Dear readers, Welcome to our first edition. In 2013 I founded The Snobby Runway as an online source for high-end luxury lifestyle and fashion, as well as presenting premium products. With our first digital edition I believe we have created a publication that really targets wealthy consumers, both male and female, and brings high-end luxury to the elite. Through unique and exclusive features, we bring you the best in lifestyle, fashion, beauty, art, food & drink, property and travel; worldwide and under one brand name – The Snobby Runway. I have had many mentors whilst living between the UK and Dubai, pulling me in every direction from retail, fashion and art to luxury brokerage before transitioning into travel and last but not least the corporate world of international branding, advertising, media and marketing. In 2008 my aspirations led me to the Middle East, Asia, Europe and the USA where I was surrounded by a deluge of cultures and traditions, all of which lead me to create The Snobby Runway. Our international team of journalists and photographers travel and write exclusive content which combines our passions and knowledge into one luxury and highly informative digital magazine. In this issue, we’ll indulge you in exclusive features and interviews; from triple Michelin starred restaurants to talented artists through super-yachts and Cristiano Ronaldo’s new footwear line. We take you from a luxury safari retreat to an underwater restaurant and still have time to review a watch designed for astronauts. So flip through our pages and discover the luxurious lifestyle and culture that now no longer seems so far away. I hope that you enjoy reading our first edition. Yours,

A note from our Creative Director... Hello and welcome to the first digital edition of The Snobby Runway. When I first met our Editor-in-Chief, Orlagh, in December 2014 and was asked to undertake this project, my formative thought was to create something stylish in a classical sense, something that doesn’t bend to the vagaries of trend while keeping a luxurious air about it, that is, of course, why we’re here after all. It has been my first project as a Creative Director, having spent all my working life behind a lens, so it was somewhat of a learning curve for me. That coupled with the fact we gave ourselves little over two weeks to produce something worthy of our readership made for an interesting experience but we never wavered in the face of it all and we hope now that we can give you something that you’ll find as enjoyable to read as it was to produce. Our aim was to create a product that not only looks great but sounds great too, something that delivers the finest things in life and has the sense that it belongs among the elite and better known, more established publications despite our relatively newborn status. I suppose we will always think of this first edition as our baby but it is also a building block to what will hopefully be a long running and established medium for us to convey the finer things in life to our discerning audience. Thanks for reading.

t’s not just the fashion powerhouses that display their wears at LFW, lesser known designers from Great Britain also get the chance to showcase their designs on the catwalk at London Fashion Week, something I think is highly important to help new creative talents shine in this competitive, multibillion pound industry. I love seeing the continued support from fashion show organisers, retail businesses, publications and other media outlets. The energy builds, all heads turn, spotting and analysing each look as it appears on the runway. It’s almost a game as buyers and celebrities compete to have first dibs on the best collections. This is what makes it so fun. As I watched emerging new fashion designers send their models, dressed in their finest new designs, down the catwalk the looks got better and better. What brightened up the runways for the fall season has truly taken my breath away. The designs had a lot of pattern and a lot of colour with increased embellishments that seemed heavier and bigger. Cropped tops and high-waist flairs take us back to the 60’s. Jonathan Saunders’ Fall 2015 collection brought us a series of retro printed, above the knee dresses in a mixture of vivid colours, teamed with oversized round sunglasses for those sunny winter days. Oversized coats, including a beautiful, floor length, bronze design by Temperley London, along with

shiny silver blazers and flared crop trousers added serious glamour for the perfect winter evening look. Bigger fashion brands, like Burberry Prorsum, showcased silhouettes with floral denim wrap over’s, open breasted dresses and wool knits to warm us up and keep us stylish during the colder months. Chain-mail, zigzag detailed shifts with daisy appliqués by Scottish Designer Christopher Kane were bold and disco-esque, while twotoned velvet and lace dresses fitted with colourful seat buckles, which I took as sexual innuendo, really stood out. House of Holland played with different silhouettes, their necklines high as ever, as they presented in a selection of happy pink and orange colours in silk, satin and cotton all tailored into long, swinging trench coats, skirts and tops. These were accessorised with big black belts, thin neck scarves and black painted boots for a chic and feminine look. Lace, sheer and leather were also out in force throughout the collections. Erdem Autumn’s suggestive pencil dress in purple leather, with cut out floral detailing and a plunged, frill, v–neck blew me away. All the designers delivered way beyond my expectations and I’m sure the majority of fashion obsessives enjoyed the designs from both new and established brands. I just can’t wait to begin shopping for my winter wardrobe.

SPR I NG / SU MM E R 20 15 ST Y L E GU IDE TSR’S EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, ORLAGH MCLAUGHLIN, PRESENTS HER DIFINITIVE SS15 STYLE GUIDE

Spring/Summer 2015 is all about ruffles, denim, sheer and checked patterns, mixed in with simple classics like elegant blazers and crisp, cotton shirts. Here’s my list of must have styles to update your wardrobe with this season.

The Denim Dress: The hottest denim silhouette for the new year is the dress. Traditionally boxier, designers have now taken to the runways with stunning denim dresses in many styles. My favourite is the must have pleated denim. It gives the most feminine touch and works well with skyhigh heels for a night out or with moto boots for a more relaxed daytime look. The Gladiator Wedges: For summer, make sure you have a pair of gladiator wedges. Though previous years styles have leant towards a more minimalist version, bolder straps and ties are coming back with fervour for this year’s warm-weather months. The Pendant Necklace: Stash your statement necklaces after the new year and opt for one of the pendant variety instead. A slim, elongated chain with your pendant (or collection of charms!) hanging from it is this year’s go-to necklace style, which is both elegant and refined. The Chic Doctor Carry-All: A bag that’s both on trend and practical can be hard to find, but designers are coming to the rescue with chic, oversize bag options with a doctor’s style that doesn’t come across as too casual. Grab a luxe tote-size carryall in buttery soft leather or velvety suede. They are sophisticated and large enough to carry your life in but chic enough to take with you everywhere.

The Utility Skirt: Army and utility dressing is relaxing a bit and comes to you this year in the form of shirtdresses and wrap skirts. This traditionally casual, menswear inspired trend is being reborn with a fresh infusion of feminine charm. Alexander Wang 2015. Block Checks: In recent years we have seen many floral prints and 3-D flower embellishments in S/S collections, but this year check detailing is back in the style departments and fashion shows. Make a statement by dressing in checked patterns – the bigger check detailing you wear, the better. Something Light and Ruffled: Ruffles are the epitome of feminine charm, but you don’t want to look like you’re wearing a bad 80’s prom dress. This spring, wear ruffles in sheer fabrics with simple hemlines, understated peplums, and tiny accenting trims. Don’t go for anything too structured or stiff with these - it’s all about movement. Oversized Sunglasses: Accessorise in style this season, with oversized sunglasses. Wayfarer, aviator or oval-shaped frames glasses are all trending and make sure you spare no expense when tailoring the look to match your style.

BRIDE GUIDE TSR’s Editor-in-Chief, Orlagh McLaughlin, presents her on-trend bridal guide for the perfect wedding dress this season.

This season, more and more wedding bells will ring, bringing the romance and passion that every bride should have a chance to experience. Fashion weeks from Paris, New York, London and Milan brought a mixture of exquisite wedding gowns and accessories to the runway. Models wore silk, sheer lace, off-the-shoulder and personalised hemlines while there were sharp tailored tux designs for the groomsmen. Let’s look at some of my favourites.

Runway’s showed a bundle of flattering off-the-shoulder necklines this season and the one that has caught my eye is a soft silk chiffon ball gown by Marchesa. It’s thick silk straps are fixed delicately down the shoulder. This style is a breathtaking choice for that special day. Add sparkling earrings and a thin necklace that will rest on top of the feminine collarbone – so sensual. Halter Neck and Mermaid: With halter necks becoming popular on the scene, your shoulders are brought into the spotlight. I have fallen in love with this flattering halter neckline gown in ivory and gold by Val Stefani. Re - embroidered lace with Swarovski crystals adorn the halter neckline and bodice of a mermaid silhouette. It also has an open back that radiates sophistication with buttons and loops along the zipper. It will indefinably capture the attention of not only your husband to be, but all of your wedding guests too.

Colour: Wedding gowns are no longer long and white in the conventional sense. From my review on spring summer couture runways I saw that there exists distinctive colours and curve hugging styles as much more women are following the curvy outlines. Individual, personalised and unconventional wedding gowns tend to be chosen by more and more brides now. The Monique Lhuillier haute couture wedding gown for SS15 has to be one of my favourites, in lilac instead of traditional white or ivory – sometimes it’s fun to break the rules.

V-neck: The v-neck style originates from the Middle East and this season designers have stepped it up on the runway with the depth of the V in a demure style to fully plunging. My favourite from them all is the design by American based couture wedding dress designer, Lela Rose.

Sheer Lace and Short: With sheer lace, as see through as it can be and short as short as it can get, has a sex appeal from creating a visual temptation. Such wedding dresses leave everything to the imagination with the additional lace element, and perfectly combine sweetness and sex, which is so creative that a blushing bride can be transformed instantly.

A-line: The A-line style was first used by Christian Dior for his spring collection in 1955. Soon after, the A-Line dress design became the most wanted silhouette in Paris. My favourite A-line wedding gown is no other than the amazingly talented couture wedding designer, Naeem Khan. He has mastered the A-line neck in his latest spring bridal couture collection. It exudes elegance and a soft demure for a sweet and sophisticated bride to be.

Sweet Heart Neckline: The sweet heart is a classic, popular style that is seen in many wedding gowns. Brides can show their whole upper chest from their neckline, collar bone and down into her cleavage area, where the sweet heart design beautifully forms. It’s very hard for a bride to dismiss this style, especially the SS/15 2015 wedding gown by Reem Acra. Off-the-Shoulder:

- INTERVIEW -

LISELORE FROWI JN We learn a little more about this talented young Dutch designer

How did you get into fashion design? As a kid I was drawing every single day, it started with interiors and houses, trailer and maps. I was very young when I told my mother something new I’d discovered about myself; I could draw people! I started to draw girls and boys in coloured dresses. Later, when I was about eleven, I got to know fashion design as an actual profession. At first I assumed it would just be a fascination, but in the end it was an inevitable step for me to go to art school to study fashion design right after graduating high school. I’ll never regret the day I made this decision. What is your favourite thing about being a fashion designer? The dynamics and diversity that each day brings. Every day is different, you have to be very flexible and tangible. Every day is about decisions, making choices, it’s like a sport. I couldn’t live without it. My personal, most beloved moment of creating new work is the research on the concept and materials. This is the phase where I allow myself to make mistakes, because the unexpected can be very interesting for the end result. When developing materials, I lock myself up with all the sourced materials and concepts and start to try-out new things then from one step evolves the next. It feels like being a researcher in a lab. What has been your best experience so far since breaking into the fashion industry? Being part of the International Festival de Mode e Photographie in Hyeres. In April 2014 I was one of the ten fashionfinalists from all over the world. We spent three weeks in the South of France in the beautiful, artistic Villa de Noailles to prepare the shows and our presentation towards the jury. Those days I did not only learn so much, but also got to know so many inspiring people and for that I’m very grateful. I won the Prix Chloe with my design for Chloe, and this opened many new doors. I cannot wait

THE SNOBBY RUNW AY M AGAZI NE

- 19 -

to go back there this year. I’m invited to showcase my new collection at the ‘Formers’ platform as a previous finalist. What has inspired you to design your recent collections that blend a mixture of sport and luxury? With every design I create I ask myself whether I would wear it or not. For work I travel a lot so I want to feel comfortable and look great at the same time. I’ve always been interested to find the contrasts in my designs, whether this is about colours or materials, and sport and luxury are each other’s opposite but on the other hand they fit each other perfectly in modern life. You use many bright and energetic colours in your collections. Would you say that your use of these has some connection with injecting positive energy and a sense of movement in your luxurious sportswear line? I simply could not work without colour. Even white is a colour, and for me colours are ingredients to express my work. Sometimes I feel like a painter the way I build up my collections. I add layer by layer, and colours are part of this. Perhaps my passion for them adds the energy you see back in the collections. What type of fabrics do you use to create your garments? Many different ones. The process of design for me always starts with the fabrics. After my first internship at Peter Pilotto in 2012, I got to know the source of the most beautiful fabrics: Italy. After graduating, I got the chance to immediately do an internship at Mantero Seta S.p.A, one of the factories who produces the beautiful jacquards I saw at Pilotto. Their clients are from the high-luxury industry, such as Kenzo, Chanel and Prada. At this moment I still work for Mantero, as the creative director for their accessories collection: Mantero 1902. I feel very privileged to work on my own collection, but also to have the opportunity to work in the source of it all; textiles.

- INTERVIEW -

Where do you find the material that you work with and has there been any difficult challenges you have overcome when working with any fabric? Each new fabric has a different character you have to discover, so that will always be a challenge. I get my fabrics from all over the world. In my last collection we used a beautiful fluffy fabric from Japan. It’s all red with a very nice, shining touch and it looks like it has been knitted, but it’s woven. I like it when materials contain a little surprise, or if you need to have a second look. Who would normally wear the Liselore Frowijn brand? The woman I design for has a very energetic personality, with a similar lifestyle I want to have. She is not afraid to show the world her bold, androgyne and eclectic style and she is very sophisticated. When she buys garments she does it with care, it adds something to her carefully collected wardrobe.

What do you think would be your strongest skill as a designer? I think I am able to adapt myself to different circumstances. This is how I can put myself in the place of new clients and listen to what they have to say. As I said before, it is very important to contain a certain flexibility to fulfil this job. To do so you need a kind of healthy lifestyle with good food, enough sleep and a good team of people around you. I think I have been quite lucky with how things are going at this moment. I try to capture every opportunity that comes my way, but in the end you have to be very disciplined as well. Nothing just happens. What’s next for your brand? My first show in Paris is on March 3rd. I’m on the official calendar of Mode A Paris, and I’m very excited to meet new people and opportunities. www.liselorefrowijn.com

CIFON E LL I Getting a tailored suit is more than just obtaining a garment, it’s about the story behind it and the experience of having it made. by Andrew McNair

T

here are many ways to experience a tailor, and many stylists willing to dress you to your best. A lot of world-class tailors live on some of the most renowned streets in men’s fashion. London’s Savile Row, Fleet Street and Jermyn Street to name a few. None more though, than the capital of men’s elegance, Rue Marbeuf in Paris. I’d like to take you back to the very beginning of this shrine to male fashion, Cifonelli. The tailoring specialist, founded in 1980 by a man named Giuseppe, was built upon a passion for chic Italian elegance. His son Arturo moved the company to 31 Rue Marbeuf half a century later, and was the cornerstone for what is today one of the worlds most legendary streets in the business. He studied at the Ministers Cutting Academy in London and returned to Paris to combine what he’d learnt about the precision of English tailoring, with his fathers’ passion for Italian softness and comfort. Today, still obsessed with delivering the experience that we all expect from our tailor, Arturo’s grandsons maintain what is one of the most revered businesses in the industry, with over 130 years dressing men in the best cut fabrics the world has to offer. Keen to internationalise the business, Cifonelli launched their first ‘Ready to Wear’ collection in June last year. But the passion for bespoke menswear lives on. As you walk up the stairs in Rue Marbeuf, you approach a large wooden door, which Cifonelli say is ‘open to anyone with the curiosity to open it’. It’s like the store doubles up as a museum to historic tailoring. If you live in London, it may be a stretch to make the trip out there, especially since at least three trials are needed on your first purchase, but the Cifonelli brothers travel the world meeting clients, so make one trip out there. I mean, and lets be honest, you’d like your suit to tell more of a story than what it’s made of so while putting it on, remind yourself of the effort you went through to get it, the journey you took, the people you met along the way, and the staircase that took you up to the Mecca of suit tailoring. Luckily, we’ve just such a weekend planned out. Taking the Eurostar from London to the Gare du Nord in Paris on a Saturday morning will get you to there in just over two hours. The New Hotel is directly opposite the train

station and is simple, central, and elegant in it’s own way. Breakfast is served in a basement that looks like a stylish mid-evil chamber where you can enjoy croissants, toast, cereal and I kid you not, the greatest coffee I’ve ever tasted. Served with hot milk of course, this is mainland Europe remember. The rooms look out over the station, and a line of exquisite restaurants. A local scooter hire company will deliver a Vespa to your hotel to allow you to tour the city in a Parisian way, and collect it when you’re finished, for less than £60 a day. Rue Marbeuf is just a 20-minute ride from the hotel, provided you don’t decide to take a detour around the city; because let’s face it, there’s no better way to travel around the French capital. Once you arrive and push open that wooden door, you’re greeted by two of the world’s best suit tailors, with an impressive lineage, and your story begins to take shape. Cifonelli will dedicate around 80 hours to the making of a suit, with Milan-style buttonholes, step collars, half belts, and special lapels. The link between tailor and customer is uncanny. Getting the whole story is what tailoring is all about, making that look in the mirror as you fix your tie, all the more gratifying, so let your journey begin.

- INTERVIEW -

Tell us why you decided to develop your fashion line to include smart footwear? I really enjoyed launching my CR7 Underwear and Shirts ranges, and we’ve had a really great response, so for me extending the brand into formal footwear was very natural. I spend a lot of time in football boots for work and having great footwear is very important to me, both on and off the pitch, so I wanted to create something that is smart, is amazing quality, that looks good and that other people can share. Tell us about the brand. It is a collection of smart shoes which are made from premium quality materials that have a great fit and a stylish look. I really love great quality shoes and the opportunity to create my own high end collection was really exciting to me. What made you partner with Portugal Footwear? Portugal Footwear’s reputation for quality craftsmanship and the fact that they only use the best Portuguese materials was very important to me. We share the same belief that quality is key and I really respect their commitment and dedication to producing the best and most sophisticated products. What is the similarity between CR7 Footwear and your Underwear and Shirts collections? All of my CR7 ranges are based on the same principle – classic, timeless styles that have an understated yet premium look. My CR7 Footwear range includes a variety of really wearable smart styles. I believe that footwear can completely change an outfit and gives the finishing touch to a look so I’ve made sure the collection includes different options for different occasions, but all very refined. How involved were you in the design process? Very involved, I wanted to make sure every shoe was something that I loved and would be proud to wear. I worked really hard on this collection to make sure that the range is both stylish and versatile. We’ve used some of my favourite colours and have paid a lot of attention to small detail in the shoes. I really like the process and it’s been great working together with the team. Did you collaborate with people to create the collection? Of course, the team at Portugal Footwear, many friends, designers and people in the industry have given me advice and worked with me on my projects. This is my third fashion venture so I feel like my knowledge is growing but of course I am always I’m still learning.

What materials are the shoes created with and why? We only used the best fabrics and materials as we wanted the shoes to be durable as well as stylish. We wanted them to have comfort, quality and a great look and really to be the best. The craftsmanship in these shoes is so important, we only work with the best and most experienced artisans- real experts in shoe making- so that we are making something that is easy to wear and also a great investment. Is there anything that you learnt about the footwear making process that particularly interested you? Many things. For example, it takes over 20 different materials to make each pair of shoes- the process is far more detailed that I imagined. We only use leather for our shoes and they are painted by hand, so it is impossible to find two pairs that are the same, making them truly exclusive. Our docksiders and driving shoes are handsewn too- we make sure that the crafting process on all of our pieces is truly bespoke with amazing attention to detail and it was so interesting to be a part of creating something truly special. What’s your favourite formal shoe from the collection? Of course I really like all of the collection, so it’s difficult to pick a favourite! I think there’s a shoe in the range for every formal occasion to compliment every man. I’d say my favourite if I have to choose is the jazz dressy oxford brogue as it’s very easy to wear. But then I love them all, they all have pride of place in my wardrobe! Do you have any styling tips of how to wear the shoes? The great thing about the CR7 Footwear collection is that there are lots of designs so they can suit lots of different smart looks. I wear the luxury styles, like the Oxford Brogue, with tailored trousers and a well fitted CR7 shirt. I love using colour and like designs that are vibrant so I’ve incorporated this into the Footwear range, especially with some navy and red designs. These styles are perfect for Spring and Summer so I’m excited that the range is finally out so I can start wearing them, and so other people can enjoy wearing them too! Where will the collection be available? The collection is available online at www.cr7footwear.com and can be shipped anywhere in the world. It is also available from many of the best retailers around the world.

- LIFESTYLE CONTEMPORY ARTIST

BRAQUE MIRO TALKS TO OUR CREATIVE DIRECTOR, JOE GREAVES- LORD, ABOUT HIS WORK Braque Miro, named by his father after two of his favourite artists - Georges Braque & Joan Miro - is a 27-year-old, self taught, contemporary artist from the south coast of England. His parents moved there shortly before he was born; his father from New York and his mother, who is of Native American decent, from Rhode Island.

G

rowing up, Braque never really thought about his talent as an artist, ‘It was just something I did since I can remember,’ he tells me, ‘There were always lots of great art books around the house growing up that I’d copy works from and make my own versions in different styles.’

He’s going to be producing some large scale pieces on Bull hide as well as releasing a line of t shirts this spring that will all feature hand-painted, hand-cut, and hand-sewn leather pockets. All of which are unique, original and wearable works of art.

Although he has, of course, been influenced by many artists; from the meticulous and painstaking detail of M.C Escher, who fascinated Braque growing up, to the Italian Masters, his name sake, Miro, and the Spanish greats Gaudi and Picasso, who he still finds so intriguing. He also came to love the work of pop artists Mel Ramos, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist, Tom Wesselmann and Richard Hamilton. Stylistically, what has formulated is a result of all of these different influences that he learnt from and admired from a young age.

I ask Braque where he sees the art world moving, ‘It’s funny you ask me this, around Christmas time I was in a West End bar talking with an older gentleman, he asked me what I did and I told him I’m an artist. He then explained how his wife was in the design industry, and said to me, ‘I’m sorry to tell you this, and I’ve told my wife also, but you’re fucked. You’re all fucked.’ He then went on to talk about digital influence, and we discussed David Hockney’s exhibit of digital works, £5 logo designs online etc, etc. ‘However…’ and I sang in my best Marvin Gaye voice, ‘There ain’t nothing like the real thing, baby!’ then went on to explain how there will always be a demand and appreciation for real, hand made things made with hours if not years of trial and error, craftsmanship, passion, blood, sweat and tears, by real human beings that are exceptional at what they do. That personal touch, all these great things that technology cannot replace, which applies to so many disciplines. And that extends to most other things like conversations, food, sex… Ain’t nothing like the real thing right? He agreed.’

‘When I was a kid I never used colour, just pencil, and I worked very privately until I got it right. Even then I was very selective about who saw it and was reserved in showing anybody.’ Today though, he’s the opposite. It’s all about bright colours and he wants to share his work with anybody and everybody, because he thinks ‘Art is for everybody and it’s everywhere in our everyday lives.’ Nowadays he works primarily with acrylic paint, usually on canvas or card and sometimes wood, or anything else he finds interesting or relevant for a particular project or piece. Recently he’s been producing a few pieces he calls ‘Art Imitating Art’, which are tongue in cheek references to famous artists and artworks. For example his ‘Flatulent Child’ piece refers to Keith Haring’s ‘Radiant Child’. ‘They’re all just ideas I had that made me laugh so I hope it gives others a smile too,’ he says. As well as this, he was recently asked to produce artwork for a movie coming out this summer called ‘Back In Business’, a sequel to the hit film ‘The Business’. The film is set in Ibiza in the 90’s so it was perfect outlet for him to throw some bright colours together and get a really nice feel to it. Braque is currently painting on various grains and bespoke dyes of Bavarian Bull hide. It’s a beautiful material not only to look at but also to feel and it has a real air of luxury about it. The subjects and styles of the pieces he’s experimented with so far are all relevant not only to the material but to the grain (whether fine or full) and the individual colours of the leather. ‘I really like the raw, free, expressive and simple approach with these, they’re about the individual marks, the brushstrokes and how they compliment the grain of the hide and the overall piece.’

Braque also believes that art is a great investment. ‘In most cases, especially if you are starting a collection, it will only appreciate in value and you don’t need a fortune to begin. You can pick up things like limited editions, smaller size originals and sculptures by many great artists for as little as £100. For a few thousand you can begin with some very established household names. Plus it’s fun, you never know which artists or pieces will seriously appreciate in value. Buy on instinct. Buy what you love. If it makes you feel something, if it makes you feel great, makes you smile, laugh or even cry then buy it.’ His favourite piece he created himself is called ‘Lion & Cub’. ‘I think most living things can relate to it, not just people. Not only the warm colours from the ‘sunset’ dye of the Bull hide, but the relationship, the power of it. The demeanour of the two animals, the love and the protective and protected nature of it. I really enjoyed using the pallet knife to create a great texture with it too, and finally, most importantly, it was really made from the heart.’ More of Braque’s work can be found at: www.valenzaart.co.uk

F E STIVA L de CAN N E S WE TAKE A LOOK AT THE CONTENDERS Very little has been disclosed about the official selection, but we think the films below are certain to make an appearance.

Movie: The Tale of Tales Genre: Comedy, Romance,Sci-Fi Country: Italy Director: Matteo Garrone Cast: Salma Hayek and Vincent Cassel Another likely contender is ‘The Tale of Tales’. Shot in Italy, it’s a truly ambitious project that’s based on Italian poet and writer Giambattista Basile’s seminal masterpiece ‘The Pentamerone’. Written in Neapolitan dialect between 1634 and 1636 it is considered one of the best Italian baroque literary oeuvres of all time. It’s also considered as the first modern fairy tale collection containing the original versions of ‘Cinderella’ and ‘Sleeping Beauty’ as well as other well known fables. It has been a source of inspiration for many writers including the fathers of the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen. Though the information is scarce, we know that Garrone will be focussing on only three of the 50 tales contained in the volume. We can’t wait to see how this gritty and realistic director will interpret these well known fairy tales, which are much less child friendly than their best known versions. Matteo Garrone, when asked about the film, said ‘I chose to enter Basile’s world and make it my own because when I read them I immediately felt these stories were something familiar. I really connected with their spirit, their irony and also with their dark aspects. In his fables I found that mix of real and unreal that has always characterised what I strive for as an artist. This project could seem far-removed from the rest of my work to date. But actually I think it pretty much fits in with what I’ve done so far. Among my movies, “The Embalmer,” or “First Love” or even “Gomorra,” and also “Reality” all had fable-like elements. Perhaps in those cases I took my cue from reality to transfigure it into a fantasy-like, or dreamlike, dimension. Whereas this time I’m doing the reverse. I’ve taken fable-like situations and turned them into something more realistic and believable.’ Movie : The Lobster Country: Greece Director: Yorgos Lanthimos Cast: John C. Reilly, Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz and Lea Seydoux After ‘Dogtooth’ and ‘Alps’, we’re pretty much ready for whatever Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos has to throw at us next, and it looks like he has a doozy coming our way. He’s managed to round up an all-star cast for his next effort ‘The Lobster’. The story, as always, is anything but conventional. It takes place in a dystopian future where single people are arrested and forced to find a mate in 45 days. If they don’t find one they can either be transformed into an animal of their choosing or get released into the woods. Movie: The Assassin Genre: Action Country: China Director: Hou Hsiao-Hsien Cast: Qi Shu, Chang Chen, Satoshi Tsumabuki, Ethan Ruan and Nikki Hsieh, with Ni Dahong, Zhang Shijun, Michael Chang, Jiang Wen, Zuo Xiaoqing Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s long-in-the-making ‘The Assassin’ may finally be ready. It is no secret that he is a master of his art. Of the ten films that Hsiao-Hsien Hou directed between 1980 and 1989, seven received best film or best director awards from prestigious international films festivals in Ven-

ice, Berlin, Hawaii, and the Festival of the Three Continents in Nantes. In a 1988 worldwide critics’ poll, Hou was championed as ‘one of the three directors most crucial to the future of cinema.’ In ‘The Assassin’, a project long in gestation, with initial scenes filming as way back as 2010, production on Hou Hsiao-Hsien casts his usual muse Shu Qi. Based on a short story, this about a female assassin during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 A.D.) who begins to question her loyalties. Movie: Black Mass Genre: Action/Thriller Country: The United States of America Director: Scott Cooper Cast: Dakota Johnson, Sienna Miller, Johnny Depp, Benedict Cumberbatch, Juno Temple, Kevin Bacon and Joel Edgerton If big names and star power is what catches your fancy then “Black Mass” should be on your books for the one to look out for. From the Unites States, Scott Cooper’s ‘Black Mass’ is an action thriller that tells the true story of Whitey Bulger; the brother of a state senator and the most infamous violent criminal in the history of South Boston. Following a string of violent actions, he became an FBI informant for 30 years in order to take down a Mafia family invading his turf. Movie: Love in Khon Kaen Genre: Drama Country: Thailand Director: Apichatpong Weerasethakul Cast: Banlop Lomnoi, Jenjira Pongpas A previous Palme d’Or winner, Thailand’s Apichatpong Weerasethakul will showcase ‘Love in Khon Kaen’, which is going to focus a lonesome middle-age housewife who tends a soldier with sleeping sickness and falls into a hallucination that triggers strange dreams, phantoms, and romance. The 44 year old has achieved milestones while working outside the strict confines of the Thai film studio system, Weerasethakul has directed several features and dozens of short films. Themes reflected in his films, and frequently discussed in interviews, include dreams, nature and sexuality, including touching upon his own homosexuality. Cinema cognoscenti appreciate his atypical narratives, placing titles/credits inbetween the film and working with non actors. Movie: Bombay Velvet Genre: Drama Country: India Director: Anurag Kashyap Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, and Kay Kay Menon Indian Director Anurag Kashyap, who Cannes claimed as it’s own discovery, could also be in town with his Fox Star Studios-backed ‘Bombay Velvet’, a very-big budget 1960s noir with mainstream and critically acclaimed Indian actors Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, and Kay Kay Menon among the huge cast. Anurag has already directed Gangs of Wassseypur, a 6 hour drama that premiered in the Directors Fortnight and has received the Order of Arts and Letters from French Culture Minister Aurelie Filippetti. His former Assistant Vasant Bala’s work , ‘Peddlers’ has also been featured in the Critics Week before. Along with all of this, he contributed a segment to omnibus film ‘Bombay Talkies’ which pays homage to 100 years of Indian Cinema and gets a special gala screening at the fest. It is safe to say that he may well be the unofficial ambassador of Indian Films at Cannes.

THE SKY IS NO LONGER THE LIMIT WITH THE OMEGA SPEEDMASTER SKYWALKER X-33 SOLAR IMPULSE LIMITED EDITION W ri t t e n b y An d r e w M c N a i r

t’s not the first time Omega have latched themselves onto an extreme pioneering venture. James Bond is their most notable ally, the Special Boat Service amongst others. The high class watch specialists love to team up with organisations pushing the boundaries of human capabilities, they’ve been strongly linked with NASA for over half a century. You may even forget that their main commerce is watch making. You’ll see adverts of men in ski-wear dangling out of helicopters, with a limited edition Omega timepiece poking out from under their bomber jackets. When Omega collaborated with the SBS they made just 500 watches for sale only to members of the British Special Forces, with the SBS logo and ‘By Strength and Guile’ engraved on the back. They retailed at £2,500, though one man walked into a jeweller to get it valued and had £10,000 cash set in front of him there and then. It was the same timepiece Daniel Craig wore in Casino Royale. Now Omega have turned eco-friendly, but they still retain their thrill seeking and inspirational spirit for Omegas new creation, the Solar Impulse. It’s the world’s first long-range solar powered airplane tasked with circling the globe on one trip, without a drop of fuel. Pretty cool eh? Not only does this quite possibly mark the future of air travel, it’s Omega’s way of keeping the Speedmaster family up to date on space exploration. THE SNOBBY RUN W AY M AGAZI NE

The watch is as pioneering and clean as the mission. The Speedmaster Skywalker X-33 Solar Impulse Limited Edition. It’s powered by the multi-quartz chronograph movement and, made from grade-two titanium, is as light as the laces in your shoes. It’s tested and qualified by the European Space Agency, with the words ‘Around the World’ engraved on the back, just to remind you where it came from. It doesn’t look like something you’d see on a millionaire businessman’s wrist though, more a subtle admission of wealth by a casually dressed movie star, or a Red Bull sponsored sky diver. Either way, it’s something you want. Running it through your hands gives you a feel for its quality, the coldness of the brushed titanium casing and the texture of the polyamide NATO strap sends chills down your spine. - WATCH REVIEW Nova, which emits green light, point out hours and minutes with class and style. Press down on the crown and the black face reveals digital displays similar to that on a dashboard computer. Add that to the three different time zones, a perpetual calendar, countdown functions, year and week indications, three alarms, and all grey numerals omitted from the black background. It’s Mission Elapsed Time (MEP) and Phase Elapsed Time (PET) give you a sense of what the watch was really designed for. So if you’re a fighter pilot, you’re well informed, and if you’re the CEO of an ad agency, you’re reminded of the designated function of the timepiece you use to track your lunch hour. Turn it over, and you can bask in it’s endorsements. Engraved are the words ‘Around the World’, symbolising the celebration of the Solar Impulse mission, and “Tested and Qualified by ESA” (the European Space Agency), circled around the indented Speedmaster logo. Omega says this is to ‘affirm its reliability, precision and ability to withstand challenging environments.’

Really I think it’s just to remind the holder of the time a precision that went into making the X-33, having it tested and developed under an ESA patent licence. I’m ok with that. Spend this much on a watch, and you want it to make you feel special. It’s priced at around £3000 which, considering the technology and precision that has gone into developing this new generation Speedmaster’s, isn’t bad. It would probably be a lot more from many other watch brands. With a choice of bracelet materials and bezel ring colours, you can tailor the timepiece for the occasion you wish to be seen wearing it. If you’re concerned with the specification and technologies it offers, they’re all there. If you’re standing in awe of a creation designed for space exploration and the way it makes you feel when you’ve got it strapped to your wrist, there’s little other choice. The spirit for adventure lives in all of us, and we’d all love to be the one’s embarking on an extreme trip into the unknown. However, for the time being we can’t all get into outer space but, for now, we can certainly strap a little memento to our forearm. Wouldn’t you agree?

SUMME R FI TN E SS International women’s rugby player Claire McLaughlin gives us her tips for getting in shape in time for summer. by Andrew McNair & Claire McLaughlin

It’s now well into 2015 and only a couple of months before you need to be on the beach turning heads so we’ve called upon International women’s rugby player Claire McLaughlin to give us a workout plan that strips fat, builds muscle and still leaves you looking feminine in time for summer. But let’s be clear, it’s not enough to go on a diet and be skinny.

Triple A Workouts: Accessing all areas of your body is a great way to streamline your exercise, boost recovery time and multiply your progress. The best goal to have when taking the step to train for the summer is to have a balanced muscular mass. No use having a flat stomach from all those crunches if your arms or legs look like they haven’t seen a gym in years. So let’s start with a full body workout. Not only does this allow your muscles to develop in sync, but also boosts testosterone levels and despite the negative connotations synonymous with this word, is pretty essential even for females. Thirdly, a full body workout needs time. Many people don’t progress because their body’s simply aren’t allowed to recover from their previous workout. If you’re doing one muscle group at a time you’ll need to be training five times a week so try training you’re whole body three times a week. Monday, Wednesday and Friday give you ample time for your body to recover in between, without neglecting any muscle groups.

Variety: Like most things, your body gets used to something if you keep doing it. This will cause a plateau, a speed bump in your progression where you’re body simply doesn’t react the same to the paces you’re putting it through. Surprise your muscles by making a few changes every month. Most PT’s will recommend changing your workout routine every 4-6 weeks. These don’t have to be monumental. If one of your exercises is push-ups, change them to sideto-side push-ups, or add a clap for a more explosive motion. Try this circuit routine three times a week for the next six weeks, and then switch it up. We’ll give you another in the next issue. And remember, if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.

Warm Up: 5 Minutes Rowing/Cycling (Moderate Intensity)

Compound Exercises:

Circuit 1- 3 Rounds:

These are exercises that incorporate more than one muscle group. By recruiting more muscles, you create a higher energy demand forcing your body to burn more calories, and thus raising your heart rate. They also use your core muscles, as they require balance. Deep squats for example work your entire core to keep you upright, as well as your legs and bum. Try tightening up your abs while you’re doing them for a greater effect. This is actually the best way to get a toned waist and the round bum like you’ve always wanted. And again, it saves time.

10 Squat Jumps 10 Glute Raises 3 Pull Ups 5 Single Leg Romanian Deadlifts (Each Leg) 8 T-Press Ups 20 Plank Shoulder Taps 1 Minute Wall Sit

Circuit Training: Big point coming up; you want to be burning fat AND toning your muscles. Circuit training allows you to exert muscular force, doing exercises like press ups, squats and so on, whilst raising your heart rate and burning off the excess fat. Again, when time is tight, cut out your cardio workouts by doing intense muscular circuit training three times a week to whip your body into shape. This technique will allow you to have fast, explosive workouts that take next to no time to complete. You’ll see a theme appearing here. Get on with your life, by getting in and out of the gym in 45 minutes.

THE SNOBBY RUNW AY M AGAZI NE

Circuit 2- 3 Rounds: 10 Burpees 5 Forward Lunges (Each Leg) 10 Tricep Dips 10 Push Ups 5 Bulgarian Split Squat Each Leg 20 Cross Body Mountain Climber 90 Second Wall Sit

Claire McLaughlin is from Northern Ireland and plays rugby for Ulster Women.

SEGERA HOUSE Kenya’s Most Luxurious Safari Retreat Written by Danielle Hammond

S

egera House Retreat in Kenya is nestled away in the heart of a wildlife sanctuary on the Laikipia Plateau. The 20,000 hectare private wildlife sanctuary, situated at the foot of Mount Kenya, is home to a vast array of botanical life and it is not uncommon to see elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, monkeys, cheetahs and giraffes during your stay. The Segera retreat’s philosophy focuses on their four C’s; conservation, community, culture and commerce. It is caref ully designed to inspire your soul and your senses. This is where luxury, art, socialising and simplicity form a new signature style, Segera Style. Segera offers a uniquely revitalising experience in a setting like no other. It offers everything from a wellness centre to the world’s largest collection of African art. The resort encompasses six timber and thatched private villas raised above an oasis of plant life. Each villa sleeps up to four guests and offers a balcony overlooking the Savannah. The balconies come complete with swinging beds, creating the perfect setting to watch the sun go down and maybe even catch a shooting star fly past while you marvel at the sounds of the Savannah.

The Segera House and Segera Villa offer superior luxury with views over the Laikipa Plateau and onwards to the spectacular Mount Kenya. The understated elegance and authenticity has been created through the help of South African based designer, LIFE Interior Design. This sophisticated but stylish retreat uses a minimalistic approach, creating the feeling of a privately owned villa. The eclectic arrays of buildings at the resort are bound together through natural materials and curved structures. The traditional Kenyan farmhouse marries perfectly with the new Wine Cellar Tower, cooled by solar energy and a rainwater tank, an architectural example of the four C’s philosophy. The interior design style links the natural and raw materials together perfectly, forming a paradise of colours with the modern African art inside and speaking to the botanical oasis outside. Each material tells a story with weathered wood and smoothed stone. Segera House is a stone clad luxury house sleeping a maximum of four people. Segera Villa is a romantic retreat for two consisting of two wooden buildings connected by a bridge.

Once the big day is done and dusted, newlyweds start their new lives with a few weeks away. We’ve chosen five of the best destinations to head to for your honeymoon.

St Lucia: After the stress of planning your big day, unwind and soak up the sun on the beautiful island of St. Lucia. Sugar Beach is the perfect location for lovebirds to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Book into a luxury beachfront hotel and wake up to the sight of the Caribbean sea. It’s a one of a kind way to begin your new lives together. If you and your partner are interested in water sports, then St Lucia is the place for you. Sugar Beach has its own dive centre, so indulge in windsurfing, kayaking or snorkelling. A trip to the beautiful island of St. Lucia would not be complete without a trek up the Piton Mountains, the best way to see the island in all of its glory. Napa Valley & Sonoma: The world famous wine country of Napa Valley and Sonoma is the perfect stop for a rustic honeymoon. Located in California, you can almost guarantee good weather all year round. It’s no wonder Napa Valley is the most visited attraction in the state after Disneyland. But, with over 400 wineries, you will have plenty to chose from, especially if you are looking to beat the crowd for something a bit more

cosy and romantic. Grab a bicycle and cycle along the stretches of wineries and take in your surroundings. Or relax by getting couples massages at one of the many spas. If you find you cannot relax any longer, Napa Valley has plenty of shops to keep you occupied - from vintage boutiques, to one of a kind jewellery. Buenos Aires: If you and your partner are after a trip filled with culture, look no further than the Argentinian capital of Buenos Aires. The bright city is jam packed with things to do, such as the Cementerio de la Recoleta. A visit to a cemetery may seem morbid, but the stunning architecture is a must see in the city. Stroll around the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, taking in the outstanding art that dates back to the early sixteenth century. A visit to Buenos Aires wouldn’t be complete without a tango experience; if you’re not comfortable enough to dance yourself, you can attend a dinner and a show. Be sure to test your tastebuds with some local cuisine; try a ‘lomito’ - a slice of beef, similar to filet minion, served with tomato and lettuce on bread. And for a real treat, be sure to try the world famous dulce de leche!

Offering a unique experience unlike any other in Paris, the serviced residence seamlessly marries Parisian elegance in a 19th century Haussmannian apartment building with the postmodernist style of celebrated architect Ricardo Bofill in an adjoining hotel, offering expansive interior and flawless architectural lines. We have fallen in love with it’s interior, designed by the award-winning, UK based architectural firm Buckley Gray Yeoman, the interior décor uses lavish materials and fittings. In the building designed by Ricardo Bofill, the contemporary style includes a mixture of textures such as sycamore wood with Carrara bathrooms. Pillows, chairs and other furniture feature fabrics by well-known French design house Pierre Frey. In the Haussman style building, the décor is more Parisian with Hungarian-point parquet floors, light oak, mosaics and elaborate cornices that lend a classy yet cosy air to the apartments. Timeless and inviting, the interior has been designed with residents’ comfort in mind. We think the interior and ambiance gives a feeling of relaxation and well-being in an elegant VIP setting located in the heart of Paris that includes comfortable lounges, a 400-sqm gymnasium and two Turkish baths. n recent years, Asian restaurants have become more and more celebrated for their incredible cuisine. Michelin stars have been awarded to some of the most outstanding restaurants on the continent, and we are here to bring you the five best restaurants to visit in Asia. by Laura Hamill

In 2012, Hong Kong based restaurant L’Atelier de Joël Roubouchon received the accolade of the Michelin star again. The restaurant has been open since 2006, and is based on the concept that Roubouchon created in Tokyo. The restaurant itself is divided into two areas, L’Atelier and Le Jardin. L’Atelier was listed as the top choice in Asia’s Top 20 restaurants in the Miele Guide. Watch your food being prepared in the

open kitchen, and go for the menu decouverte (the discovery menu). The wide range of exquisite food on offer is sure to suit everyone. Indulge in caviar, pan fried foie gras and pan seared Japanese A3 Waygu beef. Hailed as ‘X-treme Chinese Cuisine’, Bo Innovation was granted a Michelin star in 2014. Chef Alvin Leung Jr. is a visionary, looking to recreate tra-

ditional Chinese food in an artistic way. Leung Jr. wants to challenge his diners, “to surprise and excite them” - and he is doing just that. Leung Jr.’s meals are mind blowing, and his style of cooking is adored all over the world. Be sure to eat from the Chef’s Table menu which includes a feast of cured salmon with coffee, ox tongue and lobster. A meal at Bo Innovation will not be one you

will forget in a hurry and if you are lucky enough, you may even see Alvin doing his thing in the kitchen. 8 1/2 Otto e Mezzo in Hong Kong has been open since 2010 and is the brain child of the ‘best Italian chef in Asia’, Umberto Bombana. The name of the establishment itself is a nod to the autobiographical film of Federico Fellini - linking back to the Italian culture

restaurant is more than just a meal, it is truly an experience. Be sure to try the Chestnut soup on offer.

and heritage that inspires Bombana’s culinary creations. 8 1/2 Otto e Mezzo is the first and only Italian restaurant outside of Italy to be awarded three Michelin stars - if that does not tell you how amazing the food is, nothing else will. Enjoy your meal whilst overlooking the hustle and bustle of Chater Road and be sure to try the black truffle taglialini as you embrace authentic Italian cuisine from the other side of the world. They also have a restaurant in Shanghai.

Our final recipient of three Michelin stars in Asia is Nakamura. This delightful little eatery is located in Kyoto, and is a prime example of kaiseki meals. This type of cuisine seeks to utilise the freshest ingredients that are in season, and prepare them in such a way that emphasises their flavour. Unfortunately, we cannot suggest anything to taste, as there is no menu. Should you have any dietary requirements, inform your servers and await to see what the chef conjures up. The beauty of this is no two experiences will be the same.

In case you didn’t know, Tokyo has the most Michelin starred restaurants in the World. So, it is only right that we include an exquisite restaurant situated in the Japanese capital. If fish takes your fancy, then you must try Esaki. The decor of the restaurant may be understated, but all of the passion pours out of the food that is in front of you. Aside from the seafood, the presentation of the vegetables is unlike anything you have seen before. Eating at Esaki

End your meal by indulging in mango sorbet to clear your palette. In April 2015, the Ithaa Undersea Restaurant will be celebrating their ten year anniversary. The stunning, one of a kind eatery opened its doors in 2005, having postponed its opening due to the tragic tsunami in Thailand the year before. Due to the placement of the restaurant, and the fact it is located in such extreme conditions, it is estimated that it can only withstand twenty years under water. So, now is the perfect time to book a trip to the Maldives and celebrate ten years of an innovative, unique and beautifully built restaurant. The restaurant can be reserved privately for breakfast, or for special occasions such as weddings and birthdays.

SW IS S C HO COLATE FROM THE SWISS CHOCOLATE MASTER’S CONFECTIONER OF THE YEAR, GERALDINE MULLER MARAS

The chocolate industry is one of the biggest in the world, estimated to be worth an incredible $110bn per year. It is no surprise that chocolate is consumed in such large quantities around the world, but it is so much more than bars and truffles.

C

hocolate is so versatile that it can be crafted into little pieces of art. With the presentation being just as important as the taste. Switzerland, arguably the chocolate capital of the world, has been detrimental in making chocolate what it is today thanks to centuries of perfecting this fine art. The most recent winner of the prominent ‘Confectioner of the Year’ award at the Swiss Chocolate Masters Championship is Geraldine Muller Maras. Swiss Chocolate Masters tests the creative ability and technical skills of the chocolatiers, and Geraldine Muller Maras is an entirely deserved winner of this accolade. Muller Maras is the director of Nestle’s Atelier du Chocolat Maison Cailler, and is one of the best in the world. The work she has created at Maison Cailler is like no other. The chocolate uses the best ingredients to create a truly enjoyable experience. Maison Cailler has almost anything your heart could desire when it comes to chocolate. From their exquisite Les Recettes de L’Atelier range, which combines fruit, hazelnuts and almonds in the finest chocolate, to their irresistible Cuisine range, featuring dark, milk and white chocolate bars.

Geraldine Muller Maras’s work is so highly respected, that she will be competing with the world’s best at the World Chocolate Master’s in October, in Paris. In this competition, her skills and creativity will be tested once again. This will include creating an artistic piece in chocolate which has a maximum height of 180cm, without the use of internal support, and uses all the techniques with chocolate. The creativity of the work is only a mere part of the judging process. The difficulty, and the techniques used will only gain up to 30% of the overall mark. Another 40% is awarded through a taste test - taking into account how tastes are combined as well as the structures of the sweet made. The final 30% can be gained through the general impression the chocolatiers give to the judges - through the likes of cleanliness and the presentation of their final table. So this Easter, indulge in some high end, beautifully crafted Atelier du Chocolat Maison Cailler and embrace the hard work and dedication the best Swiss Chocolate Confectioner, Geraldine Muller Maras has to offer. It will not disappoint.
