Newsome, Carl Our Father, we ore conscious of the fact that our port in this great struggle is small when compared with that sacrifice demanded of those who ore bearing the burdens and the fiery testing of bottle. Be close to those who hove gone forth in answer to the call to arms. As duty calls them out across the seven seas and into the countries that girdle the globe, grant them courage and fortitude sufficient for their task, 0 Lord . They ore fighting for their country and for Thee; they ore offering their lives in that lost full measure of devotion. Moy the victory, the peace, and the happiness for which they ore fighting, again come to our notion. We ask this in the nome of Thy Son whom they serve, and whom we serve. Amen .

We Dedicate

7k TO one whose br illiance has not crowded out a gentle and humble sp irit, whose greatness has not superseded a love for fun and life and people, whose ambition has not d isplaced the h ighest of Christian ideals, whose leaving we regret-yet we are proud to give h im to a g reater cause . . . MENDELL L. TAYLOR, Ph .D.

Is ••••• the master who draws the purest notes of music from his instrument . the bricklayer who builds individuals into the walls of our churches the compass which directs the course of many a wanderer . . . the miner who strains from the rush ing waters of human maze the tiny pieces of metal to be melted and formed in God's mold . . . the beacon light which guides precarious youth over the tempting, misleading coral reefs of formative years . . . the breeze which kindles the tiny flame into a holy blaze of success that will in turn yield similar sparks of influence . . . the gardener who tends the delicate embryos in the barren patch until it becomes a garden of lovely plants whose roots are embedded in the soil of God's will and whose petals reach forth toward the dawning day .. .

OSCAR J. FINCH, B.D., D.D.

Our president is the one who guides, shapes, and directs the affairs of

the college.

With

wisdom,

tact,

and

infinite

patience he helps to mold young life into integrated maturity. Great indeed is the responsibility which has been thrust upon his shoulders, but innate ability and a close walk with God enable him to fulfill that responsibility.

We respect him,

The voice of the students in the college governmentthat's the student council.

Under the efficient leadership of

Dr. Grothaus, this capable group this year sponsored the remodeling of the Drag, planned chapel programs and lyceum programs, and took care of all the thousand-and-one duties which go on behind the scene.

JACK RAI RDON Student Director of Religious Activities

The torch of Christianity moves through the dim twilight of the ages, leaving a trail of smoke that forms the ever-revealing intricacies of God's plan.

It has been held high by the army of fearless torch-bearers, and

its light has made their pathway beautiful and clear.

The rays of the

torch gleam on their banner and its motto, the Golden Rule; and the world bows in respect. The darkness of fear, the shadows of uncerta;nty, and the pale glimmer of worn-out hopes- all become . brightness and beauty when touched by the flame of that burning brand . Fanned by the breezes of time, its radiance ever increases -

until, when handed by

the faithful bearers to the returning Christ, it will be a great shaft of light reaching from earth to heaven, and to eternity.

"LET US MEET TO&ETHEI\ IN THE HOUSE OF &OD"

The Church- that's where we go to worship God in all the beauty of hoi iness. Dr. C. B. Strang, the pastor, gives words of counsel, advice, and encouragement to all who need them, and fearlessly proclaims the Word of God . It's a real opportunity to attend a church that possesses such genuine spiritual vitality.

Chapel -that's the pause in the day's busy routine when the entire student body and faculty come together for relaxation and inspiration. The contact lends harmony and understanding; the programs present a challenge.

"TffiS KIND GOETH NOT OIJT BUT BY PRA.YER AND FASTING"

Prayer and Fasting League- that's the band of students who kneel in prayer every Friday noon and meet God in intimate and beautiful relationship. He Iifts the burden and gives new strength , determination, peace, and joy. And as they leave, their faces are lighted by that inner glow that comes only from a talk with the Master . . .

.,WE ARE LABOURERS TOGETHEI\ WITH GOD"

Through actual participation in religious services, both on and off the campus, our ministerial students are learning to take their place in God's harvest field.

God said-"1 have made man in my own image; therefore he must know the pure, the true, and the beautiful." So He took a bit of the star melodies, snatches of the angels' songs, the murmurs of the wind 'round the corners of heaven, and the songs of the birds who fly through His sky, and blended them together to send to man as-Music . He gathered the roaring of the thunder and the ocean, the voice of the ages, together with the stillest of all whispers-that which speaks to the human heart without words-and sent them to us as-Speech. He plucked the tints of nature, the hues of the sunset and of the rainbow, the brightness of the noonday sun, and the shadows of the crisp clear moonlight, and sent them to man that he might enjoy-Art. And man worships God through the beauty of these manifestations of his handiwork-music, and speech, and art. And man calls them fine arts, because he knows they come from God.

The romantically beautiful story of the love of Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett brought to Iive again on the stage of our college--that was the junior play. Top-notch acting, authentic costumes, and a bang-up ticket sales contest all contributed to its success.

The members of the class in dramatics learn self-expression through acting . Sometimes their work is serious, sometimes amusing- but always it lends ease and poise.

:Jfte oflttfe S~ep~erJ o/ _}~ngdom Come Full of heart-throbs and tender sentiment was the story of Chad, the "Little Shepherd of l<ingdom Come" as presented by the senior class. Presented in a modern setting by a superb cost, the ploy will long be remembered.

.of'lceum Variety is added to college life in the form of a dramatic sketch from the life of Beethoven "Moonlight Sonata"; next a lecture by "Slim Williams" describing his thrilling adventures in Alaska . It was then we decided to save our pennies and buy a motorcycle. The last lyceum number was in March when the Ritz Trumpeteers visited us .

An unusual opportunity and beautiful muhic -. -that characterized the concert presented by the Oklahoma State Symphony Orchestra. The audience fell under the spell of the music, as the orchestra played and Victor Alessandro directed; and reluctantly left long after the lost lingering note of music hod died away.

In the picture above is Victor Alessandro, conductor of the Oklohomo state symphony orchestra, and below is Wayne Spalding, pianist, who appeared here on the Fanning memorial pipe organ benefit program.

GJucalion Education becomes a lifetime associate of one who learns to carry his book-satchel in an institution of learning and forgets not how to carry it with him from the school.

It is like the river with its influential tribu-

taries reaching forth, for education makes the man who makes the book. Like the effulgence of the sun that glances through the leaves to bring into contrast the shades of Iight and dark and to accentuate the color tones, the long Iine of the alphabet has marched its way through the denseness of every age to form prisms of enhanced visio路n and glints of enlightenment in every corner of creation. Education probed its way through the Dark Ages to expand in all the ramifications of present-day knowledge.

"The Reveille Echo" is, supposedly, the voice of the students. Occasionally it has been a rumble; more often it has been just an "echo." Our purpose has been to bring you the news, some fun, and a wee bit of inspiration-but most of all, to portray the student life as it is-Christian young people attending a Christian college whose ideals are of the highest. You have been patient with our "brain storms," and we have had a lot of fun. -The Staff

::Dorm ofl/e It brings back memories-of jam sessions with peanut-butter crackers spread thick with homespun philosophy; of borrowed toothpaste and perfumed hair oil, and missing alarm clocks and prized photographs; of the give and take of stacked rooms and stealthy hide-outs from the dorm mother in those tiny, one-exit clothes closets. We remember old associations and would Iike to say in the students' own vernacular, "Ain't we coot? Us is broommates, 'cause we sweep together-dust we too." And lest we forget, memories of evenings spent around that "neverwinding-down" piano in the parlor; of those times in the cosy snack kitchen foreseeing what the future held for us guys when the "right one" was doing our cooking.

This year finds many at Bethony-Peniel joining that innumerable caravan of working students. As, doily, they grind out their education, they catch the vibrant uplifting tones found even in monotonous and humdrum perseverance.

"The Little House" originated because of the growing pains of the college and will be remembered because of its spirit of cooperation , happiness, and spirituality. From the early morning prayer meetings, through the last few m inutes of studying, manicuring or pinning up hair by the hall light at 11 : 15, each day has been one of sheer happiness.

Smile pretty!

"Time out," for the parade of sports! Yes, our campus has a sports program too-varied, active, and successful. Whether we play or whether we sit on the sidelines and cheer, basketball, football, softball, and track are a vital part of our well-rounded college life at Bethany-Peniel. Sometimes we win; sometimes we lose; but always we have the joy of knowing we have "played the game square."

The same rules-true

sportsmanship, clean playing, and graceful winning or losing-are used in the "game of life," too. "There's the whistle, and here come the players . . . Rah, Rah! . ..

It seemed at the beginning of the season that the Sophomores would toke the tourney, but their luck was reversed the second semester . The Frosh succeeded in securing some new players that furnished the needed power to overtake and pass the Sophomores . The Frosh won the tournament by one game . Congratulations to a hard-working team!

The members of the Redskins are chosen by the Girls' "B" club for their sportsmanship, ability to play, and the number of games they participated in.

About the middle of September you land on the campus of BethanyPeniel College. After the nightmare of registration and initiation, you are a full-fledged member of the freshman class. You are bubbling with zest and enthusiasm, and your spirit permeates the whole campus. You sophomores are a little over-confident. Uust look how you treated those poor freshmen during initiation week.)

You have learned how to

get by with a minimum of study and a maximum of-recreation, would you say:> Juniors-Well, you have serious things on your minds. There is the junior play and the junior-senior banquet to plan . And you realize that soon you'll be seniors, so you start worrying about majors and m inors and upper-division credit. You make lots of high resolves, but somehow or other you don't accomplish too much . Seniors-senior play, comprehensives, senior trip, graduation .

You

feel very important deciding on the Commencement speaker and the announcements. You burn the midnight oil trying to make up for lost time . When Commencement finally arrives, you breathe sighs of relief. But you wipe the tears from your eyes as you say good-bye to Bethany-Peniel College .

Bethany-Peniel is growing .

New buildings, new departments, new

equipment-al l are just waiting to materialize as soon as the war is over. There will be a new dormitory here, a new Iibrary there, a new class room building on this corner of the campus, and a new student union building on that. And everywhere, there will be students-new students and old students, hundreds of students. There will be more build ings in which to teach history and philosophy and English . There will be more laboratories and equipment with which to make clear the principles of mathematics and science. There will be a larger faculty, and more courses. And there will be more young people receiving an education in a Christian college . But until that tomorrow becomes today, we must content ourselves with blue-prints and floor -plans-and dreams.

The ages' breezes bear the sound Of echoed voices ringing out, In myriad chants of ecstasy, The praise of faith that checks the dou bt. Long, long ago began this choir, When first one held Christ's banner h igh; Rehearsed by volunteers since then, This tale of love to us comes n igh . A tested shield engulfs this trust, Displaying martyred hero's gleam ; There, too, is marked a taint of red, And hovers near a visioned dream. For hopes and efforts spent Iike these, Have built a m illion causes true; Beh ind the veil of school life now Is well-aimed purpose carried through . The principles of those before, Ingrained in solid brick and stone, Reveal the seed that made the plant, Enshrine the prayerful smile or groan . Bright gems that fall from teaching lips, The ever-linking human chain, And off-shoots radiating light, Reflect intense desire and gain. This faith that manifested is, And knows our fathers' grasp, Shall always reign within our halls, If hand of each gives friendly clasp. Elizabeth Hale

"Mitzi, you stand over here so they con hove something to Iough ot"-ond the staff photographers hove bogged onother trophy .

Maybe it's a unique picture

(such as Prof.

Spalding and Mrs. Gertrude Taylor playing marbles together), or maybe it's the eighth re-take of a group whose unusual beauty has been hard to capture on film. The pictures in the 1945 Arrow speak for themselves of the results of the long hours, hard labor, and lost sleep of those most necessary cogs in the wheel of "annual" progress-the staff photographers, Bill Smith and Colvin Rainbolt.

THROUGH 5.000 Mll.ES OF PIPE I That's a ~,. . , ot pipe! And it's a tremendous task to see that you, the customer, get the gas you need, whenever you want it. It's a 24路hour-a路day job bringing gas from widely scattered fields, over rocky hills and across ri<ers . ; maintaining proper pressures all along the line .. . planning and constructing new liues, and replacing old ones. It's a job that requires the tireless efforts of hundreds of men and women all working to see that your home, army and navy ,路amps, factories and office buildings will get suf路 ficient fuel even on winter's coldest day. So you see, 5,000 miles of pipe is not just a number . . . instead, it represents a living, dramatic journey from distant wells to the burner tips in your home.

WE have watched Bethany-Peniel College grow from a small building on the prairie to the large institution it is today The "Arrow" has also developed from the first brochure to the beautiful, large-size book of this year. We are proud that we have been selected to make the engravings for its many editions during these years of expansion. Our wish and prophecy is that Bethany has a great future in the post-war era.
