4 POPULAR MYTHS ABOUT DIABETES Diabetes might be a disease so common and prevalent, but it is also one of the most misunderstood diseases. The facts and figures that we know about this disease are often modified and altered. Even those who are suffering from this disease are somewhat unaware of it's actual causes, effects, remedies etc. There are a few very common and popular myths about diabetes that we are simply unaware of or that we do not believe on! Some of such myths are as follows. MYTH 1: Consuming too much of sugar causes diabetes! Well, you still must be wondering that no, this cannot be a myth. But fortunately, it is! If you eat too much of sugary foods, then you are at risk of many other diseases already. Then why blame it on diabetes. Eating too much sugar is no way a good idea, no matter what. Now, coming on diabetes. Yes, the increase in blood glucose level raises your risk of diabetes, but only if you maintain a good balance between your physical activities, daily diet and sugar intake, you are away from the risk of acquiring diabetes. Diabetes is not jut about sugar, sugar and sugar. It's rather about the lifestyle you owe and the kind of diet you take. Some amount of sugar is very much important for your body to maintain the glucose levels and function properly. MYTH 2: Diabetes is a no serious disease! Diabetes is serious or not, that depends on the way you take it and deal with it. Diabetes is like a silent demon that gradually does it's work. And this is the reason why most people do not understand the intensity of it's ill effects on our health. Diabetes is like one big lock to other small and big diseases such as heart diseases, kidney problems etc. Once the lock is open, you are exposed to all such other diseases. It might not bring you fever, vomiting, weakness etc on immediate basis, but it gradually ruins your very health from inside, hence making you all the more unwell. But the good thing about diabetes is that this lock has a key to it which is entirely in our own hands. We can do a lot about not letting it affect us at all. And this is possible only through maintainance of a healthy lifestyle, that includes good diet,regular physical work etc. MYTH 3: People with diabetes must shun sugar and starch! This is again one myth that is so much popular that people refrain from taking sugar even in their regular cup of everyday tea. However, if you are a tea addict and drink more than 3 cups of tea a day, then indeed it's a good idea to shun sugar, but not otherwise. Some amount of sugar and starch everyday, is vital for proper functioning of your body. To completely shun sugar is not a very good idea. We require our daily energy intake and the people who are diabetic require it even more. And we cannot do without some amount of sugar, which also gives us energy.


MYTH 4: Fruits have natural sugars, so they are safe! Fruits are definitely natural and safe. But not exactly in case of diabetes. Eating too many fruits a day, and that too the very sugary and starchy ones can be harmful to you. However, sugar in small amount is important for your body, but if you go on to entirely depend on fruits for your daily meals, then it is no way going to help you despite being natural and full of fiber and other vitamins and minerals. Some of the fruits such as papaya, guava etc can be good in diabetes. These were the four popular myths about diabetes. Such myths have been doing rounds for quite long now. But it's always better to be late than never.
