ervicing snowcats and other large grooming machines can be a frustrating, costly and time-consuming process for ski area operators. A New York-based company is providing those folks a lift, both figuratively and literally, while removing much of the muss and fuss from the repair and maintenance process. Lif-Tech Equipment introduced the Lif-Track lift in 1995, a first of its kind system designed specifically for servicing snowcats and other big snow grooming machines. The company has sold and installed more than a hundred Lif-Track systems since its introduction, and according to Lif-Tech product manager and co-founder Gary Pavlick, the reason why is simple: it makes the often challenging task of servicing big, bulky snow groomers much, much easier. “Think of how nasty it is to get under one of these machines. There’s no room to work, you can’t see, there’s snow dripping all over you. There’s a get in, get out mentality when you have to do maintenance,” Pavlick says. “Now (with Lif-Track) you have access, you have room to work and you can see (what you’re doing). Being able to see is the key to productivity and finding problems before they become really bad.” According to Pavlick, there is nothing else like it on the market. What really sets Lif-Track apart from other lifts, he says, is its versatility. A moveable platform with a textured rubber-belting surface can be adjusted to accommodate not only mas-

sive snow grooming vehicles but also everything from backhoes and front-end loaders to pickup trucks and ATVs. The system’s direct drive hydraulics can hold loads of up to 30,000 pounds in the standard model and up to 40,000 pounds in the BAM model and is designed to lift PistenBully, Prinoth and Tucker snow grooming vehicles. Pavlick says that means that instead of having to buy multiple lifts for its fleet of vehicles, a ski area needs only one to accommodate its various needs. “The No. 1 thing is that it works for all their vehicles because we have a moveable platform that adjusts. Pretty much all the vehicles that a ski area has you can do on this lift,” he says. “That (versatility) is really the key to making it a saleable product. Whether you’ve got a transit bus or a school bus, an ATV or pickup, we can lift them all because of the moveable platform.” One of the accessories included with the system are jack stands that can be placed underneath the chassis of a snowcat, which can then be lowered on the lift This allows a mechanic to do track work on the machine without having to untrack it. Pavlick says the Lif-Track can be installed in pretty much any kind of building. The only requirement is that it must have at least a 14- or 15-foot high ceiling to accommodate the system. Lif-Track technicians take care of the installation, which usually requires just one day to complete.

Pretty much all the vehicles that a ski area has you can do on this lift.” Cost Savings Lif-Track’s price point makes it an attractive option for smaller and medium-sized ski areas. The system typically costs between $40,000 and $42,000 to install, which might explain why about half of the lifts’ sales to date have been to smaller and mediumsized operations. “That’s the whole idea behind it. Our target was not … Vail and Aspen. Our target was to be able to sell to places like Labrador Mountain and Greek Peak, the small to medium-sized ski areas,” Pavlick says. “In order to do that it had to have a very affordable cost and it also had to have a lot of utility. It had to be able to take care of all their different vehicles.”

He maintains that Lif-Track can save an operation at least 500 man-hours per year and dramatically extend the life of its fleet of service vehicles. It can also drastically lower the cost of parts because mechanics can do more frequent inspections and diagnose problems early enough that they can repair, rather than replace, problem parts, Pavlick adds. The system itself is virtually maintenance-free. An avid ski enthusiast growing up in southern New York state, Pavlick had been toying with the idea of producing a lift designed specifically for snowcats ever since he and his brother founded Lif-Track in 1991. It was already producing lifts for tracks, buses and trains when he was approached by Bruce Wilson at New York’s Labrador Mountain ski resort who asked him about the idea of a lift for snowcats. “He said ‘Can you help me?’ I said I know exactly what you’re talking about because I had already kind of had it framed out in my head and I (knew) exactly what (he was) talking about in terms of a snowcat,” he recalls. “It presented two problems. One, they’re much, much wider than any typical vehicle on the road, by six or seven feet. Second, they present a very concentrated load on the platforms themselves. You’ve got all these tracks and tires, one tire right After the next. They’re taking all of that load of the machine and applying that on the track.” The Lif-Track system is relatively simple in its design. Direct-drive hydraulic cylinders, one in each of four columns, do the heavy lifting while a mechanical locking system locks the ladders in each column to ensure safety.

It’s operated by push-button controls and there are no lift chains. While Pavlick felt there was a need for something like the Lif-Track system, he admits he wasn’t initially sure how successful it might be. It took many months of travelling to trade shows across North America and countless demonstrations to convince groomers of the merit of the product. “From the trade show we tried to get people into the shops to see it. That

definitely helped us get the thing off the ground,” says Pavlick, whose company also does extensive consultation work with several ski hill operations. “We had to really work at it.” ❃

Rising to the Challenge Zach Mayo has a serious hearing impairment â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but that hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stopped him from realizing his dream of becoming a snowcat operator. By: Mark Halsall

ach Mayo has been grooming alpine ski runs at Canyons Resort just outside Park City, Utah for the past five years. Currently a Level II snowcat operator, Zach is passionate about his work and is clearly on the ascent – in his boss’s words, he’s “well on his way to becoming an expert operator.” Zach was also born deaf. The cochlear implant he received at age two provides him with some sense of sound, and he can speak and read lips. He’s also fluent in sign language. For Zach, proving that a hearing impaired person can perform a snow grooming job as well as anybody else is an ongoing challenge. “Almost every day that’s something I have to work through,” he says. “Sometimes people look at me as a person who can’t do this job, so I have to prove it to them every day, every night, to show them that I can do it.”

Zach is quick to say he doesn’t put his co-workers in that category. “I have to give a lot of credit to them,” he says. His crew at the Canyons was willing to show him the ropes, as well as accommodate Zach’s communication needs, like using text message technology. “That’s helped so much,” says Zach. After five seasons on the job, Zach knows he’s earned the trust of his grooming team, which he describes as very close. “We’re best friends,” he says. “It’s almost like a family.” John Neuhauser is the trails/slope grooming manager at Canyons Resort and Zach’s supervisor. He says Zach is considered “a fun guy to work with and a team player” by his co-workers, who share his passion for snow grooming. “Passion for this very specialized line of work is widespread on our crew and is contagious across the team,” he says. “Zach has been a like a sponge, absorbing this passion.”

Texting a Blessing Neuhauser maintains becoming a skilled slope groomer takes many seasons to achieve, and he says Zach’s skills have improved remarkably over the past few seasons. “Zach’s hearing impairment does not get in the way of him doing his job,” he says, adding that text message technology has been a blessing for the 29-yearold snowcat operator. “Communication on our grooming crew is accomplished primarily via two-way radio. When in a cat, Zach communicates with the rest of the crew primarily via text messaging,” says Neuhauser.

“Zach does have to rely more on his other senses to be cognizant of machine systems and potential problems that other operators would rely heavily on their sense of hearing to monitor.” According to Zach, his other senses have always been very highly attuned. “I’m very good with visuals and with my hands and with controls and everything like that.” Zach’s dad, Gary, agrees. “He’s always been extremely tactile,” he says. “He grew up flying radio-controlled airplanes (and) he’s always had a great feel. He was always able to manipulate controls and manage these machines in a way I certainly never could have.”

Family Tradition Zach grew up in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, which bills itself as ‘Ski Town, U.S.A.’ Gary says his son is now a third generation ski area employee – Zach’s grandfather was president of the Steamboat Skiing Resort Corporation many years ago. Zach’s mom was a ski patroller at the same resort and his dad was the director of lift maintenance there (Gary is now customer support manager at Doppelmayr USA). “He used to take the gondola right After school and ride up to my office, and then we would drive down the hill on the snowmobile,” Gary says. He clearly remembers a day during their time in Steamboat Springs when “one of the cat drivers came by and took Zach for a ride. Zach acknowledges he caught the bug at a young age. “I grew up skiing on the mountain my whole life and I always saw snowcats coming by,” he says. The thought of becoming a snowcat operator, Zach adds, is something that “always interested me because it’s something that I could do, even being deaf.” Zach, who operates PistenBully and Prinoth machines at the Canyons Resort, says his favourite time on the slopes is sunrise, when he can indulge in his favourite hobby – photography. Last year, one of Zach’s pictures won the best sunrise/sunset award in a snow groomers photo contest held annually at the resort. Five years in at the Canyons, and Zach still relishes going to work in the evenings. For that reason, he didn’t bat an eye when asked to work 12 shifts in row recently. “I love everything about it,” Zach says. “I’m very willing to work hard. I’ll work overtime. I’ll do anything to be in a snowcat.” ❃

Swedish snow groomer Anders Forsell says being part of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, was an experience he will never forget. By: Jim Timlick

Sochi provided some breathtaking views during the 2014 Winter Olympics but warm weather posed some snow grooming challenges for the slopestyle snowboarding events.

nders Forsell used to dream of one day representing his native Sweden in snowboarding at the Winter Olympics. That dream recently came true, albeit not quite the way he originally envisioned. Forsell served as the head builder and technical designer for slopestyle snowboarding at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. As such, he was responsible for overseeing the design, construction and maintenance of the slopestyle course used by snowboarders during the Games. Forsell literally grew up on the slopes near his home of Ostersund, Sweden, where he used to spend nearly every waking moment on his board. While he dreamed of Olympic glory, there came a point where he realized it was not going to happen for him, at least not as a competitor. “I realized I’m not going to be that good a rider and then I started to shape jumps and drive snowcats,” he says. “It started like a hobby in the beginning for me and my friends when we were riding but then I got better at shaping and building than riding. That’s when things changed and I switched over and started to shape and build instead.” Forsell was already pretty well known on the international snowboarding scene prior to the Sochi Games. Snowpark Consultants, the company he owns and operates, had already been doing design and grooming work on the World Cup circuit for several years when Sochi 2014 officials approached him about designing the first slopestyle course in Olympic history. It didn’t take him long to say yes.

“It was a big challenge for sure but I thought it would be a lot of fun as well,” Forsell recalls. “When I signed the contract I knew it was a big task. It was a lot of responsibility. But I saw all the opportunity and challenge. That’s how I always do things. If someone asks me (to do) something that I think might be a little too big or too hard then I say ‘OK, let’s go for it and try it.’”

that included several Russian shapers and builders. While he was given quite a bit of freedom when it came to the design of the course, Forsell says the Olympics presented some unique challenges. Because the organizing committees for the Olympic Games do not permit any advertising, no cars or other items with identifiable logos could be used on the slopestyle course. “That limited our possibilities to have these kinds of features. We came up with some things but then Sochi 2014 (officials)… said ‘No, you can’t have that,’” he says. Still, the weather was by far the biggest challenge Forsell and his crew faced in Sochi. They began building the course in early January, 2014, but then

had to deal with six straight days of rain which delayed the completion of the course and forced the cancellation of the only scheduled test event prior to the Games, meaning riders had to begin training on an untested course. The ground was so wet at one point Forsell and his crew had to use a winch to build the rail section and the top part of the course because snowcat operators were having a tough time trying to climb the hill through the soft, slushy snow. To make matters worse, because the ground in Sochi does not freeze, snow was melting from below as well as above. Days before the start of the Games, a sudden cold snap caused the snow to become like concrete and made shaping extremely difficult. “We went into training for the Olympics with a non-tested course. That was not ideal for sure,” Forsell says.

“I still remember that feeling when the first test rider dropped in (to the course). That was the most frightening moment in my career. I thought if this is not working then this is goodbye forever,” he adds, laughing. “That was pretty tough, for sure.” At one point Forsell was one of the most talked about people at the Sochi Games. Because of the poor weather conditions, he and his crew were forced to make some last-minute changes to the course that included raising the

knuckles of the landings by one metre and cutting down the top deck of the takeoffs by about half a metre.

Two Thumbs Up Despite a bumpy start that included a couple of injured riders and some grousing in the media, most of the slopestyle athletes gave the course two thumbs up. Canadian competitor Max Parrot told ESPN he “loved the course from top to bottom,” for example.

“ When I signed the contract I knew it was a big task. It was a lot of responsibility. But I saw all the opportunity and challenge.” “It’s like always. If you ask 10 riders, you get 10 different opinions,” Forsell says. “But the good thing is even the riders who were not on the podium or were not the top riders were all so happy about the course. It was not only the winners who were happy.” Forsell says while he frustrated by the weather and some of the other challenges he and his crew faced in Sochi, he was pleased with the results of their efforts.

“For everybody in this business the best part is always when you see the final course. That is the reward for you,” Forsell says. With one Olympics now under his belt, Forsell says he would certainly consider doing another Games if asked. In the meantime, he plans to devote most of his energy to Snowpark Consulting, the company he established 10 years ago. Snowpark was responsible for grooming and design work at recent World Cup events in Kreischberg, Austria and Yabuli, China, and has done work in more than 15 countries around the world. “My business is kind of my hobby. It’s a lot of work but it’s a lot of fun,” Forsell says. “I’m happy with where we are going right now. All this hard work (has) kind of paid off over the years. ❃

The Snomax Snow Inducer is one of the most popular snowmaking systems in the world.

ne of the most successful products in the history of snowmaking, Snomax is used by ski resort operators in almost every country that makes snow. Snomax has also served as the official snowmaking sponsor for four Winter Olympic Games since its inception in 1987, when Snomax Technologies was founded by Kodak. The company has traded hands a number of times since then, and since 2012 Snomax International has been owned by the large Italian snowmaking solutions firm TechnoAlpin. The product, which is known as the Snomax Snow Inducer, is made in the United States at a manufacturing facility in Colorado. Snomax is used on ski slopes as an additive to the water used in snowmaking systems and is derived from

proteins produced by Pseudomonas syringiae – a microbe found on the leaves of healthy plants all over the world. While it is a natural product that’s 100 per cent biodegradable, Snomax does not contain living microorganisms. The biological material used in Snomax is sterilized, which in turn prevents further growth. “It’s basically a purified protein that’s been freeze-dried,” says Wayne Palmiter, president and CEO of Snomax International. The makers of Snomax stress that it’s been used safely and effectively all over the world for decades without a single

negative incident. They cite more than 35 independent scientific studies in the United States and several other countries that have concluded that the product poses no threat to human health or the environment. Snomax works by acting as a nucleator, or essentially as a catalyst for ice crystal formation. It is mixed in water to form a concentrate that is metered into the snowmaking water supply, and all the water droplets thrown from the snow gun are then seeded with Snomax nucleators. The key to efficient snowmaking is to freeze as many droplets as possible before they hit the ground, and herein lies one of the secrets to Snomax’s success. Water treated with Snomax contains anywhere from 1,000 to more than 100,000 more nucleation sites than untreated source water, meaning every

droplet has a site for ice crystals to form. “That’s probably the biggest thing Snomax does for you,” says Palmiter. “It puts a nucleator in every single drop of water coming out of the snow gun.” Adding Snomax also allows the droplets in the mixture to freeze more quickly than regular water. That’s because Snomax functions as a high temperature nucleator, meaning it’s capable of initiating the freezing process at substantially higher temperatures – some studies have shown that Snomax is effective up to almost 27 F. Water added with Snomax not only freezes faster, but more completely and over a wider range of conditions. This enables ski resort operators to produce better snow when temperatures are not ideal for traditional snowmaking, which can help extend ski seasons in marginal snow areas. Conversely, this

benefit allows greater volumes of snow to be produced at low temperatures. “At cold temperatures is when we really see incredible volumes,” says Palmiter. “It’s not uncommon to see a 60 to 70 per cent increase in volume at cold temperatures.” Snow made with Snomax requires less water, regardless of the temperature, which means there’s less snowpack loss from evaporation, sublimation and drift. Having to move less water also reduces overall energy consumption. Lower water and energy requirements have a positive effect on operating costs as well as benefits for the environment. In essence, Snomax increases the productivity and efficiency of snowmaking systems and delivers a consistent snow quality, even during extreme temperature fluctuations.

According to Palmiter, the proteins in Snomax initiate a nucleation process that creates a smaller, more tightly packed crystal that has a stronger ionic molecular bond than conventional snow. This enhanced crystal formation happens closer to the nozzle of snow guns, allowing the subsequent snowmaking process to use almost all the available water, which in turn results in more snow being produced. Palmiter says this also produces bigger snow particles, which can enhance accuracy when directing snow onto ski slopes. “The particles typically are larger, because they’re forming closer to the nozzle and they’re dropping closer to the gun,” he explains. “They’re landing on the skiable surface (which is) where you want them.” While Snomax uses nucleating agents, which affect the freezing characteristics of water, some other snowmaking systems use surfactants – chemicals added to the water that changes the viscosity by reducing the surface tension of the water droplets. “Not all additives work by the same principal,” says Palmiter. “With Snomax, you shouldn’t see a change in the viscosity of the water, or in the snow you’re making. You should be able to make adjustments to the snow gun, so you can make the snow as dry or as wet as you want to for your ski area.” A benefit for users is that it’s possible to make snow with Snomax that doesn’t slide off park terrain features or down steeper grades like snow made with an artificially low surface tension. Some other advantages include better snow groom-ability and uniform consistency. Snow grooming operators report that Snomax creates high quality snow that doesn’t pack into ice, but grooms smoothly and can be moved around more quickly and easily, reducing energy consumption and associated fuel costs. This superior snow also appeals to skiers, who report that it’s lighter, more powdery, and has less ice that regular snow. Both skiers and snow grooming operators appreciate the experience provided by Snomax – a nice turning snow that’s not sticky and has consistent feel from top to the run to the bottom. ❃

ome good old Canadian know-how is helping make the task of building storage and repair shops for snow grooming equipment substantially easier and more economical for the North American ski industry. Calgary-based Sprung is an industry leader in tension fabric structures, and its patented stressed membrane technology has been used at dozens of ski

areas in North America and around the world. Jim Avery, vice president, sales and marketing for Sprung, says a big part of what makes his company’s products an attractive alternative is that they can be erected in a fraction of the time it takes to put up conventional brick and mortar structures. Crews can assemble up to 1,000 square feet of the aluminum subframe and individual fabric membrane system each day, according to Avery, meaning a 60- by 60-foot structure can be constructed in as little as four days. “At a ski area you have a very short construction window,” he says. “The beauty of our structure is that it goes up quickly.” The Sprung structures are also a much more cost-effective alternative to conventional buildings. Avery says they range in price between $20 and $40 a square foot, about a third or half of the price of other types of utility and storage facilities.

“You can’t really compare them (to other types of structures). If you’re going to build a permanent shop somewhere, that’s a whole different animal,” Avery says. Sprung offers leasing packages for all of its products, making it an attractive option for ski areas looking to build a permanent snow grooming maintenance and repair facility as part of their long-range plans but need something in the interim. Most leases typically run between one and three years, Avery says, but can be tailored to the needs of customers. Another benefit of the Sprung structures is that they don’t require a foundation and can be anchored directly into the ground. That means in addition to saving money, ski area operators can quickly and easily relocate the structure from one location to another as their needs change. “It’s very easy to (move them). You just disassemble it and then put it up again,” Avery says, adding that because

the structures are portable buyers arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t required to pay property taxes on them.

Versatility Key Feature Sprung structures also offer much more versatility than other more traditional buildings. An optional insulation package can be added that provides an energy efficiency rating of R-25 and R-30, meaning a storage structure can be easily converted into a full-service shop for maintaining and repairing snow grooming equipment. Avery says some ski operations have even used the technology to build everything from lodges and administrative offices to pubs and restaurants. The exterior shell can also be tailored to meet the needs of the customer. The company offers dozens of different colours and patterns for its cloth panels

To date, Sprung has built is excess of 12,000 tension fabric units in over 100 countries around the world, including more than 40 ski areas in North America alone. Although that technology is portable, it’s also extremely durable, according to Avery. A Sprung structure that is part of a military installation in Shemya, Alaska has withstood windloads of

120 mph., while another building at Kirkwood Mountain Resort in Lake Tahoe, California survived intact following a single week record snowfall of 9.7 feet in February 2011. “The thing about Sprung that is different than the other structures out there is we’re the most reliable structure on the market. We have a patent technology system that uses a better quality aluminum membrane (in the frame),” Avery says.

“They are designed for indefinite use. All you have to do is replace the membrane down the road. It’s not a problem at all for them (to last) 20 years. We’ve had some structures that have been up for more than 30 years.” Sprung is hardly a newcomer when it comes to building technology. The company was founded in 1887 by Phillip Dorland Sprung to meet the Alberta oil and gas industry’s need for a rapidly deployable structure that was portable and could handle a heavy snow load. While it continues to be family-owned and operated, the company’s vision has continued to evolve. “It was just basic warehousing (to start). It’s since grown to where it’s been incorporated into buildings in every industry as a viable building solution,” Avery says. ❃

atzer has been producing topquality ropes for close to 200 years, since its inception as a rope-making factory in the Swiss town of Romanshorn back in 1836. Back then, the factory produced hemp ropes used for agriculture, fishing and shipping. Steel wire rope production was added around 1900, and today, Fatzer specializes in the development, manufacture and global distribution of high-quality steel wire ropes for a wide variety of applications – including ski lift cables and winches for snow grooming vehicles.

Fatzer began making winch ropes in 1983, when it entered into an agreement with the German firm Kassbohrer to engineer a precision winch rope for a snow grooming vehicle being specifically designed for grooming steep ski slopes. A year later, Kassbohrer’s Pistenbully 200 DW was unveiled, featuring a winch with Fatzer-manufactured steel cable that supported and secured the vehicle as it climbed and descended sharp inclines. Flash forward some 30 years later, and Fatzer winch ropes are now recognized as the safest and most reliable high-quality cables used for difficult

grooming work on steep slopes – as well as their superb Swiss craftsmanship. “It starts with the selection of our raw material suppliers to meet our highest specifications and our demands. Product development and engineering are our highest priority and our production facilities and equipment are all state of the art,” says Robert Fehr, project manager sales for Fatzer. “But even more important are all the people at Fatzer who have a high degree of training, technical knowhow and education and are proud to produce the world’s best ropes.” Still headquartered in Romanshorn, Fatzer is a privately owned company within the Brugg Group. In 2012, the company moved into a brand new, custom-built production facility, utilizing cutting edge technology and equipment to manufacture highly specialized stranded ropes and spiral strand ropes. Winch ropes are among the most complex rope designs, and can contain more than 250 wires in nine different diametres.

Winch Rope Care A winch rope is one of the most complex types of rope designs, and can contain more than 250 wires in nine different diameters. Because the demands and forces are higher than in any other application, it makes it impossible to repair or splice such a rope. Operations and conditions are different at on every slope in every area, as are operators and types of snowcats being used, which means winch ropes wear out at different rates. Generally, however, it’s recommended that winch ropes be turned around After 300 to 400 working hours. Regular inspections of winch ropes are also recommended. If damage to the rope is detected early enough, measures can be taken to extend the life of the rope by shortening it. Winch ropes for capstan winches always need to be kept dust and oil free. That’s because a capstan winch works by friction between the rope and capstan head. Any type of contamination increases the possibility of malfunction and damages caused to the rope and winch itself.

For example, Fatzer winch ropes are distinguished not only by their dependability and long service life, but also by exceptionally high breaking forces – one of the main selling features of the company’s latest product, the PWtracPLUS capstan winch rope that was introduced last year. “Consistent evaluation of user experiences and intensive trials over the past three years have also led to improvements in the functional efficiency and reliability of our ropes,” says Fehr. “The PWtracPLUS is characterized by an increase of up to 20 per cent in fatigue

life and an optimized dynamic capacity to withstand stress. With its approximately 10 per cent higher breaking force, the PWtracPLUS offers a higher minimum breaking force for all snowcats. According to Fehr, the user benefits of the PWtracPLUS include: • Maximized minimum breaking load of 115 kilonewtons • Maximized capstan openings +/- 10,000 passes • Maximized service life up to 1,200 hours • High stability while cycling loading • Excellent wrapping properties • Low abrasion

“There is just nobody else in the market that has that experience and advanced technology for winch ropes for capstan winches that Fatzer has today,” Fehr says. The company has also developed a winch rope for use on the drum winches found on Prinoth snow grooming machines. The new rope, called the PWtracDRUM, goes into production soon and will be ready for customers by next season. ❃
