WELCOME TO THE EVENT
ello and welcome to The Event at Rebecca Farm! We are excited to be celebrating our 22nd year hosting an array of competitors, coaches, grooms, officials, owners, spectators, volunteers, and eventing enthusiasts from all over the country as well as across the pond. We wish all the horses, competitors, and support teams a very safe and uneventful journey!
This year we are introducing two new levels to the competition that riders have been requesting, Beginner Novice and Modified. In addition, we will have the upper-level FEI CCI2*, CCI3* and CCI4* divisions, preparing riders for the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. Our world-class venue offers extraordinary footing, course designs by Ian Stark, and challenges that every eventer dreams of completing. Our farm crew and builders have been working tirelessly to ensure the absolute best for every horse and rider out of the start box.
Spectators are welcome to truly explore and enjoy the hundreds of acres designated to the sport: have a picnic by Lake Jerome or wander through the food court and vendor stalls in hopes of finding treasures and treats. You might even get to meet a rider from Team USA, Team Canada or Team Puerto Rico and snag an autograph along the way! Hats, sunscreen, water bottles and light weight chairs are a must! We have filtered water stations set up to serve you and your four-legged friends on leashes.
Each year, Montana Equestrian Events, Inc., and The Event at Rebecca Farm raise funds for our charitable initiative, Halt Cancer at X. Thanks to generous donations, we have gifted national research projects in the battle to find a cure along with Flathead community educational outreach programs for breast cancer survivors and their families. We have raised over $935,000 and with your help expect to exceed $1 million in 2023!
The Event at Rebecca Farm is the heart and soul of family, friends, volunteers, and our dedicated staff. It is a family effort, enhanced by all our committed volunteers, longtime friends, and vested staff members.
We thank each and every one of you for joining in our favorite week of the year.
Kick on and have a safe ride!

A SPECTATOR'S GUIDE TO EVENTING
HORSE-AND-RIDER COMBOS COMPLETE THE ULTIMATE TEST
By: Stacey Nedrow-Wigmore
venting, considered the triathlon of equestrian competition, proves the athleticism and partnership of horses and riders. Competitors must complete three distinct phases, with scores in each phase combining for the final placings. Whether you seek the harmony and grace of dressage, the stamina and bravery of crosscountry, or the precision and agility of stadium jumping, the sport has something for every spectator to enjoy.
34 THE EVENT AT REBECCA FARM 2023
CROSS- COUNTRY
The ultimate test of stamina, bravery, and partnership between horse and rider, the cross-country phase is exciting for competitors and spectators.
WHAT YOU WILL SEE THROUGHOUT THE EVENT AT REBECCA FARM
THE THREE PHASES
Dressage: This French word actually means “training.” As the first of three tests, dressage is meant to show that the horse can be obedient and the horseandrider pair harmonious. It is ridden in an arena with low sides and letters around the perimeter. Competitors perform the test from memory (different levels have different tests), executing certain movements at the different letters indicated. It’s a bit like the compulsory figures in figure skating. A great dressage test should be graceful and quiet—in other words, the horse should look as though he is performing without input from the rider. The judge or judging panel looks for obedience, lightness, and “acceptance of the bridle,” which means that the horse is steady in his head and body carriage and connected to the rider through the seat, legs, and reins. A fussy horse, or one that spooks, speeds up, or otherwise looks unhappy will get a lower score on the movements.
Cross-Country: This second phase is the most exciting and demanding of the three phases, and the one many spectators enjoy the most. Horses
emerge from the start box and gallop across over undulating terrain, with 24 to 36 solid obstacles, within the time allowed—again, this is specified by level. This is the ultimate test of the horse’s fitness, stamina, and bravery. The rider’s knowledge of pace and of his or her horse’s specific strengths and weaknesses also factor in. Cross-country obstacles include wide tables, water jumps, ditches, up- and down-banks, and many more. The natural terrain also plays a role, and a cross-country course designer takes the hills and valleys of the course into consideration when placing jumps. The obstacles are flagged—white on the left and red on the right. Horse and rider must jump between them, though knocking down a flag does not incur any penalties as long as the horse’s shoulder is inside the flags.
Show Jumping: Also referred to as the jumping test, this phase features 12 to 15 obstacles in an arena. Unlike the fences in the cross-country phase, the jumps are constructed from rails that come down when hit. As in the cross-country phase, the jumps are flagged, and each jump is numbered in the order it’s to be jumped.
A FEW FACTS ABOUT EVENTING
Riders compete the same horse throughout the event. It’s also one of the few sports where men and women compete against each other. And as far as age—well, most riders get better as they get older, so it’s not unusual to see high-level competitors in their 50s.

DRESSAGE
Riders must start after the judge blows the whistle (or rings a bell), and time starts once the horse goes through the timers. The aim of the show jumping phase is to leave all of the jump rails up while completing the course within the time limit. Horses must be both precise and agile, which may be particularly difficult after the rigors of complet - ing cross-country the previous day.
At the end of the three phases, the penalties are calculated, and the rider with lowest score—lowest number of penalties—is declared the winner of their division.
A CONCISE HISTORY
Originally called “military” (militaire, as it was called in French), eventing has its roots in training for the battlefield. The International Equestrian Federation (FEI), which governs the discipline at its highest levels, states that “eventing
originated as a military competition that tested officers and horses in challenges that could occur on- or off-duty. It also provided a basis to compare training standards between the cavalries of different countries.”
Eventing first appeared as an Olympic event in 1912 in Stockholm, Sweden, and was considered the complete test of a young army officer’s charge. Horses and riders completed five tests that included endurance (roads and tracks), cross-country, steeplechase (speed), jumping, and dressage. The endurance and cross-country phases took place over approximately 34 miles and had a total time limit of four hours! The steeplechase included 10 obstacles over a two-mile course. The jumping portion required 15 obstacles that measured more than four feet high with a maximum spread of nearly 10 feet. Riders competed for both team and individual medals and only

commissioned officers could compete until after World War II.
With various changes in format, eventing has been included in nearly all Olympic Games since then, save during the World Wars. As mounted troops gave way to tanks during World War II, Olympic eventing also saw a change in its team compositions. The 1952 Olympics in Helsinki, Finland, brought the first civilian competitors. The first female Olympic eventer competed in 1964. The sport remained fairly unchanged until 2004, when a new format was introduced. Sometimes called the “short format,” this new system removed the endurance and speed phases, leaving only dressage, cross-country, and show jumping. The change was a compromise that made the sport more television-friendly and took
SCORING
up less land and resources—a necessity to keep the sport in the Olympic line-up.
THE SPORT TODAY
The Event at Rebecca Farm offers competitors and spectators alike the opportunity to see both the “classic” eventing format, which, on endurance day, includes roads and tracks, steeplechase, and cross-country, and the modern short format that is part of the international competition landscape.
Over the five days of competition, there are divisions that range from beginner novice through CCI**** (Concours Complet International four star), which showcases some of the most talented horses and riders competing at the top of the sport internationally.
Dressage: Each dressage test movement receives a score on a scale from 0, meaning “not performed,” to 10, meaning “excellent.” The total score is then converted into “penalties.” So, the higher the score, the lower the penalties assigned. These penalties carry forward through the other phases, which is why the dressage phase is so important to the end result.
Cross-Country: Penalties are incurred when a horse stops in front of a jump, runs beyond it without jumping, or jumps outside of the flags. Time penalties are added for going over the time allowed or even coming in too fast. The term “double clear” means that the horse incurred no jumping or time penalties. Any penalties are added to those from the dressage. Multiple refusals or the fall of horse or rider are grounds for elimination.
Show Jumping: Refusals, knockdowns, and exceeding the time allowed incur penalties, which are added to those from dressage and cross-country.

CLASSIC COMPETITION
The Event at Rebecca Farm is one of only a handful of competitions to host a “classic” event. Sometimes called a “three-day” or “long format,” it includes dressage on day one, endurance on day two, and stadium on day three. Endurance has four phases: A and C are roads and tracks, B is steeplechase, and D is cross-country obstacles. Rebecca Farm offers the three-day at the novice and training levels.
The classic event is the ultimate test of horseand- rider fitness. During phases A and C (roads and tracks), riders trot through marked gates over several kilometers, warming
SPECTATOR SAFETY & COMFORT
Eventing is a fun sport for competitors and spectators alike! Particularly on cross-country day, we encourage you to go out on the course to watch. Feel free to move around the grounds throughout the day to see all the obstacles being negotiated. Because of the nature of the event, there are a few considerations to keep in mind for everyone’s safety:
Enjoy walking the course but keep a “heads up” attitude.
Horses always have the right of way.
Stay behind any marked barriers or ropes, and cross only where allowed.
Look both ways and listen for warning whistles before crossing the course.
Be aware of galloping or loose horses.
Stay out of pathways and away from obstacles.
Remember that courses change throughout the day without much warning, so what was safe one minute can be dangerous the next.
Supervise children at all times, and keep pets on a short leash.
up their horses and pacing them to meet an optimum time. After phase A, riders continue to phase B, the steeplechase. This is made up of several brush fences set on an oval track. These are taken at speed, and horses are encouraged to jump through the brush rather than over it. After steeplechase, the riders bring the horses back to the trot for phase C, which is like phase A, only longer and slower and meant to help cool down the horse.
After phase C, the rider brings the horse to the “10-minute box” for veterinary inspection and cooling out before moving on to cross-country. After the rider dismounts, the vet will check the horse’s temperature; pulse; and respiration, which is when proper conditioning, preparation, and a good team on the ground are proven. Provided the horse has recovered sufficiently, the rider will get back on and continue to phase D, the cross-country.

A SPECTATOR'S GUIDE TO EVENTING
SOUNDNESS
The horse’s physical conditioning and soundness is a critical part of eventing competition. The day prior to dressage, a ground jury and the show veterinarian inspect all horses competing at the FEI (international) levels. As the riders jog them in-hand on a firm surface, the judges watch for any signs of lameness. “The jog” is open to spectators, and horses and riders are turned out to the nines with horses braided and coats polished.
A second jog takes place the morning prior to the show jumping phase and follows the same format. This jog is perhaps more critical because it comes after the rigors of crosscountry day. It showcases horses’ fitness, as well as the horsemanship skills of riders and grooms who spend hours the night before icing legs and providing drug-free treatments to help the horse feel good and pain-free in the final phase.

killed chef, Les Simon, has a passion for all things culinary and has brought his extraordinary talent to Rebecca Farm where he’s been an integral member of the Organizing Team for nearly twenty years.
Planning and executing many delicious, multicourse meals, for an unknown number of guests, at multiple locations, over five days, is a daunting task, and yet, year after year, Les has managed to pull it off, seemingly without a hitch, and always with his characteristic grin!
Les grew up in Merrick, New York (Long Island) and found his calling early, attending culinary school not long after graduating from high school. Life then took him out west, first to Colorado, and then in the early 80’s to Montana where he and his wife raised two children. Les opened Rocco’s restaurant in Kalispell in the late 80’s and operated it into the late 90’s, simultaneously teaching culinary classes at Flathead Valley Community College.
In 2003, Les met and married his second wife Beth, who happened to be a gifted baker. Together they opened the very successful Simply Sweet Baking Co. in Kalispell and started working The Event with then Chef, Mark Hogan. In 2008, Les and Beth relocated to Portland, Oregon where Les worked for Whole Foods. Every July, they travelled back to be a part of the catering team for The Event. They moved back to Montana permanently in 2015 to be closer to their family. At that time, Les began working as a chef for the Broussard family and also took on responsibility for the culinary duties for The Event at Rebecca Farm.
"LES" SIMON
In his distinguished career as a personal chef, Les has designed inviting menus combining highest quality ingredients and distinctive flavors with creativity and skill, keeping in mind the tastes of the guests he is cooking for. He has brought that same commitment and passion for food, as well as the ability to have fun with it, to Rebecca Farm. At The Event, Les celebrates the food traditions of the Broussards’ Louisiana heritage and the outdoor grilling tastes of the West.
Les is not able to do all of this work alone, and the talented, energetic and friendly team he has assembled to fulfill the catering responsibilities are a testament to his personality and leadership style. Together this wonderful team provides the gracious Montana hospitality and excellent cuisine that The Event is noted for.
We’re not sure what we’d do without Les, though we’ll soon learn, as this is his last year as Catering Coordinator for The Event. This means we will also be saying goodbye to Beth Simon, who has worked alongside Les all of these years, providing us with delicious breakfast pastries and mouthwatering desserts.
Happily for us, Les has hand-picked his replacement who is training alongside him this year, but his are big shoes to fill.
Les, we thank you for bringing your extraordinary talents to Rebecca Farm, for being our dear friend and for taking such good care of us for all these years. (Even the Broussard canines will miss you!) We wish you and Beth many wonderful years of retirement, enjoying all of the things that you love here in Montana with your children and grandchildren!

THE TIME IS NOW.
BY LINDSAY BROCK
hen then 17-year-old Maggie Kehring came forward to tell her story – one where a former Olympian and FEI World Cup™ champion had groomed and sexually assaulted her – the horse sport industry could no longer hide from the severity and reality of their problem. For Maggie’s mother, Carrie Kehring, it was a problem that could easily have been the catalyst to her losing her daughter altogether. And she almost did.
Athletes are often unaware that their relationship with a coach or mentor has gradually become unhealthy, until it is too late. Promises of success from someone proven to be at the top of their sport create an imbalance of power ripe for producing misconduct that exists under the radar of family, friends, and the average bystander.
Abuse is more prevalent in sports where participants are predominantly female and working one-on-one with a trainer— as is the norm in horse sports. The fact that equestrian athletes most often compete as individuals, not as teammates, increases their risk still more—and that risk only grows as they advance.
Reports of sexual misconduct in horse sport have poured out in recent years, providing undeniable proof that the industry is failing its youth. When former
USA gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar’s crippling pattern of abuse against the gymnasts under his care was revealed, one of his victims told a courtroom that “over 100 victims could have been spared the abuse. All we needed was one adult to do the right thing.”
Carrie Kehring has come forward to be that one adult for the equestrian world. As countless mothers, daughters, fathers, and sons shared stories of their own experiences of sexual assault within the equestrian industry and beyond, an inspired idea was born. She called it #WeRideTogether.
52 THE EVENT AT REBECCA FARM 2023
“Let me clarify one important misconception about #WeRideTogether." said Carrie. "It has nothing to do with SafeSport, prosecution, or the perceived witch hunt for perpetrators."
The ultimate goal of #WeRideTogether is to remove the survivor stigma, help people feel heard and understood, and significantly reduce "if not eliminate" sexual misconduct in all sports through educational tools, resources, and a safe platform for survivors to share their stories. It’s a lofty aspiration that Carrie Kehring feels the organization is primed to accomplish.
“We want to prevent trainers and coaches from becoming fallen heroes, we want to give survivors a safe platform to share their voices, and we want to diminish the stigma and fear that seem to be so crippling for those who want to come forward.”

like this which aren’t able to get resources from traditional government funding sources.”
Halt Cancer at X, the charitable initiative of Montana Equestrian Events, Inc., recently awarded a $50,000 research grant to Dr. Benjamin Spike PhD and Ms. Brooke Gates, PhD candidate at the University of Utah. The team, working at Huntsman Cancer Institute, plans to utilize the funding to support their work on MCAM-mediated cell state control in normal breast functioning and malignant transformation.
MCAM is cell adhesion molecule that is believed to be useful in early breast cell development. In their proposal, the research team seeks to better define MCAM’s role in breast development, delineate the cell states it governs, and determine if it is likely to be involved in breast tumorigenesis and therapy resistance. The overall goal is to develop targeted breast cancer therapeutics to directly impact patient outcomes.
“We’re thrilled to be able to support scientists like Dr. Spike and Ms. Gates in their work,” says Halt Cancer at X founder, Sarah Broussard. “We believe there is a way to beat breast cancer and that it will be discovered by funding early-stage projects
“The structure of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for research grants favors more mature projects with significant data to back up their hypothesis,” explains Dr, Melissa Kaptanian, of Logan Health Breast Center, who chairs the Halt Cancer Grant Committee. “That’s where Halt Cancer at X can come in. The funding of early stage and creative proposals such as this one, allows promising scientists to gather the preliminary data they need to explore novel ideas that can act as the foundations for future NIH grants.”
Contributions for Halt Cancer at X are accepted year-round in the form of competitor pledges, auction proceeds, patron allocations and other donations. In 2022, the initiative received the largest amount of donations in its 11-year history. The cumulative total of the research and community grants that have been awarded is now nearly $940,000.

KATHLEEN ANN " KATSY” KEEL
Katsy Keel passed away peacefully at her home in Marietta, Georgia, in the presence of her loving family, in August of 2022 at the age of 87. The eldest of three children born to Tommye Maude and Jerome Anthony Broussard, Katsy is survived by younger brother Jerome Broussard. Her sister Nancy B. Edmundson preceded her in death in 2014.
Katsy will long be remembered as her family’s strong, yet gentle, matriarch. A loving sister, mother, grandmother of ten, great-grandmother of seven with eight nieces and nephews and many cousins, Katsy enjoyed precious time spent with her extended family. Some of that time was in the Flathead Valley every July, where she joined the Hospitality Team of The Event, making visitors feel welcome with her Southern hospitality and humor.
Katsy graduated from LSU Lafayette with a degree in mathematics, and later earned an MBA from KSU Kennesaw. She settled in Marietta where, while living a full and busy life as a mother, she taught for over twenty-five years at Sprayberry High School, where she is remembered as a gifted teacher, mentor and friend. After retiring, Katsy worked at H&R Block. She lived her life to the fullest and was an avid reader, gifted gardener, and enjoyed traveling. Katsy looked forward to regular lunches with her many close friends with whom she stayed in touch throughout her lifetime.
A devout Catholic, Katsy embodied the values of her faith. She was charitable, full of grace and kindness, and gave generously of her time to help those in need and to support church and community charities.
Katsy has been a treasured volunteer, family member and integral part of The Event at Rebecca Farm since its beginning. She will be forever missed.
MARTHA KAY BAILEY
Horseback riding and horse ownership brought Kay tremendous joy throughout her life. She began riding when she was a young girl in Florida, the state where she was born, spent her youth and attended the St. Vincent Hospital’s School of Nursing to earn her RN degree. After Kay met and married navy corpsman Jim Bailey in 1958, the couple was stationed in Guam, California, Colorado, Rhode Island, and then back in Florida where Kay worked for Pensacola Public Health and was a professor of nursing at Pensacola Junior College.
60 THE EVENT AT REBECCA FARM 2023
MEMORIUM
Later in life, Kay and Jim “retired” to Kalispell where they lived for over 20 years on their Sanctuary Farm. Kay loved the many outdoor activities that Montana offered, including hiking, snowshoeing, river rafting. She continued to ride and became part of the Back Country Horsemen of the Flathead. Through that organization, Kay became an enthusiastic and dedicated volunteer for The Event, returning year after year to work multiple days and shifts, always willing to help in any way that she could.
Kay passed away peacefully in her sleep in February at the age of 85. Her kind and generous spirit, and her devotion to family, friends and the causes she cared about, will be long remembered by those who knew her, including her friends here at Rebecca Farm.
JAMES "JIMMY" C. WOFFORD
The sport of eventing lost a strong advocate and a great horseman with the passing of James Wofford in February from cancer. His impact on the sport, through his years as a top rider, coach and participant in its governing bodies, is truly immeasurable.
Born in Kansas to an equestrian family, Jimmy grew up immersed in the sport. His father was on the U.S. Showjumping Team at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics and a founding member of the US Equestrian Team. His two brothers rode for the U.S. at the Olympics of ‘52 and ’56, respectively.
Jimmy himself had an impressive, nearly 30-year career in the sport of eventing. He joined the U.S Eventing Team in 1965 and was part of medal-winning teams at the 1968 and 1972 Olympic Games, going on to win an individual silver medal with Carawich at the 1980 alternative Olympics in Fontainebleau.
His other achievements included individual and team bronze at the 1970 and 1978 World Championships, team gold at the 1967 Pan American Games, and five U.S. National Championship titles. He also won the Kentucky Three Day Event twice, first in 1981 and again in 1986, coming out of retirement to do so. After retirement, Jimmy became a highly respected coach and mentor. His students have been members of the U.S. Olympic, World and Pan American Teams since 1978. He coached the Canadian eventing team for the 2002 World Championships, the 2003 Pan American Games and the 2004 Olympics. Wofford also maintained a life-long involvement in the governance of equestrian sport, serving with the American Horse Show Association, the USET, the US Combined Training Association, and the FEI Eventing Committee, including two years as vice-chair.
Truly an eventing legend, Jimmy Wofford was inducted into the USEA Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Culver Academies Horsemanship Hall of Fame. He was also awarded the Prestigious US Equestrian (USEF) Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. Jimmy is survived by his wife Gail, two daughters and four grandchildren, and will be revered and remembered by countless associates, students and friends.
