea vs. Barcelona: After tying the first match at Chelsea 11, Messi scored two goals as Barca won 31. Sevilla FC vs. Manchester United: Sevilla went to Old Trafford ready and won 21, sending them to the quarters after the first leg being a scoreless draw. Shakhtar Donetsk vs. AS Roma: After Shakhtar winning 21 at home in the first leg, AS Roma won 10 in the second leg, giving them the advantage on away goals.
