2nd year Design studio| 3rd SEM | 2017 Site: Tagore Circle, Gandhi Bazaar The Gandhi Bazaar is a One-Stop destination. It is a crowded bazaar, full of life where a variety of activities take place. The site is a green box at the end of the Gandhi Bazaar. It is dull and lacks life and strikes a huge contrast from the Gandhi Bazaar.The rag pickers, the newspaper sellers, the fruit and flower vendors, the pooja stores and the eateries.

BRANCHING

The project intervenes to increase useful interactions through active participation of the crowds. This urban center can provide aspace for people to come together to innovate, create and connect.The pavillion is an extension of the Gandhi Bazaar- a walkway with various activities from the bazaar. Thus. it is a mini-bazaar in itself. It is designed to be temporary in nature. The grid of Basvangudi

CLIMATE RESPONSIVE ARCHITECTURE District Court, Mangalore 4th year Design studio| 8th SEM | 2019 Site: Town Hall, CBD area of Mangalore The site is surrounded by government buildings on the east and a busy market on the west. A large playground, the Nehru Maidan is towards the south. It has been an important location for cultural functions and political gatherings apart from sports activities. The site is triangular with the Gandhi park at one edge.

Mangalore has a tropical monsoon climate; the climate here is classified as Cfb by the Köppen-Geiger system. Avg temperature range- 27 °C to 34 °C Humidity is approximately 78 per cent on an average, and peaks during May, June and July. Winds are strong and mainly westerly and south-westerly in the monsoon season.

The park and the maidan are conected and Gandhi Park is brought to the building and all the way to the maidan.

A series of courtyards form the major axis that guides the litigants. This axis connects the park to the maidan.

“Do cities destroy other habitats and ecosystems? Of course. Do cities cause local extinctions of many species? Undoubtedly. We never built them as habitats for any species other than ourselves...Surely, if we build cities with intention, with niches full of unique resources, many other species will come on their own, and over time will adapt and evolve into unique urban creatures” Coral Reefs of the Land | Madhusudan Katti Article 11.4 Current Conservation Nature has become a contained object which has been pushed away from cities. It exists as isolated pockets: lakes, parks, a green belt, a national park or even someone’s balcony. In order to experience nature, one has to visit these places. Urbanisation has led to missing links and lack of shared knowledge from one system to another. Small pockets of parks not connected to other parks lead to gene decay and even animal-human conflicts. This similarly gets mirrored in our cities as well- a lack of communication within different systems. There is an urgent need to realise the importance of the interdependant connections in ecosystems and allow more biodiversity to thrive in cities. THESIS QUESTION What role does architecture play? How can architecture act as a catalyst for change or be an useful aid in spreading awareness for conservation? How can the building become a part of the ecosystem? Buildings tend to be thought of as static edificies that remain the same over the decades, interacting little with their environment. Can they be treated as more dynamic and interactive structures? Can a symbiotic relationship be achieved by a regenerative approach? The project will attempt to adopt regenerative architecture through the following principles: 1) Co-existence and Interdependence 2)Regeneration through whole system integration- the site, the systems, energy, the building, flora and fauna 3)Eliminate the concept of waste 4) Rely on natural forces 5) Co- Evolution of the whole system THESIS DISSERTATION: CITY AS AN ECOSYSTEM

KHAZANS Khazans are coastal wetlands of Goa. They were reclaimed from mangrove forests, probably in the pre-Christian era by an intricate system of dykes, sluice gates and canals and put to multiple productive uses such as agriculture, aquaculture and salt panning. Khazans- is a self-operational system, utilizing tidal, hydro, and solar energy.

LEARNING LABS A holistic approach to learning. Whatever is learnt in classroooms can be experimented on the field. Data collected from field visits can be analysed.

The design allows field learning through the use of learning labs- pavilions with information kiosks, seating area near the fields and skywalks near the mangroves.

RECREATIONAL VALUE OF KHAZANS-MAAND Throughout Goa each village has Maand. A Maand is a space of about 100 sq. mts. for the cultural observances of the village, with perhaps a tree on it. It is a sacred place like a public square for communities to assemble for recreation, amusement or entertainment, performing arts, mainly singing and dancing, and other outdoor events. Festivals like Shigmo were celebrated. Sadly, this multi-faceted tradition largely died out in the mid-90s. An attempt is made to revive the recreational value of Khazans.

THE ROLE OF ART IN THE FIELD OF CONSERVATION

Art has been a useful tool for spreading awareness for environmental conservation. Through the medium of art, a larger group of people get to understand and appreciate the workings of nature. It is easier to communicate the issues as well. This role of art is explored in the project through the information galleries. The knowledge is shared as paintings, illustrations, graphics and comics.

BAMBOO OUTHOUSE Good Karma Farms, Alibaug 5th year Internship| July 2019- Jan 2020 Office: Put Your Hands Together, Mumbai (Areen Attari and Shahveer Irani) Bamboo acts as the principal construction material. Bamboo forms the flooring beams, columns, beams and rafters. A wooden platform sits on a stone foundation. The platform is made of wood upcycled from old ships. The walls were prefabricated off site. A wooden frame with wattle-daub panels and plastered with mud after the entire structure is assembled on site. The Bamboo Outhouse at Good Karma Farms has two structres - a workshop space and a small bedroom.

KHAR SE PYAR Girilal Chowk, Mumbai 5th year Internship| July 2019- Jan 2020 Office: Put Your Hands Together, Mumbai The site is on a corner plot at an important junction in Khar, Mumbai. After being abandoned due to property dispute, the site turned into a garbage dump right in the middle of the city with people throwing away food waste, construction debris, etc. It became a hub for rag pickers and continued to be used by pedestrains.

The initial reaction was to clear the “dumpyard” and make a compound wall around to prevent any further waste disposal. Using the existing debris, stones and other materials a beautiful gabion walls was thought of. Owing to the food waste in the debris, the idea was discarded. Instead, a rammed earth wall that supports greenery was proposed.

RAMMED EARTH SAMPLES C a s e D e s i g n Wo r k s h o p , M u m b a i Office: PYHT, Mumbai The firm collabrated with Case Design for a project based in Goa. The samples were prepared for a workshop with Brussels Cooperation Architects (BC materials). Material research was conducted in Goa and then material samples were made. These building blocks are made of laterite and earth.

WATSON WICK BL ACKWATER TREATMENT Good Karma Farms, Alibaug The Watson Wick system allow the nutrients present in black water to be utilized by plants. It uses pumice to filter and decontaminate blackwater. The solid waste turns into underground compost. Water wicks are constructed about about 24 inches below ground, beginning with 12 inches of pumice, covered with about 6 inches of sandy soil, 6 inches of planting soil, and a few inches of mulch on the top. ILLUSTRATIONS AND COMMUNICATION DESIGN Dakshin Foundation International Year of Artsinal Fisheries and Aquaculture 2022: The illustrations were created on the occasion of IYAFA 2022. These illustrations highlight small scale fisheries, fishing communities, their cultural heritage, sustainable fishing techniques, crafts and gears.

ATLAS OF NOMADOLOGY Batti Chokha, Lucknow Research Collaborator| Feb 2022- ongoing Office: Chaal Chaal Agency (headed by Kruti Shah and Sebastián Trujillo-Torres) The Atlas of Infrastructural Nomadology project focuses on the documentation and mapping of movable urban structures. The project started with a series of site visits, surveying of structures and interviewing owners of the devices. The data thus collected is now being transferred to drawings and 3D models highlighting constructive frugality, the architecture and the movement of nomadic devices. This documentation would serve as an advocacy tool to legitimize urban informality. understand the role of self-managed infrastructures in the city. DA STA N G O I : B A M B O O PAVI L I O N Qaiserbagh, Lucknow Organisers: Idha Labs Year: 2021 Team: Devaki Kesh and Sneham Pandey The objective of the competition was to build a bamboo pavilion that would be a socially inclusive space situated in an urban center. The pavilion would raise awareness about bamboo and other sustainable building materials.

Dastangoi means storytelling. The pavilion is an expression of space-making that weaves together many architectural stories from a city of rich cultural heritage.

Site: Lakshman Park, Qaiserbagh Complex Various buildings of high heritage and cultural value are present in the immediate context. Hazratganj, a commericial hub is close by and some residential complex exisit around the site. The pavilion becomes a starting point for heritage walks. It is a place of transit in itself, for people travelling to other destinations The transit character results in a flux of people who visit for a very short period of time. Thus, the pavilion caters different programs at different times of the day.

Baradari literally means 12 doors. The use of Baradari is observed in many old heritage buildings in Lucknow which allow for the free flow of air. The pavilion expresses this concept through entrances, bamboo blinds and niches on the wall.

A prominent element of Nawabi architecturethe arch-is explored as the main structural members. The evolution of an arch was explored using bamboo to replicate stone. The plan was modified to enclose a courtyard inside.

SCALE X SURREALISM Poster Design This series was inspired the works of Chinese artist and photographer Di Liu. The particular image was of a giant (surrealistic) orungatan superimposed into an urban setting. While studying architecture, the understanding of scale- of objects, buildings and the cityhave given rise to new perspectives. This understanding is applied to imagine what animals would look like roaming in our cities. How tall is a giraffe? How huge is a whale? Could adding animals next to famous buildings highlight their granduer? Animals thus become the main characters of these images and hope to spread awareness about endangered species and inspire everyone to work towards regeneration. The image with the penguins uses sattire to suggest how climate change could force certain species of penguins to adapt to a different “lifestyle” in order to survive. PLANTS, PEOPLE AND PLACES Podcast Series Collaborator: Pillow Shots (Brainchild of Shakshi Singh) The Plants, People & Places series focuses on the relationship between community, urban spaces and the natural environment. In this podcast series, important issues like the ill effects of rapid urbanization in Global South, ecofascism, systemic destruction of healthy ecosystems and the importance of traditional knowledge systems have been introduced. These topics are closely discussed through the story of Loktak lake in Manipur. Loktak lake was declared a Ramsay site in 1990. The Loktak ecosystem is a fascinating system with the naturally forming phumdis, the floating homes and its unique flora and fauna. It is home to the only floating National park and an endangered species of deerthe Sangai. The illustrations highlight the interconnection between marginilized communities, traditional knowledge and the threats to ecosystems. BIOMIMICRY: HEXAGONS Elective The beehive is an efficient home for the bees, where they can live, store food and take care of newborns. It is airy, lightweight, uses minimal material and is strong! The beehive’s internal structure is a densely packed group of hexagonal prismatic cells made of beeswax, called a honeycomb.

A honeycomb built from spheres, pentagons, octagons would have gaps that would require extra material for packing. There are only three geometrical figures with equal sides that can fit together on a flat surface without leaving gaps: equilateral triangles, squares and hexagons. MUSHROOM LAMP Fungi and Mycelium In his book Entangled Life, Merlin Sheldrake mentions how coal miners in the nineteen century used bioluminescent mushrooms growing on wooden pit props to see in the dark. He mentions the species Panellus stipticus which can be used as a reading light when grown in jars. ‘ It was like a little lamp standing on the shelf at home.’ The lamp takes inspiration from bioluminescent mushrooms and the glorious gills of mushrooms. The objective of this project would be to imitate the glow of these mushrooms in the form of a nightlamp. These images heighten the beauty of the gills. Thus, the focus of the lamp would be on the underside detail.
