Anthony Soave Partners with Forgotten Harvest Soave Enterprises works with local food banks in Detroit to help provide food for those in need. Soave Enterprises follows Anthony Soave’s commitment to support the local community by giving back to those in need in Detroit, Michigan. The company provided thousands of pounds of rescued tomatoes to local food banks through the non-profit organization, Forgotten Harvest. Forgotten Harvest has worked for over ten years to relieve hunger in the Detroit area for the thousands of individuals living at or near the poverty line. The organization coordinates rescue efforts for perishable and prepared foods in the region and delivers it to local organizations who can then share the food with families and individuals in need. Great Northern Hydroponics Teams with Local Non-Profit Soave Enterprises’ affiliate company, Great Northern Hydroponics (GNH) operates a tomato greenhouse on a state-of-the-art fifty-acre facility in Canada. They initially began their partnership with the Detroit non-profit by shipping truckloads of produce donations to Forgotten Harvest, when Soave Enterprises’ Treasurer Rick Brockhaus recognized the opportunity. Brockhaus serves on the board for Forgotten Harvest and immediately saw how well GNH could support the organization’s mission. Within the first six months, GNH had already donated thousands of pounds of produce to Forgotten Harvest who then distributed them to local food banks and meal programs throughout the Detroit metropolitan area. “Soave Enterprises and its employees feel this is another great way to give back to our community,” says Brockhaus. “Forgotten Harvest truly embraces its mission of feeding those in need in metro Detroit, and the combined efforts of our two organizations make everyone a winner.” The Produce Donation Process Great Northern Hydroponics donates tomatoes that have minor surface imperfections, and although they are deemed unsuitable for commercial sale, they are otherwise healthy produce. Prior to the partnership, GNH would recycle the tomatoes into their organic fertilizer, but thanks to Forgotten Harvest, the tomatoes can be used for their original intent – being eaten and enjoyed. The tomato donations now directly help feed over 500,000 people in Detroit’s tricounty area who live at or below the poverty level and often go without healthy necessities such as fresh produce. The Forgotten Harvest trucks now make regular stops at the Soave facility – twice a week at the peak of the summer growing season, and then once a week during the fall. Darrin Didychuk, President of GNH notes, “We look forward to continuing our partnership with Forgotten Harvest.” Forgotten Harvest currently rescues 8.6 million pounds of food per year.
