Happy June, Northern Nevada! The summer season in our area offers continuous events and recreational activities to please our restless souls. It’s time for us to stretch out from hibernation – from the harsh winter and rainy spring – and take advantage of the warm, glowing sunshine. Let’s tube down the Truckee River, hike the Skyline Trail and stroll through our local farmers markets. Let’s get outside and explore our gorgeous Great Basin – we truly live in a wonderful community. In honor of Men’s Health Month and Father’s Day – Sunday, June 18 – we decided to encourage you – men – to take charge of your health this month. Unfortunately – men – we women take care of ourselves better than you do. According to a 2015 study by the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, more than 70 percent of men are either overweight or obese (versus 58 percent of us women), which can increase your risk of heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, breathing problems and so much more. But, you can change that. Encourage your fathers, sons and friends to make health a priority. Get adequate sleep, toss out the tobacco, exercise often, eat healthy, manage your stress and visit your doctor regularly. You – men – deserve to reap the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. In this issue, we provide you with information to help you understand your physiology, and we provide you with ways to identify health concerns and tackle them naturally. We highlight the importance of good oral hygiene, we provide you with a need-to-know testosterone guide, we offer natural remedies for combating erectile dysfunction (ED) and we provide some weight loss tips to help you lose those pesky pounds. We also share a lip-smacking BBQ pork spare ribs recipe (it’s important to splurge in moderation, especially on Father’s Day!), we provide information about recharging your summer garden and we feature a guide of local farmers markets – buy and eat local, Nevada! Please connect with us if you have questions, comments or ideas. Follow us and engage with our social platforms and content. And, of course, we wish you a warm and vibrant June. Cheers, Gabrielle Irvin

FIBROMYALGIA: PUTTING TOGETHER THE PIECES PART 1 By Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T., C.F.M.P., and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B. Let’s start with the brain and its relationship to the pain of fibromyalgia. All fibromyalgia patients suffer with central sensitization. We have probably all experienced the tender-to-touch spots in our muscles called “trigger points.” The problem in fibromyalgia is that this small trigger point can expand to include the entire body. So, it’s muscle right? Wrong. We have systems in our brain and tracks in our spinal cord that shut off pain. We all have pain signals that come into our body through numerous pain sensors in our hands, legs, skin, muscles, etc. One of our brain’s many functions is to shut off these pain signals by secreting chemicals such as morphine. If we didn’t have these pain controlling mechanisms we wouldn’t be able to put our clothing on due to the severe sensitivity that we would experience from them touching the pain sensory nerve endings in our skin and throughout our entire body. In fibromyalgia, the balance in these mechanisms becomes tipped with excess pain symptoms being sent to the brain, and these pain signals begin to overwhelm the brain’s ability to shut off the pain. Then, to add insult to injury, the brain learns these pain signals. And that is called central sensitization. Thus, the brain and spinal cord are becoming sensitized with these pain signals. So, fibromyalgia is a neurological condition, not a rheumatological condition. And it’s definitely not a muscle problem.

Getty Images

The evolution of the condition of fibromyalgia started back in the 1990s when the American College of Rheumatology came up with the series of guidelines as to how to diagnose “fibromyalgia” due to a growing population of patients who had pain throughout their entire body and didn’t have rheumatoid arthritis, lupus or multiple sclerosis. At that time, doctors couldn’t explain why patients having that symptomological profile would be experiencing pain when testing to all “known” factors was negative. So, they developed the “diagnostic test” of pushing on you and 18 specific points on your body and, if you were tender in 11 of those, they would diagnose you with “pain in your muscle fibers” – which is the meaning of the term fibromyalgia. In 2010, the American College of Rheumatology said, “well maybe our 1990 criteria for fibromyalgia wasn’t so good.” So they revised them and, in essence, said fibromyalgia is someone who had pain throughout their entire body, are unrested, fatigued, have “Fibro fog” and “there is no other explanation of the pain.” Unfortunately, this remains the state of diagnosis of fibromyalgia in 2017 in the medical model. In actuality, since 1990 we’ve learned a lot about fibromyalgia and its causes – through medical research and clinical trials and experience. The five pillars of fibromyalgia are: 1. Brain (central sensitization) 2. Childhood trauma and chronic stress hormones 3. Thyroid (Hashimoto’s) 4. Intestinal dysfunction 5. Peripheral neuropathy of the small fiber type

8

More on the brain: Regularly, we observe that most, if not all, fibromyalgia patients have experienced childhood or adult emotional trauma and are in some degree of post traumatic stress syndrome. We humans have a brain-based stress response to help us get out of bad situations. If you encounter a bear walking in the Tahoe woods, the stress response will help you to fight the bear or more likely flee by running as fast as you can. The stress hormones that are flooding your body during this survival response spread throughout your body and cause muscles to contract harder, cause the liver to release glucose for energy, and cause blood flow to reduce in your G.I. tract and go to the muscles so you have as much oxygen in them as possible. This is an okay response to have for 10 or 15 minutes, but not for a lifetime. Well, most emotional trauma from sexual, verbal, physical abuse or general massive life stress (traumatic divorce, witnessing a shooting, etc.) are usually the original triggers of the above mentioned fight-or-flight responses when the stress response is chronic. Now if you’ve already developed central sensitization as described above, that patient is going to further over-experience pain even more as the stress hormones are flooding the person’s entire system and the hormone adrenaline further sensitizes the already sensitive nerve endings throughout the entire body, causing the pain nerves to send more pain signals to the brain creating a vicious cycle and then further overwhelming the entire pain filtering system. The adrenaline fight-or-flight response is like pouring lighter fluid on the fire in the fibromyalgia patient. And to be clear on this point, it’s not that the fibromyalgia patient is stressed or can’t handle stress or needs to “pull up their bootstraps,” it’s that they have a neurological stress response in their brain that never shuts off and helps to create the vicious cycle of pain that the fibromyalgia patient experiences. Thus, brain responses are at the core of the cause of the pain in the standard fibromyalgia patient. Fibromyalgia is, as stated, a condition with five major components – the above central sensitization and flight syndrome, Hashimoto’s thyroid condition, intestinal dysfunction and peripheral neuropathy of the small fiber type. It is a multifactorial condition that requires its own unique therapeutic paradigm to dampen, reverse and manage – preferably without medication. In part two next month, we will cover the latter three legs of the condition and address some aspects of a successful approach for recovery and maintenance of this seemingly baffling condition. HEALTHY EYES, HEALTHY BODY:

SIMPLE TIPS FOR OPTIMUM EYE HEALTH By Healthy Beginnings Staff Do you often think of holistic health – body and mind – when you hear the words “eye care?” Whether you associate eye health with holistic heath, your eyes are a crucial part of wellness. Dr. Farnaz Khankhanian (“Dr. K”), optometrist and owner of Eagle Vision in Carson City, provides insight into the importance of eye health and its impact on the overall health of the body.

UNSATISFIED?

MAKE AN ADJUSTMENT. FIND OUT WHY WE ARE DIFFERENT. THEJOINT.COM/RENO

“[The eyes] are not just a window to your soul – they’re a window to your body,” Dr. Khankhanian said. In order to ensure not only optimum eye health – but also holistic health of the body – Dr. Khankhanian recommends comprehensive annual eye exams, starting at the age of 3. Along with eye-related conditions, eye doctors are able to detect other health issues during a comprehensive eye exam. Dr. Khankhanian often works with ophthalmologists, primary care physicians and internal medicine doctors, providing referrals to these specialists because of the potential health risks discovered during a patient’s eye exam, which can include: • • • • • •

Diabetes: Diabetes affects the small capillaries in the retina of the eyes. These blood vessels may leak blood or a yellowish fluid. Hypertension: Blood vessels in the eye may exhibit bends or tears, a possible indication of high blood pressure. High cholesterol: The cornea may have a yellowish appearance or ring around it, or there may be plaque in the blood vessels of the retina. Thyroid disease: Bulging eyes or protruding eyeballs may indicate thyroid disease. Cancer: Ocular melanoma can develop in the cells that make pigmentation in the eye. Tumors: Droopy eyelids or oddly-shaped pupils could indicate a neck tumor or an aneurism.

Interestingly, a comprehensive eye exam can also help determine if a patient has ankylosing spondylitis (AS), which is a form of arthritis that affects the spine. AS is most prevalent in men, but women aren’t immune to the disease. Women are more prone to dry eye. People with dry eye experience irritated, scratchy or burning eyes, and allergy season and the arid Nevada desert certainly do not help this condition. Before heading to the pharmacy to self-treat an eye irritation, make an appointment with an optometrist. Over-the-counter eye drops contain preservatives and chemicals that may not be beneficial for your eyes long term. “Before you self-treat, let someone look at you,” Dr. Khankhanian said. In order to take care of your eyes – and your body – Dr. Khankhanian recommends that you: • • • • •

Eat right. It’s not all about carrots. Eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, particularly dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale or collard greens. Eating fish high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, tuna and halibut, is also beneficial for eye health. Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight increases your risk of developing diabetes and other conditions, which can lead to vision loss, such as diabetic eye disease or glaucoma. Don’t smoke. Smoking is linked to an increased risk of developing macular degeneration, cataracts and optic nerve damage, which can lead to blindness. Wear your shades. Sunglasses protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Wear sunglasses that block out 99-100 percent of both UVA and UVB radiation. Give your eyes a rest. Are you at the computer all day? Try the 20-20-20 rule to reduce eye strain: Every 20 minutes, look away about 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds.

When was the last time you had an eye exam? If it’s been a few years since you had your eyes dilated, don’t fret. An eye exam is a relatively simple procedure, and your eye doctor will examine your medical history, visual acuity, pupils, side vision, eye movement, prescription for corrective lenses, eye pressure, front portion of the eye, retina and optic nerve. For more information about eye health, call Dr. Khankhanian at Eagle Vision at 775-267-2012 or visit www.CarsonEagleVision.com.

It’s everywhere you look and on every sentient human’s mind over the age of 40. No discussion of maturing men’s well being is complete without acknowledging the role Big T (testosterone) plays in health and illness.

YOUR TESTOSTERONE NEED-TO-KNOW GUIDE

On average, a man’s peak “athletic” year is age 27. Testosterone, the main male sex hormone, produced in the testicles and adrenal gland, after age 35, declines by 1-2 percent per year, resulting in hypogonadism. An estimated 20 percent of men over the age of 50 have abnormally low testosterone levels.

Signs and symptoms of low testosterone include: Getty Images 1. Fatigue and loss of drive and competitive edge. 2. Low libido and an inability to maintain an erection. ESSENTIAL OILS:

THEY AREN’T JUST FOR WOMEN FROM MENTAL CLARITY TO MUSCLE ACHES, ESSENTIAL OILS HELP HEAL AND BALANCE By Elaine Brooks In today’s stressful times, we often forget to take care of ourselves, and sometimes our loved ones. Right, guys? We get wrapped up in running here and there and we forget to take the time to “smell the roses,” or any other great aroma that can bring about relaxation and repair – or even uplift – our mood. So, here are some great tips to help each other achieve balance in our lives. Mental Clarity Let’s start with mental clarity, since clarity helps all the other issues we face each day. Some great oils to use include: grapefruit, lemon, lime, peppermint, rosemary, clove and spearmint. Combining some of these together with a carrier oil – such as almond or jojoba – and rubbing the oils in at the base of the skull will help to activate the brain. A great uplifting blend includes: pink grapefruit, orange peel, lemon, spearmint, peppermint, cinnamon, bergamot and ginger. Some others that will work well for this are jasmine, lavender, lemongrass, patchouli, pine and ylang-ylang. Physical Endurance Getty Images

Then, to get your physical endurance up and running, using grapefruit, peppermint, pine, rose, spearmint or thyme works wonders. Mixing these with your carrier oil and applying to the large muscles will help with blood flow and will provide a better workout. This combination can be used before an event to increase physical strength and endurance. Muscle Soreness Ah, but you over did it, and now have some sore muscles. For sore muscles, combine ylang-ylang, rosemary and eucalyptus mixed with your carrier oil, and rub this combination into those sore muscles. But, what if you got a sprain? Use ylang-ylang, lemongrass and pine or cypress. Tei Fu, an essential oil that is more like a medicine chest in a bottle, helps with numerous issues from sprains to strains to toothaches to headaches. Tei Fu contains eucalyptus, camphor, wintergreen, lavender, menthol and clove with safflower oil. Relaxation You made it through the day, and now it’s time to relax and have time with that special one. If communication has been a little lacking of late, open up those channels and encourage the flow of feelings that have been repressed. Frankincense, pine and ylang-ylang are a good combination, as are lemon, sandalwood and clary sage. You once again combine these with your carrier oil and rub this formula into the upper chest, back of the neck and shoulders… A great relaxing massage in this area can open up more than communication. So as your thoughts turn to romance, focus on each other and enjoy the evening with a massage using rose, patchouli, clary sage and ylang-ylang. You can also add some cedarwood and ginger to spice things up a bit. Massage the formula with your carrier oil into the back, neck and shoulders of your partner until the oil is fully absorbed in the skin. This treatment should be mutually reciprocated for best results. For more information, call The Herb Lady at 775-356-1499 or visit www.Herb-Lady.com.

ASK THE EXPERTS: LOW BACK PAIN SYMPTOMS, CAUSES, DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT By Sierra Regional Spine Institute Who is affected by low back pain? Eight out of 10 individuals will suffer with low back pain (LBP) at least once in their life, but the ailment is particularly relevant for people ages 40-80. LBP is the leading cause of job-related disability, and is the biggest contributor to missed workdays. What causes low back pain? LBP is a very ambiguous condition that is typically caused by more than one variable. The spine and its associated muscles create the “core” of our body, giving us the strength and flexibility to do all of our daily activities and hobbies. Any kind of imbalance related to the spine itself or surrounding tissues (muscle, ligaments, tendons, discs) can lead to pain. Factors that can cause or exacerbate LBP include increased stress levels, diet, repetitive movements, poor posture, sedentary lifestyle, poor lifting habits, genetics, high impact work/hobbies and age. With these factors in mind, the most common physiological/underlying causes of LBP include disc injury, narrowing of the spinal canal, compression of neural tissue, fracture, arthritis and facet joint irritation.

Neck or back problems? Our team is ready to serve you and keep you active and healthy Nevada’s Leaders in Minimally Invasive Spine Treatment and Surgery: James Rapport, MD Phelps Kip, MD James Olson, MD Andrew Geisler, MD Christopher Twombly, MD John Reyher, DO

How can low back pain affect me? Acute LBP can cause temporary stress in a person’s life, but can typically resolve on its own in 2-4 weeks. If symptoms do not improve by then, seeking medical attention to address any underlying issues is important. A physician and/or physical therapist can help you determine what is causing the pain with the goal of getting you back to your normal life activities. LBP can have major psychological consequences, especially as the problem becomes chronic in nature. Sleep typically starts becoming disturbed. People begin to avoid certain situations or activities due to fear of pain: affecting their hobbies, everyday activities and social life. People may begin avoiding physical activity altogether. The body’s physiological response to LBP changes as time goes on and the body tries to adjust and cope. As pain becomes a long-term, chronic issue it wears not only on physical but mental well being as well. Thus, it’s not surprising that any type of chronic pain is a common cause of depression. Avoiding physical activity is very detrimental to recovery from LBP, and should only be done acutely when pain levels are typically high. What can I do to prevent low back pain? Balanced and healthy lifestyle choices have a large impact on how we will deal with pain and injury. Factors found to increase risk for LBP are a history of smoking, repetitive lifting/bending with daily activities or work, age and any unhealthy lifestyle choices related to nutrition and exercise. Exercise is an important component of life, keeping us fit and balanced. Exercise regulates our body’s metabolism and releases endorphins that keep us “happy.” Leading a healthy lifestyle is associated with fewer injuries and quicker recovery. Whether an injury has occurred or not, the most crucial component for a happy spine is always a strong core. Without good spine habits and body awareness, an injury can happen from an activity as simple and bending over to tie a shoe to more stressful heavy lifting. Without a strong core, our bodies don’t work efficiently and cause unnecessary stress on the spine. What are my treatment options? Typically, the first step in getting the correct treatment is seeing your doctor. They can provide a variety of options that are available, including: injections, imaging such as X-ray or MRI, chiropractic care, acupuncture, physical therapy, etc. Building clinical research indicates that it is most beneficial to remain active after an injury. Staying active can bring benefits of increased flexibility and blood flow in an area that is trying to heal. This is where a physical therapist can be very helpful. Physical therapists are specialized in movement analysis, and can do a full evaluation to help determine what mechanisms are contributing and how to adjust habits accordingly. More often than not, LBP can be alleviated with simple education in body awareness. A surprising number of people are not aware of slight differences in their movement patterns that are causing their pain. This is where making simple habitual changes can make a BIG difference in daily function. As physical therapy treatment begins, the key is a balance of strength and flexibility in a safe and pain-free range. No matter what form of treatment is used to treat LBP, if the underlying poor movement patterns aren’t addressed, there is a much higher change that re-injury will occur. What types of outcomes can I expect? Outcomes depend on many variables related to the underlying spine injury, motivation level and prior strength, flexibility and health status. With the help of the right professionals, this pain can potentially be treated quicker, and get you back to your normal daily activities.

NEW TOOL IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER When the body is young and healthy it is able to take care of the balance between cellular damage and repair and rejuvenation. One of the more recent discoveries of how the body takes care of repairing damage is to signal the production of antioxidant enzymes or survival genes through something known as the Nrf2 (nuclear recombinant factor) pathway.

By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.

Nrf2 is a powerful protein that is latent within each cell in the body, unable to move or operate until it is released by an Nrf2 activator. Once released, it migrates into the cell nucleus and bonds to the DNA at the location of the Getty Images ARE (antioxidant response element), which is the master regulator of the total antioxidant system that is available in all human cells. This balancing act can become disrupted as one ages, or if the body is overcome by malfunction and disease resulting in further damage. This damage is known as oxidative stress and is accompanied by free radical production. Free radicals are free oxygen molecules that are very damaging to tissues when they interact with them. This damage contributes to the progression of hundreds of diseases and aging symptoms. Direct antioxidants such as vitamin C & E, berries and juices have typically been used to neutralize free radicals and to prevent the damage they cause. One molecule of antioxidants from these sources neutralizes one free radical at a 1:1 ratio. However, there comes a tipping point where the direct antioxidants are inadequate to take care of the damage. A better approach to fighting free radicals is to use the body’s own self defense mechanism. When Nrf2 is activated, it turns on the production of multiple internal

enzymes that are powerful enough to neutralize up to one million free radicals per second, every second. This has proven to be a far more effective approach in combating aging and disease. More than 1,000 scientific publications describe the relationship between Nrf2 activation and benefits in addressing various types of cancer. These studies span the entire range of scientific study design, from clinical supplementation trials in humans, to mechanic studies in specific cell cultures, to gene activation studies.

Nrf2 is perhaps the most important cell defense and survival pathway – protecting cells and tissues from a variety of toxicants and carcinogens. One particularly effective activator is a patented combination of five herbs (ashwagandha, bacopa, green tea, milk thistle and turmeric). It has been studied in dozens of peer-reviewed studies at universities and published in some of today’s most prestigious scientific journals. They have shown how this specific blend helps activate Nrf2, resulting in an average reduction in cellular stress of as much as 40 percent within 30 days. Watch for further information in future articles on the benefits of this activator against specific kinds of cancer. THE ROLFING SOLUTION TO MUSCULAR ADHESIONS FINDING THE SOURCE OF STIFFNESS, ROM RESTRICTION AND CHRONIC PAIN By Joe Dunkley

Inflexibility, chronically sore neck, back or shoulders, range of motion restrictions and loss of strength and nerve impingements all have a common cause: adhesions in the connective tissue. Rolfing is the deepest of all bodywork therapies and is unique in that it is one of the few therapies that focuses its treatment on the underlying fascia layers. Developed by biochemist Dr. Ida P. Rolf in the 1940s, Rolfing has grown over the decades to become respected as perhaps the most effective therapy for solving chronic problems and pain. As a Rolfer for 17 years, what I have witnessed regarding the power of Rolfing is extraordinary. In my practice alone I have seen Rolfing consistently eliminate the need for back surgery, carpal tunnel and thoracic outlet syndrome surgery in hundreds of cases. I have seen dramatic improvements in clients’ pain levels, flexibility and postural balance. Rolfing dramatically improves performance in athletes, advances yoga practices by years and reduces or eliminates the need for pain medications. The unfortunate fact is, however, that I am usually the very last person someone comes to see for his or her treatment. Someone with an injury or back pain, for example, is likely to first go see their medical doctor who likely recommends antiinflammatories and possibly physical therapy. Physical therapy increasingly over the years has resorted to gizmos, electrical stim, ultrasound and repetitive exercises, for its therapy and does very little hands-on work anymore. When patients get little relief, they are often blamed for not following their tedious exercises. Next they try massage therapy, while massage is a very effective therapy for muscular pain, massage therapists are not specifically trained in working with the fascia, which is usually where the real underlying problem lies. Next, a patient who hasn’t improved will often move on to acupuncture. Again, another very effective therapy, but its specialty is the energies of the body, not the fascia. Only then, after likely spending hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars, does someone decide to try Rolfing.

I like to say that when you have a plumbing problem you don’t call a carpenter. When you have myofascial problems in the body you need a myofascial specialist, and that is a Rolfer. Decades-old pain, stiffness and range of motion restrictions can be eliminated by the deep intensive therapy of Rolfing. Immediate relief can be experienced from the first session, and even an old injury can be permanently healed in a small handful of treatments. Rolfing is intense, but it is not overtly painful, it feels more like the “hurts so good” feeling when a treatment is focused on the right spot. Over time, Ida Rolf developed a series of sessions, known as the 10 series, for a complete body overhaul and realignment. This 10 series is what Rolfing is most famous for, as the holistic basis leaves people feeling decades younger. It is a process everyone should go through every 5-10 years in life to remove all the twists, strains and misalignments that form over time and to keep feeling limber, young and pain free. Joe Dunkley has been a practicing Rolfer for 17 years, working with top athletes in the golf world, working with iron men, runners and bikers, as well as working with sports medicine doctors, business leaders of Fortune 100 companies and the state of Colorado. Mold mycotoxins are fat-soluble toxins that never leave the body on their own. They circulate in the body then are removed by the liver, flow down the bile ducts into the bowel and are reabsorbed in the blood stream and keep recirculating. Symptoms of toxicity include psychiatric symptoms (LSD is rye mold), arthritis, fatigue, rapid heart rate, dizziness, headaches, anxiety, high blood pressure, brain fog, cirrhosis and many others. After the heavy rains in northern Nevada and California this winter, many basements and crawl spaces were flooded. Mold loves wet areas. Even water damage around bathrooms and leaky roofs can cause mold accumulation. Ductwork in our homes is another habitat for mold. Mold is one of the great masqueraders that plague the chronically fatigued patients. To complicate matters, some people have a genetic weakness that impairs their ability to fight mold toxins. Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker, M.D., has led the charge against mold and bacterial neurotoxins. His book, “Desperation Medicine,” chronicles his patients’ fights against neurotoxins, which stemmed from a bacterial overgrowth in Chesapeake Bay in the 1990s. This caused a host of neurological symptoms in children that played in the water or people who ate the fish from the Bay Area. He developed a test called the visual contrast test. This test measures the brain’s ability to detect color changes on arrays of bars of different degrees of darkness. This test is available online and can test one’s neurotoxicity levels via vision testing. The treatment that he espouses involves 11 steps. We employ the first step, which involves cholestyramine, a drug traditionally used to reduce cholesterol levels. It is a binding agent

Healthy Beginnings | June 2017

that reduces mold neurotoxins by binding them in the intestines. Some mold patients have been significantly impaired and require a more in-depth intervention. Mold detox can cause die off reactions such as brain fog, aches and pains, and mood changes. Drainage remedies, such as Burbur and glutathione, can diminish these reactions.

Another 40-year-old patient was having very paranoid symptoms and waving a gun around threatening passersby on his front porch. He mentioned that his air conditioner had lots of mold. After treating with cholestyramine and living in another house, he was much improved and went back to work with no more paranoid symptoms.

Our friend and teacher Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt, M.D., Ph.D., finds that chlorella, a fresh water vegetable, can also bind neurotoxins from the mold. Another friend, Dr. Bradford Weeks, M.D., feels that propolis from the beehive, which protects the hive from mold, fungus and bacterial assault, is also a good binder for mold toxins in the intestines. I love the definition for propolis which is, “for the city,” i.e. the beehive.

Homeopathic mold drops, which are 30x and 60x dilutions of the top 20 molds, are very helpful. This is anti-mold treatment. When we see patients with difficult-to-understand symptoms, testing for basic molds such as Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans, Mucor racemosus, Penicillium notatum and Stachybotrys atra turn up frequently. Remediation of the toxic home or work environments, removing patients from toxic mold sources and binding mold toxins in the bowel can be life changing.

We had a young person who grew up in a moldy farmhouse that caused him to experience hallucinations. He was treated with psychiatric drugs for years. He had numerous encounters with law enforcement and difficulties integrating into society. After mold therapy, his life improved dramatically.

VARICOSE VEINS: UNSIGHTLY, BUT MORE THAN JUST COSMETIC? By Wynter N. Phoenix, M.D.

Signs and Symptoms of Possible CVI CVI occurs when damage to the valves in the veins of the leg disrupt the normal flow of blood from the legs up to the heart. When the valves in the veins do not work properly, there is an increase in pressure of the blood in the leg. This can enlarge varicose veins and increase the chances of developing more severe symptoms. You may want to consult a doctor if you experience the following: •

Pain in the leg or calf after long periods of sitting or standing

Discolored skin around the veins on the legs or ankles

Skin ulcers that are slow-healing

Severe swelling in the legs and ankles

Thickening and hardening of skin on legs and ankles

Hope with the Venefit® Procedure

Varicose veins are a common problem. More than 25 million people have varicose veins, according to the Vascular Disease Foundation. Many consider this condition cosmetic, but varicose veins can be a symptom of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). Left untreated, venous disease can become worse. Patients who have varicose veins that are a result of CVI can have complications.

Venefit® is a minimally invasive segmental radiofrequency ablation (RFA) treatment. Simply put, it closes off non-functioning veins to promote blood flow through the healthy, well-functioning veins.

Ablation is a procedure in which a physician applies heat to the affected area, creating scar tissue. This keeps the vein that is not working properly closed so that a healthy vein can take over the blood flow. Venefit® uses RF energy to create the heat, which is applied through the ClosureFast catheter.

THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH: REAL, OR JUST A MIRAGE? By Dr. Tony C. Jensen Across the industrialized world, women still live 5-to-10 years longer than men. Among people over 100 years old, 85 percent are women, according to Thomas Perls, founder of the New England Centenarian Study at Boston University School of Medicine and creator of the website www.Livingto100.com. Men, we should be asking ourselves: Why? Overall, about 70 percent of the variation around average life expectancy – just over 80 for women and just over 75 for men in the United States – is probably attributable to environmental factors, such as your behaviors and your exposures. Probably only 30 percent is due to genetics and, that is very, very good news. There’s so much we can do. Most of us should be able to get into our late 80s. What’s more, to get to older ages, like the centenarians, you are necessarily compressing the time you’re sick to the end of your life. It’s not a case where the older you get, the sicker you get. It’s very much the case that the older you get, the healthier you’ve been. There are some things that men do worse, or more of, compared to women, which sets us up for this scenario.

Getty Images

1.

We smoke more compared to women.

2.

Our testosterone levels are much higher than women (which makes us “MEN”), putting us at risk biologically and behaviorally. Testosterone increases blood levels of bad cholesterol and decreases levels of good cholesterol, putting us at greater risk of hypertension, heart disease and stroke, which starts about 10 years earlier than women. Behavior wise, testosterone makes us more aggressive in nature, and we are greater risk takers because we don’t estimate risk as well as women.

3.

We eat more food than women (usually), which leads to higher cholesterol and causes cardiovascular disease.

4.

Men don’t have two X chromosomes, they have an X and one Y chromosome, which may play in how we age. Women have a spare copy of their X chromosome giving them a backup if one is faulty. If one of ours fails, our cells begin to malfunction, which sets us up for greater risk of disease.

5.

Men don’t deal with their stresses as well as women, in general. We tend to internalize our emotions and stress rather than talking and letting them go.

6.

We don’t take very good care of ourselves in general, and we wait until we’re dying or we wait if something is really bad before we get any help for our condition. This is in part to how we are raised. When little boys fall down, we tell them that they’re okay, and to be tough. If a little girl falls down we act concerned and coddle her, in most cases. Drug companies understand this culture, and that’s why most drug commercials are geared to women. Women make most of the health and wellness decisions in the household, both for the children and men.

Studies have shown that, in general, women are more health conscious, and they have higher awareness of their physical and mental symptoms. These all result in healthier lifestyles and better health care use. Women also communicate better about their problems, which helps the process of diagnosis. Masculinity is a socially learned construct, and it can have unhealthy effects. Many men define unhealthy and risky behaviors as masculine, while they see health care use and health-promoting behaviors as feminine.

Masculinity is a socially learned construct, and it can have unhealthy effects.” If we compared ourselves to our favorite car or truck, we would take better care of ourselves. Most men drive their bodies hard, put bad fuel in them and do little-tono maintenance care for themselves, and wonder why, later in life, they are breaking down so much and dying sooner. The fountain is all around us, and we have to decide if we’re going to drink from it (eating good food, getting our nervous system in balance through chiropractic care and maintenance care, exercising in moderation, being more emotionally balanced, etc.). So enjoy the healthy waters around you, and let’s give the women a run for their money on living longer. For more information, call Jensen Chiropractic at 775-323-1222 or visit www. DADS AND DOULAS

DOULAS DON’T JUST BENEFIT MOMS – THEY BENEFIT DADS, TOO By Sarah Geo Walton, Owner of Bright Heart Birth Services For World Doula Week 2017, this year’s hashtag was #doulasbenefiteveryone to help raise awareness and acceptance, and to normalize that dads need a doula, too. One of my clients recently said, “In the last few decades, fathers went from being in the bar with their cigar to being in the birth room, and being expected to know exactly how and what to do to support their wives. My family and friends had so little advice to give when it came to what I could actually do to help.” So let’s ask the question, is it fair that we as a society are expecting this out of our partners? Really, it is okay to not know what to do. It is probably not ideal to rely on the person in labor for guidance, though. “She will tell me what she needs” is a common phrase I hear partners say. The truth is, when labor gets going, at some point she probably will not be able to tell you what to do. She needs to focus on labor. She needs to be in the zone, and expecting her to come out of it to explain what to do is, honestly, not fair to her. The presence it takes to labor is very much a mind-and-body connection, disrupting that can increase pain or panic sensations.

Many partners do not quite understand that a doula can be helpful for everyone in the birth process, not just the mother. Many couples do not end up hiring doulas because the partner is worried about being replaced, is unaware of how long and possibly difficult the process can be or doesn’t see the value in hiring someone to help navigate the twists and turns in the birth journey. Doulas and dads work as a team so that you – dad – can be the best support possible. We know birth, but you know (and love) your partner. You won’t have to think about what else is going on or what needs to get done. You only have to focus on being present with your partner while her body works to bring your baby into your arms. A doula will not replace you, they allow you to be involved, right there with her, every step of the way. A lot of what doulas do comes down to both experience and intuition: • I have taken turns massaging mom’s back for so long she had bruises. • I have teamed up with dads on applying acupressure points (evidence shows that applying acupressure reduces the perception of pain and can shorten labor). • I’ve been able to support moms while dads take a quick nap after being awake for 48 hours. • I’ve gone on food runs so dads wouldn’t have to leave their partner’s side. • I have answered dads’ worried texts at 3 a.m. in pregnancy and postpartum phases. • I’ve jumped in the back seat of the car with moms when it seemed possible that we wouldn’t make it to the hospital in time. • I have held dads’ hands and wiped away tears and assured them they that did everything they could to support their partner through their journey. • I’ve prompted dads with the questions to ask, and reminders to advocate. • I have sat in recovery with moms after surgery so dads could text me photos of babies, so that mom could see them while they were unable to be together. • I have run back and forth to the waiting room, assuring family that everything was going great. • I have taken photos of dads catching, dads announcing girl or boy, dads cutting cords, dads skin to skin and dads playing ukuleles to their newborn babies.

I do not want to minimize the important role you play as partner/husband/father, because let’s be real, you are her safe place, best friend and biggest fan, and she absolutely needs you there. I also do not want to pretend that birth isn’t often a long and unpredictable road. Would you rather spend this precious time fidgeting and floundering around, possibly feeling helpless? Or, would you rather have someone there to guide you, suggest things that you can do to help and remind you of what is normal? I honestly feel that you both deserve professional support so that you – dad – can continue to be present, and be a rock solid shoulder for her to lean and love on. Doulas don’t just benefit mom. TREAT DAD TO SOME RIBS THIS FATHER’S DAY AND MAKE THEM HEALTHY, TOO! By Marsha Gilford, Smith’s Food & Drug The weather is starting to warm up and June is upon us, which can mean one thing: Father’s Day! Surprise the great guy(s) in your life with a lipsmacking meal, easy for the whole family to make. What makes this recipe so amazing is the use of a slow cooker, and you can even use a BBQ grill, too! Since the rub and sauce are homemade (recipe and ingredients below) you can customize these ribs to fit you and your lifestyle. Whether you’re limiting the amount of salt or adding in some other spices – you can make these ribs all your own. Ingredients (use organic when possible):

Getty Images

RENEW Your LIFE Become Better Than You Expect.

5 1/2 pounds of pork spare ribs (1 large rack)

1 tablespoon ground cumin

2 tablespoons smoked paprika

1 tablespoon chili powder

2 tablespoons brown sugar, plus 3 tablespoons, divided

1 tablespoon salt, plus 1/2 teaspoon, divided

1 cup organic ketchup

1 tablespoon cider vinegar

1 tablespoon yellow mustard

2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

1/2 teaspoon hot pepper sauce, to taste

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

John Lawson offers personal and professional business coaching to help you facilitate GOALS, DREAMS and LIFE TRANSFORMATION. He provides coaching programs based on The Three Principles:

Directions:

MIND ~ CONSCIOUSNESS ~ THOUGHT

Next, cut the rack into halves or thirds and then place the meat into a slow cooker and cook on the lowest setting for 6-8 hours. About 15 minutes before the crock pot timer goes off, you will make your own sauce for the ribs. Mix together the ketchup, cider vinegar, mustard, 3 tablespoons of brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, hot pepper sauce, and 1/2 teaspoon each of salt and pepper in a saucepan for this homemade BBQ sauce. Bring these ingredients to a boil over medium heat, and then reduce to a simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. This sauce will be a bit healthier than store-bought, as you can control the sodium levels yourself, making it as delicious and healthy as you want.

First, combine the cumin, paprika, chili powder, brown sugar and 1 tablespoon of salt in a small bowl. Let those spices mingle together to create an amazing rub for your ribs. Turn the ribs over and remove the membrane from the back. Coat both sides of ribs with the already-prepared rub, pressing the seasoning into the meat. Don’t be shy, you want to make sure those spices are going to cook into the ribs for the perfect smoky flavor.

When the ribs are done, gently remove them from the slow cooker and place them on your BBQ grill. Make sure you add that BBQ sauce you just made! You can also place these in an oven instead, on a foil-lined sheet pan. If you go this route, heat the oven to broil, with the BBQ sauce on. Broil until bubbly and caramelized. The last step is the easiest, go enjoy! Smith’s Food & Drug is a division of The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR), one of the world’s largest grocery retailers. We all understand that there are many medical and health conditions that will cause ED, and you may have to use a medication or hormone replacement therapy. And, many of us know that there are lifestyle choices that interfere with erections such as alcohol, illicit drugs, cigarettes and marijuana that cause a decrease of testosterone and an increase of estrogen – just the opposite of what you need to fire up your libido. For most men, if you stop the usage of those substances, you’ll stand tall and firm on demand.

Tired of drug side effects? Want a natural therapy?

By Van Harding, LAc Sex is great – fun, exciting, exhilarating and downright necessary for creating a family. It is alarming that erectile dysfunction is settling in on a younger age group each decade and we must question, why?

Health Risks:

YOUR BEST

LEARNING THE NATURAL CAUSES OF ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION (ED) AND CHANGING YOUR DIET/THINKING CAN HELP YOU DITCH THE LITTLE BLUE PILL AND ITS HEALTH RISKS

Let’s not forget about the impact of stress. For decades it’s been known that when young men lack confidence from minimal sexual experience, they can suffer from ED and, with an understanding partner and banking play time in the bedroom, the issue will resolve. Also known is that the stresses of work or finances can contribute to ED, keeping a guy on the sidelines but, once the stressors reside, he’s back in game. What’s happening here is that stress is partnered with fear. Yep – you read correctly, fear is a factor. It is THE secret partner that hijacks your nervous system and prevents your brain from signaling the nerve cells in the penis to release nitric oxide, which “opens the valves to fill the penis with blood and closes the drain valves to keep it firm.” This is the mechanism that Viagra works with to support erections. What if you’re confident in the bedroom, but the stressors have passed and nervousness/anxiety still plague you? You may be struggling with shame. Psychology and psychiatric researchers discovered that when a person experiences thoughts of shame, it triggers fear and they enter the “fight, flight, freeze” response. This is an impossible physical state for a typical erection because the body is being controlled by the sympathetic nervous system – survival mode. The psychotherapeutic treatment is not to overcome fear, but is the healing of shameful thinking about one’s self image. Instead of taking an anti-anxiety medication, you need to love yourself. Change your thinking and you can overcome ED. What if you’re none of the above? You do not have a medical or health condition, you do not use substances that cause hormone imbalances and you don’t have a psychological issue. You could be suffering from insufficient levels of nitric oxide caused by dietary-induced inflammation and/or antibodies that reduce production of testosterone. What is this food you’re eating that’s wrecking your sex life? Modern day grains and/or cow’s dairy, rice, corn, oats and brewer’s yeast! The current name for the medical diagnosis is Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS). Here’s what happening. If your immune system has become gluten intolerant, it reacts to gluten by causing inflammation and the chronic state of inflammation (by continually eating grains or dairy) damages the blood vessels’ ability to produce the needed nitric oxide for blood flow control to the penis. The immune system can also produce antibodies against the testicles, which over time damages tissue and reduces the quantity of testosterone the testicles can produce, thus causing low libido and subsequently ED. New blood tests can identify if you are gluten intolerant and if you have antibodies to the testicles. If you’re dealing with inflammation-induced nitric oxide deficiency and/or low testosterone due to antibodies to testicles, the elimination of gluten and dairy from the diet combined with nutritional supplements to repair the blood vessels just might return you to full function. There are many serious health consequences of using Viagra and other therapies. Something to reflect upon is this – how comfortable is your lover being with a partner who is at a high risk of a stroke or heart attack? The side effects of a gluten-and dairy-free diet typically include weight loss of belly fat and more energy. It seems to me that a slimmer waistline and a risk-free bedroom salute to your lover are more appealing. For more information, call Van Harding at 530-536-5084 or visit www. TahoeNeuroHealing.com. SKIN CARE: IT’S COOL TO BE SMOOTH MICHELLE CZARKA, OWNER OF PANTRY PRODUCTS, SHARES SKIN CARE PRODUCTS AND TIPS By Healthy Beginnings Staff Practicing a daily skin care regime is just as important for men as it is women – sorry, guys, it’s true. Incorporating a daily skin care routine into your life will help you avoid dry skin, delay the first signs of wrinkles and even fight blemishes and acne. Michelle Czarka, owner of Pantry Products in Reno (a small batch modern apothecary that handcrafts bath and body products), shares some all-natural products and essential oils tips to help men achieve healthy skin, without all the “foo foo” creams.

Submitted Photo

In Home Alone, we all remember Kevin McCallister prepping his freshly shaved face with after shave and, well, feeling the burn. It’s likely that many men can relate to Kevin’s after shave pain (and, this is probably why most avoid skin care products, altogether). Ultimately, men aren’t socially conditioned to care about their skin. Skin care is associated with femininity – only women use creams, gels, lotions and goos. Right? And, sometimes, all those fancy feminine products stink and sting.

Beard Oil Is your beard unruly? Dispensing 3-6 drops (depending on beard length and density) into your hands, rubbing together and working into your wild beard will help condition your skin and ease irritation and itchiness. Beard oil can also help soften course hair and prevent split ends. And, because beards can be gross, find a product that has essential oils to help fight bacteria (and add a manly scent).

Pre Shave Pre shave products help prepare the skin for the harsh reality of shaving, protecting the skin from redness, razor burn and flare-ups. After Shave Hate to shave? After shave helps to control razor bumps, reduce irritation, tighten pores and lock in moisture naturally (thanks to witch hazel). Find an after shave that incorporates aloe vera gel to help condition the skin. It’s important to cleanse and moisturize daily. Avoid certain fragrances and dyes, and use organic, natural skin care products. Various essential oils including jojoba, sunflower, avocado, geranium, clove and cedarwood help relieve dry and irritated skin. Women – if you’re reading this – sneak these products onto his side of the sink (he’ll thank you). UNLOCKING THE MYSTERY OF

WEIGHT LOSS By Dr. Corazon Ibarra, M.D., H.M.D.

Tireless hours have been spent by men trying to lose weight in the gym, but it seems like almost everyone is fighting an uphill climb to reach success. There is a widespread desire to lose weight, but there is also a lot of frustration that weightloss efforts can have little or no effect. Clearly something is wrong in the way we try to manage our weight. A study found that of those who try to lose weight by dieting every year, only around 5 percent successfully achieve and maintain weight loss. So what’s going wrong? Frequently overlooked weight loss factors: 1. Your genes don’t fit. The gene FTO is often referred to as the ‘fat gene.’ Several studies have shown a variation of the FTO gene to be associated with higher body mass index (BMI), including one led by scientists at University College London, who found that those with the variant were up to 70 percent more likely to become obese. FTO affects the circulation of ghrelin, known as ‘the hunger hormone,’ which regulates appetite – meaning they feel hungry again soon after meals.

It’s important to stress that you are not destined to be overweight simply because you have a certain gene variant. Being aware of the condition will help enable you to adjust your diet accordingly. 2. Exercise alone is not enough.

While exercise is great for our health and can help to reduce the risk of developing heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, dementia and even some cancers, its efficacy in helping to lose weight is only as good as the food that fuels your exercise. As Dr. Aseem Malhotra, author of a 2015 study of physical inactivity and obesity, puts it, “You cannot outrun a bad diet.” What’s the one thing we all know about exercise? It makes you hungry and thirsty, right? So if you consume a lot of unhealthy food and drink, then the more you exercise the more junk you’re going to consume. Consequently, a program of vigorous exercise can actually result in weight gain. 3. Diets don’t work. This is pertaining to the fad diets that require you to focus on just one thing for a period of time. Whether it’s counting the calories, starving yourself, avoiding one specific ingredient or anything along those lines, these types of diet are not a recipe for long-term weight control. These diets make you feel deprived and increase your sense of deserving a reward. As soon as the diet ends, you give yourself that reward by gorging on all the things the diet told you to avoid. The weight piles back on and often bounces back up to a higher level than where you began. 4. Toxins take their toll. There are several ways toxins can impede our ability to lose weight. Firstly, there are the toxins we ingest voluntarily such as alcohol, which has long been linked with weight gain. Alcohol lowers inhibitions and increases appetite, meaning you’re

Excess alcohol consumption also has an irritating effect on the lining of the stomach, which can lessen the rate and efficiency of food digestion. And, alcohol damages the liver, which plays a vital part in breaking down fats for fuel. A detox program can help you get rid of these kinds of toxins.

metabolism. When you have an alteration in the production of these hormones (e.g. insulin resistance) your metabolism slows right down, making weight loss more difficult. Hormone testing can help with this.

5. You’re not sleeping enough.

Losing weight can be hard at the best of times but it’s a whole lot harder when you don’t know what you’re up against. There’s nothing more frustrating than feeling like you’re doing all the right things – exercising, eating well – yet seeing little evidence of it each time you step on the scale.

It may sound counterintuitive that sleep can help you lose weight, but there’s plenty of research behind it. A 2013 study from the University of California, Berkeley found that when you’re deprived of sleep, the reward centers of your brain respond much more favorably to high-calorie junk food. At the same time, you experience a reduction of activity in the frontal cortex, which is involved in decision making. Essentially, a tired brain not only craves unhealthy food, but it’s also less likely to fight that impulse. 6. Think thyroid. In terms of weight loss, it is an underactive thyroid that causes problems. The thyroid is responsible for the release of several hormones involved in the regulation of your

THE DREAMS OF A DYING WOMAN PART I

By Andy Drymalski, Ed.D.

Dreams can be difficult to interpret. This is not just because they speak a language of images and symbols, but also because it’s not always obvious what aspect of your life they are referring to. While most dreams offer insight into your current attitudes, relationships and life situation, some dreams bring insight into your past and others into your future. Your unconscious knows things you don’t know. For example, it knows when and how you will die. And sometimes it gives you information about these things so that you can prepare for what is to come. This is one reason it is helpful to keep a dream journal. Often it is only with the passage of time and more dreams that certain themes become apparent and the meaning of earlier dreams is made clear. In this and subsequent articles, we will examine the dreams of a dying woman. All of them occurred before she even knew she was ill. She did not know, but her unconscious knew, and through her dreams gave hints of what was coming. Nine months before it was discovered that she had cancer, and 11 months before she died, a woman in her early 70s, whom we’ll call Lila, had the following dream:

I’m in a car with some people who are giving me a ride to somewhere? A man is driving. We all visit. I’m in the back seat. They want to stop and get snacks. I say no problem. I think I have my wallet with some money in it – but then I discover that I don’t have it. My purse is also missing. I feel terrible. I don’t want someone else providing for me. I want to be responsible for myself. I decide to call for someone to meet us and pick me up. We drive across a damp, flat meadow with soil and grass showing on it, toward some trees, which are dense and dark. Then I realize a much younger, 1950s version of my mother is coming to pick me up. I’m not happy. The dream begins with a journey, a journey to an unidentified place with people Lila did not recognize. It is a journey into the unconscious, the unfamiliar. The dreamer discovers that she is missing her wallet and purse. Since a wallet usually holds forms of identification such as a driver’s license, it is a common symbol of our conscious identity and role within society. To be missing your wallet therefore suggests an opportunity for transformation, the loss of an old role or identity so that a new role and sense of self can be born. The dreamer is uncomfortable with this situation and calls for someone to pick her up. She wants to be restored to her familiar role. The car drives over a damp meadow toward a dark, dense forest. She is “off road” now, off the well-traveled, structured paths of society. She is entering the land of the unconscious – new territory, unknown and mysterious. There she is met, much to her chagrin, by her mother. Lila’s mother, deceased at the time of the dream, did not treat her well when she was alive. Although her mother lived to be 90, she is in her 30s in the dream. (It is not uncommon in visitation dreams for the deceased person to assume the age they were in the prime of their life.) A strange turn of events is occurring in the dreamer’s life. As far as she knows, her health is very good. Yet, instead of being picked up by someone from the land of the living, she is picked up by someone from the land of the dead. Perhaps her mother, whom she loved but disliked, was sent by the unconscious as a messenger and chauffer because the thought of dying was so distasteful and abhorrent to Lila. Approximately 3 months after this dream and 6 months before her diagnosis, Lila had another curious dream:

Healthy Beginnings | June 2017

“While most dreams offer insight into your current attitudes, relationships and life situation, some dreams bring insight into your past and others into your future. Your unconscious knows things you don’t know.” I’m in a little old-fashioned house like my grandmother used to own. Xavier (my significant other) is with me. Older couples are bringing us food. Some come to the front door and some to the back. All were friendly and the food was good. The activities seemed almost funeral-like. I remember one food item being like an egg sandwich I had as a child. The crust was rather lumpy and there was pickle relish on it. We let the folks know that we had to leave for some appointments. Then we found ourselves in a small business, an older grocery store with a diner. There was an older woman on a gurney by the door when we came in. She asked if we could help her. She was lost. She handed me a crumpled 3x5 card with an address on it. She was trying to find that place. We were surprised – it was our place in this little old town. Interestingly, after Lila was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, things played out very similar to parts of this dream. For example, many people, mostly older church friends, brought homemade meals for her and Xavier to eat. They came to both the front and back doors, and there was a funeral-like atmosphere, for Lila’s prognosis was poor from the start. Impending death and a sense of paying last respects was present. In addition, she had numerous doctor appointments to attend to, so visits had to be scheduled around these.

One of the food items reminds her of an egg sandwich she had as a child. An egg is a symbol of new life, perhaps a promise of life after death. It also reminds her of childhood, as if her life is coming full circle – a return to where she began. At a grocery store she and Xavier encounter an old woman on a gurney who is lost. The place she wants to get to is the very place where Lila and Xavier live. Since there was no one in her outer life who was actively seeking her help, it is fair to ask if the woman on the gurney was not a foreshadowing of Lila and her future condition, for she died at home in a rented hospital bed. [To be continued with more dreams next month.] For more information, contact Dr. Andy Drymalski, Reno and Carson City psychologist, at 775-527-4585 or www.renocarsonpsychologist.com. IMPROVE YOUR PERIPHERAL VISION AND REDUCE TENSION AS YOU RELAX YOUR NECK –

Wake Up Your Brain &

Get Your Body Back!

THE FELDENKRAIS METHOD By Carole Bucher, BA, GCFP/T

With the Feldenkrais Method

1. Look straight ahead softly and notice your visual field; just observe what you see comfortably with your eyes forward. Have your feet flat on the ground, knees apart, arms and hands relaxed.

Life-changing classes & private sessions to improve movement, health, and performance in all your activities. ~For adults at all levels of fitness~

2. Begin to turn your head slowly from side to side as you notice the range and the quality of your movement. Does your head move smoothly? Are your eyes traveling on the horizon? Notice how far down your spine you are turning. 3. Pause with your head and eyes forward. Increase your visual field actively so that you have more peripheral vision, up and down and side to side. Notice that your visual field has expanded and you can see more now with less effort. 4. Continue to keep this expanded visual field and begin to turn your head slowly from side to side, noticing how this changes the range and ease of your movement. Keep your breathing soft, and sense the movement all the way down to your pelvis. Then rest. 5. Consciously practice expanding your visual field whenever you feel tension in your neck and eyes. This will help relax and ground you and, at the same time, increase your awareness and mental acuity.

How Feldenkrais Works - 3 Unique Learning Principles • SENSING YOUR BONES: relieve muscular tension, reduce pain and

injury, improve alignment, function.

• DEVELOPING AWARENESS & ATTENTION: learn to move mindfully,

improve cognition, balance and coordination.

• WORKING WITH INTENTION: restore vitality, creativity, healing and

ease; recover more quickly from illness, surgery and injury.

RECHARGING YOUR SUMMER GARDEN: NUTRIENT BOOST AND REGULATED HYDRATION TIPS By Farmer Craig Witt, Full Circle Owner, Soil Enthusiast to suffocation of the roots, while too little watering can deplete the soil and roots of essential hydration. Different vegetables need different watering routines, but no matter what you’re watering, routines are influenced by a few characteristics of our arid climate: 1. 2. 3.

Getty Images

April has delivered its showers, May is blooming with flowers, and June … well June shows off our sun’s power. At the peak of growing season, plants will begin to feel the high desert heat, along with the pressure and the utter exhaustion from growing at such an outstanding rate. Help them beat the heat with regulated watering methods, proper nutrition and mulch. Accurately watering your plants can be challenging without proper knowledge of soil, climate and other planting factors. As a general rule, too much watering can lead

Our soil does not have the “digestive capacity” to eat raw materials. That means it needs to be fed a lot of all-natural compost and other natural soil amendments to develop (and maintain) humus as a nourishing environment for your plants. Living in the Truckee Meadows valley, we see a decent amount of wind. Strong winds can interrupt watering from sprinklers, and increase plant evapotranspiration, which deprives your garden of essential hydration. Our high desert sun can be a real scorcher, and that calls for regulated watering methods.

So, how much water is too much or too little? It depends on the soil you’re working with. Clay soils retain water, causing the water to spread out horizontally. If watered too frequently, the moisture will deoxidize the soil, resulting in a weaker root system. To avoid this, plants in clay soils need to be watered less frequently than plants in loam or sandy soils. Sandy soils have a noticeably difficult time holding in water, this could spell dehydration. After watering, the moisture tends to run straight down and out of the soil. Loam soils are considered ideal and are a mixture of sand, silt and clay. Loam soils have a better balance of holding nutrients than any other soil, and are best suited for highdemand vegetables and fruits, like tomatoes or strawberries.

Green Thumb Tip: Using raised beds and filling them with a sandy clay loam soil can take the soil variable right out of the equation. Raised beds also aid in proper drainage to avoid “over watering.” Northern Nevadan soils are primarily clay – surprise, surprise – so it lacks balanced essential nutrients for proper growth. As we discussed in previous articles, gardening in Nevada soil takes a little time, a little patience and a whole lot of love. Growing a healthy garden includes sustainable soil food provided by quality compost, long-term nutrition through minerals and regulated watering methods. Drip irrigation systems are a great method for regulating hydration, keeping your previous plants evenly moist. Depending on where you have your plants growing, the timer, the emitters and duration of watering will vary. Plants in small pots, for example, should be watered daily for brief amounts of time (no more than 5 minutes). For small shrubs planted in the ground, the timer should be set for about 30 minutes. Small trees need to be watered every few weeks for 4-6 hours. This can be accomplished with a deep dripwatering stake. Note: These watering times are approximate. Below are the most common types of irrigation systems:

• Find Nevada farm products • Find farmers markets or farm stands • Find restaurants & retailers that buy from Nevada farms

• Eat healthy! Find out what’s in season Learn more at NevadaGrown.com

36

Porous Soaker Hose System: Typically used for shrubs and hedges, this system is extremely porous (hence the name) and basically sweats water along the length of the hose. Because this system is made out of recycled automobile tires, they are naturally durable.

Emitter Drip System: The emitter drip system is commonly used when planting in clay soils. This system consists of several hoses that are laid out throughout the planting area. Each hose has holes about 15 inches apart, which release drops of water according to the timer. You can also add different types of emitters to individual plants with this system. This allows you to change the flow and amount of water to individual plants. You can throw on micro emitters, big emitters and even flood irrigate plants.

Green Thumb Tip: Full Circle likes this system in Nevada if you want an automatic system. You need to learn a little bit more about irrigation systems; however, this system can pay off. Dripworks.com is a great resource for information and supplies.

Healthy Beginnings | June 2017

Your Hose: This is the old school way of watering (flood irrigation). Just use your hose. Depending on how you set up your garden, this method is great for “deep watering.” Let the hose fill up an area with 1-2 inches of water that will soak deep into the soil. For example, if you leave a 2-inch “lip” around your raised bed, you just put the hose in, let it fill up the bed, and you’re done. Many of your garden plants (flowers are different) actually do not like to get watered often with little amounts of water. They like to get a lot of water less frequently. You want to get the water deep.

Green Thumb Tip: This is the best method for tomatoes. Soak the beds or areas where the tomatoes are with a big dose of water once ever 3-4 days. If you have the proper soil and mulch, with deep watering, you can water once every 3-4 days even in the middle of Nevada summers. To encourage drought tolerance, use fertile, organic mulch on top of your soil. Think of mulch as a natural, moisturizing sunscreen, it protects soil from harsh climates while saving important nutrients from drought. It suppresses weed growth! Plus, it protects and stimulates the beneficial soil microlife, which leads to better nutrient absorption. Recharge Your Garden: Step-By-Step Summer Garden Recharge 1. Add ¼ inch of all-natural soil amendment (Full Circle BOOST) to the soil surface of your garden to boost mid-summer nutrition. 2. Add 1 inch of fertile, all-natural mulch to the top of the compost to hold in extra moisture. 3. Water 1-2 inches “flood irrigation style.” 4. Ooh and ahh and your rapidly growing garden!

Healthy Beginnings | June 2017

A Note On Summer Lawn Watering: Many lawns, especially bluegrass, fescues and ryegrass, dry out during the heat of summer. But there’s no need to panic. Slow and consistent watering will keep your lawn alive. Low frequency longer duration watering builds deep roots. Refrain from watering every day and wasting water. Give your lawn about 2 inches per week. Step-By-Step Lawn Maintenance 1. Sharpen the blade on your mower. 2. Mow lawn as needed leaving it 3 inches high. Never cut more than ½ of the total grass height at one time. 3. Redistribute lawn clippings across area with a mulching blade. 4. Add an application of ¼ of all-natural soil amendment over the lawn. Water it in. 5. Water lawn with 1.5-2 inches of water per week. 6. Watch your lawn green up and hold more water in the hot summer months! Ensure your summer garden is properly hydrated and strengthened for the Northern Nevadan summer. Humus holds 6 times its weight in water! Each cubic yard of Full Circle’s BOOST contains over 300 pounds of additional minerals and wholesome ingredients plants need to stay healthy and maintain consistent growth. We’ve shared this information to help you create a more sustainable and nutritious garden this year for your family. Please reach out to us with any questions, tips or tricks at info@fullcirclecompost.com.

We specialize in chronic headache care. Botulinum toxin (BOTOX®) injections are performed into muscles for spasticity management under electrodiagnostic and/or ultrasound guidance, as well as for migraine headache prevention.

5 things you should know about BOTOX® treatment: 1.

It prevents headaches and migraines before they even start. BOTOX® prevents on
