The '48 ARROW brings you a glimpse of the year at Bethany 路 . . . a panorama of the happy hours of fellowship and fun, the quiet times of prayer and worship, and the opportunities for study and achievement. We have emphasized each side of college life ... "Character, Culture, and Christ." In years to come, when thoughts of the past are the sweetest of all, may memory light her fires and recall faces, haunts, and dreams.

\Ve are grateful to you, Dr. and Mrs Strang, because of your loyalty, devotion, and unselfish service to Bethany-Peniel College. You have urged us to put first things first, you have been very understanding, you have guided our footsteps, you have broadened our vision for Christian service, and you have given us a desire to take fearlessly our places in world society. In appreciation, to you, we humbly and respectfully dedicate this 1948 ARROW.

BOOK TWO

OUR PRESIDENT Upon the capable shoulders of our president, Dr. Roy T. Cantrell, is the tremendous task of leadership. He is performing this 路 task with outstanding executive ability, keen insight into educational problems, and unfaltering loyalty to the lofty standards of Christ. His sympathetic understanding and complete reliance on God have made him a sound ~dviser and leader, a gracious friend, and a humble and sincere Christian gentleman. Mrs. Cantrell also has been an asset to the college. She is a gracious, charming first lady of the campus with high ideals and strong convictions. She leads an inspirational life before us. Dr. Cantrell attended Pasadena College, graduated from Asbury, did graduate work at the University of Kentucky and Asbury Theological Seminary. He received his M. A. Degree from the University of New York, _his B. D. from the New York Biblical seminary, and his D. D . Degree from Northwest Nazarene College. 路 For three years Dr. Cantrell was Dean of Men at Eastern Nazarene College. He pastored twelve years in New York and was superintendent of the Ontario, Minnesota, and Kansas Districts before coming to Bethany-Peniel as President. We admire his intellect, selfless devotion a'h'd untiring efforts, his wisdom and fine understanding of human nature. "The steps of a good man are ordered 路 by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way." :

Sophomore Initiation Varties

tiation Day was a day of fun and laughter for most sophomores. e high spot of the initiation chapel was furnished by the sopho're class when Dr. Jack Armold cleaned his patient, Donald Jore, by smashing a cherry pie over his gleaming pan. Then :y shook hands as a symbol of unbroken friendship between : two classes.

at evening the sophomores entertained with the enaction of : "Martins and the Coys." The feud ended with the wedding Grace Martin and Henry Coy.

1e sophomores honored the frosh class Friday evening, Septemr 26, as the initiation drew to a conclusion with a reception lowing a program in the Fine Arts auditorium. If you heard ~ weepings and wailings of sorrow by the sophomores that evetg it was just because the little casket containing the hatchet s being borne down the aisle by the pallbearers.

All is forgiven! Jack mourns the "dead" -the hatchet

The pallbearers place the casket on the stage

"I Do's" are said by Grace Martin and Henry Coy

tEACH year WHO'S V/HO AMONG STUDENTS IN AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES recognizes students from approximately 600 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. In selecting students to be recommended, the campus nominating committees are asked to consider outstanding effort and accomplishment in academic work, extracurricular activities and service to the school. During the school year certificate awards are presented to all students selected. The purpose of the project has been to serve as an outstanding honor in which a deserving student after displaying merit in college and accomplishing his goals, will be given recognition without having to pay some fee, and to establish a reference volume of authoritative information on the great body of America's leading college students.

R ev i vals Rev. Lon Woodrum, nationally known poet-evangelist, was the fall evangelists of the college church. Rev. Woodrum has been active in evangelistic work for the past nineteen years and is considered one of the outstanding national speakers for the Youth for Christ rallies. His vivid imagination revealed many unthought of treasurers in the Bible.

REV. LON WOODRUM

Rev. Charles Strickland, pastor of Dallas First Church of the Nazarene, held the opening convention of the school year, September l 0-14. Thus inaugurating a. plan whereby each school year will be opened by a religious convention. The encouragement and inspiration were splendid boosts to students. Rev. Strickland is greatly interested in youth work and feels the needs of young people.

Dr. G . B. Williamson, General Superintendent of the Church of the Nazarene, conducted youth revival services in the college church from January 28 to February l. He also gave the dedicatory address for the educational unit. One of God, one who preaches from God's word, one who knows and teaches the doctrine of holiness only partly describes Dr. Williamson. Rev. Charles Hastings Smith held the spring revival at the college church. He is a native of Arkansas and is a humorist-poet of wide note. He has traveled extensively over the United States and has brought "never-to-be-forgotten" messages wherever he has gone. REV. CHARLES HASTINGS SMITH DR. G . B. WILLIAMSON

Joan of Lonaine by MAXWELL ANDERSON

Joal). of Lorraine presents highlights from the life of Joan Arc by using the device of a play within a play. The events fro Joan's life, the people whom she knew, and many of the speech even are taken directly from historical records.

Joan, daughter of Jacques d'Arc, was born in the village Domremy, in the province of Lorraine, France, in 1412. F four years, from the ages of 13 to 17, she heard Voices from Go revealing to her that she was to crown Charles the Dauphin, King of France, and that she would lead the King's army victory against the invading English army. In 1429,. she did ju that, then was captured by the Burgundians and sold to tl English for ransom . Finally she was tried and found guilty heresy. On May 30, 1431, Joan was burned at the stake in tl Old Market Square in Rouen.

Pall 8lass A novel Thanksgiving party was given to the members of the senior class the evening of November 14, at the Bethany Youth Center. The money which would have been used for refreshments was used to buy food to aid students at Hurlet Nazarene College at Glasgow, Scotland. The program was in the form of a dinner menu with a musical cocktail, nuts and salad, main course, desert and an after dinner speech by Prof. J. W. Moore, class sponsor.

Imagine the Seniors are learning to spell!

Why Jerry, we didn't know you were tempermental

Refreshments

The members of the junior class had an informal party at the Bethany Youth Center on November 24. Dulan Clegg was master of ceremonies for the occasion and conducted the evenings activities. The class also sent money for food to the students of Hurlet Nazarene college.

Initiation c:Day SEPTEMBER 25

"Clean up!" What a picture these words present to the Freshman of 1947. An entire army of shoe polish, brushes, wash cloths, toothbrushes, and onions parades across the mind of each resigned and long suffering Freshman. He also has a mental picture of the B.P.C. campus and surrounding territory as it appears to the somnolent eye during the wee hours of the morning. Included in this album of snapshots is the unforgettable picture of many, many, stockinged heads and bearded faces peering over the edges of the luncheon table. From this reserved seat on the floor, we hear the initiated one mutter, "Please pass the butter." We must not omit that picture in which the freshmen (and incidentally, some of the sophomores) were thoroughly, but definitely cleansed. Some frosh found out the hard waythat a truck is not the ideal place for a shower bath. It will be fun to remember this day when you are a senior, frosh! Exercises at 4:30 a.m.-ho hum .

"Please pass the butter."

It is the duty and aim of the three religious organizations on our campus to help in providing the spiritual and religious guidance necessary for the growth of each student in our college. Our success this year has been determined by the splendid cooperation we have received from our students and faculty. We appreciate every prayer said in our behalf, every word of encouragement and every act of service that we have received throughout the year. May God richly bless each of you.
