Electrical Installation Team Leader, Wigan and Leigh College Also referred to as a fuse box, the consumer unit is the heart of the wiring system of any installation and plays a pivotal role in the property by controlling the electrical supply. The unit distributes the electricity, via protective devices, to the different circuits that make up the electrical wiring installation.

In some installations, old cable colours could still be present. The old neutral (black) has been replaced by blue. The old red (live) has been replaced by brown. The earth is still identified by green and yellow.
