B UIL DING FOR T H E- F U T U R E Education on a college campus is more than the mere acquisition of knmdedge-more than lectures and books and class rooms and stolid facts. It is a period of growth and development; of building for a suc足 cessful, harmonious future; of preparation for the time when its generation must accept the leadership of its world . The 1 9 54 ARROW seeks to picture the phases of college life on Bethany-Peniel campus which strive to fulfill these aims of American education and bring them to fruition within each student. vVe have pictured in this volume the intellectual, spiritual, social, and physical developments which exert their influence to build and shape our students into responsible citizens of tomorrow. Recorded here are the contribu足 tions which B-P.C. has made during the 1 9 54 school year to the lives of its students.

T H E P R ESID ENT Dr. Roy H . Cantrell, President of our college, i s loved and appreciated by every member of the student body. He is an able leader, a true friend, an understanding counselor, and a devoted Christian. Dr. Cantrell came to our campus in 1947 from the superintendency of the Kansas District. Since that time his primary interest has been the upbuilcling of our college. He spends many hours each year touring the educational zone, promoting the interests of the school. An important asset in Dr. Cantrell's success is his wife. Much of the cultural aspect of our campus is clue to the guiding hand of Mrs. Cantrell, rightfully termed as "first lady of our campus." Capably serving as secretary to Dr. Cantrell is Miss Lois Merriam. She also acts as recorder for the Board of Tustees. Assisting in the President's office is Miss Patsy Pagan, who is responsible for the circulation of the school bulletin, TODAY AT B-P.C.

Known the campus over for his understanding attitudes and true Christian spirit, Mr. Crad足 dock very efficiently manages to merge the gap between expenditures and income. He has charge of all. the official business of the college, yet manages to participate actively as a citizen of Bethany and as Sunday School Superintend足 ent of the College Church. One of the secrets of Mr. Craddock's success is the able assistance given him by members of his staff. Miss Ruth Newberry, office secretary,

To interest high school students in our col足 lege and to give them an incentive to become a part of our student body, is the duty of Field Representative Curtis Smith. He is the mediator between the college and the consti足 tuencv. revealing the needs of our school to them. Rev. Smith, coming from Corpus Christi First Church, became a member of our admin足 istration in 1952. His success, since that time, is clue in part to his hard work and sincere love of young people. The average student sees little of Rev. Smith because of his busy schedule. Most of his time is spent touring the educational zone. However, his face is very familiar at district camp meet足

SENIORS

CLASS OF '54

Through the doors 路of Breese Hall have passed many students with varied personalities, but with one a1m-a better education. \'Vhen the class of '54 stood before the tower with the silver chimes ringing in their ears for the first time, their onl:- design was an education from a Christian college. Now, stepping from the halls to hear the Carillonic bells toll their last hour of collegiate activities, they go forth with high hopes for the future.

However, they will not forget the years spent on the campus of Bethany-Peniel college. Long hours of classes and studies-chapel-mail postings-cokes at the Drag-senior papers-these will all be remembered.

Activities of fond recollection sponsored by the class have been: an early morning breakfast at Camp Don Shelley, Freshman Banquet at Beverly's Hide-a-way, Sophomore Outing at Lake Murray, Junior \Vestern Party on the Canadian River, Junior-Senior Banquet at St. Luke's Methodist Church, Junior Outing at Camp Classen, Senior Southern Plantation Banquet, and the exciting Senior trip, where three clays were spent at Camp Classen.

Better prepared to accept the responsibilities placed on t)1eir shoulders by preceding generations, the Senior class of

'54, leaves the halls of B-P.C. tied together with bonds of close friendship.

The class returned this year with a . new sponsor, D r . L . C . Philo, directing the activities . T o begin the year with a bang, an Indian wienier roast was held along the banks of Canadian River. Then, with the coming of the Queen of Hearts banquet, we watched proudly as one of the young ladies of our class was crowned queen in the mystic forest of enchan t足 ment. As a further activity of the class, our unique lyceum program featured Symore Davis, man of varied personalities . Finally, as a climax to our most successful year, we honored the seniors with the Junior-Senior banquet at B everly's H ide足 a-way. It was a gala and festive occasion, as we were carried dreamily from "the lowly earth to the vaulted skies."

Now we are at the end of the third quarter of our role to be played at B-P . C . With only one quarter to go, we are looking forward to the final round of our college career with great expectancy of the future .

S O PH O M O RES - C LASS O F ' 5 6 Renewed in strength and vigor, the Sophomores returned last September to begin their second year on the campus of B-P . C . Familiar scenes and faces from the previous year erased all traces of timidity and "greenness " . Beginning the year with eagerness, the Sophomores plunged enth usiastically into Freshma n initiation, where they were now the victors, rather than the vanquished. B u t after sufficiently humbling the new recruits, the hatchet was buried in an impressive ceremony, and all pledged to work together for a successful year.

Class athletics were an important factor in the Sophomore progra m . Under the direction of sponso·r and coach

Jack

Rairdon, the boys' basketball team was able to win first place in both the REV E I LLE E C H O Tournament and the class competition s .

T h e Sophomores decided against t h e traditional banquet in favor of an outing at Price's Falls. A s t h e buses were boarded in the early morning a drizzling rain failed to dampen the high spirits of the group . After arriving a t the Falls, Mrs . Drewry quieted ravenous appetities with food of both quality and quantity. Activities during the day incl uded wading, h iking, and frolicing together. Finally, as the sun began to s et, the weary Sophomores turned h omeward to resume their places of responsibility . Closing the secon d volume of "College Activities of the class of ' 56", the Sophomores will return as to edit the third vol ume in this series .

FRES H M EN - C LASS O F '5 7 It was with mingled emotions of loneliness, fear, adventure, and expectancy, tha t we, the freshmen class of 1 9 54, came trooping to the B-P . C . campus in September.

After the tears of homesickness had died away, and the harrowing days of registration were over, with moans, groans, and much laughter, we were ushered into our initiation . Then came the settling down more sanely into our college routine of classes and studies .

Immediately, the members of our. class began to make a place for themselves in the various fields of athletics . Proudly, with triumphant shouts, we watched as the girl's basketball team was awarded first place in the REVEI LLE ECHO Tournament.

Along with studies, classrooms, and lectures, there came lighter moments as decked out in costumes for a gala and festive masquerade party in the new Student Union B uilding. Then as a fitting climax to our year, we banqueted

m

a

dreamy "Garden of Enchantment", the first class to hold its banquet in the new Student Union B uilding.

Under the able leadership of Professor Fred Floyd, the class has worked together developin g in each phase of our col足 lege motto : Character-Culture-Christ. With an anticipating sparkle in our eyes, we are looking forward to the three remainin g years to be spent on the campus of this educational institution .

MISSION BAND

Mission Band is an organization composed of the missionary-minded students on the campus. However, it is not necessary that one feel a call to foreign service in order to be a member of this organization. The weekly services are held on Thursday evening in the college church. The soul-enriching, heart-stirring, and inspirational services attract a large number of at足 tendants. The informative programs are on home mis足 sion work, as we11 as that in foreign lands. In addition to regular services, tours to surrounding churches are conducted in the interest of missions. Each year this organization works with the general missionary program of the Church of the Nazarene in a special project for missions. It was their privilege this year to help buy household equipment for Don and Adeline Owens, former students of B-P.C., who are going as missionaries to Korea.

JAMBOR E E The annual basketball season was opened by an intense, excitement filled Jamboree, as the Redskins and Squaws officially clashed with toe Alumni teams. In the boys' game the Alumni, l ed by Art Kastner, de feated the Redskins 62-59. This was sweet revenge for an alumni team which up to this year had not been able to defeat the college team. They played good, steady ball, and their rebounding was a big factor in the outcome of the game. At the end of the first quarter, the graduates had built up a lead of 1 6-1 2, but by half-time the Redskins had narrowed the distance to one point, and the score stood 3 1-30. The third quarter opened without the Alumni showing any effects of fatigue, and by the end of the period had built their margin to 47-42. In the fourth quarter the Redskins began to gain ground, and with 3 1!2 minutes left in the game, tied the score 50-50. Both teams began to fight desperately for the lead with the ball changing sides frequently. The closing moments of the game were filled with tension as the score continued nip-and-tuck. As the final buzzer sounded, the Redskins were trailing three points.

R EV E I L L E E C H O The annual REVEILLE ECHO Tournament brought to a fiitting climax a highly successful basketball season. The tournament was attended by the four classes, each battling mightily for the championship trophy .

The hard fighting sophomores of Coach Jack Rairdon de feated the freshmen to win their second consecutive tourna ment championship. In the consolation finals the seniors took third place when they edged by the juniors. True Christian sportsmanship was not sacrificed for mere victory on the part of any team as they battled for the cham pionship. Finally, the storm-tossed waves of the sea were calmed and the sophomore ship rode the waters of victory alone.

Yoesel scores for the seniors.

The freshman valiantly cheer their team onward.

In the final seconds of game, freshmen and sophomores struggle for championship trophy.
