Synopsis Vadodara, one of the most cosmopolitan cities of the country is an important industrial, educational and cultural hub which exhibits several institutions of national and regional importance. It is titled as the ‘Sanskari Nagari’ during the reign of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III. The diversity in the styles of architectural sites in the city is not manifested even to the residents of the city. The historical stories, rules, monuments are not known by the people and are demolishing with time. To give recognization to these aspects, my project focuses on development of a Graphic Design System- a brochure along with a boardgame incorporated within particularly for the Gujarat Tourism Department to promote the city’s cultural importance cost effectively retaining the overall essence of the city. Intense visual exploration, skill building in terms of illustrations, story telling, looking for local context in design while questioning the role of a print based outcome in this digital era and following the design process shaped my Design Project- 1 experience. The entire journey made it clear to me that design is anything but a non-linear process. Also, the significance of an iterative process to reach a polished outcome is known to me. The skills and understanding gained has given me the confidence to take up a Graphic Design project in required area and reach an outcome fulfilling the need by following the design process. National Institute of Design The National Institute of Design (NID), India is internationally acclaimed as one of the foremost multi-disciplinary institution of design education and research. It is autonomous institution under the aegis of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. NID has also been declared as ‘Institution of National Importance’ by the Act of Parliament, by the virtue of the National Institute of Design Act. The establishment of NID was a result of several forces, both global and local. The late 1950s saw a confluence of these forces, and this time would be a significant one for Indian culture and education. This was a time of reappraisal and reconstruction in a newly independent India. A young nation was confronted with the mammoth task of nation building, of balancing age old traditions with modern technology and ideas. Revolutionary experimentation in the arts, architecture and design were all taking place at the same time. There was a search for the Indian identity across all aspects of life. The mandate for NID is to offer world-class design education and to promote design awareness and application towards raising the quality of life by and through education to create design professionals of excellence to help meet India’s diverse design needs.

A year at NID A line is a dot that went for a walk. 2nd May, 2019, a dot started walking the way she always wanted to. On a warm summer afternoon in the state of Gujarat, I remember my cold feets and palms, sitting aside my roomie in my dearest hostel room 214 of GEC Gandhinagar Girls’ Hostel. The result said something I was hoping for since a very childhood. In no way did I anticipate the information explosion, the work culture, the diversity and the spirit on campus to engulf me and become a part of me, as if it always was, so soon. I imagine NID as a little heaven of free thoughts, acceptance, creation and endless pursuit of knowledge. The last one year here have been a wonderful starting point which have filled me with a sense of endless wonder, for which my thankfulness knows no bounds. As a young student, I feel extremely lucky to have had a chance to study here and learn so much just by virtue of being in the space, surrounded by the people who have made this place what it is. I’m pretty sure that the enthusiasm and curiosity of this dot is constantly heading upwards and will surely reach an infinity one day.

SENSING INTEND

Brief Overview Sanskari Nagari Vadodara Vadodara, also known as Baroda is the third largest city of Gujarat. Baroda resides on the bank of river Vishwamitri. After taking over the British in Gujarat, the Marathas took the city under them. The Gaekwad clan of the Marathas made Vadodara as their capital and Maharaja Sayajrao III laid foundations of the modern Vadodara. Instead of the urbanization, people of Vadodara hold their cultural values which is reflected in every festival celebrated in Vadodara. The stories behind Vadodara being called the ‘Cultural Capital of Gujarat’ is still unexplored by the Nagarvasis. Though Vadodara is called ‘Sanskari Nagari’, Cultural Capital of Gujarat, there are many unexplored places and stories which are not discovered even by the residents of the city. The objective of this Design Project would be to explore the undiscovered heritage and culture of Vadodara and convey those findings to the nagarvasis through perhaps an illustrated guide of the city.

DESIGN PROJECT- 1

SENSING INTEND

About Vadodara The history of Vadodara lies in a charter of 812 that identifies it as Vadapadraka - a village attached to the nearby town of Ankottaka. In 600 AD, severe flooding of the Narmada River forced the inhabitants to move to the eastern side to a village known as Vatpatrak, which later developed into Vadodara. By the 10th century, Vadapadraka replaced Ankottaka as the main town where the province was mainly Hindu-dominated with Hindu kings ruling until 1297. The Gupta Empire, the first power in the region was taken over by the Chalukya Dynasty. Finally, the kingdom was annexed by the Solanki dynasty, where the reins of power were then snatched by the Delhi Sultans. The city was ruled for a long time by the Sultans, until they were overthrown by the Mughals, whose biggest problem were the Marathas, who eventually took over the region. Retaining a high degree of autonomy even under the British rule, Vadodara continued its sovereignty right up to Independence in 1947. Vadodara, the cultural capital of Gujarat celebrates all traditional festivals in a unique and exciting way. Also known as Sanskari Nagari, i.e. Cultured City, Vadodara is the most sought after location for the dance style known as garba in the entire world. People inhabiting in the city are also seen speaking different languages - apart from Gujaratis and Marathis, a significant population of North Indians, Rajasthanis, South Indians and Bengalis have settled in the city.

SNEHA MAJUMDAR | M.DES-19

Adding to the cosmopolitan identity of the city, all these various associations and community bodies come together to showcase unity and strength . The typical cuisine of Vadodara consists of rotli, dal or kadhi, rice, and shaak/sabzi (a dish made up of several different combinations of spices and vegetables , which may be either spicy or sweet). Vadodara cuisine varies widely in flavour and heat, depending on a person’s taste as well as the region to which they belong. An important industrial, educational and cultural hub of western India, the city exhibits several institutions of national and regional importance. While its major industries include petrochemicals, engineering, pharmaceuticals, plastics, IT and foreign exchange services, Vadodara also has some interesting city sights like Aurobindo Ashram, Nazarbaugh palace, Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum, Tambekar wada, etc, but the main reason for coming here is the stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site of Champaner and Pavagadh. Amongst numerous other irresistible attractions dotting this fabulous city, is the famous Pavagadh Kalika Mandir and the priceless art collection at the Fateh Singh Museum and Laxmi Villas Palace.

SENSING INTEND

The 5 Why’s Why have I choosen the project? After returning home due to the lockdown during COVID-19, I sensed that there is no common platform- app/ website/ published material mentioning all the famous eateries of Vadodara. A little research made me realize that even the stories behind Vadodara being called the Sanskari Nagari are getting lost. Choosing to work on this project was my take to give recognization to the stories of the city.

Why do people need to the know the fact behind the title given to the city? Vadodara is know to be the kingdom of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad and is synonymous to the word “education”. But the title ‘Sanskari Nagari” was honoured to the city after rule of the Maharaja. There are many stories serving the fact which combinedly justify the title. These stories are getting eroded without which the title hold no justification.

Why is the project important?

Why will people want this guide/kit?

1. to unturn the facts behind the city being called the Sanskari Nagari and creating awareness amongst the residents of the city as well as visitors

Any resident will want this book to refer to for knowing the best eating places in the town. Visitor will not have to face any difficulty finding places to travel. Places which are not getting recognization holding the potential to will get promoted. Rickshaw walas, tourist agencies will have a catalogue to show to their tourist.

2. to give recognization to places holding some speciality 3. to give recognization to heritage monuments in the city which are getting demolished with time along with the stories behind them. Why is Vadodara called Sanskari Nagari? There are many stories behind the title earned by the city. This question needs to be answered on the basis of research as there are no specific answers.

Design Innovation Process The design innovation process starts with the real- by observing and learning from the tangible factors from the real world situations. Then we try to get a full understanding of the real world by creating abstractions and conceptual models to reframe before we evaluate them and implement them for their acceptance in the real world. The fluidity in thinking between the real and the abstract is required.

INITIAL IDEATION

Understanding Content and Context Intend of the Project

Collected Content

To make people aware of the story behind Vadodara titled as ‘Sanskari Nagari’.

I have too much information and that must be narrowed down keeping in mind the intend of the project.

Survey Analysis

HISTORY OF THE CITY The story behind Vadodara being titled as the Sanskari Nagari

The reason behind the title “Sanskari Nagari” is not know by people and they have assumed that it is only because of the diverse festivals and cultures celebrated in the city. Outsiders have least idea about the title. Many people of the city are not even aware that this title is honored to the city of Vadodara before Independence. People are not aware of the stories associated with various monuments in the city.

TRAFFIC ISLANDS Story accociated with the names of Char Rastas derived from animals and birds FESTIVALS CELEBRATED The diversity of culture in the city and the enthusiasm in celebrating all festivals PLACES TO VISIT Historical places of cultural importance which are no more talked off are losing their heritage values

TO FULFILL THE INTEND AND SOLVE THE PROBLEMS ANALYSED IN THE SURVEY, THE CITY MUST BE BRANDED AS SANSKARI NAGARI, HISTORY OF THE CITY AND THE HISTORICAL PLACES MUST BE FOCUSED ON FOR TAKING THE PROJECT FORWARD.

FRAMING THE STORY

Simplifying Content Taking forward the ideation of content to be considered for the project, I researched a little more about the history and monuments for a strong and authentic content.

Here are the maps explaining how the city has evolved in different reigns one after the other. Analysing this content was a milestone in my project to proceed further.

JAIN CITY - HINDU CITY - ISLAMIC CITY - MUGHAL CITY - MARATHA CITY - MARATHA BRITISH

Evolution of Ankotakka 2nd Century BC- 6th Century AD ANCIENT ANKOTAKKA EXTEND: 1000m

• Present day’s Vadodara has its roots in Ankotakka, a settlement that came on the western bank of Vishwamitri river • Due to severe floods in Vishwamitri River in 600 AD, the inhabitants moved to the Eastern side of the river to a place called Vatpatraka

Evolution of Baroda Capital of Gaekwad Empire 18th Century AD • The eighteenth century witnessed the disintegration of Mughal authorities. • During the reign of Aurangzeb the Mughal rule started becoming unpopular, specially due to its religious policy. • As a consequence the Marathas started invading the Mughal territory. • These invasions of the Marathas, in some parts of Gujarat were welcomed by Hindus.

• Damajirao, son and successor of Pilajirao defeated the Mughal armies and conquered Baroda in 1734.

JAIN CITY - HINDU CITY - ISLAMIC CITY - MUGHAL CITY - MARATHA CITY - MARATHA BRITISH

Maratha- British Rule 19th Century AD • In 1802, the British intervened to defend a Maharaja that had recently inherited the throne from rival claimants. • Baroda concluded a treaty with the British that recognized the Kingdom as a ‘Princely State’ and allowed the Maharajas of Baroda internal political sovereignty in return for recognizing British ‘Paramountey’, a form of suzerainty, where the subject of foreign affairs was completely surrendered. • The greatest period in the Gaikwad rule of Baroda started with the accession of Maharaja Sayajirao III in 1875. In addition, a new era of progress and constructive achievements in all fields began. • Maharaja Sayajirao III, who ruled from 1875 to 1939, did much to modernize Baroda, encouraging education, a library, a college, and model textile and tiles factories, which helped to create Baroda’s modern textile industry. Modern Baroda is a great and fitting memorial to Maharaja Sayajirao.

SNEHA MAJUMDAR | M.DES-19

• It was the dream of this able administrator to make Baroda an educational, industrial, and commercial centre and he ensured that his dream would come true. For this reason, the city is also referred to as Sayaji Nagari (the town of Sayaji). With all equal attention was paid on the public health and sanitation the State tried to took all the measures possible for the betterment of people of Baroda State. • On assuming the reins of Government, some of his first tasks included education of his subjects, upliftment of the down-trodden, judicial, agricultural and social reforms, building a network of railways to connect areas of his dispersed territories, His educational and social reforms included, along others, ban on child marriage, legislation of divorce, removal of untouchability, spread of education, development of Sanskrit and ideological studies, religious education, encouragement of fine arts and his total commitment to free and compulsory primary education, which placed his territory far in advance of contemporary British India.

CASE STUDY

Tourism Promotions To understand the different aspects of a place taken into consideration while directing a promotional advertisement to convey the specialities and uniqueness of the place to the tourists,

I studied the tourism advertisements of several states and festivals which helped me proceed with ideation of elements which can be considered to represent Vadodara.

Madhya Pradesh Tourism

In this TVC, the shadows of hands and arms, set against a stark background, take the shape of animals, birds, trees and monuments found in the state, to the words of the jingle ‘MP ajab hain, sabse gajab hain’. Shadow Puppetry is used as a medium to create the commercial as it is an art form of storytelling and goes very well with the rustic aura of Madhya Pradesh.

SNEHA MAJUMDAR | M.DES-19

‘Dil Hua Bacche Sa’ ad uses bobble-head dolls along with several indigenous toys to view MP from a child’s perspective. Combined with a young voice in the background score. It says ‘Dil Hua Bacche Sa’ which focuses on MP being the heart of India. Targeted at families, the spot advocates Madhya Pradesh as the destination having wildlife, shopping, fine cuisine, and landmarks of spiritual importance.

SANSKARI NAGARI VADODARA

065

Even though these promotions are exclusive of real images and videography, they very well communicate the overall essence of the place or festival by means of elements, mediums and

techniques used in creating them. The eminent features of the subject is taken into consideration for narrating stories of the subject effectively.

MP Tourism- Jalmahotsav

Rajasthan Tourism

Continuing the ‘Dil Hua Bacche Sa’ campaign, the TVC has brought the water elements alive to denote the festival. The stop motion film, which took about three months to complete, was shot with over 700 water colour paintings, where the key frames were painted by children.

Sand amination is used as the first thing associated with Rajasthan is sand. Sand sculpting is used for this commercial. As sand changes form therefore it is easier to rope it in animation as it can be moulded into any shape.

Even the words in the song are childish and only the sound of water drops and Ghatam (a clay tumbler) are used to create the music.

It show every paramount essence of Rajasthan and tell the audience that you may spot something beautiful in every minute beauty of Rajasthan- ‘Jaane Kya Dikh Jaye!’

During the Mughal Rule, walls were constructed around the territory of Vadodara for protection against invaders. As the city has extended over time, these gates still exists in between the city area known as popular landmarks. Neither the history behind the gates is known to people, nor is it given recognization.

Vadodara is named after the word ‘Vad’ meaning Banyan Tree in Gujarati. This is because of plenty of Banyan trees growing on the bank of river Vishwamitri.

SNEHA MAJUMDAR | M.DES-19

Banyan tree is called ‘Vad-Dada’ in Gujarati as it has a long life of upto 250 years.

DESIGN PROJECT- 1

COLLECTING INSPIRATION

Artforms of the Place Illustrations are a perfect go between — able to provide the emotion and human connection of photos, while distilling the imagery to a neutral flavor which can be used in a much wider range of

possibilities. For exploring illustration style for my project, I did a vast visual referencing of the various artforms of the area and gained inspiration. Here is the list of artforms:

Mirror Mudwork

Patchwork

Clay craft is ingrained deeply into Gujarat’s ancient tradition and since then has continued to enchant the world. Gujarat is known for its Terracotta, mud mirror work which has both scared as well as aesthetic appeal. The wet clay molded in different shapes and sizes is an artistic expression of the vision and correlation of the society. Clay craft is also known in Gujarat as Contemprary Mud work in which, attractive wall pieces with small mirrors are made.

Applique is done by using different patches of fabric, beautiful forms of floral and animal designs are prepared for quilts, hangings, modern household products and apparels. So by piecing cloth together as in quilts, different patterns are made by applying cloth of different colors. Multicolored covering of jigsaw pieces formed of geometrical shapes creating tensile texture and visual treat, is the impression one gets while seeing an applique or patchwork.

Terracotta Work

Pithora Art

The quintessential clay pots to a variety of clay figures and toys like horses, cows, bulls, buffaloes are the items which are very essentially a part of Indian pottery. In Gujarat, tribes in the Dangs make and worship their own clay gods. Since pottery is made out of clay, which is an environment friendly and recyclable material, it is an art that will survive the ravages of time!

Pithora paintings are ritualistic paintings done by the Rathwa tribes of central Gujarat. These paintings depict the main deity called Pithora and a procession displaying his accomplishments. When kept in homes, they are believed to bring peace, prosperity and happiness. These are also believed to be an old method of cartography. Pithora painting is abstract description of surrounding.

STORY PLOT

Storytelling Traditions of India Telling stories is more than just a fun activity. It is a way of preserving the culture and beliefs of a tribe or community and passing them down to the next generation. That is the real significance of oral traditions.

However, storytelling does not need to be limited to oral recitation. It can take form through drawings, paintings, dance or even puppet shows. India’s storytelling traditions are as diverse as the culture of the country.

Kalam Pattu

Sanjhi Art

This offering is performed for the blessings of Gods like Bhadhrakali, Ayyappan, Vettakkorumakan, Serpent God, etc. After Koorayidal and Uchappattu, Kurup does the Kalamezhuthu (drawn on the floor using five colours).

Sanjhi art is the traditional art of stenciling from Mathura, Krishna’s hometown. Known for its inherent spiritual implications that reach beyond immediate aesthetic appeal, it is considered to be one of the finest arts of spiritual expression.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Storytelling through Boardgame In storytelling games, players are provided with conceptual, written, or pictorial stimuli which must be incorporated into a story of the players’ creation.

I intended to communicate the entire history of Vadodara which makes it the most cosmopolitan city and a cultured one too through a boardgame (leading to an interesting way of conveying facts).

There are 2-3-4 players at the start of the game. Your wait for getting a ‘6’ on dice in your turn.

Start playing once you get a ‘6’ on dice.

Once you start playing, you are in 200BC at Ankotakka where you stay untill you reach 600AD.

Vadpatraka was named so becaused of the presence of a lot of Banyan Tree in this region.

If you rescue yourself from the flood, you enter Vadpatraka in the west of river Vishwamitri.

In 600AD, a flood in Vishwamitri strikes Ankotakka. If you get to step here, you die. Go back to start.

You earn a Banyan Tree- ‘VadDada’ when you stay here for a while.

and SO ON... By the end of game, you collect 5-6 such souvenirs and finally you win.

FEEDBACK

Review-2 • The eyes of Vad in the illustration is connoted as sleeping. Make it meditating eyes • Use a darker shade of green for the background of the Game designed for the steps in the game to stand out, increase the contrast • Use black colored Horse for the token(Goti) to play the game • An extension can be made giving more details about the monuments and history

Learning Outcomes The Design Project- 1 has been a very insightful project in terms of understanding and exploring the context in which Graphic Design functions. I learnt to reflect, relate and apply the learnings from the previous courses to arrive at a graphic design system through a very iterative non-linear process. I also learnt finding Design Opportunities, Research through telephonic means, surveys and talks, Information Collection for Contextual Study, Analysis, Synthesis, Iterations to refine design solutions, Validation of the outcome, Prototyping the design solution, User Testing and alterations along with the documentation of the entire design process followed.
