Camel Leather Material Exploration: Kutch leather craft is a means of business
and livelihood for many villages in Kutch, Gujarat. The leather craft was traditionally used to make harnesses for camels and horses, musical instruments, storage containers and footwear. Craftsmen also make objects of modern utility, such as wallets, bags, stationery and lamp shades.
Kutch,Gujarat. Being a top choice government handicrafts schemes, Kutch, Gujarat is recognised for its embroideries, costumes and jewellery. The art individuality comes with employing technology and aesthetics in tune with the urban culture, retaining their lineage of skills appropriate to their quaint village setting. Sumrasar, a village in the periphery of Kutch encompasses a community formed by Pakistani immigrants during the 1970’s riots. Equiped with skills from their Pakistani roots, the community relied on their artwork as it growingly captured urban markets.
Leena Ben, gained mastery over the art of Suf embroidery and plays a major role in developing the aesthetic design to the leather products.
Mr. & Mrs. Anchal Bhai
Anchal Bhai, he has been working with camel leather since childhood and has mastered the craft. He has his workshop built in his house. He has been kind enough to take some time out of his busy schedule and help me understand the various stages of working with leather.

Trim
All the strips and piecies are cut out.
The desired color is coated over the pieces and left for drying.First coat of paint over which there is a coat of oil. There are about 6 color varients available.
The holes are pierced for the stiches. Along with this, the motifs are also embosed onto the leather at this stage.
Once the holes are made the sewing is done with mai. Mai is thread greased with honeybee wax which makes the thread sticky.
After the sweing, the whole strip then goes through ‘pittai’, which is beating the leather. This helps to straighten out and set the stiches.
To the end, the extra leatehr is trimmed out for finish.
Color and oil is applied with sponge.
