WELCOME FROM

THE OPENING NIGHT COMMITTEE CHAIRS It is our great pleasure to welcome you to Opening Night at the Hollywood Bowl. Tonight’s concert kicks off the LA Phil’s 95th season at Southern California’s most iconic venue, and we are delighted to share this momentous occasion with an audience of generous supporters of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. This year we celebrate with Grammy-winning Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Steely Dan! The concert will feature their trend-setting jazz/rock blend, accompanied by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra under Principal Conductor Thomas Wilkins. We’ll also get an inside look at one of the LA Phil’s most compelling educational initiatives, the Composer Fellowship Program (CFP). This evening is also an opportunity to honor our loyal patrons, whose generosity enables us to serve more than 150,000 children and their families annually through such programs as Symphonies for Schools, CFP, and, of course, Gustavo Dudamel’s signature initiative, Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA). We thank you for your tremendous support and dedication to the LA Phil and the Hollywood Bowl. We hope you enjoy this special evening, as we embark on another summer of unforgettable nights under the stars at the Hollywood Bowl! WELCOME TO

OPENING NIGHT AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL

An annual tradition, Opening Night marks the official beginning of summer for generations of music lovers across Los Angeles. Tonight, we are fortunate to be joined by the incomparable Steely Dan as we get the season underway. Led by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, Steely Dan has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide and helped define contemporary American music with their genre-defying hits “Reelin’ in the Years,” “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number,” and “Deacon Blues” among others. The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, under the direction of Principal Conductor Thomas Wilkins, will share the stage – making this the first time Steely Dan has ever performed live with an orchestra! Proceeds from Opening Night will benefit the LA Phil’s Education and Community initiatives, serving more than 150,000 children and their families each year. Included among these initiatives is the Composer Fellowship Program (CFP), an innovative two-year immersion program for high school-age composers. CFP provides young artists with unrivaled access to the world’s leading composers and musicians, and gives them the tools necessary to pursue a career in music. To kick off the program’s 10th anniversary year, the orchestra will perform works by two of our alumni Fellows tonight. Thank you for supporting our Composer Fellows and the LA Phil as we usher in our 95th season at the Hollywood Bowl. We hope to see you many times throughout what promises to be another extraordinary summer under the stars. Enjoy the concert. 10TH ANNIVERSARY

THE COMPOSER FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM New music – its creation and performance – is at the very heart of the LA Phil’s identity. Founded in 2007 by the late Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Steven Stucky, the Composer Fellowship Program (CFP) is a reflection of that. A unique offering among American orchestras, this innovative, multi-year program gives passionate high school-age composers the tools, experience, and freedom to pursue a career in music at the highest level and make a substantial contribution to the future of new music. The LA Phil is providing the region’s most talented young composers with a bridge from their earliest musical aspirations to their eventual triumphs in the professional music world. Through mentorship, exposure, connection, and first-hand experience, Composer Fellows are guided in the creative process from start to finish with the help of acclaimed composers. Over the last ten years, students have had the opportunity to work with founding director Steven Stucky, as well as current CFP director Andrew Norman, CFP director 2009-2015 James Matheson, and teaching assistants Sarah Gibson and A.J. McCaffrey. Each year, Fellows also have the remarkable opportunity to hear their works performed live in concert by the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Over the course of their journey in CFP, students participate in small group composition lessons, seminars presented by LA Phil musicians, and encounters with some of the most esteemed professionals in the field, including John Adams, John Corigliano, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Kaija Saariaho, Magnus Lindberg, and many others. In addition, Fellows are given unrivalled access to the LA Phil’s resources, including over 20 LA Phil concerts each year, invitations to rehearsals, and world-premiere performances of new works by internationally renowned artists. The program’s alumni have amassed an enviable list of achievements and gained acceptance to some of the country’s finest institutions, including Harvard, Yale, the Juilliard School, the University of Southern

California, Oberlin College, New England Conservatory, University of California-Los Angeles, the Manhattan School of Music, Bard College, and many others. Over the past decade, CFP has also expanded to include the Associate Composer Program (ACP), which is comprised of ten to twelve talented, enthusiastic young composers, and encourages their love for music through a year-long composition track and the opportunity to work directly with their Composer Fellowship peers in the great tradition of mentorship.

Another natural outgrowth of CFP, the National Composers Intensive (NCI) is offered to ten selected American college composition students, giving them the opportunity to gather in Los Angeles for an immersive multi-day workshop and have their works performed by a contemporary music ensemble. The inaugural NCI coincided with the LA Phil’s Next on Grand festival in 2015, while the second iteration will be a part of the From Noon to Midnight event taking over Walt Disney Concert Hall on October 1, 2016.

“Composing music is solitary work. Just you and your pencil (or nowadays your laptop) alone in a little room with nothing for company but your own private blend of hope and terror. For these young musicians it [CFP] is a dream come true; they still pinch themselves when they arrive at the Hall for their classes and lessons every two weeks, or when they are backstage meeting with Esa-Pekka Salonen, Gustavo Dudamel, or John Adams. I have longed to see us mentoring, supporting, and performing young composers. Our new Composer Fellowship Program has given me enormous hope for the future of my profession.” — Steven Stucky in a 2009 KUSC article

“There is no program in the world like the LA Phil’s Composer Fellowship Program. We strive to give these kids, none of whom is older than a junior in high school, one of the deepest and most constructive educational opportunities in composition available in the world.” — James Matheson, CFP Director 2009-2015 “I think these kids are going to shape the future of our medium, and there’s nothing more exciting than that.” — Andrew Norman, CFP Director “It’s great to have three other comrades whom you can go to for help. Before the program I had no intention of becoming a full-fledged composer. I had no idea

of whether I could sustain a living. Now, I feel I have a shot.” — Saad Haddad, Class of 2007-2009, quoted in the Los Angeles Times “Overnight I went from being a high school kid trying to find some sort of mentor, to being in a room with four other people my age, one of the best composers and teachers around, and world-class musicians playing my music – which was mind-blowing.” — Anderson Alden, Class of 2007-2009 “There’s no other program on the planet that will give you this attention that you need to become the best composer that you can.” — Luca Mendoza, Class of 2015-2017

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

STEELY DAN TIMELINE FOLLOW THE HISTORY OF THIS LEGENDARY GROUP 1967-1968: Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, erstwhile students at Bard College, discover common interests in jazz, blues, popular music, and contemporary literature, particularly so-called Black Humor. They begin collaborating on songs, which they perform in various pickup bands. 1969: Fagen and Becker attempt to peddle their songs door-to-door in the famous Brill Building, home to many if not most of the schlock music publishers of the day. They are eventually signed to a publishing deal by a small company owned by ’60s group Jay and the Americans, who are enjoying a brief revival of their popularity due to their hit remake of the Drifters’ “This Magic Moment.” 1970: Fagen and Becker join the Jay and the Americans’ touring band. 1971: On the recommendation of staff producer Gary Katz, the partners are signed as staff songwriters by Jay Lasker, president of ABC/Dunhill Records in Los Angeles. They move to Los Angeles, where they are given a small office-with-piano in which to grind out the hits. A desk drawer in the office still contains the brown bag lunches of the previous song-writing team to use the office. The team interprets this touching detail as a symbol of the impermanence of success in the pop music scene. They proceed to write a series of classic but unrecordable cheesy pop songs, while secretly planning to assemble their own band and record their own album. 1972: After rehearsing after hours in the unfinished new wing of ABC Records office, the intrepid little band hits the studio and records their first album. The album, entitled Can’t Buy a Thrill, is released under the name Steely Dan, which had been unceremoniously lifted from William Burroughs’ novel Naked Lunch. The charter members are: Denny Dias (guitar), Jeff “Skunk” Baxter (guitar), Jim Hodder (drums), and David Palmer (vocals).

1973: The band in various configurations tours the U.S. and Britain. Two more albums are released: Countdown to Ecstasy and Pretzel Logic. Donald is now singing all the lead vocals and Walter has begun playing guitar leads. The final touring configuration includes Mike McDonald (vocals and piano), Jeff Porcaro (drums), and Royce Jones (percussion and vocals). 1975: Becker and Fagen disband the original group and begin to record entirely with various session players. The results include a series of acclaimed albums: Katy Lied, The Royal Scam, Aja, and Gaucho. 1980: Becker and Fagen go their separate ways. Fagen records his first solo album, The Nightfly, which is a huge critical and commercial success. Becker moves to Hawaii and becomes a gentleman avocado rancher and self-styled critic of the contemporary scene. The 1980s: Fagen pens tunes for artists including Diana Ross, Manhattan Transfer, Jennifer Warnes, and Yellowjackets. He co-produces the soundtrack album for Bob Telson’s musical The Gospel At Colonus, and composes the score for the film Bright Lights, Big City. He also writes a column for Premiere Magazine. Becker produces albums for China Crisis, Rickie Lee Jones, and various jazz artists, including Bob Sheppard, John Beasley, Jeff Beale, Andy Laverne, Marty Krystall, The Lost Tribe, Dave Kikoski, and LeeAnn Ledgerwood.

1991-1992: Fagen and producer Libby Titus (“The Mistress of Rock’n’Soul”) develop the New York Rock and Soul Revue, which culminates in the recording NYR&S Live at the Beacon Theatre. Sessions begin for Fagen’s second solo album, Kamakiriad, with Becker producing. Becker also joins the revue for their Summer ’92 Tour. 1993: As Kamakiriad sales climb towards platinum and beyond, Fagen and Becker hit the road with The All New Steely Dan Orchestra ’93. Becker begins work on his first solo CD, 11 Tracks of Whack, with Fagen producing. A boxed set entitled Citizen Steely Dan is due out for Christmas. 1994: In May the group tours Japan. Becker’s solo 11 Tracks of Whack is released following the successful summer tour by the Citizen Steely Dan Orchestra ’94. 1995: Alive in America, an album of live performances from 1993-1994 is released. Fagen and Becker begin writing for a new album. 1996: The Official Steely Dan Website goes online in March. The Art Crimes Orchestra tours the U.S., Europe, and Japan. 1997-1999: Work on Steely Dan’s first studio album in 20 years proceeds apace through 1999. 2000: Two Against Nature is released on February 29 and debuts at No. 6 on Billboard’s Top 200. Donald and Walter receive ASCAP’s Founder’s Award in May. Summer sees the Steely Dan 2K World Tour of Japan, North America, and Europe.

FOOD + WINE

NESEW ASON THIS

+

We are thrilled to launch our new culinary program, brought to life by James Beard Award-winning chef Suzanne Goin and business partner Caroline Styne, of celebrated local restaurants Lucques, a.o.c., Tavern, and The Larder.

STREET FOOD & SNACKS

KITCHEN 22

Locations throughout the Bowl grounds feature the diverse multi-cultural foods of Los Angeles: street tacos, burgers, specialty hot dogs, bánh mì, pizza, rotisserie chicken, BBQ, and popcorn.

Burgers, fries, sandwiches, salads, and Spanish Fried Chicken.

THE WINE BAR BY A.O.C. THE BACKYARD

MARKETPLACES Specialty sandwiches, salads, cheese + charcuterie plates, snacks, beer, and wine.

SUPPER IN YOUR BOX SEAT Order ahead for full-service meals from Suzanne’s summer supper menus served in your box seats.

LUCQUES AT THE CIRCLE

THE SWEET SHOP

Fine dining for subscribers of the Pool Circle, with a seasonal madeto-order menu and exceptional wine list, styled from the awardwinning restaurant Lucques.

Candies, cookies, brownies, and rotating artisan baked goods.

Inspired by the gorgeous hills surrounding the Bowl, this newly designed al fresco space has the feel of your coolest friend’s chic backyard. Two large wood-burning grills are the focus of this farmers’ market-driven, family-style restaurant serving shared plates of grilled fish, chops, steaks, grains, greens, and an extensive raw bar.

L.A.’s favorite wine bar comes to life at the Bowl, featuring artisanal cheese and charcuterie, market-fresh salads, grilled fish, and meats. The wine list, curated by Caroline Styne, features only wines that are farmed sustainably, organically, or biodynamically, and are made by small-production, artisanal winemakers. A selection of craft brew and farmers’ market-driven cocktails made with soju and other wine-based liquors complete the offerings.
