The TPC Las Vegas Amateur was the SNGA’s first single day event in 2011 and made for an exciting finish in all divisions. The Nevada State Seniors saw a rain shortened event and some great golf from back to back champion Steven Hakes. The Nevada State Match Play pitted 31 of the states best vs. each other with Steven Fink taking the crown. The Pacific Coast Amateur is currently being held at Martis Camp in Truckee on the Nevada, California boarder. For more Pacific Coast Am information visit www.snga.org. Story continued on page 3

2011 Nevada State Seniors Cascata July 8-10, 2011

Rain shortened the Nevada State Seniors from a 54 hole event to 36 this year. Though the rain was intense and forced an early end to the event, some great golf was played at the gorgeous Cascata Golf Club in Boulder City, NV. Steven Hakes fires a 68 (-4) and 69 (-3) to win his second Championship in as many years. Hakes, ranked amongst the top Senior Amateurs in the country, was the only player to post a two day total under par for the event. Doug Pool, fresh off his qualification for the United States Senior Open, finished second with a two day total of 146 (+2) including a 2 under 70 on the second day. Gary Carpendale finished in 3rd at 149 (+5). Burke Cahill fires a 1 under 71 (-1) and a 1 over 73 (+1) to win the net portion of the event. Cahill, who has been consistent all year, was the only player under par in the Net portion. Jim Cail finished with a blistering Net 65 (-7) on day two to finish in second at 146 (+2). Randy Sears shot 150 (+6) to take home 3rd place. Congratulations to Jim Massey and Danny Ganier for comprising a pair of amazing shots over the weekend. Massey knocked his second shot in the hole on the 346 yard par 4 11th for eagle. Danny Ganier also holed out from the fairway on the 390 yard par 4 9th for eagle. The SNGA, NNGA, and Nevada State Golf Association would like to thank all the competitors for playing in this year’s event. Though the rain cut the event short, it was definitely not short of excitement. We would also like to thank the incredible service and setting provided by the Cascata Golf Club, it is truly a world class facility. Finally, a big thanks to all the volunteers that came out to brave the weather. Without your help we wouldn’t be able to run these fine events. 2011 Nevada State Match Play Championship Cascata July 15-17, 2011

The best amateur golfers in the state, some 31 contestants, ascended upon the prestigious Cascata Golf Club in Boulder City, Nevada to battle one another in a Match Play of great proportion. The winner would receive the recognition only few hold, Nevada State Match Play Champion, and the accompanying perpetual trophy for the year. The first day (rounds 1 and 2) pitted some young, up and coming talent the likes of JT Cochran, defending champion and #1 seed, Scott Smith, UNR alumni and PGA Hopeful, JT Mohlman, fresh off his Clark County Amateur conquest, and Match Play regulars Joe Sawaia, Steve Fink, Joe Sanders, and 4 time champion David Nelson. These players would have their hands full with some stiff competition as they attempted to make their way through the match play gauntlet. Longtime SNGA contestant Greg Hudson would prove to be the most surprising victory on day one. It is not often that we see a 30 seed defeating the number 3 seed Scott Smith 4 & 3 in the first round. This goes to show that Nevada has a slew of good amateur golfers that compete on any given day. Day two showed that the field had shrunk to just 8 and the matches would get more intense from this point forward. Joe Sawaia, Nevada’s Pacific Coast team member, would face arguably the best Nevada match play contestant of all times in David Nelson. The match would live up to the hype with Sawaia defeating Nelson 1 up to move into the final four. Newcomer and college player Bryce Greeley would see himself facing upstart and Player of the Year candidate JT Mohlman in the quarterfinals. The match would take extra holes but Greeley would birdie the 2nd playoff hole to move one step closer to the cup. Meanwhile two long ball hitters in Eric Fitzsimmons and Craig Erickson were battling for the third spot in the semifinals. They too would need extra holes to declare a winner. Erickson outlasted Fitzsimmons in 20 holes to move forward. The rubber match as its called was between Steven Fink and Joe Sanders, two former Pacific Coast Amateur and USGA State Team contestants. In the end, Finks fiery play would propel him past Sanders in a great match that took all 18 holes to determine the winner. Page 3

In the semifinal matches, Steve Fink would defeat Craig Erickson 2 & 1 to move into the final match. Joe Sawaia would defeat Bryce Greeley 4 & 3 to claim a final spot. By day three both the finalist had endured multiple rounds of golf in grueling 100+ degree heat. One day remain, a 36 hole match to determine the 2011 Nevada State Match Play Champion. In the early going Steve Fink got off to a quick start and by the end of the first 9 had given himself a 3 up margin. Sawaia would endure the final 9 of the first side and the two competitors would break for lunch with Fink leading 3 up with 18 to play. After lunch, Fink came out refreshed and it showed, burying countless birdie and par putts on top of a charge placed by Sawaia. At one point by the turn of the final 18, Sawaia found himself down 4 and knew he had to put pressure on Fink go give himself a chance. Coming down the stretch Sawaia cut the lead to 2, but found trouble on the 16th hole in the hazardous rocks to the left of the fairway. With a tee shot and second shot safely in the fairway, Fink could only watch as Sawaia attempted with all his creativity to get out of the rocks. He was unsuccessful and conceded the hole, giving Steve Fink the match and the championship 3 & 2. The SNGA in conjunction with the Northern Nevada Golf Association and the Nevada State Golf Association would like to congratulate Steve Fink on a job well done. We would also like to thank all the contestants that made this tournament such a success. Finally we would like to thank the staff of Cascata for allowing us to use the amazing facility to host one of golf greatest formats. 2011 TPC Las Vegas Amateur TPC Las Vegas July 23, 2011

The 2011 TPC Las Vegas Amateur was held on a glorious day at TPC Las Vegas and the famed par 71 layout. Steve Fink continues his winning ways shooting 72 (+1) and taking the Senior Scratch Division. Kevin Parrish shot 72 (+1) Net to win the Senior Net Division. In the Super Senior Division, Jim Allred, Multiple Major Champion in the 90’s, showed sparks of his former self, shooting 77 (+6) on the difficult layout to win the Super Senior Scratch Division title. Jim Cail continued his hot streak, shooting 68 (-3) net to win the Super Senior Net title. The Open (Net) division comprised of two flights for this competition. George Yocum continued to show his face atop the leaderboards, with a 73 (+2) to take the Overall Open Division title. David Duda, competing in his first SNGA event, would find himself in a playoff with Player of the Year candidate Dennis Moore. After the three hole playoff using 1/6th of the competitors handicaps, Dave Duda would find him self a winner in his first attempt. Defeating Dennis 12.5 to 13.5. Congratulations to the winner and all contestants that took part in our 1 day tournament at TPC Las Vegas. Thank you to all the volunteers and staff that helped make the event such a success. Finally thank you to TPC Las Vegas for letting us host our event at their great facility. Check the SNGA website for our next one day event, The DragonRidge Amateur on August 13th.

Misunderstood Rules Provided by SNGA

Q: Should I hit a Provisional Ball? The provisional ball is one of the greatest time savers in the game of golf. It allows you to play an “extra” ball when your original ball may be lost outside a water hazard or out of bounds. Imagine for a moment if this provision was not within the USGA’s Rules of Golf. A player would play his tee shot perhaps into a thick forest, and then would have to go forward to search for the ball for 5 minutes, not find it, and then head all the way back to the tee to play his third shot…cost him lots of extra time did it not? Let’s now take a look at the details of Rule 27-2, so the next time we have to invoke it on the golf course, we do so properly. The key first element to playing a provisional ball is where the original ball lies: it MUST BE either lost outside a water hazard or possibly out of bounds. If neither of those conditions apply, you cannot play a provisional ball. Key element #2: you must verbally declare, to your opponent in match play or your maker or fellow competitor in stroke play, that you intend to play a provisional ball. Key element #3: you or your partner (if you are playing a team format) must not go forward to look for the original ball before playing a provisional ball. If you breach elements 1,2, or 3 the original ball is lost under penalty of stroke and distance and the provisional becomes the ball in play. Multiple provisional balls may be played from the same spot, each new provisional will bear relationship to the previously struck provisional ball. Now what happens as we move forward on the hole after playing both our original ball and provisional ball? Key element #1: you cannot play a provisional ball from a spot where your original ball is likely to be or closer to the hole. If you do so, the original ball is lost and the provisional becomes the ball in play under penalty of stroke and distance. Key element #2: If it is known or virtually certain that your original ball is in a water hazard, you must proceed in accordance with Rule 26-1 (Water Hazard Rule.) Key element #3: If you have played multiple strokes with your provisional ball before reaching your original ball, and your original ball is found: you MUST abandon all strokes and penalty strokes incurred with the provisional ball. Key element #4: If your original ball is found outside a water hazard and in bounds, you must continue play with that original ball. If you continue to play your provisional ball, you are now playing a wrong ball. The provisional ball rule is in place to help you and all others on the course better enjoy the game. The time saving aspect of Rule 27-2 is its greatest asset, just be sure the next time you invoke the rule, you follow the steps above to avoid penalty.

Two Butch Harmon Pros Finish Runner Ups at British Open Championship Butch Harmon is a busy guy. Again this week, Harmon had multiple golfers he works with playing in a major championship. Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson finished in a tie for second place at the Open Championship at Royal St. George’s in England. Obviously, that is the second loser, as they say, but still a terrific accomplishment for both. Harmon operates the Butch Harmon School of Golf at Las Vegas' Rio Secco Golf Club.—By Brian Hurlburt. Mickelson started the final round playing very well. He drained a few long putts en route to recording a 30 on the front nine. But he missed a short par putt on 11 which started a downhill slide. And when eventual champ Darren Clarke didn't falter, Mickelson's chances were over. "It was really a fun start, and it was exciting; it was one of those times where you're not thinking birdie and things were just happening," Mickelson told the media after the round. "I'm not planning on making a 50-footer for eagle, but it just happens. I hit some of the best shots I've hit in the wind, not just today but really all week. I made some great putts today. And then later on when I ended up missing them, I still hit great putts that caught the lip or looked like they were going to go in. It was a fun day. When I saw Darren wasn't going to make a mistake and he played some great golf, when he didn't make any mistakes there throughout the round, I had to start trying to make birdies, and that's when I ended up making a couple bogeys." Mickelson missed several short putts during the Championship, leading Harmon to be quoted as saying the putter lost the championship for Mickelson. Harmon has always been surprised by Mickelson's lack of success at the Open Championship so it was long overdue for Mickelson to be in the thick of things at this major. "I always wondered why," Harmon told The New York Post writer Mark Cannizzaro, "because he's Seve Ballesteros. That's who he is. He's Ballesteros and Arnold Palmer wrapped up into one." Johnson played steady all week and looked to be mounting a charge on the back nine on Sunday, but he pumped one of out of bounds on 15, ending his chances. At one point, he was just two behind. He still could look to positives following the round. "I think I had a great week," Johnson told the media. "I came into the week -- obviously I came down with a little bit of illness, wasn't feeling that well, so I didn't know what to expect. But I fought all week, and I didn't have my best stuff this week for sure. But I hung in there and just fought around, and I think I did very well." Both Rio Secco Golf Club and the Butch Harmon School of Golf are open to all Las Vegas golfers so you can experience what Mickelson and Johnson do.
