Mayor’s Message - Mayor Barbara Bender

The summer event season is upon us and the team at Experience Snellville is working hard to bring you family friendly and fun events. While the Beach Blast was washed out due to weather, the Towne Green is rocking with concerts, Food Truck Friday and the Snellville Farmer’s Market in full summer-time swing. Be sure to check out the magazine for upcoming event dates and mark your calendars so you don’t miss a minute.

The Grove at Snellville Towne Center is buzzing with activity with kids enjoying the splash pad and green space. Be looking for some initial activities in the area as The Grove team starts to activate the space. The exterior construction on the market building beside the library is complete and the city is in final negotiations with an exciting tenant for the first floor that will add more food and fun in the area. Be looking for a formal announcement in the coming weeks.

The Parks and Recreation department cut the ribbon on the new maintenance building to house mowers and other equipment to keep the park in shape. The existing buildings located in the center of the park near the current park office and soccer fields will be demolished soon. According to a former city council member,

Snellville Public Works

Help keep water supply free of pollutants

Water flowing into the storm water drains along our streets is released directly into local streams, detention ponds and waterways. It is important to our environment that we strive to keep the water free from pollutants and waste that is harmful to our local waterways. Pollutants and non-storm water material flowing into the storm drains is called an illicit discharge.

The City of Snellville Public Works asks residents to understand and be mindful of the damaging effects of illicit discharges into our waterways

TYPES OF ILLICIT

DISCHARGES:

•Improper disposal of auto and household chemicals.

•Spills from roadway accidents or vehicle leaks.

•Improper disposal of yard and pet wastes.

•Construction site sediment.

there were discussions of tearing down these buildings way back in 1990 – 30 years ago! Good things do come for those who wait and our team at the park has certainly had a lesson in patience!

We had to do some redesign of the park community center to help reduce the cost to get closer to the budget for this building. It is truly amazing to see how much building costs have increased over the past three years and they are not coming down. We still need to close a gap of approximately $5 million and we are looking for grants and other funding sources to keep moving forward on the center.

When traveling around town, be sure to put your phone down and pay attention. Our streets are busy and, unfortunately, many drivers are not paying attention. That text message is just not worth the aggravation of an accident or the heartache of injuring someone.

Safe travels to all those heading out on summer vacations. I hope you all enjoy a relaxing summer!

Schulzes retiring after 15 years of dedicated service

Many thanks to Kurt and Gretchen Schulz who not only spearheaded the Snellville Farmers’ Market since inception in 2010, but have been the market administrators for the last 15 years as volunteers.

These two volunteer extraordinaires have worked tirelessly through the years creating an award-winning farmers’ market, providing the community with a producer-only market that offers locally grown produce and other items including meats, eggs, honey, baked goods and variety of other food items.

Many new cultural food vendors have brought a new vibe to the farmers’ market as well.

Gretchen and Kurt have worked hard to maintain a number one farmers’ market for the community to enjoy, but after 15 years of early Saturday mornings, the Schulz’s are retiring as market managers.

They have certainly earned a Saturday to sleep in late.

Snellville Farmers’ Market

Summer season sizzling at SFM

It is hard to find the words to describe how fortunate I feel to have been chosen to work alongside such an incredible group of people every weekend. Thank you to Kurt and Gretchen Schulz for giving me this amazing opportunity to connect with the great citizens of Snellville and carry on their legacy … it is truly an honor! As our “extended season” market ends, we want to say a special thank you to all our hard-working vendors, dedicated volunteers, and of course our faithful customers who came out in the cold, rain or shine, week after week … the market could not be such a huge success without all your participation!

Opening Day of the Summer Season Market was better than ever! We saw many of our cherished seasoned veterans and we are pleased to welcome some new vendors bringing fantastic new products and flavors we know our customers will love.

Meet Peter and Joy Narayan, owners of Traveler’s Respite Farm. While not a traditional farm, the couple aspire to live a more sustainable lifestyle – growing their own food, eggs, and dairy in hopes of feeding themselves and to give freely to ministries they work with and those in need. We are thrilled to announce they will be bringing to the weekly market freshly made specialty pastas, along with fresh garden herbs, spice packets, eggs, goat milk soaps, lotions and lip balms. If you have never had fresh pasta, you are in for a real treat! Stop by for a visit and sample the soft and subtle texture of this culinary delight. You will be hooked for life!

Another new and exciting vendor is Dorotheria Manuel, owner of DOMA Chocolates. You have never seen or tasted such

amazing chocolate bonbon delicacies … ever! With a different variety each week, Bananas Foster, Cookie Butter, Key Lime Pie, Espresso and Dulce de Leche, Peanut Butter and Whiskey Caramel, Orange Dreamsicle, Salted Caramel Brownie, and the list goes on. Choose from four to 16-piece custom assortment box, so there is plenty of opportunity to please everyone in the family. You will never grow tired of these sweet confections! Oh, and did we mention, Dorotheia is the sweetest person you will ever meet!

Also new to our lineup is Al Sham Sweet Syria, authentic Syrian cuisine made from owner Ahalil Barakat’s family recipes handed down through generations. Here you will find a wide variety of delicious middle eastern foods from rice dishes to salads, grape leaves, tabbouleh, Fattoush, baba ghanouj, chicken shawarma, shish kebab, sanbousa. Cultural desserts are also on their menu, sweet treats like baklava, maamoul, coconut and basbousa cake, as well as pickled beets and fresh fruit juices. Enjoy while strolling through the market or take home for family dinner. You won’t be disappointed!

We are also pleased to introduce Nizakat Noori, owner of Noori’s Kitchen, another unique vendor in our lineup of international flavors. Noori’s offers authentic Afghan cuisine, including traditional dishes of saffron rice, chicken kabobs, chicken and potato sambosa, chickpeas, and salad. Stop by and see what cookin … so you don’t have to!

Next time you shop at the market, please make sure to give these amazing business owners extra gratitude for all they provide.

In closing, we want to say thank you to all our Snellville Farmers market vendors, for your time and dedication to the Snellville community. And we especially thank you for choosing Snellville Farmers’ Market to be part of your story!

Competition gives $1,750 to student entrepreneurs

Gwinnett County student entrepreneurs braved the Shark Tank in May, collecting a total of $1,750 in donated funds to help grow their budding businesses.

The annual pitch competition, based on the popular TV show of the same name, encourages local students to create a self-sustaining business complete with business plans, financial forecasts and marketing strategies. They then pitch their businesses to a room full of judges comprised of local business leaders who grant them seed money based on the strength of their presentations.

Each of the judges donated their time and $250 to the competition which has been taking place in the city for more than a decade.

“The City of Snellville believes in creating a bond between our schools, our business community and the city itself to bolster student entrepreneur efforts which, in turn, fosters a healthy business environment for all residents,” said City Manager Matt Pepper. “The competition brings together the best of our young student entrepreneurs and our business community to create a thriving business environment.”

Student businesses ranged from cakes in a jar to crocheted stuffed animals.

Here’s a list of what was awarded:

Zuri Jackson - Styled By Z (Brookwood High School) - $425

Mina Torab – FoodCycle (Brookwood High School) - $325

Holly Nguyen - Cozy Crochet (Brookwood High School) - $300

Monty Robinson - Legends of the Minigame (Brookwood High School) - $300

Montgomery named assistant city manager

City officials are proud to announce the hiring of Mercy Montgomery to the position of Assistant City Manager.

Montgomery joins the City of Snellville after serving as Assistant City Manager for the City of Chamblee where she managed the directors of the Parks and Recreation, Planning and Development, and Economic Development departments as well as a range of policy development and special projects, including housing policy, downtown activation strategies, and collaborative community service provision.

“I’m thrilled to be joining the Snellville team at such an exciting time in our community’s history,” she said. “I look forward to supporting ongoing progress in downtown Snellville and seeing The Grove thriving with new businesses and community activity. The city is fortunate to have exemplary leadership and a highlyskilled staff and I’m looking forward to building strong working relationships and collaborating on innovative ideas as I serve our city.”

Montgomery received her Bachelor of Arts in Education with a focus on experiential learning from the University of Georgia. She also holds a Master of Public Administration degree as well as a certificate in Non-Profit Management from UGA. Following completion of the top-ranked MPA program, she completed a Local Government Management Fellowship in Hamilton, OH through the International City/County Management Association.

Returning home to Georgia provided Montgomery with the opportunity to work with students at her alma mater before joining the team at the Carl Vinson Institute of Government as a consultant on workforce development for communities and clients such as the State of Georgia’s Department of Economic Development.

She then served for three years as Director of Economic Development for the City of Sugar Hill, leading cultivation and support of business opportunities in the community and lease-up and opening of the community’s new E Center project. Montgomery and her team also managed and provided customized small business support, implementation of an interactive public communications strategy, and various community and economic development initiatives.

Montgomery proudly serves as a member of the Alumni Advisory Board for the Master of Public Administration program at The University of Georgia and is a 2020 graduate of Leadership Gwinnett.

“Mercy’s experience and passion for local government will be a great asset to the City of Snellville,” said City Manager Matthew Pepper. “Her work in Sugar Hill, and more recently Chamblee, along with her education in city management, has provided her with valuable lessons that will benefit city operations and residents alike. We look forward to Mercy’s contributions for years to come.”

Montgomery can be reached at mmontgomery@snellville.org.

Community Garden @Snellville

Garden creating community bonds

Are you curious about the ways gardening brings people together — how a garden transforms from a private act of cultivation to a public, social or collective practice of placemaking, stewardship and community care? Well let’s just say the Snellville Community Garden has got it going on!

Since 2010 our community garden has continued to make a significant impact on the local community and charities by not only providing a safe place for families to gather and grow their own food, but also by donating food and plants to various organizations. This year, gardeners and members of the Community Garden @ Snellville Greenhouse Team; Lucy Nettleton, Brian Hughes, Ellen Hughes, Kathy Keys, Maggie Van Buren, Karen Hanley, Kathy Pittman and Rob Stewart, led by Master Gardener Wes Nettleton, spent countless hours planting seeds and nurturing seedlings from February until April, producing more than 5,000 vegetable, herb and flower plants which resulted in a record breaking Annual Spring Plant Sale. Through their efforts, they were able to contribute a substantial number of plants to the Gwinnett County Master Gardeners Annual Plant Sale and its funded programs setting an all-time record for the organization, the Gwinnett County School garden program, the Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry Garden, as well as the

Gwinnett Community Church. Their contributions have helped to strengthen community bonds and promote a culture of care and generosity. To say the Community Garden @ Snellville and its Greenhouse Team demonstrate what it is to be true stewards would be an understatement.

Thanks to our community garden’s excellent reputation, we are proud to

report that all of our raised beds for this garden year which began April 1, 2024 through March 31, 2025 are completely full. Gardeners are busy planting and maintaining both their respective beds plus joining together on workdays to tend to the common areas and the garden has never looked better!

Solicitation Ordinance

Solicitation ordinance protects homeowners

You’re sitting down for dinner and suddenly the doorbell rings. You answer it and it’s a salesman, selling something you have no intention of buying. You politely decline, but he’s persistent.

It’s then that you remember the city has an Aggressive Solicitation Ordinance requiring those who go door-to-door to have a permit. A quick question of “Do you have a permit?” sends the salesman away.

Mayor and Council approved the measure requiring permits for solicitation after several complaints were made by residents reporting people asking shoppers for money in an aggressive manner in city shopping centers. Many of those asking for money travel from other cities and are not telling the truth when they tell citizens they need money for basic needs such as food or gas. The ordinance closely tracks Gwinnett County’s version of the law However, the ordinance also applies to door-to-door solicitation.

In the past 12 months, the Snellville Police Department has approved 20 permits for solicitation and issued six citations for violation of the solicitation ordinance.

Those who want to go door-to-door must go to the police station, 2315 Wisteria Drive, and register to do so during regular business hours. Once registered, the solicitor will be issued a badge identifying themselves. If the solicitor doesn’t have a badge, call the Snellville Police Department at 770-985-3555. A county solicitation permit is not acceptable in Snellville. You must have a City of Snellville permit to solicit. Each employee soliciting for a company must have their own permit.

Kindergarten students from W.C. Britt Elementary visited City Hall, the Snellville Police Department and the Elizabeth H. Williams Gwinnett County Public Library May 3 on a walking field trip. The students received a lesson about local government, learned about the job duties and tools of a police officer and got a look at the new library at The Grove at Towne Center. The City of Snellville believes in fostering a partnership between our young people and government and police.

South Gwinnett High School

On March 22, South Gwinnett High School has come alive with its rich culture this year, as teacher Solange Destang spearheaded the 3rd Annual International Festival. This exciting event echoes the vibration of the community’s rich tapestry of backgrounds. The community enjoyed a dazzling display of international music, dance, and cuisine. Our local residents are known for sharing their heritages through food stalls bursting with exotic flavors, as the stage came alive with traditional music and dance performances. This festival is a testament to South Gwinnett High School’s commitment to inclusivity and appreciation for diversity. It was the perfect opportunity to broaden one’s horizons, experience new cultures firsthand, and celebrate the vibrant community spirit.

South Gwinnett High School Marketing and Entrepreneurship students had a selling event at the local Market by Macy’s. They were able to sell their products and build a customer base at Macy’s. The exercise gave them real-world experience and helped the young entrepreneurs hone their skills.

Brookwood High School

Three Brookwood students awarded German Study-Abroad Scholarship

Brookwood High School’s German language program has added another feather to its cap for outstanding student performances. This year, Broncos Kyle Ssendagire, Alex Dudash and Otto PaulTafur received Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) scholarships to study in Germany tuition-free for a full school year. The admission rate for the German program is under 2%, ranking among the world’s most competitive scholarships for high school students. It is highly unusual for a school to have three students accepted into the program, much less in the same year. All three Brookwood students intend to enter the program August 2024.

”To have three of my students going is absolutely unheard of,” said Brookwood German teacher Mirela Kimbrough. “I cannot wait to see where this takes them and how much of the German culture and language they’ll absorb.”

Although these three students earned the privilege through their scores, discipline, and passion to gain fluency in German, they also have Kimbrough to thank. She urged them to apply and encouraged and guided them throughout the rigorous selection process.

In 2020, Brookwood was the first school in Gwinnett County and the third in Georgia to be named a Deutches Sprachdiplom (DSD) school for its three-year 100% pass rate of the German university system entrance exams, DSD1 and DSD2. Additionally, Kimbrough was one of three in the nation to receive a 2021 German Embassy Teacher of Excellence Award from the American Association of Teachers of German.
