EXPLORE THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL’S NEW PODCAST, BOOK, AND VINYL COLLECTION

As part of Hollywood Bowl 100, the LA Phil has developed several ways to celebrate the centennial, including a new tenepisode podcast series.

Each episode covers a moment in time ranging from 1922 to today and explores the unseen history of a specifi c location at the Hollywood Bowl’s 88-acre campus: from Highland Avenue to the back benches. Written and hosted by writer Derek Traub, the podcast shares never-before-told and long-since-forgotten stories drawn from dozens of oral history interviews and thousands of documents from the Bowl’s archive and historical collections across Southern California.

Each brief episode (running between seven and ten minutes) can be accessed free of charge via podcast platforms or online at hollywoodbowl.com/first100years. Historical photos from the LA Phil’s archive that illustrate each episode can also be found online. To enjoy the series as a self-guided audio walking tour, listen to it in person when you are at the Bowl!

Also just released is Hollywood Bowl 100: The First 100 Years of Music. This limited-edition 7-LP box set showcases 55 recordings made at the venue by artists ranging from The Doors, Death Cab for Cutie, James Brown, Ella Fitzgerald, Herbie Hancock, Billie Holiday, and Natalia Lafourcade to the Los Angeles Philharmonic, performing under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel, John Williams, Zubin Mehta, and even Igor Stravinsky. Each selection pays tribute to the Bowl’s broad musical history and countless unforgettable concert nights. Listening samples are available now at hollywoodbowl.com/vinyl.

If you want to dig even deeper into the making and remaking of the Bowl, the newly published Hollywood Bowl: The First 100 Years book features ten chapters that move fl uidly through time. Written by Derek Traub and edited by Julia Ward and Robin Rauzi, this imagefi lled, cof ee-table-style history draws on fi rst-hand accounts to answer a deceptively simple question: What makes the Hollywood Bowl, the Hollywood Bowl?
