Catching the Worm Lisa Richards
With excerpts from Robert Louis Stevenson’s poem, “From a Railway Carriage”
5.43am
The modernised railway is a transport practicality; a commute. The beauty of the journey is far from actualised. The 5.53 am train on a winter morning is a much different journey from the classic exciting railway adventure. Some romanticise the idea of catching a train at an absurd time and embarking on such a journey, however the reality of this trip every day is far from it’s idealised concept. It’s cold, it’s dark, and there’s a good chance you’re either on the brink of falling asleep or pumped full of caffeine. Regardless, you don’t care about the journey, it’s the destination (and time of) that matters.
5.31am This is a series about the earliest train journeys of the day.
Faster than faires, faster than witches,
8.01am
7.35am
5.41am
Bridges and houses, hedges and ditches;
6.05am
7.01am
And charging along
6.08am
Like troops in a battle
7.33am
8.09am
6.45am
7.36am
Fly as thick as driving rain
8.21am
And ever again,
7.46am
7.47am
In the wink of an eye
Painted stations whistle by.
