D-school Lets learn about ART! D-school was a very interesting experience for me. I enjoyed talking to new people on the first day of this class because it made me more open to being myself and expressing myself through art. It was nice to know that there are people very similar to me in this class and that I could bounce my ideas off of them. On the right page I have sketches of what would help Ally and I create long lasting friendships with our roommates. Our problem during this project was that we did not want our friends to feel like we were “buying their friendship. Eventually, Ally and I came up with the idea to create a sentimental gift.
sketches for my ideas listed below and above
The sentimental gift that I came up for Ally is a scrapbook. We thought this was a very good solution to our problem. It was thoughtful and kind and it was not a gift you could get from a store so it made it very sentimental. It was perfect. However, This project was a little challenging to me when it came to putting the process book together. I am quite the perfectionist and working in a short amount of time was hard for me but I managed to create something that would work great for Ally and me.
Final Work It was challenging to cut out the cardboard in a quick amount of time that is why it is not cut straight and does not live up to my full potential.
However, I am very proud of the cursive on this scrapbook. I like the flow and motion of the letters.
Dot-line I enjoyed the next project in this class which was the dot-line project. It was interesting to find out what “gestalt meant and that I could create a sense of gestalt with this project. Gestalt is the ability to make associations, recognize patterns, and group smaller objects together to form a larger unit. One word can have so many meanings. It can also be created so many different ways, it is endless. As I was working with my table partners, I realized one of their work was a portrayal of stability because of only a few of the parts on the paper. If I were going to continue to work on these letters I think I would play around a little bit more and take more risk.
This project made me realize there is a lot of thought that goes into abstraction it is not just putting shapes on a piece of paper. I believe I will use the abstraction and gestalt ideas more in my images now because I learned how big of an impact they can make on a project.
Final Work The work on the left symbolizes rejection.
The work on the right portrays joy. I would like YOU to take a guess from the three words listed below what the image on the left is portraying. a. oppression b. longing c.exhaustion The correct answer is... C. exhaustion.
Object-iterations Object-iterations was a really fun but frustrating project for me. I learned a lot about myself as an artist. Such as, I like to use color over black and white. As I was working on my project I realized how a giraffe can be seen in so many ways than what it is typically seen as. Normally, when I picture a giraffe I picture a long neck and long legs but I tried to stay away from the ordinary. It was enjoyable to see the piece come to life and show a giraffe in an nteresting way than I would normally perceive.
I also, enjoyed learning how to use photoshop. Now I know how to use the curves tool, lasso tool, paint tool, make backgrounds etc. I am a business marketing major so I believe knowing how to use photoshop will be very helpful in my future career.
Final Work My final work on the right is something that I am very proud of. I worked extremely hard on this project especially with each individual piece. I had a few challenges along the way like working with backgrounds, making certain stuff stand out more over other stuff but I eventually got the work where I wanted it to be.
Letterforms
Letterforms was a very fun project for me. I have always been interested in type and printmaking so I thought this project would be a really fun experience. (and I was nothing but impressed). Although, it was challenging to not get fingerprints on my first drafts and to figure out how to not have as much ink surrounding my letters I ended up doing drafts a few times until I became happy with my final work.
I struggled with fingerprints and ink around the letters in this piece on the left.
This piece on the right is my absolute favorite. I was able to utilize my creativity skills and show how I portray goofiness. I enjoyed making the word into glasses and just having fun with the project.
Final Work
While working on the piece to the right I realized sometimes simple is better. I started with a clown drawing and had the clown have the eyes but I ended up making the eyes look goofy and i believe it works!
With my final work I realized there is a lot more meaning to a word than you may think. One word can have so many meanings. It can also be created so many different ways, it is endless. As you can see from all of the different ways I wrote “goofy.
This was my least favorite out of all four pieces. All of the letters came out great except for the “f” and it ends up lookng like the word “gooy.” :( If I were going to continue to work on these letters I think I would play around a little bit more and take more risk. Have more fun with it and portray the words in a crazier way.
PSA Poster This was one of the more challenging projects for me. We were to create poster with just type. At first I had this great idea to make the type into a clock but it ended up being hard to read. I also was not supposed to include anything other than type and I believe the clock did not really resemble a clock without the big hand and little hand in the middle.
I tried to make visual hierarchy by bolding words that may be more important I also liked using the negative space of the orange background to form words with the negative space behind. With this projoect I belvive I learned a lot about InDesign and how to use it with ideas that I can take with me in the future work force.
The work below is still in process...eventually I switched up a lot and was happy with my final work on the right.
Final Work
Ruth Ansel I have always been interested in fashion and design and while i was researching designers I saw Ruth ansel did both of these and more! At first I was a little nervous to present about Ruth Ansel but I feel like that is human nature. I knew I prepared a lot and I gave it my best shot. I thought it was cool that I was able to inform the class about such an amazing designer and that they might consider looking more into her work.
To the left are my notes I took to prepare for my presentation.
My works cited from all of the information I received about Ruth Ansel.
Ruth Ansel (pictured above)
What I love about this Bazaar magazine cover is that it was a very daring piece for the time it took place in. The model was photographed in a hat and no one liked how it look. Ansel concealed the hat with a striking hot pink paper cut out. The cut out resembles a spage age helmet. I thought this concept was very interesting for the moment in time especially because the first man landed on the moon a few years later.
Another magazine cover I loved is the one to the left. Ansel shows change and beauty all in one cover. This may not be the usual perfect body, perfect hair it shows a new way of looking at beauty and i love it!
Additional Questions Q1. What is the difference between a good life and a significant life? To me a good life is a life that you wake up everyday, go to your usual job, sit in a meeting, drive home in your prestigious car and go to sleep. A significant life to me is someone who lives out their values and makes a difference. For example, a few of my values are openmindedness, reliability and loyalty. I would use my openmindedness to breathe in the fresh air and think about how lucky I am to wake up happy and healthy. Head to a job that I love and that I can make a difference in. One where they can rely on me being a great employee. Lastly, I’ll be loyal to my friends and family and make them realize how much they are valued.
Q2. What is the greatest failure you’ve experienced in your life? I believe the greatest failure in my life so far is being “too caring.” I care too much about other people, my friends, family etc. it is hard to have “me” time. Something that I will definitely try to work on is saying “no” and not trying to please others as much as I do. In the future I want to try to focus more on my well-being and health.

I hope you enjoyed learning about my goofy, fun and creative art projects! Make sure you check out volume 2 coming, January 2020.
Meet the artist
I hope you enjoyed looking at my semester art adventure. A little bit more about me is I am currently a senior at Saint Norbert College. I am majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in marketing. I have a lot of love for people (family) (friends), art, dogs, sports and living each day to the fullest. After college I plan on either moving to Nashville with my roommate or staying in the good ole’ cheese curd, beer loving Green Bay, Wisconsin. My dream would to eventually be the marketing executive at The Green Bay Packers. Special thanks to Professor Ries for showing me how to be the cool Dr. Kaftan that I am ;)
YEET.
