Telethon acknowledges Special Olympics WA In 2012, the people of Western Australia raised $16,805,622 during the weekend of Telethon, which was distributed back into the W.A. community in 2013. Special Olympics Western Australia and the Community Sports-Link Program have been very fortunate to have been recognised as a worthy recipient of the funding, along with forty four other causes. Hon Richard Court AC and the Trustees of the Telethon Trust awarded benefactors with acknowledgement of the funding at a reception held in May at the Perth Convention Centre. The funding will support Special Olympics WA to introduce the Healthy Athlete Program into the current Community Sports-Link Program. The free medical screening clinics will ensure primary and high school students receive the opportunity to access testing in various disciplines and receive the deserving medical assistance if required. Special Olympics WA was represented by 2012 Junior Athlete of the Year and Athlete Leadership member Eloise Bolam, and mentor Tayla Toutounzis. Eloise proudly accepted the pledge from Mr Kerry Stokes AC and graciously posed for photos with Trustees and Channel 7 personalities. Thanks to Telethon for making a difference!

Special Olympics State of Origin Challenge SOWA Versus SOSA
The weekend also included a day of sightseeing at the Super Pit and the Mining Hall of Fame. Athletes panned for gold and climbed over the massive trucks and machinery from the Super Pit.
Sports With 5 competition sports on offer; Aquatics; Athletics; Basketball; Soccer and Softball, all athletes were active all weekend. There were personal bests recorded at the pool and on the track and field. Support from local clubs in unified matches, resulted in a continued strong bond between Kalgoorlie and Special Olympics WA. Clubs such as Kalgoorlie Swimming Club; Kalgoorlie Soccer Club; Boulder Softball Club provided officials and players. Thanks to all. The weekend was topped with an evening at the Kalgoorlie Bowling Club and over 50 participants on the greens, trying their hands at bowls. A great meal and atmosphere created by the Bowling Club. Thanks to you!
Thanks to SOSA who made the journey. See you next year!!
The Faces of the State of Origin Challenge Thanks Kalgoorlie!!!

Soccer Skills Day Victoria Park
SOWA held the second Community Sports-Link Program Soccer Skills Day at Victoria Park Leisure Centre. Students from Corpus Christi College and Cannington Community College participated in the mornings activities. The grassroots skill sessions were supported by Gordon Duus, Football West and Matt Woods and his students from the Sports Education Development Australia (SEDA) Perth Glory program. The SEDA students experienced the challenges of coordinating, planning and delivering the five drill rotations of the clinic. The day concluded with three friendly unified matches between the high school students and SEDA students. Thanks Gordon and Matt for your continued support.
Athlete Leadership Training Day The team of mentors and mentees met at St George’s College for the second training session this year. The ten athletes sat with the ten university students to set personal goals; prepare speeches and discuss ideas and concepts for the betterment of Special Olympics in Western Australia. Special guest Madonna Blythe, Captain of the Hockeyroos Australian women’s team, shared stories of leadership challenges and her experiences from competing at two Olympics. With great plans for the remainder of the year which includes a tour of the SAS Barracks and a weekend of team building activities, the ALPs program continues to grow and provide opportunities to our members to gain skills and increase confidence.
