SOWA Welcomes, Farewells, Thanks and Congratulates…
SOWA State Manager Address After four memorable years, I have made the difficult decision to step down from Special Olympics WA and to introduce a new State Manager to lead the organisation in to the next phase of growth, development and competition. I would like to take this opportunity to thank every athlete, coach and volunteer for your support and I applaud you for your dedication and passion that you bring to this wonderful team. Through the power of sport, SOWA has been able to create a community for our athletes and families to be part of, providing a platform for each individual to experience sport, develop skills and, in a lot of cases, go on to represent our state or country in competition. Special Olympics WA creates programs for one to strive for personal excellence and personal bests without judgment or biased. Continue to be proud, continue to push the limits and I look forward to seeing you all again soon. It is with great pleasure that I now hand the reigns over to Helen Webb who commences her role in March 2014.
Di Bruce Helen Webb After graduating from University with a BA honours degree in History and Sport, Helen has worked within Sports Administration for over 10yrs, both within local government, state and national sporting bodies. Helen’s main experience is in the area of volunteer management, which led to her role as National Volunteer Manager for British Gymnastics. This involved developing leadership programs for young volunteers, designing training courses, recruiting and managing volunteers at major sporting events. Since moving to Australia, Helen has worked for the WA Sports Federation and Gymnastics WA. Helen’s most recent role was Development Manager with Gymnastics NSW, where she had specific responsibility for Inclusion and Leadership Projects, Workplace Health and Safety and managing a team of five. Helen is a keen volunteer herself and is committed to providing sporting opportunities to all. M: 0410 866 532

Jasmin riding on the success of her award At the 2013 “SO Celebrates” event, Junior Athlete of the Year recipient, Jasmin Steiner was not present to receive her accolade. Since news of her award and title, Jasmin has been proudly showing off her certificate and trophy to family, friends, Equestrian riders and coaches. Well done Jasmin, you have every right to be proud!
Variety Scholarships Many thanks to the generosity of Variety the Children’s Charity who recently pledged support to some of our SOWA athletes in various capacities. Athletes such as Josh Elliott, Perth Metro North member who swims at Craigie Leisure Centre program under the guidance of coach Bob Tarr was a recipient of the charity. Josh also has a passion for music and his recent application for funding through Variety to support his music was granted. At the recent Variety presentation, all children pledged scholarships were acknowledged and presented with certificates. Variety is also assisting some of our National Game team members in their quest to compete at the Games. Thanks Variety for your ongoing support to SOWA. It is always much appreciated.
