AROUND CENTER THEATRE GROUP August Wilson Monologue Competition National Finalists Take Broadway Congratulations to Aryana Williams and Alexander Villaseñor on terrific performances at Broadway’s August Wilson Theatre in the August Wilson Monologue Competition National Finals on May 1, 2017. Their performances marked the end of a long and fulfilling journey into Wilson’s work; both Williams and Villaseñor had participated in the Competition as underclassmen and advanced to both the Regional and National Finals for the first time as high school seniors. They spent a weekend in New York City seeing Groundhog Day and Sweat, touring Jazz at Lincoln Center, meeting some of August Wilson’s collaborators, and taking in the sights before making their Broadway debuts.

Jersey Boys cast members Mark Ballas, Cory Jeacoma, Matthew Dailey, and Keith Hines—who play Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons in the production currently onstage at the Ahmanson through June 24, 2017—gave Downtown Los Angeles a sneak peek of what was in store in late April. They got into character for a photo shoot around The Music Center and Walt Disney Concert Hall. They treated a lunchtime crowd at Grand Park to some of the group’s biggest hits at a special free concert, Broadway at Grand Park (which also featured performances by the Into The Woods cast). And they performed for iHeartRadio and at The BoardRoom, the new speakeasy at Kendall’s Brasserie.

Center Theatre Group Joins Forces with Top Playwrights and Theatres Some of the greatest and most innovative playwrights in American theatre have written major new works commissioned by Center Theatre Group, from Luis Valdez’s Zoot Suit and Anna Deavere Smith’s Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 to Rajiv Joseph’s Archduke. As we celebrate our 50 Anniversary, we are committing ourselves to doing more to support the creation and production of groundbreaking art. We are partnering with four internationally renowned theatres to bring the new work of a diverse, talented group of artists— including Pulitzer Prize-winning playwrights Lynn Nottage and Paula Vogel—to our stages over the next decade. These partnerships will also connect us formally with Chicago’s Goodman Theatre, London’s Royal Court Theatre and National Theatre, and New York’s Second Stage Theater, which now owns the Helen Hayes Theater on Broadway. A $1 million grant from the Edgerton Foundation is making these new theatre partnerships possible. The Edgerton Foundation Playwrights Initiative will support Center Theatre Group in commissioning at least two shows annually with each of the four theatres over the next decade. “In recognition of Center Theatre Group’s long-standing mission to develop new art for the American stage, we are excited to offer commissioning funds for more than 50 new plays in the Edgerton Foundation Playwrights Initiative,” said Edgerton Foundation President Brad Edgerton, MD. “By jointly developing each of these new plays with two talented theatre staffs, we hope to increase the number of productions that will journey

to many regional theatres, Broadway, and the West End.” In addition to Nottage and Vogel—both of whom recently made their Broadway debuts with Sweat and Indecent, respectively—co-commissioned playwrights include Jon Robin Baitz (Vicuña, Other Desert Cities), Lisa Kron (Fun Home), and Young Jean Lee, whose Straight White Men will bow on Broadway next year.

“The Edgerton Foundation Playwrights Initiative is allowing us to make bigger, bolder investments in some of the world’s best playwrights,” said Center Theatre Group Artistic Director Michael Ritchie. “Co-commissioning with top theatres in the U.S. and London allows us to put our resources together in support of the creation and production of new work around the world—with a clear path to Broadway thanks to our new connection to Second Stage and their Helen Hayes Theater.” Ritchie is bullish on what this means for the future of Center Theatre Group, Los Angeles theatre, and our art form. “These partnerships are setting an artistic foundation for the next 50 years of our company,” he said. “We’re creating a new model for global collaboration that ensures that artists get the creative and financial support they need to do their best work, and that nonprofit theatres get the resources they need to build and sustain relationships with top artists. GOSSIP, CHEESE, AND THEATRE IN BOYLE HEIGHTS

Across the street from Mariachi Plaza in Boyle Heights, tucked tightly onto a corner, is a very small bar. And although it’s early on a Sunday evening, inside the very small bar is a very big party. The young, diverse crowd is dancing to 1980s pop, drinking sangria, and gossiping in English and Spanish. It is quintessentially Los Angeles. This is the setting of Chisme y Queso, an event series hosted by Center Theatre Group in partnership with Boyle Heights bar Eastside Luv. On six Sundays this spring, patrons and artists gathered to share anonymously their own chisme—gossip— and have it performed onstage (atop the bar) by local actors. Alongside the improvised chisme, the actors performed skits by up-and-coming writers from around Los Angeles. Chisme y Queso—which is one part of a two-year community initiative in Boyle Heights funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation—allows Center Theatre Group to experiment with our programming, invest in the future of young Los Angeles actors, writers, and directors, and connect our neighbors with us and with theatre in a nontraditional setting. “We are so used to our spaces being our three theatres, but community programs allow us to create new spaces in Boyle

Heights, like The Shop, our costume and props shop, the libraries, where we present monthly play readings, and now Eastside Luv,” said Center Theatre Group Community Partnerships Director Jesus Reyes. Chisme y Queso is a natural extension of the community programs and partnerships we’ve been building in Boyle Heights over the past four years. Plus, added Reyes, “This program

also expands our reach in terms of the kinds of artists we work with and where those artists are in their careers.”

Center Theatre Group Community Partnerships Associate Alejandra Cisneros, who is directing all of the Chisme y Queso pieces, is one of those artists. “I think a lot of young directors, because there’s a lack of space within L.A., need to bring life and work to other spaces,” she said. “Doing more site-specific work, marrying the arts with community engagement, and finding your tribe is one of the only ways that as a young artist you can move forward in your career.” The participating writers, who are being mentored by Center Theatre Group Resident Artist Naomi Iizuka, agreed that Chisme y Queso is moving both their careers and craft forward. “It forces me to think on my feet and write as truthfully as possible, because the audience really responds when they see a piece onstage that could come out of their own experiences,” said writer Diana Burbano.

This is exactly why the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation is supporting the program. “Our Building Demand for the Arts grants fund the placement of artists at the center of institutional efforts to build meaningful, longlasting relationships with

Building Theatre’s Professional Pipeline Center Theatre Group Joins Forces with Local Organizations and Schools on College and Career Fairs

Southern California’s high schools, colleges, and universities abound with aspiring artists, artisans, and arts administrators. And Southern California is full of people who have forged successful arts careers. But connecting them to one another, and creating paths for young people in the field, is a challenge not just for students but also for the organizations and schools that serve them, as well as the employers who want to hire them.

“We’re looking to disrupt stereotypes with professionals who don’t look like whatever students may have thought their profession would look like. The experience we want every student to have is, ‘I think I can do that, I can see myself doing that.’”

For the past two years, Center Theatre Group has teamed up with these groups to create two college and career fairs that are becoming an integral part of our professional pipeline for the next generation of theatre makers. On April 8, 2017, we joined forces with LA STAGE Alliance, the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, and the USC School of Dramatic Arts to present the Center Theatre Group Going Pro Career Fair at the East Los Angeles College (ELAC) Performing & Fine Arts Complex. The event is designed to help undergraduate and graduate students get ready to transition to a professional theatre career. And on April 22, 2017, we invited 30 colleges, universities, and organizations to our College & Career Fair for the Arts at The Music Center Annex, which helps high school students figure out how to pursue the arts after graduation. Center Theatre Group Next Generation Initiatives Director Camille Schenkkan has been overwhelmed by enthusiasm from all fronts. “There’s nothing like this in Southern California that I’ve heard of that’s designed expressly for students interested in theatre,” she said. “The fairs were originally meant to serve students, but now they’re serving everyone. On the high school side, colleges are really eager to be there because it’s such a specific audience of students interested in the arts. And on the Going Pro side, so many of the theatre professionals we’ve invited, who are volunteering their time, have said, ‘I wish this existed when I was in school.’” Even UCLA and USC set aside their storied rivalry to participate together. “USC is thrilled to be partnering with Center Theatre Group and UCLA on the Going Pro Career Fair for the second year,” said

It’s a terrific way to build community around young people with a passion for the performing arts.” Added UCLA TFT Department of Theater Chair Brian Kite, “UCLA was proud to be part of the first two years of the Going Pro Career Fair, and to be working with Center Theatre Group, USC, and LA STAGE Alliance to create a not-to-be-missed event filled with great information and artistic community.” The organizations participating in the College & Career Fair for the Arts offered nearly every conceivable option for students trying decide where to go and what to pursue after high school, representing general education, technical training, and community colleges, as well as private and public colleges and universities.

We also hosted free workshops on applying and paying for college, “ask me anything” sessions with professional theatre artists, and individual college counseling and personal statement help sessions. “There’s just so much uncertainty when you’re a teenager and you’re trying to figure out what to focus on,” said Schenkkan. “There’s so much fear around the question of, how do I do this? And in the arts, there’s not a clear career pathway like in other fields. We’ve also discovered that there’s inequity in what students are learning about college and career access. Some schools may teach students a lot about scholarships, but at others they may learn about what a BFA in acting is, but not find out how to pay for it. Everybody is getting little bits of college and career information, but nobody’s getting the full picture.”

The Going Pro Career Fair also strives to give students a full picture of the lay of the Los Angeles theatre landscape, with tables hosted by many different unions, panel discussions on career paths in theatre, individual speed networking sessions with professionals, and an informal networking mixer. “There was a lot of synchronicity in the planning of this,” said Schenkkan, “with colleges thinking deeply about how to help their students transition to the professional theatre workforce. It’s much easier to teach craft than it is to teach students how to get a job in this field—and they know that.” There was also a lot of excitement from unions who are looking to bolster their ranks. IATSE Local 33, the stage technicians union, signed attendees up for work. "It wasn’t theoretical—it was, ‘Can you work next Saturday?’” said Schenkkan. In addition, Backstage magazine offered everyone who attended free subscriptions. “Everyone’s really eager to help,” said Schenkkan. The fairs are a natural extension of Center Theatre Group's programs to build leadership skills and create career paths for young people in Los Angeles in the arts, which include our high school Student Ambassadors and our graduate and undergraduate interns. “We’re figuring out how to help students in each step along their journey from when they first go see theatre and fall in love with it to becoming the next artistic director or technical director or master electrician or actor,” said Schenkkan. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are at the forefront of these efforts. “We want every panel to reflect the diversity of the students who are watching it, who look like Los Angeles,” said Schenkkan. “We’re looking to disrupt stereotypes with professionals who don’t look like whatever students may have thought their profession would look like. The experience we want every student to have is, ‘I think I can do that, I can see myself doing that.’” PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE 15

Introducing our new Associate Artists: Matthew Bourne, Danai Gurira, and Anna D. Shapiro Three artists working at the top of their game—choreographer/director Sir Matthew Bourne, playwright Danai Gurira, and director Anna D. Shapiro—are becoming an integral part of the Center Theatre Group artistic family for the next five years. We have supported and produced their work on all three of our stages in the past; now, we are formalizing and expanding our relationships by bringing them on as Associate Artists. In this new capacity, they’ll be sharing their talents with our theatres and helping us identify and collaborate with other artists of promise from around the globe.

“Center Theatre Group has felt very much like my company, New Adventures’, home-away-from-home in North America since our first visit with Swan Lake almost exactly 20 years ago,” said Sir Matthew Bourne—whose Red Shoes comes to the Ahmanson

Theatre in September, and whose work has appeared regularly at the Ahmanson since 1997. “I look forward to building on our special relationship, developing ideas, and further contributing to the extraordinary work Center Theatre Group delivers for artists, audiences, and communities.” Danai Gurira, whose plays Eclipsed, In the Continuum, and The Convert all played the Kirk Douglas Theatre, also pointed to a feeling of being at home here.

Anna D. Shapiro, Artistic Director of Chicago’s renowned Steppenwolf Theatre Company, who directed August: Osage County at the Ahmanson and A Parallelogram at the Mark Taper Forum, touted both the personal and the institutional connections she’ll be making here. “This expanded

relationship creates a great opportunity to build a bridge between Chicago and Los Angeles, where many of our ensemble members live and work, allowing for more cross-collaboration between two like-minded theatres and exciting opportunities for Steppenwolf to make connections with new artists, which can only enhance the important work we’re doing at home,” she said.

Commuters in Union Station became actors onstage, a hallway in the Millennium Biltmore Hotel was transformed into a ballroom, and Center Theatre Group audiences reinvented themselves as intrepid urban adventurers as part of Remote L.A., a pedestrianbased live art experience from March 12 – April 2, 2017. Wearing headphones and guided by a computergenerated voice named Heather, groups of 50 people swarmed out from The Music Center into the subways, alleys, and hidden wonders of Downtown Los Angeles. Remote L.A. was conceived of and directed by awardwinning international documentary theatre team Rimini Protokoll and produced by Center Theatre Group as part of our 50 Anniversary Season. “This is a chance to give Los Angeles a deeper look; not just blink and quickly drive by in your car,” explained Associate Artistic Director Diane Rodriguez. “It’s a moment to observe in a way that you never let yourself.” TH

WHO’S WHO MARK BALLAS (Frankie Valli) has captivated audiences on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars for 18 seasons. He’s a two-time champion, nine-time finalist, and 2011 Emmy nominee for his work on the show. Stage credits: Buddy—The Buddy Holly Story, Copacabana, Jesus Christ Superstar, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. He choreographed Pepsi’s Super Bowl commercial starring Sofía Vergara and the Oscar commercial for Shonda Rhimes’ The Catch. He is half of the duo Alexander Jean with wife BC Jean. In 2014, The Old Globe presented the World premiere of his new musical, Dog and Pony (music and lyrics by Michael Patrick Walker). Rick is currently writing a musical for Disney Theatricals with Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, based on the film Make Believe, and Superfly (co-written with Seth Zvi Rosenfeld), directed and choreographed by modern dance legend Bill T. Jones. Heartfelt thanks to those whose work in the theatre makes him grateful for the day he was born: Sondheim, Stoppard, Bennett, Prince, Fosse, Robbins, Nichols, Tune, Nunn, Laurents, Stone, Kushner, Taymor, Papp, Schumacher, Schneider, Coyne, Brickman, Timbers, and Rees. Rick thinks about them a lot. He never thought about Jersey much. He does now. BOB GAUDIO (Composer) wrote his first hit, “Who Wears Short Shorts,” at 15, for the Royal Teens, and then went on to become a founding member of The Four Seasons and the band’s principal songwriter. He also produced the hit “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” for Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand (Grammy nomination, Record of the Year) as well as six albums for Diamond, including The Jazz Singer. Other producing credits include albums for Frank Sinatra, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, and the soundtrack for the film of Little Shop of Horrors. Several songs co-written with Bob Crewe have been cover hits for such artists as the Tremeloes (“Silence Is Golden”), the Walker Brothers (“The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore”), and Lauryn Hill (“Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”). With his wife, Judy Parker, Gaudio produced and co-wrote the Who Loves You album for The Four Seasons and one of Billboard’s longest-charted singles (54 weeks), “Oh, What a Night.” A high point in his career came in 1990 when, as a member of the original Four Seasons, Gaudio was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1995, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, which hailed him as “a quintessential music-maker.” To this day, Bob Gaudio and Frankie Valli still maintain their partnership…on a handshake. BOB CREWE (Lyricist). “New York was pregnant in the fifties,” says Bob Crewe, “gestating with possibilities.” Crewe and music partner Frank Slay became independent writerproducers when the category hadn’t yet been invented. In 1957 they wrote and produced “Silhouettes” for The Rays, which skyrocketed to #1. Suddenly, producers in demand, they launched Freddy Cannon’s “Tallahassee Lassie” and Billy & Lillie’s “La Dee Da.” Crewe’s 1960s unprecedented producing success with The Four Seasons birthed a new sound, striking a major chord in American pop. “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Candy Girl,” “Ronnie”—all smashes! When lead Frankie Valli demanded a solo turn, Crewe and Bob

Gaudio wrote (and Crewe produced) “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” which eventually became the century’s fifth most-played song. Crewe ran hot with artists from Vicki Carr, Oliver and Lesley Gore to Mitch Ryder, co-writing with Charles Fox the soundtrack for Jane Fonda’s film Barbarella. Then his own Bob Crewe Generation exploded with Music to Watch Girls By. In 1972 Bob was in L.A., where he revived Frankie Valli with “My Eyes Adored You” by Crewe and Kenny Nolan. KEVIN AND TAMARA KINSELLA (Producers). Kevin Kinsella has been investing in early-stage technology companies for 30 years, primarily through his firm Avalon Ventures. Avalon companies have been responsible for bringing to market several multi-billion dollar life-saving drugs, the iPhone touchscreen, and the fastest-growing revenue company in the history of the Internet (Zynga). Mr. Kinsella is a Life Sustaining Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a member of Johns Hopkins SAIS Dean’s Advisory Council, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Both outdoor enthusiasts, Kevin and Tamara met in Alaska during the Exxon Valdez oil spill cleanup. The Kinsellas’ vineyard in Healdsburg, California, released the first Kinsella Estate Dry Creek Valley cabernet in 2011. Jersey Boys is their first Broadway show. Mr. Kinsella’s father, Walter A. Kinsella, was a career actor on Broadway, radio, television, and cinema. He first appeared on Broadway in 1924 in What Price Glory? JEFFREY UPAH (General Manager, Ahmanson Theatre) has worked in management at Center Theatre Group since 2006 on more than 50 musicals, plays, and special events including both pre-Broadway productions and Broadway tours. Some of his favorites include Follies, God of Carnage, and The Black Rider (having previously worked on Robert Wilson productions in Boston, Houston, and Sao Paulo, Brazil). Prior to Center Theatre Group, he worked in various capacities at the Santa Fe Opera, Yale Repertory Theater, American Repertory Theater, and Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, among others. GORDON DAVIDSON (Founding Artistic Director) led the Taper throughout its first 38 seasons, guiding over 300 productions to its stage and winning countless awards for himself and the theatre—including the Tony Award for theatrical excellence, Margo Jones Award, The Governor’s Award for the Arts, and a Guggenheim fellowship. The Kentucky Cycle and Angels in America (Part One) won the Pulitzer in consecutive years and, in 1994, three of the four plays nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play were from the Taper (Angels in America won). In 1989, Gordon took over the Ahmanson and, in 2004, he produced the inaugural season in the Kirk Douglas Theatre.

STEPHEN D. ROUNTREE (Managing Director) joined Center Theatre Group in 2014 as Managing Director. He was previously the President and CEO of The Music Center (2002– 2014) and concurrently the CEO of the Los Angeles Opera (2008–2012). He served the J. Paul Getty Trust for 22 years, starting in 1980 as Deputy Director of the Getty Museum, then Director of the Getty Center Building Program, and in 1998, the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the Getty Trust. He currently serves as a trustee of Occidental College, The Ahmanson Foundation, Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, and Polytechnic School.
