SOWA Reports State Development Manager I would like to take this opportunity to introduce our new State Chair, Rev. Canon Richard Pengelley (Richard) and welcome him on board with Special Olympics Western Australia. Richard is a well-respected community member within the sporting and educational sectors. Richard’s passion for sport and for mentoring was a natural fit for him being selected in the role. I believe Richard will lead SOWA in to a new era of growth and development, but more importantly, in our quest to provide opportunities and choices for our members. If I may also take this opportunity to thank outgoing board members, Dr. Justin Walawski and David McMahon for their contributions to the organisation. Justin and David were monumental in providing leadership and embedding processes to ensure SOWA is an organisation that embraces diversity and recognises individual’s abilities within sport. Under Richard’s leadership, SOWA will be sending four teams away in 2012 to compete in; State of Origin Challenge – Adelaide Victorian Exhibition Games Softball – Melbourne Trans-Tasman Tournament – Cairns SOA Junior National Games – Newcastle I wish the first two teams travelling in May all the best in their competitions and to enjoy the experience. To all the volunteers that make the games possible, a HUGE thanks for your tireless dedication and commitment.

Players from the Joondalup program before the “Everybody’s Game” Carnival Day held in April at Basketball WA Stadium
State Sports Committee
Special Olympics Western Australia recently sent a couple of teams to the “Everybody’s Game” Tournament, organised and hosted by Basketball WA and supported by Inclusion WA. Our teams led by Head Coaches, Julie Williams and Tim Breadmore represented SOWA well in the competitions against rival teams and programs from Roads; Swan Friendship Group; and West Rise Basketball. The afternoon held at the Basketball WA Stadium provided an opportunity for our players to compete against teams of equal ability. Ten teams competed in 3 games each; with the carnival concluding with an All Stars match. West Coast Waves and Wanneroo Wolf pack player Nikita Martin attended the day and was represented in the All Stars match, as well as being the guest referee. Over 150 players and spectators attended the day and the exciting and fun filled afternoon was well received by everyone. The April carnival was the first of four for 2012. Our Special Olympic Basketball programs held at Joondalup and Mirrabooka will continue to train and work towards the ongoing Carnival days. With the introduction of a new basketball program for 6 – 8 year olds at Hamersley Recreation Centre commencing in May, young and upcoming players will develop skills and gain the confidence to participate in future “Everybody’s Game” Carnival Days.
