1 & 2 Thessalonians Smyth & Helwys Bible Commentary

Linda McKinnish Bridges “What a gold mine this commentary is. . .It is also beautifully written, allowing us to enter into a deep conversation with a scholar who reads the Bible with her heart as well as her head. If I were to have but one commentary on these often overlooked books of the Bible on my shelf, this is the one I would choose. It is stellar.” —Leonora Tubbs Tisdale Clement-Muehl Professor of Homiletics Yale Divinity School First and Second Thessalonians explore the first-century Mediterranean world in which the Apostle Paul writes to the community of faith in Thessaloniki. It is a complex dialogue among the Thessalonian believers, the young missionary Paul, and the readers who would follow through the centuries. Known as the Thessalonian Correspondence, these writings give us a wide window into this ancient environment where Paul lived, worked, and taught. These letters also help us, the twenty-first-century readers, understand Paul’s perspectives on leadership, ethics, community life, and death. These letters encourage and challenge us, as they encouraged and challenged the community in Thessaloniki, to live faithfully and lovingly with one another as we go about our work and worship. Hardback, 320 pages, 978-1-57312-083-8 AVAILABLE September 2008

A Distinctively Baptist Church Renewing Your Church in Practice

Ronnie Prevost

February 2008

Paperback, 160 pages, 978-1-57312-502-4

$16.00

“A Distinctively Baptist Church is a timely, fresh book that merges the need for churches to understand the Baptist contribution to the Christian movement and the opportunity to help new generations of Baptists know the unique distinctives that shape historic Baptist life. It helps churches rethink how their life and fellowship ought to be shaped by who we historically have been.” —MICHAEL R. CHANCELLOR Pastor, Crescent Heights Baptist Church of Abilene

o many Baptists today have forgotten what it means—beyond the mode of baptism—to be Baptist. They have forgotten their heritage. Countless Baptist forebears bought and wrote that heritage with their blood. It is not so much whether or not we remember and honor their names; what is important is whether we honor the legacy they left us.

S

Ronnie Prevost is Professor of Church Ministry in the Logsdon School of Theology and Seminary of Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas.

Blessed Are the Jesus Chicks A Christian Mother’s Guide to Life, Love, and Work

Miranda Bradley Paper, 128 pages, 978-1-57312-503-1

January 2008

$15.00

ost women today are expert multi-taskers, hefting a skillet in one hand and a half-packed diaper bag in the other, all while emailing a client or boss. It’s a juggling act that can take a toll on the most organized person. Most women, though, are pretty good at keeping all the objects in the air because they know if the drop one, then someone or something suffers—faith, husband, children, or career.

M

Miranda Bradley is a native of Bossier City, Louisiana. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. Miranda spent seven years as a communications manager for a Christian nonprofit organization before launching her own communications business, Bcreative (www.bcreativetx.com). She now is a work-at-home mom specializing in copywriting for nonprofits and small businesses. Miranda lives in Georgetown, Texas, with her husband and two sons.

Love as a Way of Living William Powell Tuck Paperback, 128 pages, 978-1-57312-505-5

March 2008

$16.00

“William Tuck has done for our generation what Henry Drummond and C. S. Lewis did for theirs: he has written a book about love that is beautiful, wise, and bracing. It is full of interesting stories, rich reflections, and helpful pastoral counsel. The author vindicates his title by displaying how love is indeed a way of living—the faithful Christian way.” —FISHER HUMPHREYS Professor of Divinity, Beeson Divinity School

ithout question the word “love” sums up the essence of our Christian faith; we are commanded to love God, our neighbors, ourselves, and our enemies. Nonetheless, many Christians struggle with living by this high standard of love in a world filled with injustice, cruelty, war, and division. To love in the face of these realities seems difficult, if not impossible. Sometimes Christians are afraid to practice love for fear of ridicule or being seen as weak. Is Jesus’ ethic of love, as some people assert, unrealistic for the modern world?

W

William Tuck has served as both a parish pastor and seminary professor. He currently is the interim pastor at First Baptist Church in Raleigh, North Carolina, and a professor at the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond, Virginia.

But God Meant It for Good Lessons From the Life of Joseph

Ronnie McBrayer

March 2008

Paperback, 112 pages, 978-1-57312-504-8

$15.00

"Ronnie McBrayer is a gifted writer. He masterfully tells the story of Joseph which is one of the great stories of the Bible. My advice is to get this book and read it. Once you start, you'll have difficulty putting it down. This book is good!" —MILLARD FULLER Founder & President, The Fuller Center for Housing

onnie McBrayer’s exploration of Joseph’s story helps readers find themselves in these often overlooked pages of the Old Testament. However, this is not a “how-to” book. There are no keys for successful living or catchy alliterated principles to revolutionize your life. But readers who are trying to make sense of their lives, who are wondering what God is doing in some faraway heaven, or who feel that the chaos of life has little meaning, may discover a clue to what God is doing in their lives.

R

Ronnie McBrayer is a husband, father, pastor, and writer. He has served in pastoral leadership positions in church, healthcare, and nonprofit settings.

By My Own Reckoning Cecil Sherman

June 2008

Hardback, 288 pages, 978-1-57312-506-2

$24.00

“. . . What you have in hand is an ordered chronicle, a unique story, of a solitary human being—a man who arguably has been the most important Baptist of his generation, the most formative Baptist Christian of the past sixty years . . . who better than he can share a view from the inside of the Baptist family in this country since the 1950s? So with moist eyes and set jaw, Cecil bids you join him for ‘his story’—amazingly, a slice of our own free-church history as well.” —From the Foreword by W. RANDALL LOLLEY Former President, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary

y My Own Reckoning is Cecil Sherman’s gift of memory to those whose lives he has touched through his many years of ministry and service. In this much-anticipated autobiography, Dr. Sherman reflects on his life as a pastor, as a husband and father, and as a key figure in the SBC political controversy of the 1980s. More importantly, Sherman shares with readers the intimate history of his life and ministry, from his origins as the descendent of preachers and farmers, to his pastoral years, and ultimately to the tender love story of caring for his wife, Dot, as she fades into the haze of Alzheimer’s disease.

C. Ellis Nelson Paperback, 160 pages, 978-1-57312-523-9

November 2008

$16.00

"Ellis Nelson has thought longer and better about Christian education than anyone else on the planet . . ." —WALTER BRUEGGEMANN Columbia Theological Seminary

cGuffey’s Readers. Public school. Family prayers. In the 1800s, these were primary—and successful—strategies by which children learned to become Christians. Sunday school was developed to support what was already being done at home and in school. Today many churches still rely on the nineteenth-century model to encourage young people to become disciples of Christ.

M

C. Ellis Nelson, research professor of Christian education at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, has written many books and articles about the biblical and theological basis for Christian education. Dr. Nelson has been a research fellow at Oxford University and has lectured in many seminaries and universities in North America, Australia, and Europe. His book How Faith Matures was named one of the ten best religious books of 1989.

Elvis, Willie, Jesus & Me The Musings and Mutterings of a Church Misfit

Bert Montgomery Paperback, 128 pages, 978-1-57312-521-5

November 2008

$14.00

“Growing up outside the church in Washington, D.C., I had the typical stereotype of a Southern evangelical Christian—a stereotype that seems to have made quite a resurgence in the last twenty years. Having made my home in the South, it is people like Bert Montgomery who keep me from feeling like an outsider, and who remind me that evangelical doesn’t have to be a dirty word, but one that I can claim humbly for myself.” —OTEIL BURBRIDGE Bassist for the Allman Brothers Band

lvis, Willie, Jesus, & Me is a collection of short observations and reflections on life, society, faith, and church, with a rock-and-roll attitude. These reflections and observations cover everything from pain to politics, from cursing to prayer and family board games. Oh, and a whole lot about God, love, Jesus, and grace.

E

Bert Montgomery lives in Starkville, Mississippi, with his wife, Jency, and sons, Rob and Daniel. After serving in pastoral and youth ministry positions in Kentucky while a middle-aged seminarian, he now pastors University Baptist Church on the Mississippi State University campus. He has yet to meet Willie Nelson.

Steve deClaissé-Walford Paperback, 172 pages, 978-1-57312-524-6

November 2008

$18.00

". . . deClaisse-Walford, himself a pastor, offers specific, practical steps any church can take to transform its congregational ethos, engage its community, and develop a holistic ministry grounded in biblical principles. Need immediate help? Read Part 3. Want to know why it will work? Read the rest of the book!" —R. ALAN CULPEPPER Dean, McAfee School of Theology

holistic ministry church takes the call to “go into all the world” literally and interprets “preaching” the gospel as living the gospel—practically being the good news to those in need. Holistic congregations are deeply involved in their communities, especially among those marginalized by society—the poor, the hungry, the homeless, those subject to injustices, and those enslaved to addiction.

Clarence Jordan’s

Cotton Patch Gospel Luke & Acts Foreword by Tony Campolo

Introduction by Millard Fuller Paper, 176 pages, 978-1-57312-423-2

"For those of us in the twenty-first century, this little book makes clear the radical nature of Jesus' message. It helps us understand something of the disrupting impact that Jesus' message and the missionary work of his followers had on the world of their day . . . This book may entertain and inspire. But the goal of Clarence Jordan goes far beyond that. He wants to stimulate the rest of us who claim to be Christians to ask what Jesus would say if he walked among us today."

—Tony Campolo Regular Price:

$16.00 The Cotton Patch Gospel recasts the stories of Jesus and the letters of Paul and Peter into the language and culture of the mid-20th century South. Born out of the Civil Rights struggle, these now classic translations of much of the New Testament bring the far-away places of Scripture closer to home: Gainesville, Selma, Birmingham, Atlanta, Washington, D.C.

Professor Emeritus of Sociology Eastern University

As Jordan once wrote, “While there have been many excellent translations of the Scriptures into modern English, they still have left us stranded in some faraway land in the longdistant past. We need to have the good news come to us not only in our own tongue but in our own time. We want to be participants in the faith, not merely spectators.”

Smyth & Helwys

Annual bible study he Smyth & Helwys Annual Bible Series is a valuable tool for teaching specific books of the Bible. It contains solid scholarship, easy-to-read learner’s study guides, affordable books, and is linked to the Smyth & Helwys Commentary series. These undated Bible book studies each have a Teaching Guide and a Learner’s Study Guide.

T

In the Teaching Guide, each chapter includes teaching options, a suggested worship outline, and approaches for leading discussions. The study examines biblical background, history of interpretation, and the themes of spirituality, ministry, and theology. Books contain art images, photos from the Holy Land, maps, and much more.

The Study Guide is designed to enrich learning by serving three purposes: to educate the learner on major issues of appropriate interpretation, to offer an overview of theological themes, and to build the learner's Bible study skills by reviewing significant interpretations along with their themes.

Studying Acts may make readers feel as though they are stepping into a different world, a world of miracles, a world where God is alive and moving and doing remarkable things. How can that world intersect ours? How can the old story of people speaking in tongues and raising the dead come alive in a world where no one speaks in tongues and the dead stay dead? How can Acts be relevant to our lives and our church? Both the Teaching Guide and Study Guide are illustrated with art images, photos, and maps. The Teaching Guide also includes relevant lesson plans for children and youth.
