Long Division festival June 7th-9th Welcome to Wakefield, and welcome to Long Division Festival. Rhubarb Bomb fanzine and Backstage Academy are proud to bring you this year’s festival, once again in the heart of our Merrie City. It has been a tough year that has seen beloved festivals, labels, shops and bands call it a day, all due to the financial strains of a tough business in an unforgiving economy. But we believe firmly in supporting the grassroots, and due to some wonderful and personal support from the Arts Council, JD Roots and The Co-operative, we have been able to make this year’s event the largest yet. It’s never been easier (or more fun!) to see the depth and breadth of the strong DIY ethic of musicians and artists in Wakefield So we thank you for coming to see us. Thanks are also due from me to the hardworking support I’ve had from Chris
Morse (Programmer), Ruth Offord (Press) and Matt Sidebottom (Design), as well as the amazing support from the venues, our volunteers and the students of Backstage Academy without whom the day wouldn’t operate. Final thoughts? Well, I can hand on heart say that this line-up is exceptional across the board, so if you are at a loose end, go see someone you’ve never heard of. They could be your new favourite band. Visit our merch stall in Drury Lane, run by the lovely people at Sound It Out Records. Don’t forget the aftershow party at Warehouse 23 with Ross Jarman as DJ. And most importantly, don’t forget there’s loads happening on Sunday at our Fringe Festival, including appearances from Simon Armitage and Andy Kershaw (details in this very programme). Wakefield is rising, without question. A year from now we will have a new 800 capacity venue called Unity Hall (the one with all the photos in the glass window, across from the theatre) and a few years beyond that Backstage Academy will evolve into Wakefield’s University. First up are local lads Crowds to kick off the proceedings with some alternative rock that is tailor-made for the radio. Imagine an angry Bloc Party jamming with a chilled-out Oasis and you’ll probably feel a bit confused - so it’s probably best just to come and watch Crowds.
The Scaramanga Six
Ghostpoet
Mercury Music Prize nominated Ghostpoet spans more genres than an IPod stuck on shuffle. At times he could be Roots Manuva rapping over Kid A, at other times he appears as a shaman preaching to the acid casualties of the 1989 summer of love. Now on his second album, Ghostpoet (real name Obaro Ejimiwe) has continued to garner critical acclaim through talent rather than through the toss a lot of rappers do. At times he appears to represent the post 7/7 paranoia of London and sometimes his lyrics seem as abstract as William Blake. Definitely one to watch.
Frogs will fall from the sky, locusts will plague the Merrie City and the Scaramanga Six will bring theatre and anthems from Winterfell (or Leeds, to be precise). Their last album was produced by Steve Albini, who has previously worked with Nirvana and the Pixies, which gives you an idea of their pedigree.
Middleman
Middleman contain enough natural serotonin to kill off the world’s entire drugs industry and put Walter White out of business. Someone really needs to tell the DEA. Morphing hip-hop, indie, pop and jumping up and down like an idiot, Middleman, who owe some of their education to Wakefield, have created more smiles than any picture of a cat in the history of pictures of cats. Bored, middleaged women beware; your pictures of cats may now be obsolete.

The Fall
The Fall need no introduction, but like Jo Whiley sycophantically slobbering all over anything sounding remotely like music, I will give them one. Picking a starting point is like looking at the night sky and choosing a favourite star. Following
a history that spans five decades of turbulence, classic albums and line-up changes, Mark E Smith now seems to have a settled band behind him. The unique theatre remains, but the only rotation seems rooted in the hypnotic post-punk grooves that provide a backdrop for the genius wit of their frontman. Legendary headliners? No question.
Too Many T’s
Too Many T’s are also representing Wakefield - to an extent - as one of them went to the same school as me (Outwood Grange innit). However, in Yorkshire there is no such thing as too many teas so I can only presume that the South can’t handle this hyper hip-hop party. Bring it on, I say.
That Fucking Tank
What a band. Proving that you don’t need a Philharmonic Orchestra to make a lot of noise, That Fucking Tank are a two-piece from Leeds with balls of steel and a guitar strung with strands of testosterone. You probably think that was a metaphor. It wasn’t.
Morain
Their name sounds a bit like Quiche Lorraine, but don’t be fooled, they don’t sound anything like a quiche, unless a quiche grew hands and vocal chords, got into the Cure and pumped up the chorus in a style that was catchy as hell. Then, and only then, would they sound like a quiche
The Spills
Wakefield’s The Spills had me when I saw that their MySpace page (yes, they have been around that long) was named www.myspace. com/bumthespills, but they have kept me with tune after tune of ferocious angst-ridden rock featuring supreme musicianship and the odd bit of screaming. See them live. At Long Division.
Aztec Doll
Aztec Doll come from warmer climates (Barnsley) but sound like they come from a mercilessly grim and cold place of eternal moonlight and leather jackets. Morphing the likes of Joy Division, PJ Harvey and Interpol this local four piece do “the goth-indie thing” like a languid motorcyclist.

Allo Darlin’
Finishing off 12 hours of music at The Hop with their third visit to Wakefield in as many years… Allo Darlin’ are a fan’s band, with a DIY ethos. Their self-titled debut was released on Fortuna Pop in June 2010 to widespread critical acclaim. Their second album, Europe, was Rough Trade’s best-selling record of 2012 and was highly placed in many best of the year polls, including Rolling Stone, Emusic and Rough Trade. They have spent much of the past three years touring America and around Europe, including sold-out tours of the UK. They are currently working on new material and plan to record their third album in the summer of 2013.

The Michael Ainsley Band
One of Wakefields most promising and prolific new Indie Rock bands. Bringing together Wakefield scenes old and new featuring members of Imp (Michael Ainsley), Piskie Sits, Runaround Kids, Retarded Fish and Homegrown. They’ve only been going about a year and have already released an ace debut album, supported The Cribs and played all over the UK.

Nine Black Alps
One of my personal highlights of last year at The Hop was the sell-out gig from Nine Black Alps. Their new album ‘Sirens’ out last year on super cool Leeds based ‘Brew Records’ was up there with their best work yet. Sam Forrest regularly plays The Hop with his acoustic solo side project and is a bit of a honouree Wakefieldian . They’ve supported Weezer, Biffy Clyro, Kasier Chiefs and BRMC on tour and played pretty much every major festival going and we’re delighted to have them playing this years Long Division.
New Vinyl
Stalwarts of the Wakefield scene. Their hometown gigs are nearly always sell outs so expect a good turnout for them at Long Division. Influenced by The Beatles, Stone Roses, Oasis and more they’ve played Leeds Festival and their songs have featured on Rugby League coverage on Sky Sports.
Blacklisters
Big favourites at The Hop and with most Wakefield bands. They’ve earned a reputation as a formidable live act through aggressive, confrontational performances riddled with dark humour. Their music has drawn comparisons to the Jesus Lizard, Shellac, Pissed Jeans & Kong.
The Exhibition
Anthemic Indie rock band from Barnsley for fans of British Sea Power and Editors. Signed to ‘Of National Importance Records’ they’ve supported the likes of Hatcham Social and The Kabeedies.
The Dissolutions
The Dissolutions are a 3-piece musical outfit that play rock ‘n’ roll and soul with a sprinkling of 60’s garage. They draw influences from The Sonics, Wilson Pickett, Elvis Costello and so many more! The Dissolutions includes members from bands such as Buzzkill, Milloy, Boxing Klub, Matadors, Brown Hound James, Thine, The Magnificent and Gagglewire!
The Do’s
Wakefield 2 piece on Philophobia Music. They destroyed downstairs last year so we’ve moved them to our more riff resilient venue upstairs for this years Long Division. For fans of Sonic Youth, Black Keys, Queens Of The Stone Age, Placebo.
Chapman Family
Another band which really impressed with their live performance at The Hop last year. They make an angsty, raw, cliché-free wall of sound which has gathered them an army of dedicated fans. If you liked Twilight Sad last year you’ll love these.
Sky Larkin
After a couple of years playing with Wild Beasts singer Katie Harkin is back with Sky Larkin. They have a new album out soon on Witchita (home to The Cribs) produced by John Goodmanson in Seattle and have just finished touring with Dutch Uncles. I don’t expect them to be playing venues as small as The Hop for much longer.

Ed Tudor Pole
Once considered as a replacement for Johnny Rotten in the Sex Pistols, as well as asking “Who Killed Bambi” in “The Great Rock and Roll Swindle”, Ed Tudor Pole (as Tenpole Tudor) also had 3 hit singles, including the joyous 1981 top 10 “Swords of a thousand men”. Following a blistering set at the Long Division warm up gigs Thomas Wilby Gang make their debut at the Festival proper. A fantastic live act taking their inspiration from classic American heavy blues and gospel sounds.

Recently featured on Alan Raw’s BBC Radio Leeds “Best of Unsigned Music”, The Sunbeams are a lo-fi, high energy West Yorkshire indie band with a glorious sound and a growing reputation. The perfect way to kick off the festival.

Olympic Swimmers
Proving that Scotland is eternally the best place in the world to produce music (after Wakefield of course. I like to think of Glasgow as the ‘Caledonian Wakefield’...) Olympic Swimmers came to our attention after riding high in Avalanche Records’ end of year poll in 2012. Somewhere between the distant poles of Shrag and Sigur Ros, their sound is glacial and gorgeous, epic and intimate.
Imp
For me, Imp are the sound of Wakefield. Whenever I am stuck somewhere watching an average band go through the motions to a busy crowd, I think of Imp and wish I could pull them through time and space, plonk them in front of the simpletons and say, right, what do you make of this?
Piskie Sits
Long awaited second album now in the can, Wakefield’s longest serving enfants terrible and purveyors of the finest pedigree of slacker-pop are feeling - and looking - more vital than ever.
Runaround Kids
Recipients of Rhubarb Bomb’s inaugural ‘Tru DIY’ award in 2012 for their run of singles and EPs, the now two thirds Wakefieldian / one third Glaswegian based super trio mine heavier, more claustrophobic seems from the same awkwardpop hole as Johnny Foreigner and their peers.
St Gregory Orange
After crowning performances inside Wakefield’s Cathedral and Theatre, a library should be a walk in the park for the big G. The atmospheric doodlings, part Arab Strap, part Why? Part the-best-thingyou’ve-never-heard, are now bolstered by a full live band. Misery never sounded so sweet.

Hailing from the small village of Sowerby Bridge in the north west of England armed with a collection of razor sharp pop gems, Three-piece Modeliste are a powerful band winning audiences over wherever they go with their charged up spacefunk vibes. Boys and girls, Team Modeliste is coming right at you, and it kicks like a mule.
This Many Boyfriends
A great band because they some how manage to give birth to songs free from pretension or ego; just simply as pure with intent as a new born child. Stripped back Indie-pop, at it’s most honest, humble and infectiously fun, these down to earth music obsessives have supported The Cribs and had Ryan Jarman in the producer’s chair for their singles. We like them!
The History Of Apple Pie Taking similar influences of peers such as The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, from shoegaze to ‘80s classic Indie, The History Of Apple Pie have managed to craft it into something utterly their own. With an edgier approach to dynamics and wall of sound choruses, they blow much of what has become known as ‘Twee’ clear out of the water. Their debut album Out Of View is one of the best things we’ve heard this year, or any year come to think of it.

Back by popular (and borderline obsessive) demand after a stupendously good show in 2012, Kid Canaveral promise to make your life a better place to be, with their super-sweet and effortless Indie-pop, tinged with Scottish awesomeness.
EAGULLS
Ferocious, primal guitar music at its most moving and feral, the Leeds based band mixes Sub-Pop influences, punk and hardcore into a massive yet special whole. Regarded as one of the hottest British guitar bands around right now.

Having anyone from New York wanting to come to Wakefield is a pretty cool thing. That phrase: pretty cool thing, is not just an extension of a Sonic Youth title, but also an apt description of everything Jeff has done. His strong DIY ethics, his comic book work, his self-created artwork and his constantly reinvented live show all combine into one humble but utterly inspirational character.
It’s a massive pleasure to have two of the finest (and friendliest) comedians in the UK at Long Division, recording a new episode of their Utter Shambles podcast. To list Robin’s projects would fill this programme alone, but you are perhaps most likely to have heard him along Brian Cox on The Infinite Monkey Cage. Josie, despite countless awards for her Edinburgh shows over many successful years, just seems lazy by comparison.
Clive Smith
With over 80 albums now under his belt (on 80 different record labels), Clive Smith is a true rock and roll survivor. Pioneering many new genres, he is a true visionary, and surely one of the great unsung heroes of the 20th century, or any century you care to name.
This Is The Kit
From Paris, via Brighton, This Is The Kit is the musical project of Kate Stables and are one of the most exciting finds I’ve come across this year. They’ve played with Jeffrey Lewis, Jose Gonzales, and The National, but it’s the utter perfection of the minute constructions of tracks like Two Wooden Spoons that is the real clincher; those moments when a performer can take your breath away by appearing to do almost nothing.
David’s lyrics often draw the most attention; perfect dissections of the most everyday of things, like Morrissey at his best, but in a more detached and poetic way. But the music is a work of gentle genius too. Basically, you either love them, or you’ve never seen them play.
Post War Glamour Girls
Punch ups at Leeds Festival with Green Day and European tour orgies with I Like Trains - if I were writing the myth and not the legend, these are the things of which I would speak. Whilst these nearly truths do express the marvellous trajectory these kings and queen of doom chamber pop epicness have travelled in the last twelve months, nothing will tell the tale better than a show in Wakefield, in our theatre. So be there, and witness the legend’s evolution.
The Wave Pictures
Led by singer and songwriter David Tattersall, The Wave Pictures have, over many years, earned a reputation of being one of the best bands in the UK. And they’ve done it in the most honest and complete way – by writing some amazing songs.
Howard Marks
What to say about such a legendary character? It’s tricky when the whole show is him talking about his life anyway. A down to earth boy from South Wales who ended up smuggling drugs across the world, became affiliated with the CIA and the IRA then served time in prison, before writing a best selling book, Mr Nice, and reinventing himself as a raconteur and campaigner for the legalisation of Cannabis. All of which perhaps gives you a false impression of this gentle, smart, witty and warm character.

A one man band in the truest sense of the word, Jonny’s Long Division session saw him effortlessly fill the vast expanse of Unity Hall’s main room armed solely with his acoustic, a mouth organ, bass drum and hi-hats. Just imagine what he can do in Velvet’s more intimate surrounding.
Buen Chico
Harry George Johns
Formerly one-half of Old Romantic Killer Band, Harry George Johns returns to Velvet having appeared here last December. He may be a lone operator, but as his verbal sparring with apathetic audience members that night showed you’d be a fool to ignore his stripped down Post Breakdown Blues.

They continue the fine tradition of melodic Dee’s Long Division tips in Rhubarb Bomb 4.1. punk emanating from the WF postcode, assuredly High praise indeed. Soulmates Never Die ask that you “Love Me Like A Comic Book”, as established fans of the medium how can Rhubarb Bomb say no and neither should you. Fuzz pop ideally suited to

Witch Hunt
Leeds based duo whose deathly-blues has garnered interest from BBC Introducing. Whilst a series of intriguingly packaged physical releases, seeing the light of day on Dead Young Records, have been eagerly snapped up by their growing fanbase. Louisa’s haunting vocals bring to mind the
likes of Melissa Auf Der Maur, PJ Harvey and even Glen Danzig’s wounded howl; meshing seamlessly with Chris’. Whilst their trusty laptop adds untold layers of vastness to their sound. If you weren’t looking enough to catch Witch Hunt’s mesmerising set as part of the Long Division warm-up gigs then make sure you make amends today.

Hailing from the Sheffield tradition, Neil has worked with leading lights across Sheffield’s music scene including touring with Richard Hawley. Bitter sweet songs, broody and bold Neil has long been a favourite of ours and is unquestionably an immensely talented singer songwriter.

Our first signing on Hee Haw Records - ‘Dead Flowers’, a new Americana / Indie band from London. Gothic tales of love lost and never found. A sound combining the growl of Dan Michaelson, the gloom of Bill Callahan on a downer and the grit of Tom Waits. We believe in this band and so should you.
JASMINE KENNEDY
Potentially the next Tracy Chapman, this young musician has immense talent and an endearing charm. She has shared stages with the likes of Seasick Steve, Joseph Arthur & RM Hubbert. It has been said that she is “armed with a voice to stop you in your tracks”.
RAEVENNAN HUSBANDES
Following a rare illness Raevennan Husbandes picked up her guitar again and found herself the winner of Next Big Thing 2012 (previously won by Ed Sheeran). Husbandes has counted herself incredibly lucky this year - opening for Lisa Hannigan on tour in Ireland by personal invitation, and collaborating with The Unthanks.
RM HUBBERT
Solo guitarist from Glasgow who writes about love, death, friendship, mental illness and a dog called D Bone, although it’s not all as depressing as it sounds. With three Peel Sessions under his belt, he has supported the likes of Nick Cave, Tortoise, Mogwai, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Franz Ferdinand and Twilight Sad as well as touring extensively around the EU in his own right. His current album, Thirteen Lost and Found, features collaborations with Scottish musicians such as Aidan Moffat, Emma Pollock, Alasdair Roberts and Luke Sutherland and has been nominated for the 2013 Scottish Album of the Year Award.
THE SHAKING WHIPS
The Shaking Whips, the male-female pairing of Kieron Wright and Laura Burn-Acaster from Sheffield describe themselves as a cross between a late 1950’s Cadillac and a Fisher Price toy. Their music is sparse and spacious combining electric guitar and dual vocals. Sharp song writing which is emotionally engrossing and subtly humorous.
THE WHISPERING PINES
Lo-fi alt-country project of singer songwriter M G Boulter who is also the front man of The Lucky Strikes and an integral member of Simone Felice Group. Uncut have described his music as “Gorgeous”. His album, ‘The Water or the Wave’ is released on 8th July by Harbour Song Records.
Jamiesayssmile
jamiesaysmile is the brainchild of artist / songwriter Dan Hayes. Whilst the one-man recordings give a big ‘full-band’ sound, today he’ll be translating his cerebral yet heartfelt ‘melodic-indie-pop’ into an intimate acoustic set. With a Digital EP imminent, followed by an album release, it promises an exciting year for jamiesaysmile.

’m back in full effect, trying to hold myself erect. After a year off last year (I’m sure you noticed) I’m back to give you some tips for this years Long Division. I’ll ignore the headliners and I’ll largely steer clear of Philophobia bands that are playing as if you’re reading this you should be well versed with them and planning on catching them anyway (if not check www.philophobiamusic.co.uk to check which of our roster are playing). That said I am going to urge to go see Buen Chico. Incredibly celebrating their 10th year, they are still too much of a hidden gem. They have just released their best collection of songs in The Patron Saints Of Lost Causes EP so if you’ve not heard them before get yourselves along to Velvet at 15:45. It’s mid-afternoon, the beers kicking in, the sun is shining, what a perfect time to have a break in a beer garden watching the pretty
people in their summer clothes? Wrong. You want something loud and angry. You want Blacklisters at The Hop (upstairs) at 15:30. One of the best live bands I’ve seen in the last few years and the best front-man you’ll see all day. At least until you go see Post War Glamour Girls at the Theatre (18:15). I’ll admit I gave them a wide berth for a while. This was largely (solely) based on their fans not sticking around to watch Imp at a Futuresound gig a few years back. I was an idiot. Don’t you be an idiot too. This band are great. It’s probably Harry George John and his sparse, beautiful semi-acoustic blues at Velvet at 16:30 next, followed by returning Leeds favourites Sky Larkin upstairs at The Hop at 19:45. I think I’m right in saying this will be the first time they’ve played in Wakefield for six years. If they’ve got rubbish in that time (which I very much doubt) you
can always nip to Drury Lane and catch The History Of Apple Pie (21:30). I know what you’re thinking; the band name is going to be the most interesting thing about them right? I thought that for a brief second before I heard them, but it’s certainly not the case. There’s only one way to follow that. And that’s with a tattooed Glaswegian playing flamenco guitar. If that description makes it sound odd and even put you off it really shouldn’t. It is one of the most beautiful and emotive sets you’ll see for a long time. I was fortunate enough to see RM Hubbert five or six times last year and I wish I’d have been able to see him more. Get yourselves down to The Orangery at 20:15, you won’t regret it.

Opened by The Ossett Ukulele Philharmonic, a thriving community music project, the event will then see Simon take the stage to perform a series of readings, before being joined by his fellow band-mates from his other life as the singer with The Scaremongers, all presented in the classical and beautiful surroundings of Wakefield’s Theatre Royal.
Mi Mye Live Album Recording
6pm, Drury Lane Library, £7 Greenmount Studios began it’s life in 2000 on the landing of an old tower in a house in Wakefield. Created by Jamie Lockhart (Mi Mye) and Lee Smith (Middleman), former Bretton Hall students, the studio in this incarnation ended up recording a plethora of local talent, including demos for good friends The Cribs, The Research, The Old House and many more. And for one very special day, as part of the Long Division Fringe Festival, the studio will move back to Wakefield to the now empty Drury Lane Library, in order to record a live Mi Mye album, with full band. To a strictly limited audience, the band will perform, with every second commited to tape before your very eyes. We invite you to join them and see how the whole mad process works and be part of a unique gig experience.

Drury Lane Library For one day, as part of Long Division’s Fringe Festival, volunteer led Dewsbruy New Picture House are bringing their plush velvet seating to Wakefield and setting up a pop up cinema in Drury Lane Library. Indie cinema in Wakefield - awesome! They are showing two films, both priced at just £4, with 100% of that going to the cinema. We hope you take this unique opportunity to support a fantastic and ambitious project. Sound It Out 4pm (12A) A portrait of the last surviving independent record store on Teeside, originally released as the official film of Record Store Day. A fantastic place with an eccentric cast of characters, this is a film that celebrates the independent, and shows that even in (or perhaps ‘especially in’) deprived areas, that ethos can flourish. Searching For Sugar Man 8:30pm (12A) Wonderful documentary following two fans of legendary, but highly cult, musician Sixto Rodriguez as they attempt to find out whether rumours of his death are true or not. Won a Bafta and an Academy Award in Frebruary 2013.
Faceless Theatre Company
12-2, The Hepworth, Free Faceless will be exploring the world of sound using recycled & up-cycled materials inside their pop up workshop venue, Space to Create. Participants will be able to create their own small instruments to take away and make some noise.
Jeffrey Lewis Exhibition 12:30pm, The Orangery, Free After performing the previous evening, Jeffrey Lewis will be, as the title suggests, showing off some work from his sketchbooks. As fans will know, Jeffrey Lewis is just as enthusiastic (and talented) an artist as he is a songwriter. Will the aid of his trusty projectors, New Yorker Jeff will talk about his work and inspirations. The event is free to attend, and is (probably) suitable for all ages.
