Message From Chair of Special Olympics State Board: Roseanne Healy Welcome to an update from Special Olympics South Australia for the month of July. It is a great pleasure for me to share with you all, that in South Australia we now have 862 par cipants engaged in Special Olympics programs with, a record number of 204 athletes registered this year. As a further indicator of a bright future and our leadership in guid‐ ing athletes of all abili es along their sports journey; over 100 of our registered members are under the age of 21. Growth of this nature strengthens our role na onally while extending our leader‐ ship and impact for the benefit of the South Australian community. This trend is reflected in the Na onal trend which also with Special Olympics Australia touching the lives of some 6,000 members, heading close to the targeted 7000, for 2012. On behalf of the State Board, I welcome all our new members and their families and hope that your journey through Special Olympics brings you many new and wonderful experiences through sport. As I start my own journey as the Chair, I am confident that Special Olympics is on the cusp of something great. In terms of how we will get there.. there is a commi ed team working hard to ensure that the this State, offers its members and volunteers as many opportuni‐ es as possible to reach their per‐ sonal best while ensuring that Spe‐ cial Olympics also plays a valuable role in li ing the spirit of our com‐ munity. I look forward to mee ng you at an event in the near future. Roseanne

Special Olympics South Australia Sent three teams to the Victoria State Basketball games 28 – 29th July Pakenham Victoria At 6.30am on Friday 27th July 22 athletes and support staff climbed on board the bus and headed to Victoria. 11 hours later we arrived at our hotel and a er tea, team mee ngs were held and then it was off to bed to freshen up for a long day of compe ons star ng Saturday. Saturday and Sunday saw each team play up to 5 games each before the finals on Sunday a ernoon. Division One: Coached by Teresa Kinross. The team played well throughout the tournament facing some bigger stranger opposi on players from Victoria. They were ready for the finals and played a well contested game right to the dying minutes – second by 3 points but the team can hold their heads up high as they were successful in so many other ways. The final game was played in the spirit of any true grand final with everyone determined to win. The game was played with great sportsmanship and respect for each other’s abili es. Thank you for giving us a great game to watch. Division Two: Coached by Trevor Kinross A very new team and the first me playing together. They played well with a few games very close in the end. As they ba led the increas‐ ing injury list, they fought hard right up to the last game. Finishing in 5th place but earning the respect of the other teams with their sports‐ manship and determina on. Thank you for a great me and for ge ng to know you – we look forward to the next event.

Division Three: Coached by Igor Negrão A first me coach and first me for a number of players. They had fun and entertained many with their skills and approach to the game. The team was captained by Nathan Balkwill and lead in a ack by Toby Sutherland and Daniel Tsatsaronis. Toby was the top goal shooter in every game. The three leaders encouraged the team to keep going and instruc ng them on how to move the ball down the court throughout the games. They played in the Grand Final and stood up to an advancing opposi on – holding out in the end as the Gold medal winners. Well done everyone.

Regional Development

Regional Development Day

As you would have read in previous newsle ers late last year we held a Public Forum to present a proposal to develop the regions. This was brought about due to a number of reasons but in the main the programs needed rejuvena ng, bringing our boundaries in line with local Council to help with fundraising and also to try and generate inter regional compe ons and so more opportuni es for our athletes. Those who a ended took back the informa on to the current commi ees with a month to report back any concerns. These proposed changes were adopted and the planning started. Board member Grae‐ me Alder and Lisa Hester met with Warrant Officer Spinks to discuss a plan that would see South Aus‐ tralia with 6 regions by the end of 2012. To drive this ini a ve we sought applica ons for new Chairs and Sports Conduits for each region. These two people with the support of current commi ee members and the State Office will be set the task of finding new people to fill remaining commi ee places. We have been fortunate indeed to have had responses from some very talented and commi ed people who have taken on the challenge and will certainly help us achieve our goal. We met on Saturday 21st for a planning day. Facilitated by Graeme Alder the group started se ng their Business Plan. For the next 12 months. New Regions for the start of 2013 will be: Adelaide Hills /Fleurieu; Adelaide South; Adelaide North; Limestone Coast; Riverland and Spencer Gulf Through David Braun TAFE students have designed Regional tops and banners which will begin the process of iden fying each region. What does this mean for our members? Towards the end of 2012 when membership is up for renewal you will be receiving a le er about the changes and which region you will be in from January 2013. It will make no difference to your training but will mean that when we hold state games or invita onal events you will be represen ng your region. It will mean more sports programs, more compe ons, more members and most of all a proper structure for each region to be run independent of the State Office. Each new region will be planning a membership day so you can meet your new commi ee and get to see what they have in plan for 2013. This is all very exci ng and such a big step for South Australia to make but what a difference it will make to what we can offer and a place you can call your own. Do you want to be a part of these new commi ees and help shape your regions future contact the office for posi on details and they can be emailed to you or posted to you, 8234 8730
