SNEHA MEHTA Hello,

I am an interior design graduate from ISDI Parsons Mumbai. I believe in hopeful and empathetic design which has a positive impact on others. My strengths lie in design that fulfill the purpose of being practical and efficient. I am intrigued by simple solutions and details that add a lot of character to an object or space. Curiosity has made me a better learner and does not limit my passion for designing towards just spaces. I love the craft of fabrication and experimenting in the workshop. I look forward to learning more and challenging myself to think in alternative ways. I love animals, dance and lemons. I am also fond of reading, watching and sometimes solving mysteries.

Shades Of The Spectrum

Shades of the spectrum is an academic research aimed at the relationship of space with an individual with special needs. Key words: //mind //flow and accessibility // intangible emotion

THESIS STATEMENT

Space not only caters to the physical aspects of a being, but also aids the mental health of a being. Hence, this research and investigation contributes to rehabilitation spaces to enable the

mind to

connect to deeper intangible aspects of one’s being.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE

To investigate the lifestyle and routine of specially challenged individuals, focusing on the mentally challenged adults (18+ years) to identify possible areas of intervention concerning ease of living, convenience and overall quality of life.

WHAT’S SPECIAL NEEDS? Definition: “The individual requirements (as for education) of a person with a disadvantaged background or a mental, emotional, or physical disability or a high risk of developing one.” Special needs is an umbrella term for an array of diagnosis.

A special needs individual may have

delayed development of the brain causing them to have learning disabilities or serious cognitive impairment.

SITE

Sulabha Special School is located in Tilak Nagar, Chembur, Mumbai. Sulabha Trust is a non-governmental organization started in 1979. It is a 7 storey building including the ground and terrace. It accommodates 108 students in school, 20 additional students for vocational training and 20 external students for therapy. The total staff strength of the school is 25 people.

The illustration above shows the existing zoning diagram of the space showing the placement of current functions and programs. The first illustration shows the area surrounding the site. This indicates the circulation and other elements such as buildings, trees and roads around the site. The illustration on the left, shows the sun path around the given location. The direction of the sun helps the design to allow maximum natural sunlight within the space. This illustration also shows areas that have access to direct sunlight and areas that do not have access to natural light.

ZONING DIAGRAMS

This design has focused on incorporating nature, easy accessibility, better circulation and a space that keeps your mind in ease without much complexity. The approach towards the design was to be more functional in terms of the layout and have simple informative graphics for easy navigation in the space. The space should be able to make the users feel confident and safe to move around by themselves. The colours in the space are used in a manner to add life to the space but also be informative in certain areas. The design consists of soft floors and filtered light in order to avoid distress to students who are sensitive to light. The design promotes easy ventilation in the space by avoiding full height walls and also promotes easy movement in the space by the absence of doors in most places. The design mainly focuses on the interiors however keeping the exteriors in mind. The furniture is soft edged and flexible that allows the space to be adjusted and used in different ways. Flexibility is something that’s been kept in mind in order to promote multi-functionality in a space. Hence, the design focuses on simple details to benefit the navigation in the building as well and improve the quality of working in the space.

WORLI VILLAGE The brief for this project was to explore real housing parameters and designing spaces for lower income groups. The requirements of the social housing : //exploration and research of existing housing typologies. //economic and energy efficient design strategies.

CONCEPT The design was based on a simple concept of subtraction and addition. The concept was carried forward by subtracting parts of a cube in order to create various patterns and structures. These cubes were then combined to create a play of masses with negative and positive spaces. This concept was further strengthened through the play of light and shadow. These

shadow

patterns

were then implemented in the design to create various spaces suitable for specific programs and functions.

SITE

The site for this project was a given area located in Worli village, Mumbai. Post first hand research, the given area had to be designed to accommodate 18 occupants.

DESIGN DETAILS

The original occupants of the worli village have a particular lifestyle which, highlights the aspect of a close knit community through daily interaction and communication. Hence, the focus of the design was to create multiple interaction spaces. This is achieved through creating open spaces and openings within closed spaces that encourage visual communication. The design also incorporates play of levels while one is moving through the space in order to engage the occupants with the space. The direction of the sunlight plays an important role in order to bring out the play of light and shadow within the space.

SITE WOMEN’S INDIA TRUST Women’s India Trust is an organization for underprivileged women which, encourages them to make use of their time and talent. The organization has two workshops located in Panvel and Mahim respectively. The women in the organization spend their time and talent by making various hand made products like : Toys, block/screen printing, cloth bags, paper bags, envelopes and decorative household items. These workshops consist of office, workshops, lavatory, lunch room/ recreation area, shop and a pantry. The design needs to cater to these functions and programs as well.

FINAL DESIGN

This design focuses on the emotion and experience of the user within the space. The users should be able to feel comfortable and at ease in their workspace. The users are women coming from underprivileged backgrounds and therefore, an overwhelming space could be restrictive and demotivating. To overcome this aspect, the design incorporates grounded details like low seating, narrow spaces and sharp angles. These elements bring out the concept of intimacy and comfort. The design in many ways also leads the path of a user, which stimulates the circulation pattern in the space. The angular walls orients the way a person would move in the space.

SITE PLAN

Form exploration led to various languages and styles in the initial iterations. Taking the two strongest elements in these iterations : Flow & Angles, the design went forward with connecting the two dots as they are quite contrasting in nature. These elements were chosen based on the intent to incorporate the context in the design.

CONCEPT

The project aims to effectively understand the concept of space as an abstract yet embodied idea, the idea of human body and it’s relationship with space, which also includes the basic idea of circulation and movement. It also includes understanding spatial organization and its close connection to program.

NOOR The brief for this project was to design and fabricate a furniture piece and their relationship with space. The requirements of the design were: //fabrication and functionality. //emphasis on innovation and aesthetics. //geometry and material.

CONCEPT The concept of designing a table lamp was inspired by bioluminiscent sea creatures. The initial exploration was mainly driven by forms derived from these sea creatures which were mostly organic in nature. Eventually, moved on to material exploration and achieved the ambient light quality with fiberglass and decided to take it forward. Soon, after trying to achieve an organic form with fiberglass we decided to be mainly driven by the nature of the material. By doing this we took a simple geometric form i.e. a circle, and experimented with subtraction and addition of the same form to create a collection. Eventually, the decision was to combine fiberglass with other materials as well, which would help in concealing the light fixtures as well as add to the aesthetic of the table lamp. In our collection we combined fiberglass with two major materials : Wood and Metal.

MATERIAL E

Material exploration ranged from organic and flexible materials to more rigid materials i.e., wood, rubber tubes, PVC tubes to fiberglass sheets and fiberglass powder.

EXPLORATION

PROCESS

Post material exploration, the fabrication on the lamp included making of moulds for the fiberglass to set in a required shape. The moulds were made of wood lined with transparent tape for easy removal of the product. These moulds included grooves for the lighting fixture as well. Right: Lighting fixture detail of the lamps.
